Elora & Rajiv Jonas Peterson Photography

Elora and Rajiv’s incredible 3 day celebration took place on the island of Bali. Both Elora and her father, John Hardy are heavily invested in providing a sustainable future for us. John runs the Green School in Bali and Elora builds houses from bamboo. Photographer Jonas Peterson descibes the celebration as a “green wedding in the true sense of the word”. Day one commenced at dawn as guests were picked up and driven into the rainforest on the back of a truck. They were taken on a hike, then shown how the irrigation system of the rice paddies work. After a refreshing dip in the spring at the back of the Hardy’s residence, the night time saw the first of the ceremonies (an Indian one) take place.

. . . e c i t o n e k Time to ta Award winning Australian design boutique Holloway has a new incubation to announce: recycled timber timepieces! Designed, developed and manufactured in Brisbane, Australia this exclusive handmade series is undoubtedly gratifying. “When we finished the prototype I had trouble leaving that night. It’s an addictive sensory experience, the touch, the smell, the look; everything combined makes you feel instinctively connected to the watch” says Holloways co-founder Martin Gordon Brown. Over 20 different Australian timbers are featured, recycled from old wine barrels, maple classic car interiors, broken skateboards, expired surfboards and busted guitars to name a few. Reused Kangaroo leather, emus foot and to Lea’s horror, cane toad skin bands clasp the pieces convincingly. The crew at Holloway has been working alongside schools, universities, local groups and key ambassadors to re-ignite the Australian made movement. Described by industry peers as ‘the generator of industry stimulation” and “the most promising young environmental enterprise since Patagonia” Holloway are leading a niche collective of confident designermanufacturers taking on the world, ethically and responsibly. A great buy for your groom to be or guys, a great idea as a gift to your groomsmen. Check out Holloways amazing timepieces and eyewear designs at www.hollowayeyewear.

Intimate Secrets

January 2013 sees the release of the latest eco lingerie ‘Honeymoon Collection’ by Madonna Bain eco intimates and we here at Eco Brides are lucky enough to give you the intimate preview. The Honeymoon Collection is the latest range of luxury eco lingerie from Madonna Bain Eco Intimates. This stunning hand crafted line is in a league of its own, fusing fine hemp silks, pleated silk georgettes, soft organic cotton and intricate organic cotton lace with Madonna’s signature intricate details. The capsule collection consists of seven pieces including knickers, bralettes, under wire bodices, french knickers and matching robe.

42

www.ecobrides.com.au

Each piece is inspired by love and named accordingly, making this collection the perfect gift for the bride to be. The stunning shoot for the range was photographed by wedding photographer Kate Belle and the romantic concept was a collaboration between Madonna and Kate.

“We wanted to create the feeling of a brides morning before she is wed.”

www.ecobrides.com.au

Kate is renowned for her soft natural lit photography so it was a perfect partnership to encapture the collection.

Madonna’s intimates are the conscious, modern woman’s answer to what to wear to make yourself feel beautiful inside and out.

Eco lingerie designer Madonna Bain has been creating her name sake label since 2009. Slowly and steadily building and growing her business and her reputation as a designer who hand crafts quality and intricate garments from natural fabrics that have less impact on the environment.

The collection is available made to order from December online from www.madonnabain.com.au and from selected boutiques from January 2013.

Madonna’s ethos may not be obvious but it is strong and interwoven into each and every piece she designs- that ultimate luxury equals feeling good, body, mind and soul about the impact that the item has on the environment and what we put on our bodies. How can we feel good about purchasing an item that is polluting our planet and is full of harmful toxins?

“The new collection is romantic and decadent, not how eco garments have been seen before.”

ten tips for making your wedding photography more eco friendly!

