Typically, I feel obligated to write a Publisher’s Note that qualifies as “long enough.” I do not feel the need today. However, Happy Mother’s Day! If I’m being pervasively honest, I also contemplated making the few words that appear here with a far larger font. I chose not to, as the idea was oddly reminiscent of something I might have attempted during my grade school years. Never let it be said, I have not grown and evolved! Despite my rambling and inability to verbalize anything really, this edition is jam packed with thirteen features, and I do hope you enjoy this issue. Happy Readings!

The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create. From “The Famished Road” by Ben Okri Six years ago mesh had just begun conquering the Second Life® grid. Suddenly we had hair that didn’t fall through our bodies which remained stubbornly triangular. We could decorate our homes lavishly because mesh creators could make a chair with a single prim though we weren’t counting prims anymore anyway. It was all about land impact and mesh seemed like a magical expansion of capacity in decor, landscape, and style. Into that brave new world of curves and smooth edges and conforming clothing, FaMESHed was launched by Cracked Mirror with able help from Sunbunny Moonites and Vanity Mirror. Mesh was a challenge for creators. It moved design and creation from in-world assembly of prims, sculpts, and textures to external creation in 3d modeling software programs such as Maya and Blender. The learning curve is steep and other than open-source Blender, the software is expensive. This was one of those adapt-ordie environmental shifts that stranded some designers and launched others.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 41
This created an incentive for designers whose skills were honed in texturing to rely on full-perm templates created by several template farms. While there is no legal or ethical prohibition on buying templates and designing for them, many customers really wanted to know they were getting original mesh–not something that may be sold in dozens of stores. FaMESHed answered that need by requiring designers produce only original mesh for the monthly event. It is possible that this gatekeeper function is one of the contributing factors to the success of FaMESHed and other events.
was a real hunger to see what was new and fresh and everything was new and fresh. As current owner Elvi Hartley [Elvira Midnight] explained, “FaMESHed was created to showcase the very best of original mesh creations so shoppers can discover what is new in mesh and so we can feed their hunger for these items. Which is something that even though I was not part of in the first two years, I have continued to keep this true to its word to this day.”
As soon as Cracked Mirror announced the event, excitement began to grow. So did speculation about how to pronounce the name. Was it a pun, It was an exciting time. Chairs and pointing out the grid-wide hunger couches were suddenly far more for mesh? Perhaps the name mocked popular because an avatar could sit on the SLebrity bestowed on successful it and have their skirt conform to their content creators. One blog even did a sitting position. The seldom-quite-right poll. prim flap began to disappear. There
Page 42 | ECLIPSE May 2018
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 43
Of course, I asked Hartley for the official answer. She laughed, responding “The much debated question! It is funny that this question is asked, because there have been several posts on Facebook in the last few months about how it is pronounced. I would say it is 50/50 in the polls most of the time of how it is pronounced, most are convinced it is Fame Shed but unfortunately, it is not! There are two ways to say FaMESHed, the easiest one would be saying famished, but the correct way is actually Fah-meshed. Sorry to let you all down!” Dang, my money was on Fame Shed! With any successful endeavor, there are conflicting strategies to maintain that success over time. On the one hand, there’s a reason “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a powerful and widely accepted maxim. On the other hand, still water stagnates and a shark that stops swimming suffocates. Somewhere in between you can find the careful road that FeMESHed has followed to stay fresh and new after six years, which is like sixty in organic years.

