Editor's note: This story is part of the Purple Threads series, which aims to tell the stories of Kansas State students who, despite their different experiences, are all connected in some way through the K-State.

On a sunny Thursday morning, Brian Mota sat quietly in a booth at Radina’s. While timid at first, Mota is anything but insecure. He’s confident in his identity: Mota is a junior, the eldest of six children, bilingual and a first generation student studying marketing at Kansas State.

“My parents are from Mexico [and] they didn’t really get any education,” Mota said.

“My mom stopped right after elementary school — she kind of just stopped to take care of her parents. And then my dad — he finished high school, but instead of going to college, he decided to come over to the United States, and he brought my mom with him.”

Mota said when it came time for him to decide on college, he had to figure out his path on his own. He said his experience was like “using a map to explore all his options.”

“I didn’t know I was going to come to K-State,” Mota said.

“I was still exploring my options and I knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t know if I was going to be able to due to my resources and lack of information.”

But his exploration was cut short when his mother gave birth to his younger twin sisters prematurely and his parents needed to remain in the hospital for a couple months. Mota said he spent that time taking care of his siblings and didn’t take much action on any acceptance letters he received.

“Eventually on the last day my dad called [and said], ‘We’re coming back home,’ and that was good to hear because they were always in the hospital — I never saw them for that whole month [and] I was kind of taking care of my other siblings,” Mota

said. “Then I got another call … and it’s actually Rebeca Paz.” Paz is the assistant director in the office of first generation students at K-State. Mota said Paz talked with him regarding the First Scholars opportunity at K-State. The First Scholars program helps first generation students by providing opportunities and guidance. Mota, though excited, said the entire process was still confusing for him and his parents.

Mota is not alone in facing the obstacles — Lauren Ewing, senior in mathematics, is also a first generation student involved in First Scholars who shares similar struggles.

Ewing grew up in Arizona.

Her mother gained her associates degree after becoming pregnant with her older sister, and her father never finished high school.

Ewing said her life in Arizona was rough — that people often told her she wouldn’t go very far in life. She was told that she was meant simply to raise a family and not to do much else.

But despite the toll it took on her, Ewing persisted.

“Education has always been really, really important to me because it’s like the one place that like nothing like bad happens — you just kind of forget about your worries, you forget about the outside world when you’re in school; you’re there for school, and nothing else is going on,” Ewing said. “So, it’s kind of always been this little haven for me to go to school.”

Ewing had two final choices to decide between: Fort Hays State University and K-State.

After visiting K-State’s campus, Ewing made her decision.

“I got to K-State and I was just like, ‘Wow, I love it here,’” Ewing said. “It just felt right — it just felt like home to me, and everyone I interacted with was just so kind. I know that we really push family a lot here at K-State, and it may seem a little cheesy or like cliché to a lot of people, but I truly believe in that.”

First Scholars program helps students navigate college life “It sucks because you feel really alone, even though you’re surrounded by a lot of people,” Ewing said. “I think that’s why I’m so prideful in the whole family aspect here — because we’ve carried each other through the past four years.”

A lot of first generation students had to take care of their families, grow up at a young age and learn to be independent faster than others, Ewing said.

“I think that being first generation just sort of means that you’re used to putting other people before yourself, and then when you’re in college you have to put yourself first,” she said.

THE STRENGTH

“The same thing happened to my older sister that happened to my mom — she was going to work on her college degree, but then she got pregnant, and now she’s raising a family and she has a career and everything like that, so she’s not too upset about it,” she said.

Her sister does desire to go back and get a college education, Ewing said, and her younger sister has started her own path to nursing school. But as it stands, Ewing is the first person in her family in a long time to attend college. She described her parents’ reaction as slightly timid, yet encouraged and excited.

“It was really cool because they were just very supportive of my decision,” she said. “They haven’t always been like super supportive of like my major choice, per se, because in their heads you go to college to get a degree that’ll pay a lot of money.”

