A small saving grace helped out Amy Buckley, junior in animal sciences and industry, when she did not have enough money to pay for her textbooks in the K-State Campus Store.

On Jan. 17, Sharon Buckley, Amy's mother, sent an email to

Pat Bosco, vice president for student life, and the K-State Alumni Association, sharing Amy's story.

Amy got to the register in the Campus Store after waiting in line, and when she swiped her debit card, she realized that she was $194 short for buying her textbooks.

"When I discovered that I didn't have enough money to pay for my books, I was frustrated,"

Amy said. "It's just that I forgot to check my debit balance."

Amy said she was going to tell the cashier to take the books off of her purchase when the student at the cash register next to her paid for her books with a check. The other student refused to give his name.

"I was really grateful to him and profusely thanked him," Amy said. "This encounter has reaffirmed my feelings for K-State. The people here are good to each other and are one big purple family."

Bosco said this is another "great example of family," and he would "bet there are other unsung heroes" that go out of their way to "make K-State a very unique place to learn, live and grow."

Sharon said in her email she is "so glad Amy decided to become a Wildcat".

Amy said she would like to say thank you again to the student.

"You could've just left, but you stayed and helped me, and that was really thoughtful of you," Amy said. "If I could, I would like to repay you in some way."

On the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1968 speech at Ahearn Field House, four individuals who were present at the historic speech shared their experiences and answered questions from an audience Friday as part of "I Was There" — a panel hosted by the K-State Alumni Association and K-State Libraries.

Cliff Hight, university archivist and associate professor for Hale Library, said he hoped the event would enable the community “to renew our commitment to building the inclusive world” King had dreamed of in his “The Future of Integration" speech.

“We feel that it is incredibly appropriate to have people who attended that speech to be her to reflect on that,” Hight said.

The panelists included Sue Maes, former dean emeritus of the K-State Global Campus who, at the time of King's speech, was a junior; Billy Hill, who attended the speech and met King afterward at the age of 13; Sylvia Robinson, chairelect for the K-State Alumni Association Board of Directors and Bill Worley, K-State student body president for the academic year of 1967-68. They were among the over 7,000 students, faculty and community members who attended the 1968 speech.

"I was just inundated by his persona and what he had to share with us," Hill said. "I was

holding onto every word that he was speaking, and I was just mesmerized by everything that he said."

Robinson, who was a freshman studying education in 1968, said she had “mixed emotions” and was wary of accepting his plans for peaceful change because she didn’t “know if the non-violent way would get us to where we needed to be.”

“The things that he was talking about started making a lot of sense," Robinson said.

“I left there feeling inspired and ready to get to work on the things that we had identified as students on campus.”

A Place to Call Home How to furnish your home on a student’s budget RACHEL HOGAN THE COLLEGIAN

"The dorm life" isn't for everyone. It's hard. Sharing a room can be a pain, no matter how close you are to your roommate. Community showers and bathrooms are disgusting. Worst of all (for me), it never feels like home.

After living in Wefald Hall for my first two semesters, I decided to live off campus. One of the most exciting and difficult aspects of moving into a house off campus was coming up with its furnishings.

Go to any furniture store, online or otherwise, and look up the price of the cheapest sofa. It's probably at least $300. You know what $300 can pay for? Almost a whole semester's worth of privilege fees, hundreds of meals, numerous gallons of gas or a couple textbooks.

But you don't have to break the bank to furnish your house or apartment. Here are a few tips my roommates and I used to hunt down furniture and decor for our space.

Other people are looking for the same deals on the same items. Act fast when you see a deal.

Also, spread out your purchases if you can. You don't have to buy everything at once. It took my roommates and I almost six months to furnish our house.

Men’s basketball on win streak, faces Baylor tonight DEAUNDRA ALLEN JARRETT WHITSON THE COLLEGIAN

For the first time since February 2015, the Kansas State men’s basketball team has won back-to-back top25 wins at home.

After K-State won against the University of Oklahoma on Tuesday, they didn’t let up one bit when Texas Christian University rolled into town on Saturday. The game was a mixed bag of highs and lows, but mainly showed the power of the K-State offense as they beat another ranked team.

As K-State shot 52.9 percent from the field, they were able to show strong leadership and work ethic.

Many people underestimated the Wildcats, but through the past couple of games, it might not be the case anymore. TCU only shot 42.9 percent from the field, a whole 10 percent less than the Wildcats.