Page 46 | ECLIPSE May 2018
When asked what some of her strategies for a fresh FaMESHed have been, Hartley replied, “I think what keeps us fresh is our constant on the go, we are always trying to do new things at FaMESHed, or think of new ideas to bring to it. Some fail, some win. Such as live singers at our venue, our Anniversaries, our Designers, and of course, our Bloggers. All of these play well together, and we will continue to keep bring new and exciting things to the event. We are always trying to do that perfect balance of categories such as female and male fashion, shoes, accessories, hair and home/ garden. We keep it fresh for our shoppers, and our designers.” Hartley points out that the “concept, idea, and values of FaMESHed have not changed, all we have really done is fine tune the details of the event, to make it the event that it is today. We like to try new things, to keep it all fresh. We honestly do not want the event to go stale, so we work hard in making sure this does not happen. There are always things that we are working on to keep making sure that we are top on top of things, for example we are working on a gadget for our Shoppers and our Designers, that will help many with their shopping list and possibly any lag waiting times when they arrive at the event.” In essence, the mission remains the same and the FaMESHed team adapts to trends and customer needs. One of the best ways to stay on top of your customers needs and be responsive to their concerns is creating an in-world community,
using SL groups. The FaMESHed in-world group has about 22,000 members. A year ago, for their fifth anniversary, FaMESHed opened group chat and were met with an enthusiastic response. Hartley enthused, “Oh, I simply adore our in-world community... Our in world community is insane but in a good way. Their eagerness to get into the event, how they go crazy over the Designers items, how they help each other out or do silly things of saying “Oh I am leaving now, get ready to get in!” - these are just the little things that we really enjoy. They make me laugh a lot. Our team is very hands on with our community whether it is the Facebook Page or the In World Group. Plus we love their feedback too, and we listen to them always which helps make it a better shopping experience for them!” One innovation Hartley has brought to FaMESHed is the new FaMESHed Go. Hartley was feeling nostalgic for the old mainstore shopping experience. She recalled the ingenuity and effort put into creating beautiful stores and sims that anchor those stores. The ascetic spare beauty of ISON’s mainstore sim or the lush countryside at Izzie’s or the glorious heydey of the idiosyncratic Starlust sims that still glimmer in memory were so much a part of the shopping experience. The longing for the mainstore experience is rooted in the real loss of a kind of experience that cannot be replicated by admiring the creative design of a vendor stall. ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 47
Hartley wanted to bring back the mainstore shopping experience back, with a FaMESHed twist. By rewarding shoppers for shopping at mainstores. She elaborated, “I know that when I go main store shopping, I get excited because I discover so many things I have missed before so therefore I go crazy spending money.”
she sought a social media and public relations manager, hiring Kess Crystal. Pleased with Crystal’s contributions, she soon added her liaisons Anabelle Marquis, Grace Sixpence and Sadystika Sabretooth, connections she made through Crystal’s network. They added a fourth liaison recently–Anashara Dubois. Dubois originally joined the team as a chat moderator for the FaMESHed She continued, “Designers work so hard Update Group. Her hard work and to give us beautiful spots for their stores positive attitude convinced Hartley and we hardly pay attention to it. They organize their list she took on all the responsibilities, of designers for the next round, making almost a one-woman show which sure they all change a chance to be in overburdened her. She recalled, “Now each round. The blogger manager is I think back on it which was just under checking the work of current bloggers two years ago that I used to do this all and looking for new ones. ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 49
Part of that neverending work is balancing Hartley’s determination to remain true to Cracked Mirror’s original concept while freshening the event in ways that bring excitement and novelty. She’s describes the balancing act as keeping Mirror’s vision in mind while bringing in her own ideas. She recently rebranded FaMESHed. “I wanted to make it fresh and alive. I have always visioned FaMESHed to be this simple, classic, timeless event. So when, we started planning the rebranding of FaMESHed, we went back and forth on the colours a lot, how we wanted the building to be. I have this whole document full of ideas of how I wanted the building to be.” After a hiccup in layout and organization in October that Hartley labelled disastrous, Apple Fall drew on her ideas, added his own spin, and created a new building that she fell for immediately even in its untextured state. They had planned a new building for the Sixth Anniversary, but after October they needed an immediate fix. “The building is a work in progress still and there is more to come for the building, but we wanted to have something in place as it was vital to us to have the layout fixed for our shoppers. But, there is still more to come to this building but nothing drastic, just a bit of maintenance to keep the event fresh and updated! So watch this space, only more exciting things to come!” Hartley is uncharacteristically modest (for an event owner) Page 50 | ECLIPSE May 2018
when distinguishing FaMESHed from other events. Eschewing the usual superlatives, she emphasized her love of all events. She thinks what she brings to FaMESHed is her own enthusiasm. “I am a shopping fanatic, and I think it is part of the reason why Cracked Mirror had hired me to be the Manager of FaMESHed back then because I am bringing that same level of enthusiasm and enjoyment to the shoppers and the designers. So I look at the event as both as a shopper and a designer (even though I do not create, I try to make sure that I understand both sides). I always try to go that one step further than I need to because I want both sides happy.” So what does Hartley think makes an event successful. She thought this was a tough question, “I am sure it is a question many event owners/managers ask themselves all the time. How do we make our event great? What can we do to improve it? This is something that I am always asking people, of what improvements they would like to see, I throw out surveys to our designers so we can hear their thoughts and work from there. We are always trying to be up-to-date or in-the-know, but it is no easy task. So I think really a great event happens because people work hard at it or never give up. I believe the key elements to any event is organization, shoppers, bloggers and the designers. All four of those things play a big role in any event, without shoppers we would have no designers. No shoppers without the bloggers.” ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 51
Running one of the premier monthly shopping events has changed Hartley’s Second Life experience. Thanks to working with designers, she has a deeper understanding of how hard they work on their items. It’s given a new appreciation to the value bloggers bring by generating enthusiasm and turnout. She also sees shoppers in a new light, valuing their reactions to items and to change. She added, “You know, if someone had said to me over 4 years ago, that I would be the owner of FaMESHed or even be asked to manager of it. I would have laughed my head off, because I don’t think I could believe it. Even till this day, I still can’t believe that I am part of this event. When I was just a shopper before managing an event, I had no idea how hard they worked.. My world has been expanded, discovering all these stores, bloggers, and of course, I have made some great friends from it all.” Like most of us, Second Life has also had an effect on her first life. In her own words, “Second Life has been this world that has been my oyster in terms of creativity. I am a creative person in real life, and I get to express it here. I have met some great people off Second Life, and I hold them close to my heart. I have had many ups and down in Second Life, but I take them on as learning experiences and try my best to strengthen myself from it. There are many things to Second Life, either up or down, it is up to us as individuals to make the best of each situation. Though, I have had many things thrown at me, I have never given up even when I tried to and those close to me, did not let me give in. Second Life as helped me in so many ways, be more confident, realise what my strengths and weaknesses are, and what fields I am best at which has helped me with my real life things, too.”

