spent many days and nights around that kitchen table talking about how to make this a reality. Rosemary had suggested they write a proposal and present it to Cardinal Maida, the acting Archbishop of Detroit, at the time. Tom Putters, Annemarie’s nephew, remembers, “Her vision was stunningly clear. Her determination was very strong and we knew there was no question she would make Angels’ Place a reality. One of the big first steps was to seek the blessing of Cardinal Maida. I was delighted when she asked me to typeset the proposal to present to him. I never imagined the organization would grow so big and help so many people.”

Nearly 30 years ago, two moms, who were also nurses, sat across from each other in the Beaumont Hospital cafeteria and ventured into a conversation that would change not only their lives but the lives of many. Annemarie Lopez and Loretta Nagle were those two nurses. It all started when…
The inspiration was Charlotte Lopez, daughter of Annemarie and Ray Lopez, and the thousands of individuals like the Lopez family. Charlotte, lovingly called “Angel,” was born with theirsafetyconcernwereAnnemarieasdisabilitiesdevelopmentalsevereandagingparents,andRaywroughtwithabouttheandwelfareofdaughterwhen they were no longer able to care for her.
Place celebrates 30 years of service to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities this year. We have so many people to thank who made this possible including YOU. Please join us in remembering these 30 years as we tell the stories of the people and places that made this possible.

They shared the vision with 3 more women; Rosemary Kelly, Margaret Maxwell, and Peggy Prentice. They were to meet at Loretta’s home to figure out how they could make this vision a reality.

They knew they needed legal help so they called on their friend Rosemary Ledwidge. Rosemary suggested that her husband Pat, who was a partner at Dickinson Wright, might help.

About two minutes later, the book was on its way to my home via Amazon.
When the book arrived, I flipped through the pages. I was so intrigued, I decided to buy a second copy — one for myself and one for Walt.

My brother Walt recently returned from a trip to the Holy Land. I was sharing his joy of the experience with a friend and the friend suggested that my brother might also enjoy the book “Jesus” by James J. Martin SJ. The book is based on Fr. Martin’s own travel experiences in this area.

And I thought of the people who gave birth to Angels’ Place.
By their own admission, our founders knew nothing about creating a nonprofit and little about running a group of homes. And yet, they were presented with a challenge, committed to address it, and here we are.

Last year, over two thousand people contributed in some way to the care and comfort of our residents – parents and family members, board members and volunteers, donors, and employees.

Up until that time much of the work was done at a kitchen table of the founders and friends of the organization. A board was formed in 1993 with Jim Hurlbert as the chair. Members included Margie Birchler (Adams), Patricia Hurlbert, Rosemary Kelly, Michael Laurencelle, Rosemary Ledwidge, Annemarie Lopez, Margaret Maxwell, Loretta Nagle, Terry Nagle, and Margaret Prentice. “Annemarie was motivated not only by her love for Charlotte, but for her love of people she never met — other families in the same situation,” shared Tom Putters, a nephew of Annemarie. “She worked hard and was determined to fill a void after the State of Michigan reduced and eliminated programs for families with children like Charlotte, her angel. And be sure, Angels’ Place was never only about Charlotte — Annemarie hoped to help other families even more than her own.” Tom continues, “On every holiday and birthday, we were sure to find cards in our mailbox or gifts left quietly on our doorstep. After the first several years of living near Annemarie, we grew to believe she was a living saint. I once mentioned that my business was slowing and she promised to pray for me. It was only week or two later and I suddenly had more work than I could handle. She inspired us to work hard, be adventurous, put family first, and selflessly help anyone in need.”

