Often times in the fashion industry, it is easy to become short-sighted and forget that fashion is not limited to that small community. Fashion is the art of expression, which is an integral part of our shared virtual world and the Second Life community as an aggregate; thus, our goal at ECLIPSE Magazine is to not only offer an aesthetically pleasing publication with a heavy fashion influence and rich in content but be accessible to all of SL.. because EVERYONE wants to look good.

This part of the magazine is my least favorite. Invariably, it is also the last thing I do before I publish, so often times I am stuck in front of the screen where words simply escape me. However, I do take solace in that I am certain very few people probably actually read the “Letter from the Publisher;” thus, my ramblings are ultimately inconsequential. As of late, I have found myself directionless and less inclined to log on Second Life. Perhaps, the release of Pokemon Go in the US almost two weeks ago is a contributing factor... Or maybe, I’m in desperate need of meaning. Not in the capacity that is quickly assauaged by a sense of belonging or reinforcement of self-worth; rather, it is the distinct belief that life was meant to be more than a simple to do list. Life is not meant to be tip toed around. It is meant to be filled with passion and beauty, and I suppose tempered with responsibility and obligation. At any rate, this edition of ECLIPSE Magazine, we played around with the layout. We stayed true to our preferred minimalism, but sometimes something different is a welcome change. Huge thank you to Taylor Wassep for his awesomeness! I do hope you enjoy the content found in this issue. I am quite fond of the cover story. Be sure to visit before Indie Teepee closes on the 24th. Happy Readings!

of ECLIPSE last year, was Coachella/ Glastonbury-inspired, and featured DJs, book clubs, vendors, and events like roller derby. This year’s Indie Teepee has grown considerably, featuring a creative forum, over sixty vendors, a quiz bowl, lots of live music entertainment, and a collaboration with performance giants Guerilla Burlesque--slated to perform several times during the course of the event.
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 41
This year’s event is themed after “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the popular whimsical play by one of the most notable names in literature for hundreds of years, William Shakespeare. Scarlet says of the event, “It’s as though we have stumbled upon this beautiful, magical, lush yet abandoned land, and for a fleeting moment, we get to call it our home.” Scarlet also shared this poem with ECLIPSE, which she believes describes the event perfectly: There is a place where time gets lost; A place where dreams live and life is paused. An ethereal garden with English flair; The smell of magic fills the air. Down the hills crystal waters flow; Watchful trees like sentinel grow. To rhythm and music we shall dance; The imitations of life we watch entranced. Fireflies flitter beneath the heavens; A mirror where stars glitter and the moon beckons. Come, let your fantasies take flight; For here, our home shall be, these Midsummer Nights.

Ama worked with Indie Teepee last year as a blogger, but enjoyed the event so much that she decided to join the four-person team working behind the scenes to make this year’s Indie Teepee an even bigger success than its predecessor. “This event is everything,” Amarylisoona told ECLIPSE. “Last year, I was definitely impressed. Like Scarlet, I’m a huge fan of music, and always on the prowl for more of it, so I knew that I would love to be a part of this.” Ama went on to describe the event as “a truly welcoming and all-inclusive environment” that has “something for everyone.” This year’s Indie Teepee is bigger, longer, and more exciting! Indie Teepee team member Molly said, “This year, we’re all grown up. We have more of an understanding of the kinds of things that people want to see, and we developed that.” Fellow team member Anderian Sugarplum said, “We all brought something to the table to add more to the event.” If you weren’t able to check out Indie Teepee last year, make sure you stop by this year. The team behind the scenes is small, but all four of them echoed the same sentiment. “If you like art and music, this is definitely something that you should be involved in!”

The featured designers are the creative forces behind [evoLove], BLACK HAUS, Bleich, CURELESS [+], LUAS, LUXE, Petite Mort, Reverie, Sn@atch, Violetility and Wicca’s Wardrobe.

“Cupid is a knavish lad thus to make poor females mad. So said Shakespeare and if only he knew! Look! Carley Benazzi comes wearing a stunning emerald mini dress perfect for any occasion. Aptly named the Midsummer Dress by [evoLove], Carley accents it with an earthy brown clutch called the Lou Lou Pouchette. I think Shakespeare may have had it wrong. It seems Carley in [evoLove] makes men mad.

Flashing colors reminding one of the desert, Ivyana Szondi boldly wears crimson and gold hues accented by BLACK HAUS Scorpion Bracelets. Note the apt placement of the Scorpion’s head extended ever so slightly from the arm as if to warn off unwanted suitors. More deadly is the tale, curling off the hand. It’s body is a lustrous black with stone eyes that watch every move.