It is six long years since FaMESHed debuted and the hunger for quality original mesh continued sated, but unabated. During these years, FaMESHed has been a home to many designers. Some of the most successful designers in Second Life debuted their first releases at FaMESHed. Among those who launched at FaMESHed are Seven Emporium, Apple Fall, Dust Bunny, and many, many more. FaMESHed is also where many, like Heart Botanical, made their transition from sculpts to mesh. Hartley said, “It makes us extremely proud that we have been lucky enough to have homed so many amazing designers. We are always on the lookout for new designers to bring to FaMESHed, it is what we hunt for all the time so we can showcase them! Last but definitely not least, at this event, it is always 100% original mesh designs here.” It is fitting that Hartley ended her interview focusing on the one thing–100% original mesh design–that inspired Cracked Mirror to create FaMESHed in the first place. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Teleport to FaMESHed. Follow Elvira Hartley on Flickr. Check out FaMESHed on Flickr, their Facebook and website. Check out the FaMESHed Go website.

tive y by oema.
The DixMix Art Gallery, one of the most historic and renowned art galleries in Second LifeÂŽ, is owned by DixMix Source and Megan Prumier. For those who do not know it yet, it is a stop notto-be-missed in the SLÂŽ art community because the owners and art curators have, for years now, demonstrated an uncanny ability to choose artists who, after their exhibits at the gallery, gain popularity.
Page 66 | ECLIPSE May 2018
Sometimes I have the pleasure of exchanging some opinions with DixMix about current SL artists and, in one of our first meetings, I remember he told me that he spent time finding good photographers and artists on Flickr. In fact, many photographers and artists are not known but have extraordinary abilities. Some of them have never even exhibited their artworks at an inworld art gallery.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 67
Before talking about the individual artists who currently exhibit their works, it is essential to understand the premise of the gallery names, so that, upon arrival of the beautiful structure of Fanatik masterfully adapted to an art gallery by Megan Prumier, the visitor perceive the structure of the exhibition. The DixMix Art Gallery hosts three galleries, the Gray Gallery, at the entrance of the structure, as already mentioned, the Black Gallery, proceeding on the right and, finally, the White Gallery. The names of the galleries vary according to the prominence of the color in the images, to give the spectator an art show consisting of different styles and colors. The first exhibition is titled “Hair” by Magic Marker. The reason for this title is evident the instant you see her images where, under different profiles, the hair is the focus of the scene. In some cases, the hair is strong and sensual, in others weak and dull, but in any case, they “speak,” “communicate” the story of the person to whom they belong. Hair as an expression of one’s own identity, of one’s way of being. The second exhibition is titled “U’Online” and Vallysvalife is the artist. Images that strike for the idea ofwomen who walk on a red thread, as if they are
Page 68 | ECLIPSE May 2018
a metaphorical expression of the severe condition that the female sex must face in some cases of existence. DixMix explained to me that he put red strings in front of the images and, if clicked, you can sit on them to be in the best position to observe the pictures. Before moving on to the third gallery, the white one, I suggest going down to the right to visit the Womb Gallery which hosts the images of the beautiful minimalist artist Melusina Parkin. The title of her exhibit is “Less is more” that capture the idea of the artist that the essential is already more than enough to communicate effectively. To visit the White Gallery, you have necessary to go up the stairs where the exhibiting artist is Mr. S. His photographs are striking for the intense realism and the ability to communicate. Looking at the photos we realize that they are avatars and virtual worlds, but the effect obtained with the lights and the extremely natural poses is a feeling of reality, even if it is virtual. At the bottom of the Black Gallery is the Atom Gallery which hosts the artistic works of Mystero Hifeng at the time of writing. The artist who soon will take the place of Mystero will be Giovanna Cerise.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 69
I recommend taking the opportunity that DixMix Gallery offers to enjoy a collection of exciting and very communicative 2D and 3D artists. Moreover, landmark this art gallery, an important reference point for years, so you can go back to explore it in time to see more new, up and coming artists. Teleport to DixMix Art Gallery.

In 2006 many firsts happened in Second Life® such as: Anshe Chung gracing the cover of the U.S. magazine BusinessWorld, the one thousandth person entering SL, and Sadystika Sabretooth making her first appearance in world. A real life friend brought her into SL introducing her to the more kinky and debaucherous side of SL and encouraging her to become a lady of the evening; however, she decided that wasn’t for her. Sabretooth started taking photos a few months after coming into Second Life but didn’t start trying her hand at blogging until 2013. It wasn’t until March 2016 when she decided to try blogging again after not sticking with it. Then after a few posts Sabretooth became addicted to blogging. When she needs to edit her photos, Sabretooth uses a variety of applications. One might offer a filter she likes while she might use the effects from another. The one program she uses the most is PicMonkey®. When
Page 78 | ECLIPSE May 2018
not taking photos in SL and editing them Sabretooth writes poetry or loves to draw and paint. Inspiration for a photo could come from a song she heard, something she saw online or simply from her crazy imagination. “When I make a photo sometimes I create my own scenes. Sometimes I travel to a specific sim, because I know they have a theme that will work perfectly for an outfit. I never do green screen or use stock photos for blog post backgrounds. I will however use a premade background as a base for a scene,” explained Sabretooth. Sabretooth considers her style to be diverse depending on her mood and what is going on in her life. Since Sabretooth began her blog Sady’s Style one of her best friends, Kess Crystal, has been one of her biggest blogger inspirations. Grace Sixpence, Rina Grayson and many other bloggers and artist inspire her as well. In fact some of those women were even in her first blog post back in March 2016.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 79
Within a few months of blogging Sabretooth was approached on Flickr by her first sponsor and within six months she was blessed with being able to blog for some great brands. She was ecstatic when she was able to become a blogger for Cynful. “I had been a fan of their clothes for so long and now not only do I blog for them, but I’m a moderator of their group. All of those girls have become really good friends to me. They’ll have to fire me to get rid of me. With that said, I’m always excited when I get a new sponsor. It just blows me away that anyone likes what I do enough to give me something to work with,” said Sabretooth. Using a spreadsheet for her sponsors that are not on Blogotex helps keep Sabretooth on time to meet her blogging deadlines. To spread the word about her blog she uses Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Google+. It shocks and humbles Sabretooth when people read her blog or follow her on Flicker because she feels there are many bloggers out there better than her.
Page 80 | ECLIPSE May 2018