It isn’t the easiest thing to make your wedding photography totally eco friendly - but with these tips, you might at least be able to make it a little bit greener! Moss Green Images, a Brisbane wedding photographer who offers eco friendly products and albums, gives us some tips on how to help green up your wedding photography! 1. Look for a local photographer who won’t need to travel for your wedding - therefore reducing carbon emissions. 2. When searching for a location for your wedding, try to find somewhere that would work for both ceremony, reception AND your wedding photos 3. Find a photographer who emails everything rather than printing it out, e.g. contract, price lists, information etc. 4. Find a photographer with eco friendly products 5. Use a digital photographer 6. When looking at albums, look for a photographer who offers an album with a hemp cover 7. Although USB’s are only slightly more eco friendly than DVD’s....it’s still a small step towards caring for our environment. Look for a photographer who will give you images on a USB. 8. Ask your photographer to do an online gallery to view your proofs, rather than prints. 9. Look for a photographer with minimal packaging or eco friendly packaging. 10. Carbon offset as much as you can!

Rustic Art Blocks are printed onto stone and framed in recycled timber.

Images printed onto recycled aluminium make a dramatic statement! For a more traditional look (but by no means any less gorgeous), get your prints printed onto bamboo paper.

Leading the way in the age old technique of letterpress and combining eco friendly practices and products is the gorgeous Brisbane seaside studio of Bespoke Letterpress. Alischa Herrmann, director, designer and letterpress printer and her team, including dogs Ruby Tuesday and Miss Daisy create unique and inspiring works of stationery art. “We print the old fashioned way, using antique cast iron letterpresses, printing on imported luxuriously thick cotton paper, mixed with patience, perfection and a whole lot of love.” Letterpress printing is the oldest and one of the most exquisite forms of printing available. A true craft of masters which leaves a tactile impression into the paper it is printed on. At Bespoke Letterpress, “we are holding all of this history in our hands, we are its protector, its advocate, and it is our vision to keep this craft alive. Printing letterpress isn’t easy - it is hard physical work, it can be frustrating, and each day always brings new challenges on our antique presses - but we are perfectionists, and we love letterpress with a passion, and could not imagine printing any other way.”

“It is our vision to combine a fusion of antique printing methods with beautiful typography, gorgeous vintage illustrations and beautiful deep impressions into the finest papers. We have an unwavering dedication to our printing techniques and we treasure maintaining this vintage craftsmanship. It is this vision which has made us one of the leading letterpress studios here in Australia, and across the world.” Using rubber and soy based inks as well as 100% cotton rag paper, Bespoke Letterpress take pride in their eco conscious products. “Our letterpress invitations and stationery are printed on 100% cotton stocks which are luxuriously thick, lush, environmentally friendly and perfect for letterpress printing.

54

www.ecobrides.com.au

We like to explain the texture of our papers as a mix of silk, linen and fluffy clouds all combined into one! No other paper matches the soft feel and elegant texture of our beautiful 100% cotton stocks.” Our papers are made from recovered cotton materials from the textile industry which would otherwise end up in landfill. No harmful elemental chlorine is used to make our papers bright and white because Mother Nature has already done the work for us. It is also energy efficient – Cotton requires far less water and chemical processing than do papers made from wood. Likewise the energy usage per tonne of cotton paper is much less than typical wood paper. Our cotton rag papers are available in white or ivory in a 300gsm or 600gsm weight.”

So if eco luxury is what you are looking for with your wedding stationery, head over to Bespoke Letterpress’ website to discover more about this ancient craft.

Indian Ocean words and photography by Cas Doyle

Eco and sustainable practices are spreading across the globe at a frantic pace. One place we never dreamed would have so much to offer in eco tourism was Sri Lanka. on a recent trip to this island, cas and her fiance jimmy discovered for themselves just what sri lanka has to offer by way of eco tourism.