Locuala Madruga struts head to toe camel compliments for a sand coat dress with a collar boasting peasant plumes. Look closely at the shoes...soft camel stained leather kitten heels by Bleich make a bold statement. The elegantly detailed patterning in the leather draws your eye as does the slight heel. Note how the lines flow each direction causing you to gaze heel to toe and back again. The Mesh Viola kitten heels by Bleich are a fashion statement in and of themselves.

Doctor, doctor! Give me the news...do I have a rare case of HaemoglobinE? Miele Tarantal sure does! Check out CURELESS+ Haemoglobine skin--all over the many limbs, bare lips and eyes on Miele. Though...she does have a drop of blood on those pale lips and she seems to be crying tears of blood if you look at her bare eyes. I wonder if she needs help seeing that she wears CURELESS+ Luxurious Dolls Crystallized Doll Head and Jewels? The crystal lashes might magically be glasses. Gently falling beneath Haemoglobine toned breasts is a beautiful adornment: a silver Pandora’s Key. Perhaps it will unlock the secret to CURELESS+’s creativity!

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself. Ruby Ornamental is happy to lose herself in this fashionable gacha set from LUAS. Sometimes I feel like gachas are like playing Pokemon Go, you gotta catch ‘em all, or in this case play for them all. The stunning Summer Vibes Gacha features a full outfit ensemble with the skirt showcasing a contrasting color design and embellishments, and the halter top features the ever trendy exposed midriff and shoulder. Giving the outfit some edge, finesse your styling with the rare jewelry set of harness, bangles and headpiece!

The most important thing about anything worn is the woman wearing it, and Carley Benazzi is a vision of beauty wearing this beautiful accessory from LUXE. Make no mistake, there are not many women like Carley, and she will have many a man uttering, “I swear to thee by Cupid’s strongest bow...” Showcasing this stunning Triple Knot Choker in Gold, she highlights how the perfect accessory truly does make the outfit. Like a fairy nymph flitting through your dreams, you can only hope that when you wake tomorrow truly will she meet thee.
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 61
Ivyana Szondi, the always fabulous and fashionable Miss SL 2016, showcases Petite Mort! “By the simplicity of Venus’ doves. By that which knitteth souls and prospers love...” Wearing the Helena Chiffon dress, a stunning sleeveless summer ensemble, lightly patterned with floral print that accentuates her hips, Ivyana is certainly ready for an adventure through the forest. Paired perfectly with Petite Mort’s Hendrix boots, this is a must have for any and all wardrobes!

There is a saying that you should grab life by the horns, and Locuala Madruga in Sn@tch definitely took this saying literally. Someone looks like her car broke down in the middle of an empty forest and found herself at the whims and wishes of curious and incorrigible fairies. Dress in a super yet stylish casual outfit, it appears the fairies have given her an extra addition on her head, in the form of the Sn@tch Rhiannon Horns.

Puck the elusive, clever and wise little sprite, appears to have visited Miele Tarantal this fortnight. Why she doth bestride this world like a colossus... Wrong play! Miele takes the runway showcasing the Puck Heels in White and the Robin Circlet in Seelie by Violetility. This blindfold accentuated with horns and a silver gem in the center, paired with these donkey hooves, Miele is a picture of a modern day and stylishly fabulous Nick Bottom.

Every fashion show needs a token male, and in this case a token fairy in the form of Mr. Sil(vester) Avro. Taking a slightly modern day inspiration from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, we have a slightly confused fairy on the stage... badass flowers and leather. Showcasing the brand Violetility with the flowered foot jewelry Love in Idleness, Silly perfects this styling with the Titania Circlet around his head, featuring one of the many glorious gachas. I wonder what mischief will be wrought this evening.
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 69
Ah fair Lysander, be not jealous of Ruby Ornamental! Wicca’s Wardrobe hath cloaked her in a stunning strapless leather dress. Hermia would be envious of Ruby...look at how the ruffle gently flows atop her breasts, the floral corset hugs her midriff cinched with rose colored laces. Rose ties shrug one side of the skirt as well as tie the bodice top neatly. Be sure not to wake thee up with the wrong woman!

Carley Benazzi certainly looks ready to take the fashion world by storm with the Molly in Polka Dot Black and White ensemble. This stunning outfit accentuates the body in all the right places, with the harness really hugging those curves. The embellished shoulders adds just the right touch of fabulousness and is certainly a must have for any woman ready and willing to make a statement.

“Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous redhead.” Miele Tarantal is certainly that! Though she did try to hide those beautiful red locks with an equally beautiful hat by {Reverie} called the L.A. Woman Venice Hat in brown with a silver chain and brown flab. we’ll forgive her. Gorgeous in a simplistic dress by {Reverie} called Fleur de Amaryliss, Miele looks ready for the ride to work doning a black messenger back called the Traveler’s Bag by {Reverie}. Dream of gorgeous redheads everyone.

The Proust Spotlight is our monthly feature where we highlight one of the many creative residents of Second Life®. Utilizing the Proust Questionnaire, whose namesake comes from the late 19th century French writer, we will offer a glimpse into what makes them tick. Phoenix Wemyss is a talented blogger and photographer. He is grateful for the opportunity for people to get to know him better and thankful for all those that follow his work. He also shares with us, “NOeditiON has now 2 years and 2 months and if it wasn’t for my biggest friend and partner, the one I’ve chosen to be my wife, none of this would even be possible.”

What is your ideal of perfect happiness? Being able to put into practice the moral values and principles which drive me, simultaneously potentiating the achievement of my greatest dreams, side by side with my family which is the best! This is what I can consider being really happy. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Loyalty! No doubt... There is nothing, no other value or more important principle, mainly with friendship and even family ties, such as loyalty. A loyal person may have all the imperfections in the world but if she’s mate, a good partner, none of that is truely relevant. What do you consider your greatest achievement? In my personal real life, I can say that my greatest achievement was to conquer my independence and my own professional goals. To achieve stability due to the emotional side pushed for, half of my goals have already been achieved .. Now it’s all about following up... Speaking about SL life, I don’t think I’d need anything else. I have a perfect partner, also my love and best friend.. we both got to keep our project ahead.. we got the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in SL retail.. and of course, there’s nothing like doing what you really like to do.. in or out the SL metaverse. What do you most value in your friends? This answer will meet the 2nd one..Loyalty ... For me, loyalty is everything. I really appreciate someone, some friend who, even not being actually present, can keep keep that value. Someone who can understand my way of thinking, even sometimes different from his, and be acceptable that way. We all think and act differently. A person who is not loyal to me doesn’t even have space in my life. What is your greatest regret? My biggest regret would be perhaps, to take certain attitudes at special times that could have given a different turn in my life. Perhaps If I didn’t go through some situations or If I’d have been more rational and less emotional. But all is part of our learning so it is now accounted as life experience and a way to improve and correct any future mistakes. What is your motto? “Live Each Day As If It Was Your Last.” When you get to see some of your closest persons pass through some rough times, you have some kind of a wake up call and start to live like you have no time enough to do whatever you want to do. This usually works when you try to take it very serious. ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 87

Every living thing could use a little mercy now Only the hand of grace can end the race towards another mushroom cloud People in power, they’ll do anything to keep their crown I love life and life itself could use some mercy now Mary Gauthier It seems as though the world has gone mad. Every day there is a roll call of death and destruction. We ask what we can do and the answer is too damn little. It seems the world is out of control. A month ago, on June 12th, a man whose name should be erased slaughtered fortynine people whose names should never be forgotten. Does it matter whether he was motivated by ideology, selfloathing homophobia, or a twisted need for fame? Not to those forty-nine people. I doubt it matters to their families. No matter how hard we resist, we end up feeling exactly how they want us to feel – fearful, anxious, angry. We have a global case of post-traumatic stress disorder, an expectation that tomorrow or the next day or the day after that The Next Awful Thing will happen. They make us feel helpless, out of control and lost. And that is when we begin to despair.
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 115
Page 116 | ECLIPSE July 2016
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 117
We seek comfort in community. We reach out to friends, family and loved ones. We call home. We go to social media. We tweet, we plurk, we post. We sign petitions. We change our status and our profile picture signals our solidarity. We create memes of love and of anger and share them everywhere. We vent, we share our outrage, our anger and our grief. We need to do something. If we can’t do anything, there is no hope; there is only despair and hatred. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. “ And so we love. And of course we go to Second Life, our community, our world united, our shelter. And there in Second Life we can do something. No, we can’t turn swords into ploughshares or high-capacity rifles into bricks. We cannot drive hatred from the world or cure society of the disease of violence. But we can show our solidarity with the victims of hatred and grasp tightly to hope. In the last month, a fund raiser for the victims of the PULSE massacre raised US$20,000. Creators made things to sell with proceeds going to the fundraiser. It was also a personal auction. People auctioned off their skills their time, or their talents for the fundraiser. People gave of themselves and in so doing, they acted in opposition to hatred, they turned away violence and embraced love. Money does not heal hatred or cure madness or unmake violence. It cannot salve their grief and mend their broken hearts, but it does demonstrate that there are people who love them, who want to hold them and give them comfort. And in giving them comfort, find comfort themselves.
Page 118 | ECLIPSE July 2016
ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 119
Page 120 | ECLIPSE July 2016
Despair is our enemy. Despair is what will break us. We can’t fight despair by wishing it away. We fight with action. We gain control with action. We heal our own hearts by doing for others. That $20,000 will be helpful to the victims of the PULSE massacre. But before one penny reaches one person, it has already helped the people who made things, who organized, who publicized, who auctioned themselves, who attended and who shopped. That fundraiser gave them a way to act, to stand up to hatred, to reject despair and to embrace a world and a future defined by love and community.