Page 82 | ECLIPSE May 2018
Determination, networking, wonderful friends, luck, consistency, diligence, integrity...being true to herself are all things Sabretooth cites as reasons for her success as a blogger. She will always blog her favorite brands even if she might not have them as one of her sponsors. “Blog for yourself. Do not start a blog just to get free stuff. Blog because it brings you joy or peace or comfort. Blog because you love it and don’t sell out your integrity for anyone,” Sabretooth says. As Second Life changes so does Sabretooth. She continues try grow as a blogger constantly experimenting with her photography skills, trying to make unique photos using her imagination to showcase her style. She also hopes to improve editing her photos for blogging. While she grows as a blogger sometimes she needs to let go of a sponsor so that she can change things up, or she might need to cut back on her sponsors for blogging. Whenever she does that it feels like she is constantly breaking up with someone and it hurts despite knowing it needed to be done.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 83
Page 84 | ECLIPSE May 2018
As a blog manager, she wants to make sure the designers she represents are seen by many people in the best way possible. So she looks for quality photos with a lot of faves when she looks at bloggers’ photos. When she looks at a potential blogger’s blog, an auto music player or a cluttered look she considers difficult to maneuver. At the moment she is a blog manager for ChicModa, Runaway Hair, United Colors, and Quasi. One time she asked to step in for the blog manager for Cynful and that’s what started her love for being a blog manager. When she has time Sabretooth would love to become a blog manager for more brands. Looking forward into her future as a blogger Sabretooth will be blogging for a new event called Vanity. She is looking forward to what it will bring as it is a new event, and she isn’t sure what to expect. One thing she won’t be
tackling in the future is vlogging because she dislikes her voice. When Sabretooth is not blogging she loves to hang out with her friends being crazy in Second Life, and meet people from all over the world. She also loves to attend live music shows. “I will never understand anyone that sits in SL and claims to be bored. I’ve been here since 2006 and I’ve never been bored in world. There’s simply too much to see and do,” says Sabretooth. Sabretooth is grateful for everyone that reads her blog and follows her on Flicker. It makes her feel very blessed and amazed that people love her work. “I’d like to thank each and every person. I never imagined something like this would come from blogging,” said Sabretooth. Check out her Flickr and Blog.

When asked to share something about herself, she tells us, “Adalynne joined SL in 2012 as just something fun to do and explore. Since 2015, She has dove into blogging and photography not knowing where it would lead, but enjoying the ride. It has not only become a ‘Job” but a true passion and healthy addiction. ”

What is your ideal of perfect happiness? A baby’s laugh... Doesn’t matter what kind of day I have, when I hear their laugh, everything else just melts away. Pure Bliss. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Definitely, Absolutely, Indeed and of course, Y’all ;) What do you most value in your friends? Loyalty, Trust and Honesty What is your greatest regret? No regrets. Living in regret gets you absolutely no where and forces you to live in the past. Everything I’ve done in my life has pushed me to where I am today and I wouldn’t change a thing. How would you like to die? Who doesn’t want to die peacefully in their sleep? Lets make it more interesting though, When choosing fire or ice, I would chose to Ice, freeze to death. Eventually you become numb and you drift to sleep. Fire may seem quick, but just too much for me. What is your motto? ‘It’s the moment you think you can’t that you realize you can” Every since stumbling across that quote, I’ve applied it to life everyday. It is odd but it is almost as if it lights a fire in me to let me know I can accomplish anything. Connect with Adalynne on her Flickr and Blog.

When one is teleported to the Jagged Edge, they land on an Adult semi-tropical island and step into an outdoor music venue that lives up to its name, Being built with sharp protruding edges. On one side of the music venue is the ocean with rocky island cliffs coming out of the ocean and a small beach. Then walking out of Jagged Edge onto the island there is a small forest with a walkway. At nighttime settings the forest becomes lit up with the lights that adorn the trees. In the small forest there garden statues, various places to sit and relax with friends, family or a date. Scattered in different spots there are gaming tables if interested in a game of Greedy or Cards Against Humanity while listening to live music. If fishing and listening to live music seems appealing there is a small pond in the forest with floating lily pads, a place to buy a fishing pole, and a deck for sitting on and fishing at. Past the pond there is a white house that serves as a commune for people to relaxt, get a massage or do yoga while listening to live music.

When Keileigh Galaxy built Jagged Edge, a live music venue, in November 2015 she was inspired to do so because she wanted to share her love of music with others. When Galaxy started booking live musicians for Jagged Edge, she ran into Jorrdan Jarman. Jarman was managing many of the live musicians Galaxy was booking for the Jagged Edge. “Jorr, my husband, has been involved in Jagged Edge Almost since the beginning,” explained Galaxy. Some of the most well-known live musicians such as: Toxie Darkmatter, AM Forte, DirtyDee Sweetwater, AleyKat, and Sassy Nitely can be seen performing at the music venue. As Jarman began to manage more live musicians he formed Whispering Sands, a full service entertainment agency that helps clients book live musicians throughout Second Life®. Whispering Sands also has a radio station for live musicians. There is a subscribo placed in Jagged Edge for Whispering Sands. If the subscribo is clicked, a notecard is sent to the subscribers detailing the schedules of many of the live performers that Jarman represents and where they will be playing with landmarks. Many of Jagged Edge’s musicians come from Whispering Sands, but they also hire performers from outside of Whispering Sands. To book at Jagged Edge Jarman or Voom Lane need to be contacted.