www.ecobrides.com.au

Lanka, Sinhala, Ceylon, why even Steve Irwin referred to the country as the Island of Snakes! While Sri Lanka is known by many different names, it also means about as many different things to different people. Whether it’s a beach, historical ruins, safari, surf, train rides, tea plantations or just straight up amazing FOOD you’re looking for – Sri Lanka has it. Situated in the Indian Ocean, east of the most southern part of India; this country which is approximately the size of Tasmania, is full of surprise and rich in culture and history. The real surprise when visiting this small island nation was that Sri Lanka seems to grasp the idea of sustainable tourism in a way that the rest of Asia (particularly the S-E) could really take a lesson from! Whilst staying in boutique hotels, don’t be surprised if you need to order your dinner by 4pm – that will give the staff enough time to pick the ingredients fresh from the garden, pluck a chicken or buy the fish from a local fisherman! You won’t see this in bigger chain hotels, but you will still see produce grown on site, solar power and rain water tanks salvaging every last drop of rain during monsoon season! Other eco practices worth noting... •

Emission-testing stations are everywhere and are a requirement for vehicle registration.

Coconut husk is as a fuel commonly used to cook and heat homes (it can get cold in the mountains).

In fact hydropower and thermal heat provide 45% of power to Sri Lanka with photovoltaic and wind energy emerging.

Also some of the best accommodation options in Sri Lanka

a boutique B&B like Pedlar 62 or Frangipani will only set you back about $35 AUD/night. Spend your days blissed out on the beach at Mirissa.

A safari. Unexpectedly the National Parks are filled with amazing wildlife including elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, a huge array of tropical birds and leopards!!!!!

Explore the tea plantations by day and stay a night at View Point Villa’s and take a cooking lesson from Isuru!

Get out of the restaurants and follow the locals to where they eat. Amazing, hot, tasty curry awaits you. Follow it up with a cup of Sri Lankan milk tea for the complete experience!

Garden Wedding Posy words by Merci Bouquet | photography by Pretty Picnics garden location Camden Community Gardens

Many times I’ve had to walk through nature (often barefoot!) to find inspiration and put something last minute together. If you are inspired by nature it is easy to wander through with a basket and pick flowers, herbs, nuts, berries and foliage of different textures and colours and also at different stages of their life. This style of posy is perfect for the novice as it is very loose and casual. There is little pressure that you will ‘mess it up’ as it is meant to be messy and natural. For this design you will need a pair of garden scissors, twine and a small amount of hessian, easy!

1

After my initial walk around the gardens viewing what was available, I decided on creating a bouquet with yellow as the base colour. I was inspired by the big yellow open roses - I had to use them!

4

5

I work in a circle around and around the centre of mint and roses, except for where the trailing peppercorn is. All stems go in the one direction, spiralling around, this helps to give the bouquet an open loose feel.

84

www.ecobrides.com.au

Once I am happy with what I’ve created it’s time to tie off the bouquet with twine. Wrap the twine around a few times and tie it off tightly. You can snip the stems for a neater look or leave them as is.

2

I lay all my flowers out in their groups so I can see exactly what I’m working with and then clean all the stems from leaves and take off anything that is unsightly.

6

I’ve decided to use hessian to create the handle and I again use twine wrapped around a few times to fix the hessian. I’ve continued the theme of the garden bouquet with the handle. Try to personalise your flowers as much as you do other aspects of your wedding.

3

I start with the long trailing peppercorn foliage and build upon that with mint and roses. I’ve decided to roughly group my flowers together rather than mix them up in their placement. There is enough happening with texture and colour that grouping will help minimise the ‘busyness’

7

And here it is a beautiful sunny garden bouquet perfect for a natural eco wedding.

It’s Only Fair With a background in fashion and textile design and a passion to provide fair trade, sustainable employment for the hundreds of unemployed traditional silk weavers in Cambodia, the directors of Lillypilly Silk Boutique, Dianne and Peter Tatham, have designed modern, sustainable silk products that incorporate and showcase the hand-woven, lustrous, fine silks and Ikats, traditional to Cambodia. “We visited a local village in the Takeo Province, where highly skilled traditional silk weavers, with a history of over 1000 years of silk weaving, were being threatened with having to weave together plastic bags to try and sell to earn a pitiful income. The poverty these women were facing was so bad.” With the plight of these women firmly in their minds they came up with the ‘controversial’ idea to mix silk and FEET....”And after some education from our silk weavers, we discovered that silk is an incredibly durable and easy care fabric and can be cared for much like human hair, just by washing gently in shampoo and cool water.” Enter their versatile silk ribbon sandals design, featuring the glowing interchangeable silk ribbon ties. With the ingenious design of interchangeable ribbons, you have a new pair of shoes. Economical, pretty, creative and fun!