Melenda Yarrowroot is the most recent talent to join Whispering Sands Live Promotions. Initially, she started singing for fun a year and a half ago at a club she used to manage during their karaoke events. She shares with us, “I was so scared to sing in front of people but being the host I had to start it each time we did it. I have a friend that would make me sing every night one song to get me over nerves in front of at least one person. She would always tp more than one person in though.” Encouraged by her friends and the hands of fate (via her stumbling upon an open mic), her career began from there. While this journey into the Second Life live artist community is fairly new for her, she is enjoying her journey. “So far it has been an amazing crazy ride, meeting all kinds of wonderful helpful people. Making a wide array of amazing talented friends along the way! It is like a crazy dream come true and so humbling.” Although she is a shy singer at first, she warms up quickly, “Never be afraid to msg me I almost never bite :D” Her passion for singing comes from her love of seeing others smile. She explains her unique perspective, “I love when a song touches someones heart or soul and gives them that happy sigh that only music can do. I am a firm believer that when words fail music will always speak volumes.” These are her top 5 favorite songs to sing: - Creep by Radiohead (cover) - It’s Oh So Quiet by Bjork - Seven Nation Army by White Stripes - Love Me Tender by Norah Jones - Love Song by Adele Listen to her here. Voices from the g
Voices From the Grid is a monthly survey of opinions and ideas of Second LifeÂŽ residents on the salient issues of the day. For this month, we asked various people in Second Life how Second Life has helped them explore their sexuality. This is what they had to say.

Novaleigh Freng Novaleigh Freng is a designer, model, blogger, dancer, and role-player in Second Life. She enjoys exploring the grid, building, entertaining, and making new friends where and when she can. She recently finished competing in the Miss Virtual Italy competition, where she represented the region of Tuscany and took 2nd Runner Up in the finale. Some people don’t know this about me, but in my real life, I was an active member of the often-misunderstood BDSM community. In recent years, I’ve seen the decline of my health in real life really affect my quality of life on many levels, but when I found Second Life, my eyes were opened to an entirely new world full of fun and interesting people, and that began to change things for me. I found that I could form relationships here and explore so many new things in a safe, comforting, and often educational environment, and it made me feel... better. I think in SL, it’s also almost easier to fall for someone. See, we can all make our avatars look however we want. When you get to know someone, you’re introduced to them through their words. You can oogle their pixels all day, but the person you’re getting to know is the one behind the avatar, and that’s important. I feel like that’s the reason some of us form such deep connections... Because we are able to be ourselves. Unfortunately, I also think that sometimes allows us to get more emotionally involved, which can be both a good and a bad thing. Check out her Store. Taylor Wassep Taylor Wassep has been in-world for over seven years, and he has loved mostly every minute of it. In that span of time, he has modeled, blogged, walked the runway, found friends from all around the world are among a few of the paths he has taken. But, it hasn’t been easy, especially because he is a cis gender male with a male and female avatar, he changes from time to time. One of the toughest areas he has experienced with playing both male and female avatars is finding love. Sexuality, the capacity for each person’s sexual feelings. That is the dictionary definition of sexuality, but can someone really compact human sexuality to just a single sentence? For centuries, humans have been placing themselves on this spectrum on who we like and how much we like them. Having a scale or labeling system is good enough for some people. Where other’s fide placing ourselves in a sexual bubble limits who we truly are and who we can be. Nearly seven years ago, I entered Second Life out of sheer boredom after getting out of surgery and unable to be active for a week or so. Seven years go, I was just 18 years old, at the beginning of finding who I am and what I like and don’t. By then, I knew I liked men, that I was gay and didn’t want a woman sexually in the least. I had one thing on my mine, like any normal 18-year-old, SEX. A totally primitive simplification of it, but sex is on the minds of many people; regardless of gender. And since it was such a primitive simplification, I had yet Page 164 | ECLIPSE July 2016