Page 106 | ECLIPSE May 2018
Sitting between the subscribo for Whispering Sands and the host tip jar in the music venue there is a large board with the link for Jagged Edge’s in-world group, the venue tip jar, and a landmark for the live music venue. If in-world group room is scarce there is a link for Jagged Edge’s subscribo group and a link for their calendar. When the link for the calendar is clicked it leads to the online calendar for scheduled live performances at Jagged Edge. Every Monday and Wednesday of each week different genres of live musicians can be found performing a onehour set. “The most popular instruments played by live musicians are the guitar and the piano/keyboard; however some
musicians play a variety of instruments. We also have some performers who are vocalists as well as performers who are accompanied by an instrument,” said Galaxy. Located on another side of the venue a wall displays designers and organizations that sponsor Jagged Edge. Some fairly well-known stores such as Cynful and Chic Moda sponsor Jagged Edge. Another little sign next to the sponsor board when clicked leads off to the website for Second Life Live Music. This website was made to assist music venue owners and live performers in better communicating their schedules. Currently the website is still in its early stages.

When the middle of April hit, Relay for Life season launched in Second Life. Kiosks started being passed out to different places and organizations that were interested in raising Lindens to transfer over to real life money to help the real life Relay for Life organization support the fight against cancer. Jagged Edge on a regular basis teams up with Relay for Life. Sitting in the music venue at the moment are four kiosks. Joining the Harmony of Hope team for RLF, they recently adorned the venue with purple heart balloons, purple flowers, purple cushions and other purple decorations for a party to raise Lindens for Relay

for Life. On May 2nd they held a party for Relay for Life with six wonderful performers and many other people were involved helping out. They raised $L167,760 on that day and are grateful for everyone who was involved and hope to raise more Lindens for the event. “We host benefits and fundraisers to help individuals. On May 12th we will be hosting a benefit for Toxie Darkmatter to help offset her real life medical costs,” explained Galaxy. The Jagged Edge has often in the past been decorated for the holidays and themed parties. In March 2018 they participated in Mad Pea’s egg hunt.

Galaxy likes to keep the atmosphere laid back and casual at Jagged Edge. She wants patrons always feel comfortable being themselves, and hopwa they can have fun with their family, friends, or date while relaxing and listening to live music. As the building methods improve and the overall taste of the public change, the atmosphere at Jagged Edge changes to keep up with it. As time goes on Galaxy hopes to hire more live musicians from different music styles to perform at Jagged Edge, and to keep sharing live music with everyone who wants to come and have a good time on the sim. Teleport to Jagged Edge. Follow Jagged Edge on Facebook. Check out Jagged Edge’s Calendar.

the world of role

City of Morrison is a mature, adult-themed roleplay community in the virtual world of Second Life that has a heavy focus on character and player freedom. Embark on a journey in a dark, gritty city that is plagued by crime, systemic corruption, and poverty. There is no light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to this Michigan locale. The only question that remains to be asked is whether or not will you make it from one day to the next. City of Morrison is a fairly new sim, and by fairly new I mean it opened April 20, 2018, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it is too fresh for the discerning taste. It is a complete and ready-to-play sim with over three hundred international members.
Page 116 | ECLIPSE May 2018
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 117
Page 118 | ECLIPSE May 2018
The idea of the sim was a combination of the owner wanting to do modern urban with a mix of current real world situations like the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. The storytellers of the sim have adopted a similar unfortunate circumstance to help facilitate the downtrodden atmosphere of a once inspiring and prosperous town. Clementine Craft (phantom.weir) is the builder of the sim. She put the physical idea together and is part of the admin team that helps with backside issues including but not limited to new citizens and job applications. She said it only took a few months to create the sim from the moment of idea conception to when it opened back in April. Clementine states, “We have a fairly small staff. Admins oversee and mostly help to regulate the staff themselves. We have our rental admins. Moderators who handle day to day security and help to answer most questions. With mentors who help aid players with simple questions and help them to get into the RP if they are unsure how. Takashi Haramori and Linu Zhangsun are responsible for the overall operations of the community and the estate. They process banishment issues, ban appeals, estate health, and rentals. As a general rule, administrators should not be bothered unless there is an urgent issue relating to sim security.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 119
Vanora Blackheart, Terranblade, Avras Mulligan, and Bleedingsnow are game moderators. They provide player support, moderation, and general security for the estate and the community. They can assist with disputes, failed group invites, and player reports, and are also responsible for coming up with story lines and other community engagement opportunities. Elseworth Dagger, Bridgette Smalls, and Dion03 are mentors and can assist with questions regarding sim information, and role play questions. It is encouraged to reach out to a mentor for questions or clarification regarding sim rules. Forsaken Later can be reached regarding rental contracts. Clementine describes Morrison as, “...an immersive fictional city, based out of Michigan. Offering the option for various role play opportunities, from being a homeless squatter up to being on the police force and even the option to open your own business in the town. Crime is rampant, wages are low and water is filthy. It’s hard in Morrison, but it’s the sort of city for someone who wants that more gritty experience in their role play.” Page 120 | ECLIPSE May 2018
There is a wide variety of character development to choose from. You can just be an everyday person trying to make a living in a fairly poor city, someone who just wants to make ends meet, or even a transient who ended up in Morrison by less than pleasant means. A lot of those that are role playing as cops are creating backstories of being transferred to the city in an attempt to try and cull the rising crime, but the pay cuts and reduced city resources create a different kind of in-character tension. Of course there is also plenty of opportunity to be a criminal, whether it be small time or, for the more adventurous, the option to create your own gang is also encouraged. Sim-sponsored gangs may be granted access to a small amount of highpowered weapons, however this is at the discretion of management. “We also have the Fire Department and we’re getting RP in the court house off the ground, for people who want to be lawyers. We have a lot of options, pretty much anything you can do in modern times. Besides being overly rich, because Morrison is not rich, adds Clementine.
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 121
Along with the police and fire departments, City of Morrison also has a general hospital and civil services. Morrison Civil Services is responsible for housing several departments that are provided by the city itself. This includes the Department of Social Services, and the Morrison District Court. Various positions range from social workers, water distribution workers, as well as housing the District Attorney’s Office. Private sector lawyers and public defenders are also housed within the Civil Services registry. And then there is The Family. A small gang, they are a tight-knit group that lives up to their gang name. They are comprised of what most cops would describe as loners, transients, and even psychos that have decided to band together. While not entirely incorrect, the group often takes offense to those remarks. There is no shortage of rumors about the kind of people who are part of The Family. They are broken, they are lost, they are in need. The Family aims to offer stability among like-minded people. Contact isn’t easy to make, but those who are truly interested in joining are seen and they’re known. The Family only wants the best. Contact Takashi Haramori or Phantom Weir about Family business. While City of Morrison certainly isn’t the first of its kind, Clementine offers insight on how she feels it differs from sims of a similar theme. “I feel we’re slightly more immersive than some others we’ve seen. With the build and with the backstory we tried to offer something for everyone to play off such as offering the difficulty of the water crisis and the poverty of the city.” If you’re tired of getting lost in massive cities with multiple sims complete with crazy cliques, City of Morrison just might be what you are looking for. Come take a look around, engage, create. Visit them in-world. Check out their website. Page 122 | ECLIPSE May 2018