Win!

Lillipilly Silk Boutique are giving one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of ribbon silk sandals, a silk flower and clutch valued at $135!

86

www.ecobrides.com.au

“Our soles are handmade in natural, genuine leather by a fair trade shoe-smith in Phnom Penh. Our handbags, clutches and silk flower accessories are assembled by a fair trade sewing organisation in Cambodia, which helps women out of poverty and into sustainable employment.” At Lillypilly Silk, we think our ribbon sandals are the PERFECT sandals for both brides and bridesmaids, they are so comfortable, versatile in colour options and are able to be worn again and again after the wedding day! Simply changing the ribbons creates a brand new pair of sandals! Our sandals pack amazingly well and are very light, which makes them perfect for honeymoon travel... Just take a few sets of extra ribbons and you have multiple pairs of sandals, ready to go! We know that some of our readers are thinking, “what about the production of silk?” Lillypilly Silk had this to say “The very best quality of silk comes from the whole cocoon. It is reeled from the cocoon as one continuous length of silk. It may measure up to 400 metres long. The outside of the cocoon is the “coarser” type whilst the finest silk is located towards the middle of the cocoon. The silk worm that remains is an excellent source of protein for villagers (themselves or their livestock) that may be extremely poor. Some of our products do use the coarser ‘peace’ silk as a feature but mostly the silk weavers use the longest fibre, finer quality silk.

Organic is best We all know organic food is better for us but have your thought about your wine?Tamburlaine organic wines in the Hunter Valley are world renowned for their quality organic vino. When it comes to certified organic wine is it the same as buying organic food? The answer is yes! Just make sure you are buying a truly certified organic wine like Tamburlaine organic wines which has the ACO certified organic logo on its bottles (so you know its authentic). This means the grapes are grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Organic wine also uses a quarter of the preservative sulphur dioxide of conventional wine and they are less likely to give you a headache! As no chemical pesticides are used in organic wine there are no toxic chemical residues in your glass. Instead the wines are pure and best represent the ‘terrior’ or region from where they are grown. Along with protecting your health, organic wine cares for the environment as no chemical run-off pollutes the water and the air stays clean. It’s also great to know that organic wine isn’t any more expensive than non-organic wine and is of top quality. Tamburlaine is great proof of that as wine critic James Halliday has given it a ‘red’ five star rating for consistently producing good quality wine. anita and chris

After a surprise proposal in New Zealand, where Chris presented his wife to be with a radiant cut diamond, this gorgeous couple then went on to design the engagement ring together. Their wedding took place on 3rd March 2012, at St Leonards Winery at Wahgunyah. Anita and Chris sourced as many local products as possible for their rustic, yet elegant, wedding. The boxes for the table displays were handmade by a friend using recycled timber, and suited the gorgeous old buildings perfectly. Unfortunately, due to a crazy flood, the outdoor ceremony couldn’t go ahead....but the ceremony in the barrel room was romantic and intimate, with tealight candles and fairy lights creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

With a love story 9.5 years long and covering 2 continents, Erin and Noah have chosen the gorgeous Blue Mountains as their home. After a mutual proposal, they decided on a laid back wedding, with a vintage feel. Erin and Noah found the perfect location, however it was a private property...so Erin sweet talked the owner into letting them have their wedding there! With lots of talented friends and family to help, a few “crafternoons with the wedding party, and lots and lots of thrift shopping, their vision came to life. Much of their wedding was aimed around re-using and recycling - from the crockery to the upcycled cushions to their gift to guests - little tomato seeds for them to take home and grow.