really explored what sexuality was and how it differed from sex. I knew sex was this intimate connection you shared with someone that in this moment, you were entered into this almost cosmic dance of two people. Walking that fine line of pleasure and pain, death and life, love and hate. Sex is an action, its what we do. Sexuality is who we are and what we like. Having sex in Second Life, can be difficult or strange for some people. Being around for as long as I have, you kind of understand what people enjoy doing. Some like sticking to emoting only, creating a kind of scripted narrative between two people. Some enjoying using animations to simulate sex in Second Life. Other enjoying using voice and actually hearing the other person, or even jumping on camera to show what they are doing. All of these various ways of enjoying sex steam from the simple start of who they want to have sex with. I think Second Life help steer me in a much more open-minded viewpoint with regard to sexuality. With me entering Second Life at such a crucial age, my path was bright and open to whatever was to come me way. Growing up where I did, the Gay Lifestyle was nearly zero, I went to high school in a country town where we had “Drive Your Tractor To School Day”, and small towns tend to not be so open to outside ideals or people. Though my friends know I was gay, I didn’t make that a known aspect of my life to other people. Nor should I have too, if they wanted to know, they could have asked, but I didn’t feel like I needed to “come out” to everyone. Many people feel like they ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 165
Page 166 | ECLIPSE July 2016
need to “come out” and showcase their new expressed sexuality. I just personally didn’t feel I needed too. If someone asked me, I wouldn’t lie - I didn’t in one of my classes at university when someone just asked me out of the blue. I just didn’t feel the need to express that. Maybe it was some form of shame or something, I’m not quite sure, but what I know for a fact is that I didn’t like who I found sexuality appealing dictate who I was and how I acted around people. From when I came into Second Life till now, I changed as a person; both physical and mentally. I grew up in these seven years and my person has matured and most importantly, my sexuality has bloomed into something beautifully. Being apart of the LGBTQ+ community is nothing to be ashamed about, it’s to be proud of. I get to be around such wonderfully diverse men and women and enjoy life as who I am. Second Life brought this light to my life; at the least got the spark going. Having the world at my finger tips is something past generations never had at their expense. Taking the time I have to grow relationships with people I’ve meet in Second Life are times I would never want to change about myself. Not just sexual relationships, but friendships as well. The acceptance of ones sexuality can have a rippling effect that impacts other aspects of our life, and I have only grown and improved myself by the people I’ve meet. And this improvement in my life could only have come from logging to this game called Second Life. ECLIPSE July 2016 | Page 167

catwalk academy & ag
ency
Catawalk Agency & Academy offers a comprehensive training course for aspiring models and a full-service runway fashion production with the aim of promoting designer client’s brands. With a combined fourteen years experience in the SL fashion industry, Vanessadelrio Underwood runs marketing and administration, while Vichonette Constantine runs the academy as director of education. Collectively, they are the owners and share responsibilities for the agency. They share with us what makes Catwalk different, “First and foremost, it is the philosophy of the principals that sets one agency apart from another. At Catwalk, we believe that modeling is a *job,* a model is only as good as his or her personal code of ethics, and we strive to instill a strong sense of responsibility into every individual who passes through our doors. We cater to the novice, or beginning model - those who have not attended training before and take them through a comprehensive course that goes beyond the basics of technical skill in order to prepare them for a career that is not always easy, but can be highly rewarding for the right individual with the right mindset. Catwalk was created to give models an outlet they may not otherwise find in SL. As a business, of course we hope it will pay for itself, but our goal is not to make a fortune for ourselves. Models, not money, are our priority, and we genuinely care about what we do. We also donate 20 percent of each student tuition to various charitable organizations and events both in world and in real life.” Keep an eye out for their first agency casting on July 23, 2016 @ 4PM SLT, and their first tentative show date is scheduled for August 20, 2016. For anyone interested in taking courses or joining their agency, they encourage you to check out their website, follow them on facebook or drop them a notecard in-world. Remember, if you tend to think “outside the box,” this is the agency and academy for you!