Ewing came to K-State as an education major, intending

to become a high school math teacher, but ended up dropping her education major and becoming a full-time math student.

“They had it in their brains I was going to be like an engineer and that I was going to go do all these things because I pondered it, I thought about being aerospace engineering I thought about going into actuarial sciences — I thought about all those other things,” Ewing said.

Circumstances led her down a different path. A supervisor encouraged Ewing to explore ideas related to helping others.

“He kind of showed me the importance of just kind of dealing with people and being OK with past experiences and using those to sort of help others pursue their goals,” she said. “And so that’s what got me into the RA position, and the RA position is what got me into higher education.”

THE STRUGGLE

First generation students continue to learn even after

application season. Mota said though he was researching, he didn’t even know what a student union was.

“I was kind of lost so I was exploring everywhere,” Mota said. “The first time I ever came here was during orientation and enrollment. I was literally confused by how college worked.”

When Ewing was questioned on the obstacles she had to overcome, she laughed.

“Absolutely everything,” she said. “It’s like its own realm of experiences just because your parents can’t help you with anything. I would call my mom and I’d be freaking out about something — it would be a number of different things, and she’d be like, ‘Well, you should go talk to someone about that,’ and I was like, ‘Well, no kidding.’”

Ewing said it was frustrating because her parents were unable to help her with some of the experiences she was going through as a first generation college student.

The power is in the unity — both Ewing and Mota said their support system at K-State helped them through many of the struggles they’ve endured.

“When I first got here, I was in a cohort with 20 other peers, and that’s one word [resilience] you can describe our whole cohort as,” Mota said. “We all had setbacks we were all trying to figure out what we wanted to be — we all got together and had that conversation and then we all told our personal stories and saw how hard we worked to be in that room.”

Ewing said there are many things other students don’t think about that can be obstacles for first generation students. To overcome some of those obstacles, those students involved in First Scholars would often take classes together, attend sessions about financial aid and learn about other opportunities they had available.

“First Scholars is completely comprised of students, and we have definitely helped each other through this whole thing because we all are going through the same thing where none of our parents have gone to college so no one really knows how to navigate anything,” Ewing said.

The Wildcats are coming

off a four-point loss to the Horned Frogs on Saturday and look to get back on track with a win against the Red Raiders.

The women’s basketball team (9-10, 3-5 Big 12) will begin the week in Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech on Wednesday. This game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.

They will end the week at 2 p.m. Saturday as they host the Baylor Bears.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

K-State ended a losing drought against Oklahoma on Wednesday and then lost to West Virginia on Satur-

day. They shot the ball well against Oklahoma, but not against West Virginia.

The big match-up: men’s basketball (9-12, 2-6 Big 12) will begin the week by hosting the No. 1 ranked Baylor Bears at 8 p.m. Monday on ESPN2.

The Wildcats will end the week in Ames, Iowa, Saturday against the Iowa State Cyclones at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

The tennis team (2-2) will be in Tuscon, Arizona, on Saturday to compete against the North Texas Mean Green. The match will begin at 8 p.m.

The Wildcats upset the Mountaineers earlier this season in Manhattan, but the meeting on the road belonged to West Virginia.

It was a close, contested game up until there were 13 minutes remaining in the game when the Mountaineers extended their lead, not relinquishing less than an eight point advantage.

It was that late game domination that secured a 66-57 victory at the expense of Kansas State.

For the first part of the game, it was an even match.

The Wildcats held a lead with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half 1615, sealed by a jumper from

junior guard Mike McGuirl.

The lead quickly faded as the Mountaineers regained their momentum on the following possession.

West Virginia extended the lead to 25-16, their largest lead of the first half at 5:26.

K-State fought back and shortened the Mountaineers' lead to 27-30.

The Wildcats then clawed the lead to 30-29 to open the second half with two free throws from senior forward Xavier Sneed.