AleyKat is one of the many talented live artists from Whispering Sands Live Promotions. She has been with them for close to two years and is grateful for their constant support and hard work. When asked to describe her sound, she shares, “My sound is kinda unique... I try to sing well known songs in a different way to how they are usually heard. Most of my shows are upbeat and lots of fun- mainly because I have a fantastic group of people who come and spend their time with me day after day, for which I’m eternally grateful!” Her musical inspiration is anyone that sings with heart and passion. “When someone puts their whole soul into their performance... that is an incredible experience.” When asked about the most meaningful song she has sung during a performance, she names “All I Ask” by Adele. “There is something about that song that gets me right in the feels every time. You can feel the desperation and sadness in each word. And hey, sometimes it’s good to let it all out and have a good cry right? :D” As an experienced musicians in Second Life, we asked what advice she would give for someone first starting out in the Second Life music scene. “To work your butt off and stay humble.” For a sample of her musical talent, check out her SoundCloud.

ask noey: the advice guru
send your questions to noey here, and it might be in our next issue. written by noey ivy london f
flower. photography by wicca merlin.
Dear Noey, My best friend is beautiful. She is everything I want in life. We have been friends for almost four years. Half of which we spent not speaking for a variety of reasons. We have already tried dating, and it hasn’t worked out. Our friendship was perfect, but then she got a boyfriend. I feel like I’m not her priority anymore, and it hurts me. Is there anything I can say or do to make this better? Or at least make the hurt stop? Forgotten Finny Dear Forgotten Finny, I think you need to be honest with yourself first and foremost. Anytime any of us or a friend enters into a relationship, friendships take a step down. I think its a little bit of a natural step, but of course you will no longer be the priority. Good friends always try to include or find a balance in all their relationships. I dont think that’s really the issue here.....I think you need to come to terms that you and her will not be what you would like. You have to accept that. Because whats going to end up happening here is a very ugly thing called “bitterness”. And that’s an ugly face to walk around with. If you cant get around that, then a friendship may never be able to sustain that either. Perhaps taking a little time away. Hang out with some other friends. Meet new ones... give yourself some time away from her. So then that way you can come back to this situation again and make a more clear headed decision on your feelings. You have to decide if you care about her enough to let go of your own feelings and be her friend, or for the mental health of yourself that you need to step away. Either way take that time to yourself to figure it out.
Page 182 | ECLIPSE May 2018
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 183
Dear Noey, I’m part of a roleplay community, and I really do enjoy it. The thing is that I have a lot of other things going on in my Second Life outside of roleplay. My friends there don’t understand this. Also, some of them confuse the behavior and personality of my character for who I actually am. This is frustrating. What’s the best way to approach this? Signed, Irritated Irene Dear Irritated Irene, Best way? Who cares if they dont understand that you like to do other things in Secondlife other than roleplay? This is your SL. You do not need to explain yourself to anyone about the stuff you do in world, as long as its not harming other people. If they cant understand that you are not going to be “In” character when you are not actively RPing....then you are surrounded by a bunch of not so bright people. Do they act the same as they do RPing as they do in RL? Do they walk around their work pretending to be Vikings or Pirates? It sounds like to be they are being totally selfish. Try explaining to them that although you love to RP, that you also enjoy alot of other things in world. Also let them know that you are going to be “you” out of the RP community. If they cant understand that....then it might be time for some different friends. RPing with them is fine, but you might have to leave it on the sim. Just stand your ground, be you, and allow yourself to have fun and not let yourself get wrapped up in what they think!
Page 184 | ECLIPSE May 2018
ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 185
Dear Noey, I have a solid group of friends. There’s about a dozen of us, and we each bring in our own little group. A few people in the group are content creators. Recently, one of them hit it“big”as in they’re being invited to all the big events. Since then, they have become really arrogant and full of themselves. Everyone is at the point of wanting to cut him off. We’ve tried speaking to him, but he thinks everyone is just jealous of him. Should we cut him off, or try speaking to him again? He was a really cool guy before but now he’s just… unbearable to be around. Signed, Torn Tommy Dear Torn Tommy, He’s a grown man....at least I think he is. SO if he wants behave like that, let him. He will figure it out after a while. He will find himself alone or wondering why everyone suddenly stopped hitting him “up”. If hes acting like a jerk, then you dont need to surround yourself with someone like that. As for the rest of the group? Well that’s their choice. You need to make the decision on whats best for you. Don’t bad mouth him either, that would be behavior that is just as bad as his. If the group wants to hang out and hes around, just tell them you dont feel like being around him. Just make the decision for yourself and not just be a part of the flock.... And its definitely great that hes made it “big” in “SL”. Doesn’t matter where you are in life or how far ahead you get, you never forget about the people who were there before that. And you most certainly dont treat people like crap, because all of us add something to SL. If hes still that cool guy, the slap in the face of silence will wake him up. I say let him act like a immature little boy. Karma is a bitch!

