o, this issue isn’t devoted to Fido. What it is devoted to is everything that makes Summer more beautiful fun and enjoyable. In the pages of this issue you will find landscaping tips for easy care flower bed options. A wonderful BBQ recipe to enjoy with friends. Welcoming DIY inexpensive wreath ideas, great summer fashion and much, much more... Also we are proud to announce the Community Seeds Foundation which is a non-profit charitable fund concentrated on donating and giving back to Butte, Glenn, and Tehama counties. 1% of all profits from the Eco Community Seeds magazine will be going directly to the foundation in order to support and better our local communities. The foundation supports local rescued farm animals including sheep, pigs, cattle, and chickens. It helps keep family farmers in the area on their land by promoting food from their farms and helping their farms thrive. We will also donate to feeding the hungry through member food banks and engaging the community in the fight to end hunger. The foundation will also help provide hairpieces to local financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss of any diagnosis. As well as supporting Natural Abundance Programs such as donating hair and money to create buoys to soak up oil spills in the ocean.

Editor-in-Chief Publisher

The profits will also go to assisting animals in areas of conflict and disaster and protecting animals that are in risk. It supports rescued abandoned domestic cats within the greater Chico urban area. Lastly, the foundation will give to the practice of healing massage therapy that tailors to the specific needs of their clients. As always we are always moving and shaking around here and we are always working on ways that we can contribute to the community. Thank you for your support and stay tuned for more exciting things to come. Cheers!

Easy Being Greener

Summer is for Flowering Perennials By Ken Hodge

hat can be done for yards in the summertime to beautify, make more enjoyable and relaxing? Plant some flowering perennials! Unlike annuals that die in the first frost of the fall, perennials live for three years and sometimes even longer. lowering perennials can flower just as long a season as annual flowers. An example of this is the Perennial Verbena, it flowers for nine months of the year. The best feature about perennials is that unlike annuals, perennials don’t need to be replanted every year. The variety of flower colors, textures and shapes are much greater with perennials, as well.

F

S

ome perennials bloom best in the spring and summer, while others bloom better in the summer and fall. By planting a variety of perennials, a garden can have flower color almost year-round. Perennials naturalize in the flower beds and come back year after year to enjoy. No need to reestablish every spring.

stablishing a flower bed full of annuals requires more watering and fertilizing care then perennials, so it makes sense environmentally to plant perennials. Continuous fertilization creates nitrate runoffs into our waterways and water table compromising the water we eventually drink. It is also important to note that when caring for perennials there is no need to till up and denude the soil for flower

I have to say that perennials are also much better at attracting native flying insects, such as the native Blue Mason Bee that pollinates better than work well together. but a garden filled with mostly perennials will be easier to garden from year to year. And few plants attract Hummingbirds better than the Pink or Red Perennial Salvias. here is no end to the types and varieties of perennials available. Medicinal Plants You Should Know

he traditional storage of ethnobotanical knowledge in memory and practices has a long history and must go back to the beginning of human existence. Likewise, ethnobotany is of great age in India, where it has been described in several ancient literatures. One of the most important sources is the Rig Veda (1200-900 BC), which has been useful in the attempt to identify the source of the traditional medicine system, also known as ‘Ayurveda’. Application of such herbal remedies has also been mentioned in the Atharva Veda (around 3,000 to 2,000 BC). It was in the 19th century when scientists started focusing on the active components found in herbs that gave a way to the research on molecular level. Herbs like Caraway, Cardamom, Turmeric, Aniseed, Clove, Cumin seeds, Basil, Ginger etc. are a few among the gigantic range of culinary herbs. The wild plants have been providing an important source of medicine and food since time immemorial. 26 Community Seeds . Summer 2013

Onion juice rubbed into the skin is said to promote hair growth, and works as a remedy for baldness. It is also used in cosmetic for the treatment of freckles.

Apply the juice 3-4 times a day on warts or wounds. It will heal the wound like anything. A syrup of 1 teaspoonful raw Onion juice with 1 teaspoonful of honey kept over 3 to 4 hours serves as an excellent cough syrup. Movie Review “Chasing Ice” By Sydney Oliver

“Chasing Ice” is a breathtaking film that documents environmental

photographer James Balog’s mission of capturing visual evidence of our changing planet. The documentary has won over 30 awards at film festivals all over the world, including the “Excellence in Cinematography Award” at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. “Chasing Ice” is also a documentary by the producer Jeff Orlowski who produced Academy Award winning film “The Cove”. This film was first screened in theaters in November 2012 and has made such an impact that it was screened at the White House on Earth Day this year. “Chasing Ice” begins in the spring of 2015 as James Balog sets out to the Arctic on an assignment for National Geographic to capture pictures of Earth’s changing climate. This trip opened his eyes to the severity of the issue and sparked a passion to portray evidence that our planet is in danger but also delivers hope that we can do something about it. James and his team install several cameras that are timed to take multiple images throughout the year in order to capture the depletion of the glaciers. The documentary is filled with stunning videos and beautiful images that have never been captured on film until now. “Chasing Ice” is now available on iTunes and Netflix and should definitely be added to your summer movie list!

DIY Yarn Wreaths By Sydney Oliver

DIY Yarn Wreaths

M

y inspiration for this craft came from one of my favorite websites, Pinterest. This website is an amazing way to gather ideas for any project, hobby, or passion you have, from recipes and health and fitness to wedding ideas and fashion tips. I can spend hours and hours browsing through the millions of pins that people have posted, it’s dangerous! I came across this craft when I was looking for ways to spruce up my new house for summer. I thought that these wreaths looked simple and were out of the ordinary so I wanted to share it with all of you! Not only do these wreaths look fabulous traditionally on the outside of your front door, they look just as amazing inside and can be designed to accent any room or season!

Materials Needed: • Foam floral wreath • Mod Podge • Paint Brush (I used a foam one) • Hot glue gun (and glue!) • Flowers (your choice of color) • Yarn (again, your choice) • Scissors

When you are done it should look like this!

Step 2:Allow for your mod podge to dry for 5 minutes, this will allow you to plug in your hot glue gun and wait for it to get hot. As you are waiting, take your flowers and start taking them off of the stems. I found my flowers at Michaels in the clearance section so they were extremely inexpensive! When you have all your flowers in a pile, you can begin gluing them to your wreath. I didn’t plan out where they were going to be placed, I just sporadically applied them. It looks best if you overlap them!

Tools & Steps Needed

Step 3: I chose to choose two different types of

Step 1:

Take your yarn and cut about a foot of it in length. This makes it easier to wrap around, trust me, I learned the hard way! Then apply a couple inches of mod podge on the foam wreath and begin to wrap the yarn around. Continue to cut the yarn in 12 inch increments and wrap around the wreath until you wish to switch the color of yarn. I wrapped my colors about 4 inches in length.

flowers so that I could add a couple flowers on top of my base of white flowers. So if you would like you could always stop at Step 2, or instead of adding another color of flowers you could add your house numbers or even your last name! Be creative!

Crafts are all about thinking outside the box and adding your own personal touch. Have fun!