The Mountaineers got their largest lead of the game, 49-35, with nine minutes remaining in the second half. They would go on to control the game from there, cruising to even the season series with the Wildcats.

Sophomore forward Derek Culver led the Mountaineers in 35 minutes of play and 19 points. Culver was a big part of West Virginia's win against K-State on Saturday.

The Mountaineers were able to take advantage of 14 turnovers by the Wildcats by scoring 14 points off those turnovers. The Mountaineers relied heavily on non-starters with 31 of their points coming off the bench.

Junior guard David Sloan led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points and Sneed followed with 11 points.

K-State will next host No.1 Baylor in Bramlage Coliseum on Monday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.

SPORTS PREVIEW Men’s basketball hosts No. 1 Baylor for a prime-time game ADAM MEYER

The men’s basketball team will have an opportunity to pull off an upset on the No. 1 team in the country as they host the Baylor Bears on Monday.

The Bears have been red hot this season, and they come into this game with a 18-1, 8-0 Big 12 record, winning 18 consecutive games. Their one loss this season came from the Washington Huskies in their second game this season.

They recently just defeated the TCU Horned Frogs 6852 on Saturday.

Kansas State (9-12, 2-6 Big 12) was recently defeated

by No. 12 West Virginia 66-57.

The Wildcats have had one upset victory at home this season as they defeated West Virginia on Jan. 18, 84-68.

K-State did not shoot the ball well against the Mountaineers on Saturday, shooting 36.7 percent from the field.

They will need to rebound from that shooting performance and shoot the ball well Monday night if they are going to pull off the upset against the Bears in Manhattan.

The Wildcats will need a big game from senior forward Xavier Sneed, who has been the team’s leading scorer this

season, scoring 14.4 points per game.

Sneed has had some big games this season, but has also been silent in games as well.

He has a chance to prove himself as an elite senior on the big stage of ESPN against the Bears.

Freshman guard DaJuan Gordon also has a chance to continue to show his leadership and strong playing ability in this game. He has certainly shown his play-making ability this season, coming out of the freshman shadow.

Junior guard David Sloan has also made a big impact on the team this season. Sloan has done well contributing to the

team since he joined the starting lineup. He recently scored 13 points against the Mountaineers on Saturday.

When the Wildcats upset the Mountaineers on Jan. 18, they shot the ball very well — at 59.2 percent. K-State held West Virginia to 44.2 percent from the field.

That is the type of shooting performance the Wildcats will need Monday night if they are going to pull off the upset and give the Bears their first loss of the Big 12 season.

This game will have national spotlight as it will be played on ESPN2 and is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. on Monday night.

At KSUnite on Nov. 6, Polina Nations, senior in social work, was one of several students who shared their experiences with the crowd. Nations spoke on sexual violence, a topic she said she is an open book about.

As a high school student, Nations was assaulted by her then-boyfriend.

“It was something that was really challenging for me to overcome,” Nations said. “I had so many mixed emotions with my own personal experience and my own personal journey to healing and growth.”

Nations didn’t speak out about her experience for four to six months, which she said is not uncommon for survivors. They take their time to get comfortable

with sharing it. When she did speak out, she told a teacher she had a trusting relationship with.

“There’s a lot of victim blaming culturally,” Nations said. “There’s a lot of embarrassment and shame that comes along with being a victim or survivor of sexual violence.”

MYTHS AND TRUTHS Jessica Henault, sexual and relationship violence prevention specialist for the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education, said sexual violence is not limited to male-on-female violence. It varies based on gender, sexual orientation and social status.

“National data shows that one in four cisgender women, one in 16 cisgender men and then one in four transgender

individuals will be affected by sexual violence at some point throughout their college experience,” Henault said. “In 73 percent of those assaults, the victim/survivor knows their perpetrator, so it’s committed by a non-stranger.”

Henault adds that it is a common myth that sexual assaults are committed by strangers.