In November of 1993, a story in the Michigan Catholic prompted a call from a woman in West Bloomfield, who had a house for sale. It was ideal with room for 5 adults and quarters for a home manager. In 1994, the doors of the Saddlewood (now Maxwell) Home
It is an honor for me and my family to be part of Angels’ Place, to do our part in honor of my Aunt Annemarie and cousin Charlotte in supporting the mission started 30 years ago.
Pat listened to what the ladies dreamed of doing and had lots of questions and precautions but he could see their determination and agreed to help start their application to form this into a legal nonprofit.
Loaves and Fishes
Annemarie believed the people served by Angels’ Place were an extension of her family and she worked tirelessly and humbly. No doubt, she is still reaching down to lend inspiration and wisdom to all. Angels’ Place will be forever grateful for Annemarie’s dedication.
“I think my aunt would want us to remember to lead with kindness and serve in any way we can. We all have certain skills, talents, and abilities that can be utilized in support of others. I have been blessed to grow up in a family environment that values service, kindness and compassion for others which continues to be my compass guiding me through life. And it gives me great joy to see this reflected in my own children as well.
The organization was incorporated on September 25, 1992. Sadly, Pat passed away, but Dickinson Wright continues to help Angels’ Place as Deborah Grace serves as our legal counsel pro bono.
In her eulogy her younger brother Max shared, “ she was a special and remarkable person who gave so much to others. As an infant, she contracted scarlet fever, and at age ten, she underwent serious ear operations, believed to be complications from the scarlet fever, yet she already knew she wanted to be a nurse, and went on to earn nursing degrees in medical health, nursing education, and public health.”

opened where Mark, Frank, Greg, Vern, and Robert called home. The first manager of the home was Sr. JoAnn Ciampa and 30 years later Sister still works at Angels’ Place as the director of the enrichment program.

Many of our residents are very affectionate and want to hug to show their appreciation and love for one another. We need to coach them on when it is appropriate to show affection. Especially right now, we coach them to stay safe and healthy from germs. Others are very sensitive to touch… even a gentle, well-intended touch of an elbow could be disturbing. It’s important to be sensitive to the individuals’ preferences and respect what they prefer.
There are currently 6 million people in the U.S. with a developmental disability. We hope to shine a light and share our voices for those who have a disability. Help us commemorate this awareness month by sharing someone’s story with a developmental disability.
Pre-Covid, Therese, a resident of our Haddington Home, loved to share her story on what it meant to be living with a developmental disability and how important it is to educate and spread awareness. She spoke to fourth grade classrooms to raise awareness of developmental disabilities. The students soon found there are few differences between them and those who have a disability. Answering questions about what makes a good friend and what hobbies you have, students are often surprised that Therese gives the same answers they do. It’s then the students realize that individuals with developmental disabilities share similar qualities of those around them.
PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES; WE HAVE A LOT IN COMMON.
This is rewarding work, but hard work — it’s easy to imagine the fun times — enjoying a meal, going for a walk, playing a game… but their work includes preparing those meals, keeping the house clean, laundry, and personal hygiene care.
• Get to really know someone with a developmental disability. Acknowledge their presence and treat them how you would want to be treated. Ask about their day.
The people who choose the caregiver profession are kind, generous souls. Most consider this their sacred mission in life. Many have been caring for someone — their own child, a parent, a grandparent — nearly their entire life.
The training is difficult and the documentation and paperwork seems to never end. What they accomplish is amazing.Weareso thankful for the people who choose to care for the Angels’ Place residents.
• Consider a career as a caregiver or volunteer your time as an Oblate at one of our homes.
• Organize an Easter parade past some homes, drop off an Easter basket, eggs or a sign at one of our homes.

Parents of children with developmental disabilities want the same things for their children that all of us do — nothing more and nothing less. And yet, they know few things come easy. They need to continuously advocate on behalf of their child. It’s so important when others advocate with them. The system of care — Medicaid, Community Mental Health, Social Security — is complicated and time consuming. It’s exhausting for theInguardians.additionto dealing with the challenge of caring for their loved one, every day parents think about “what will happen to my child when I’m gone.” Angels’ Place is one answer to that question, but unfortunately, we can’t be the answer for everyone.