caitlin tobias
aitlin Tobias, Cait or Caity, as she is called by her friends, was born in Second Life in August 2007. It did not take long for her to discover the world of Samurais and Katana fighting and in 2009 together with her friends Rattus and Pilar she founded the ‘The ImperiuM Katana’, a school for Katana fighting and lots of fun. The clan was a success, but to all good things comes an end, and in April 2012 the ImperiuM was put on inactive. After her fighting days, she dedicated her Second Life to exploring and blogging about cool places to share with you. Besides her own blog, Caitlin has been a contributor/author for the SL Blogger Support website and group since 2013. In 2016 she took over the role as Owner/Manager from Katya Valeska till the SLBS group closed and merged with BVN in December 2017. Caitlin is a guest-writer/photographer for the Fantasy Faire on their official site during the event since 2014. She also likes to go clubbing, shop for fashionable clothes and accessories, and indulging in taking ‘arty’ pictures for the fun of it, most of which you will find on her Flickr stream. Wow, this question brings back so many good memories! When I arrived in Second Life, in 2007, it took me a month to discover I could actually leave orientation island – yeah...I thought that island *was* Second Life. Anyway, once I left I felt a bit lost but soon I ended up in a sim called Amsterdam, looking for something familiar and perhaps some other Dutch people. As it happened I ran into an old RL friend, a girl I met on Compuserve Chat and also in real life and we were both surprised we never told each other we were active in Second Life! (We both used our old Compuserve nicknames as SL accounts, that’s how we found out). Anyway, she had some Dutch friends who owned a casino in Second Life and she worked there as poker-dealer. Gambling was allowed in those days and mainland was filled with huge (ugly, shiny, blingy) casino’s. She hired me as Hostess in the Casino, so my first job was greeting visitors and getting them to sit down at at poker-table and play poker. I needed a formal gown for that job, for which she gave me LS – as an advanced payment for my first week. I still have that gown, a purple flexi dress by Blaze Colombia – and I remember it was very expensive, something like 900 L$. The poker business was thriving and I made a lot of L$, the more people ended up at a table, the more L$ I got – payment day was on a Saturday, meaning I went on shopping sprees on Sunday mornings. Good times! The bling shoes, the bling jewelry and fullbright blonde hair, I got it all! Because the Casino was huge, it was a building over 3 sims, I had to walk around a lot to catch potential gambler, and so I had to cross the simborders all the time. This meant I lost my hair and shoes about three times per hour, but that happened to all of us. After a month of being a greeter/ hostess, I got promoted to be a Poker Dealer, so I got to manage my ‘own’ tables with customers and made obscene amounts of L$. I spent every night in the Casino and if I am honest: no, it wasn’t that much fun. My L$ balance was amazing, the money kept pouring in, but the actual ‘job’ was a bore and over time I realised I was making money by enabling peoples addiction. It started to not feel right. For the record, I never gambled or played poker myself, I just handled the table and sent out messages to get people to play. In fact, I do not even know how to play poker! When I returned from a month of Real Life vacation, Linden Lab had banned gambling and when I logged in the casino’s were all gone. In a way I was not too devastated, the whole poker business was wearing me out and the feeling it was not right was taking over. Protests were happening, I didn’t participate, and lots of people thought this was the end of Second Life It wasn’t! What I did? I decided to get rid of my Poker past and since I only knew gamblers (who kept on IMing me daily to beg for illegal games) I created an alt, named her Caitlin Tobias, and transferred all my L$ to her. I used my poker money to buy Katanas and start a Samuarai clan with friends. From the rest of the L$ I purchased a mainland parcel and this is still my Second Life home. (Oh in case you wonder: my 7ft tall, fullbright blonde, orange skinned, non mesh poker-dealer has been sleeping since 2008) Check out her Flickr and Blog. ECLIPSE May 2018 | Page 193

ara Baez joined SL ten years ago and had a construction company and is part of a new member help group, but what has always fascinated her was the photos and the many styles that inspired her to create a blog three years ago.
My first job in Sl was on an island of help for new players, it was there that I learned how to build, to photograph and I fell in love with this game. Check out her Flickr and Blog.