Rachel Levitt, assistant professor of gender, women and sexuality studies, said this myth stems from trust: People know their siblings, their family members, their friends and defend them by saying, “They wouldn’t do that.”

Levitt said media representations in TV shows, movies and books contribute to the myth.

Advocates give options, share statistics about sexual violence shows data from 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2018, 7 rapes were reported in Manhattan: two on-campus and five off-campus.

In addition, there were 2 reports of fondling on campus, three reports of domestic violence on-campus and one off-campus and four reports of dating violence on-campus.

“It’s kind of amazing to see ... the challenge that KSU sees its responsibility in relation to what happens if someone is sexually assault off campus, and then what is their responsibility to the hostile climate that happens on campus,” Levitt said.

In addition, the Riley County Police Department tracks reported sexual offenses and rapes by using an interactive map.

Mellissa Mosher, victim advocate coordinator for RCPD, said in an email, “The [Kansas Bureau of Investigations] 2018 Domestic Violence, Stalking, and Sexual Assault in Kansas report stated that within Riley County there were 55 reported rapes within Riley County and zero reported reports at KSU [on campus].”

Mosher adds 2019 totals are still being tabulated by the KBI.

While these totals seem high, many sexual assaults go unreported. Nations said approximately 62 percent of acts of sexual violence go unreported. That statistic rises to 90 percent on college campuses.

RCPD began a reporting program called “Your Option, Your Control.” Mosher said the goals of the program are to increase the number of reported assaults, increase the identification of offenders and decrease the “sexual victimization” to make Manhattan a safer community.

“Your Option, Your Control” gives reporters three options: complete investigation, partial investigation as determined by the victim or information only, which only requires victims to report as much as they want.

Nations overcame her trauma with support. Now, she is a No More ambassador. As an ambassador, she speaks about her experiences and how to prevent these traumas from happening.

While working through her court case, she had support from Nathaniel Birkhead, associate professor of political science.

“He was really understanding individually, and he really helped me feel comfortable with that process as well as educating others about reasons of sexual assault in class,” Nations said.

The CARE office offers support services to survivors of violence as well. The office works to educate the pubic about why assaults happen and how to prevent them, as well as advocating for victims and survivors.

Henault said many of these incidents happen as a result of societal influences such as rape jokes, over-sexualized media and strict gender roles in society.

“Violence is rooted in power, privilege and oppression,” Henault said.

Nations said something similar during KSUnite: “Sexual violence is about power and control. It’s about each act being committed by someone who asserts that privilege and power over another person.”

Not everyone has a voice to speak out for themselves, and Nations said it is a different process for everyone.

“I encourage people to share their stories whether it be to a support person, a parent, a teacher or one of their friends,” Nations said.

HEALTH Lafene teams up with Manhattan Tech for free dental clinic CATIE HAMMOND THE COLLEGIAN

Lafene Health Center is hosting a dental clinic for students with Manhattan Area Technical College hygienists on Feb. 26. Manhattan Tech’s hygienists are providing screenings, cleanings and fluoride treatments for Kansas State students.

It was completely booked after three days.

Lafene’s marketing and communications specialist, Shawn Funk, helped organize the event that is completely free for K-State students.

“Lafene is actually paying a fee for each student that gets the exam done,” Funk said.

With no fees for students, there are also many other benefits of the dental clinic and a demand for dental cleaning services.

“We are listening to people,” Funk said. “We thought it would be a good idea to provide dental care for students. You know, sometimes they get away

from home and just don’t go to the dentist and so this is a great opportunity for them to come and do it at no cost to them.”

Tony Kim, clinic coordinator at Manhattan Tech, is a K-State alumnus excited to see Lafene again and work with K-State students.

“It’s a safe place to go and get these kind of health services,” Kim said. “A lot of students, unless something hurts, they’re not too worried about it. ... This is something where it’s kind of low-stress and we’re going to give you everything up to even just identifying if you need fillings and stuff like that.”

