GREAT YEAR 2012/13 SUPPORTERS REPORT

CAUSE AND EFFECT
“From this program, my daughter has called me her best friend. This means a lot because our whole family has been through so much and she in particular has been through some stuff that no 15-year-old should have to go through. My daughter has grown as a person and this has allowed her to be more open about what she wants and the direction she wants to go in life.” Father, Salisbury High School Graduate 2013

average community value of our training is an $8 community return for every $1 invested. In this past year alone, that investment made by the participating schools and supported strongly by our generous donors has delivered a community impact of $7.2 million. We are very fortunate to partner with schools that are passionate and dedicated to develop the ‘soft skills’ in their students. Six schools participated in a University of Adelaide research project to assess the gains by students in areas such as engagement, relationships, positive emotion and accomplishment from their participation in

Most importantly, we have a small and dedicated team of trainers, fundraisers and support staff who work tirelessly for our cause. Their skilled efforts and passion generate the outstanding feedback we receive from graduates, parents and schools and we appreciate this immensely. The next year promises many positive developments and we look forward to our supporters continuing to be moved to support the life changing work of our team.
our program. We look forward to the results in late 2013 and we anticipate further research partnerships to track and evaluate the effectiveness of our work with Year 10 students and into their futures. Our success in regional communities has involved developing community-based trainers who provide a wonderful connection in their community and give us the capacity to serve larger numbers of young people. Strong results in regional areas are a testament to the belief of the school leadership teams and the community business leaders who share this vision and have readily promoted Youth Opportunities in their communities, especially Port Augusta and Whyalla, to raise additional funding. Strong and consistent financial supporters are vital to our work and we wish to recognise particularly the significant and sustained contributions of board members Melanie Champion de Crespigny and Graham Hobbs.

SUPPORTER PROFILE LIVING CHOICE
The partnership between Living Choice and Youth Opportunities echoes a number of themes linked to the Living Choice philosophy, to provide clients with the best possible chance of leading a fulfilling lifestyle. “After attending a graduation ceremony, I realised that the program had an impact on many people, not just the students’’ said Graham Hobbs, co-director of Living Choice. This incredible relationship has resulted in Graham and Pam Hobbs personally donating in excess of $1.4 million towards the organisation
and in 2013, alongside his business partner Ian Tregoning, Living Choice has contributed $100,000. “For our company, it’s not just about corporate profit, we have a responsibility to give something back to the community. Sponsorship in the direction of Youth Opportunities is a great investment, it can change communities and it can change lives. By supporting Youth Opportunities we believe we are positively contributing to the success and growth of our state by developing our future leaders” said Graham. WHY
OUR PROGRAM IS NEEDED
Young people in South Australia face an increasing number of challenges as they transition into adulthood. These challenges if not addressed often lead to disengagement from school, a negative self image and the potential to fall into a cycle of disadvantage.
(and where it’s delivered) Vulnerable young people often have weak family support, suffer emotional or physical abuse, and see little positive in their futures. 60 hours of our Personal Leadership Training changes lives. It gives young people an alternative path to avoid or overcome seriously negative impacts like bullying, depression, alcohol and substance abuse, and not completing their school education.

We work in schools with higher levels of social and economic disadvantage, giving their young people the opportunity to believe in themselves. In 2012/13 we celebrated working 10 or more years with five secondary schools: Craigmore, Le Fevre, Salisbury, Seaford and Woodville.