It was a rollercoaster of a day for the Horned Frogs. Head coach Jamie Dixon received a technical early in the game, and later was ejected from the game, where he claims he had no explanation of why he was. Shortly after Dixon was ejected, associate head coach David Patrick stepped up to finish the game, where the Horned Frogs scrambled. It was obvious TCU was flustered, as they called plays with low percentage of actually working.

It was a big day for the Wildcats, both offensively and defensively. Junior Dean Wade led the Wildcats with

20 points, while juniors Makol Mawien and Barry Brown followed with 18 and 15 points.

Wade stepped up for the Wildcats and shined in the post-game press conference multiple times. Brown praised Wade’s performance.

“He has been playing awesome,” Brown said. “There is nothing he cannot do. He is not getting outside of himself. He just has that confidence that I have been telling him to have since my freshman year. I see things that he has been doing now that he could have been doing his freshman year. Maybe now it is just clicking for him, but I love the confidence and the shots he is taking. I love it all. He is playing his game and we are winning games."

Head coach Bruce Weber also talked about the team’s focus and how they have impacted the overall progress.

“We talked about staying focused on the game,” Weber said. “I got a lot of emotion after the Kansas game, and I think all of our kids did but we came back and we just really focused.

We kept talking about how we had to get prepared for Oklahoma. We started talking about how we were going to beat them, how we were going to stop them, what we were going to do, and they bought into it. That was my big message."

K-State will travel to Waco, Texas, tonight to face the Baylor Bears.

It will be the first time the two teams have met during the 2017-18 season.

The Wildcats last visited Waco in February 2017. The Bears were ranked second in the nation at the time, and the Wildcats barely pre-

vailed over Baylor, 56-54.

No. 4 Baylor too much for women's basketball, K-State falls 75-50 BRETT ENGLE

The No. 4 ranked Baylor Bears were too much for the Kansas State women’s basketball team to handle Saturday, beating the Wildcats 75-50.

This loss dropped the Wildcats’ overall record to 11-8 this season, and 3-5 in Big 12 conference play. Meanwhile, Baylor improved to 17-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference.

K-State’s shooting was ice

cold. The Wildcats were 20-64 from the field, or 31.7 percent.

That includes a final count of 6 of 25 from behind the arc.

The first half of the game was brutal for K-State, with the Wildcats only scoring 18 points in the entire half compared to Baylor’s 34. The Bears’ lead began to slip in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough, with the Bears still outscoring the Wildcats 24-18 that quarter.

Junior Kalani Brown led the way for Baylor, scoring 33 points and also grabbing

19 rebounds en route to her double-double.

Sophomore Lauren Cox also recorded a double-double for Baylor with 16 points and 19 rebounds.

Junior guard Kayla Goth led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points. She also recorded five assists, leading the team.

The Wildcats will return to Bramlage Coliseum for a battle with the TCU Horned Frogs, K-State head coach Jeff Mittie’s former team, on Wednesday. That game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.

Earlier that season when the two clashed in Manhattan, K-State fell to Baylor 77-68 in January 2017.

The two teams would meet again in March 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri, for a Big 12 Tournament game.

The Wildcats triumphed

over the Bears for the second straight time, 70-64. Baylor was ranked ninth in the country at the time, and the win was attributed by many as the cause for K-State’s bid into the NCAA Tournament.

OPINION: Tutoring has an unfair stigma among college students JASON DEFISHER THE COLLEGIAN

For many students, the transition from high school to college is a rather large one, and part of this transition may include experiencing large lectures for the first time.

Some students take to this change rather well, while others

struggle with this new learning environment. Although many resources are available to help students with their academics, some students shy away from resources such as tutoring due to a perceived negative stigma.

The biggest cause of tutoring’s bad reputation is that tutoring in high school is relatively uncommon, typically reserved for students who are majorly

struggling. This perception that tutoring is a service exclusively for students who are failing classes often carries over from high school to college, causing students who may need tutoring to refuse help.

The reality of college tutoring is that many students receive additional help in their classes, even if they aren’t in danger of failing.

Other myths about tutoring include fears that the sessions might be boring, or that you won’t be able to ask questions in a group setting. As someone who has both received and offered tutoring services, I can attest to the fact that tutoring is surprisingly fun.

The tutors employed by Holtz Hall have all taken the classes they tutor and understand

the struggles that come with different professors and material.

As mentioned before, another concern regarding tutoring is that a group tutoring session may leave many students’ questions unanswered. While a 50-minute session may not be sufficient to answer all questions that students may have, the tutors who have helped me in the past (and my current co-workers) have been

extremely helpful outside of tutoring hours.

Many tutors are willing to meet with students outside of scheduled times, as well as answer any questions sent via electronic communication.