Director of dental hygiene at Manhattan Tech, Kylie Austin, sees benefits for K-State students and her Manhattan Tech students.

“A big part of it is the hands-on part where they actually practice on their patients,” Austin said. “To be able to walk into this setting and have a handful of patients waiting for them that they can see one day, that’s

just going to give them really valuable experience as well.”

Setting up in Lafene’s conference room, Manhattan Tech will bring all the dental equipment there for the day, which Austin described as a type of portable clinic.

“We receive grant funding from Delta Dental of Kansas,” Austin said.

“So one of the years that we applied for the grant we applied for portable equipment. That allowed us to buy a portable chair that packs up into a nice little carrying-case, but then you unfold it and it looks just like a dental chair. We have units that, again, pull like a suitcase but then you open it up and on all of the supplies you need are right there.”

If you did not get an appointment in this time around, Manhattan Tech has a fully operational clinic open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I know that’s not quite as convenient but we still have the really reduced prices and discounts for students,” Austin said.

Lafene and Manhattan Tech are also discussing another date this semester for the dental clinic.

“I would just keep my eye out because we are hoping to do another one, hopefully in April,” Funk said. “That’s our plan if we can get a scheduled date with them.”

Education graduate program implements robot in rural classroom ANNA SCHMIDT THE COLLEGIAN

The Master of Arts in Teaching graduate program recently implemented a robot into its student teaching program.

Todd Goodson, assistant dean for teacher education and accreditation, and Eileen Wertzberger, field experience coordinator, faced a unique challenge during the 20182019 school year: one of their

many graduate students looking to fulfill a student teaching requirement was unable to find a school compatible with Kansas State’s criteria in her home state of Georgia.

She wanted to stay in Georgia, but go to K-State.

“One of the initiatives and the pushes that we get in education is to be bold and to think in innovative ways to overcome obstacles like this,” Wertzberger said. “So it really just started out of conversations with prin-

cipals and stakeholders about what this could potentially look like.”

It was a principal who suggested telepresence as a way to solve the issue, saying that telepresence allows for real-time interaction, movement around the room and one-on-one communication with students.

CONNECTION Multiple benefits to learnign Chinese, head of K-State language program says

Li Yang grew up in China and first came to the US to pursue her doctorate degree. She got involved at Kansas State once she graduated and she needed to find a job. She said that other than the weather, she likes it here. “[It’s] a really long story,” Yang said. “But, my major at the university was teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. I think it’s a very cool experience.

For America and other countries — being able to speak Chinese, going to other places where you cannot speak English and knowing how to help. Also, by knowing the language and people being able to understand you is very helpful.”

Now an associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages, Yang is also in charge of the Chinese Language Program.

Yang said she has attempted to see why more people haven’t tried to learn Chinese, and the most common answer is that it’s too difficult. Despite this, she gave a few reasons why students should learn Chinese. First, if you are interested in the culture, learning Chinese would be a great option for you.

“China has a long history … and there is a lot of different cultures, even within the country,” Yang said. “We have different minorities; different ethnic groups and they have their own customs and cultures within.”

Next, Yang noted ideas around memorization.

“When you get older, [you] have more of a chance of memory loss,” Yang said. “If you learn a second language it reduces the risk of developing memory problems later down the road.”

A member of the program, Hannah James, junior in secondary education and English, also noted this idea.

“I think it’s good for keeping your mind sharp, because it requires that kind of dedication and study,” James said. “I also think it’s a beautiful language with a lot of history. Andrea Azeltine, junior in accounting, is currently enrolled in both Chinese 5 and a one-onone Chinese 6 class. In her first Chinese class, the first four weeks of the program only focused on pronunciations. She said this really helped her, noting that her dad took a trip to Taiwan and tried to make flashcards to learn the words, and he couldn’t figure out the phonetics.

“The program at K-State sets you up for success from day one, so it’s much easier than learning on your own with flashcards,” Azeltine said.