hyralei joined Second Life in 2011 as a roleplay alt for her original 2009 avatar, but this version quickly became her true virtual voice. She began blogging in 2014, and started offering Photoshop and photography services in 2016. Shyralei is the Blogger Manager for AsteroidBox and continues to roleplay at Convergence: The Lost City, but owes her creative inspiration to her wonderful sponsors: Aii The Ugly & Beautiful, [an lar] poses, CULT, Dark Passions, Fantasy Gacha Carnival, [I<3F] & co, Kio-Kio, kosmii, Truth Hair, UniCult, United Colors, Violent Seduction, Violetility, WetCat, Wicca’s Wardrobe and Zibska. My first official job in Second Life was a host position at a club, but that never felt like a job. It was just fun, like hanging out with your friends listening to great tunes. The actual effort began when I decided to start blogging. I wanted a way I could save really cool looks I’d created rather than overwhelming my SL Outfits’ folder. Blogging allowed me to create images of favorite looks and detail what I was wearing so I could reference them later easily. I started following other bloggers on Flickr and gained inspiration to develop my own style into something more creative. There was a lot of trial and error before I evolved into what my blog is today, and I’m sure it will change again in time. I used to be afraid of redefining my style, but I like to apply an anthropological mindset to it. Cultural things that are not dynamic, that do not change with the times become irrelevant. I look back at my first blog from December 2014 and no longer cringe. It’s not a bad blog post. It was just the first step in my journey of growth as a blogger. I like to think my style is like a fine wine: better with age! Check out her Flickr, Blog and Facebook.

My first job in Second Life is to take screenshots and blog! I like to take screenshots, I enjoy spending time choosing outfits and making sets to achieve the image floating in my head. Since April of this year, my blogger’s work at my favorite shop began and my enjoyment increased. Check out her Flickr and Blog.

avenSkye Waverider came to Second Life in April of 2009. She remained a human avatar until early 2010 where she then changed to a furry avatar. Though Raven does not consider herself a furry, she is remains a part of both the human and furry communities. In 2016, she started blogging officially focusing on fashion, furry avatars and community. Hello! My first job on Second Life, was multiple things at once. I was a club host, Rock DJ, club owner and learning photography from the beginning. It’s hard to choose just one I started at because I was always interested in everything. I love sharing music I find that isn’t standard radio plays, I get excited when I find new bands and have a desire to constantly share them. I started a furry club in 2010, as a human avatar, to be able the play for everyone that would listen. The more I would find, the more I would share. It lead to also a Facebook music project as well, sharing even more information about all of the bands found around the world. This was mainly unsigned bands, small label bands and the underrated. Photography was something I’ve always been interested in Real Life, never professionally so naturally it was something I wanted to learn in Second Life. Practice photos were for friends and myself most of the time. I’m still learning and most of it’s now understanding Photoshop better. I love learning, I love photos. It wasn’t until 2016 that I started blogging and with photography, is the most of my time on Second Life. I did start this in about 2012, but dropped it due to real life circumstances. I heavily enjoy that now and will be doing more in the way of community information for both humans and furries. I would love to see them co-exist in a better manner and for furries to see more of what Second Life is about. I find that being a furry avatar, is a fun challenge and I have a shopoholic problem. Sharing these finds is also something I much enjoy. I have not done a DJ set since 2014, real life new job took away that time and since returning to Second Life have only done 2 sets since. One day, I may return to this as I miss my old music project. Check out her Flickr, Blog, Facebook and Furaffinity.

CHELSEA CHAPLYNSKI

helsea Chaplynski first rezzed into the world of Second Life ten years ago last month. A real life friend told her all about this amazing world where you could fly, dress up like Barbie and chat to other people from all over the world. She was just as amazed by this as her friend and once logged for the first time she was very quickly addicted. Shopping has always been her favorite thing to do to pass time in Second Life and dressing up in all the latest fashions. Once mesh was created this all became even more of an addiction, the shopping addiction was real. Chelsea’s favorite clothes creator right now is Miss Chlelsea and she hopes to blog for her one day. These days Chelsea is a photographer/ blogger in Second Life which keeps her up to date with all the fashions and stores. Also she spends time with her family and friends, taking pictures of course! I have really strongly avoided working in Second Life. I have always felt that working in my “time out world” is not something I wanted to approach. Also with my real life situation I could never ensure to be inworld at a certain time to work. After many many years my Second Life came to a halt, losing some close friends. I was lucky enough to make some new ones and they all loved photography. I had plenty of time on my hands now inworld so I figured I would give it a try. I joined Flickr and joined many amazing Second Life groups and started to get creative. I met more and more new friendly faces on Flickr with the same passions I have, started to collaborate photos and had so much fun with it. I began to get messages from creators offering to sponsor me and I blog for them. I couldn’t believe it. Of course I said yes and it has all taken from there. I blog for some amazing creators right now and I am very grateful to work for them. I blog poses, clothes and jewelry and have so much fun doing it. Check out her Flickr.

andarine [mandarine12] was born in 2014. She has a blog called Fashion Look MD.
I first worked in a club as host to the club legend that no longer exists. Now and then, I found a home again in another club. I worked as a manager in one club and a host in another club on Zodiac, but could not keep up the hours. I need to be present, for example, from 21h 30 to 00h 30 (real time). But after a time, I fell victim to fashion and design, developing a need to shop, style, and take pictures. Naturally, I got into blogging and looking for sponsors but that was not easy because I knew nothing about editing pictures. After a lot of research and tutorials, I have improved little by little but I still think I have some gaps in this area. I continue to learn slowly without losing the focus that I must also have fun love what I do. Otherwise there is no reason to continue. No worries, I do not admit defeat and hope to continue improving with photoshop to do my best as a blogger. I hope my sponsors and followers continue to support my work and I think them for their trust and for their kindness and encouragement by commenting on my photos. Check out her Blog, Flickr and Facebook.
