The Kansas Board of Regents approved a proposal on Sept. 10 from Kansas State to offer in-state tuition rates to students from Missouri.

K-State hopes to attract more out-of-state students to the university as enrollment has steadily declined over the past six years. University president Richard Myers said in his presentation this tuition change would have a neutral to

positive financial impact on net tuition revenue.

“We thought we need to recruit more out-ofstate students,” Myers said.

“We’d like to make that ... a little bit clearer to potential students from Missouri.”

Missouri residents currently pay 150 percent of K-State’s in-state tuition rate as outlined by the Midwest Student Exchange Program. In-state tuition is $312.50 per credit hour.

“We also have agreements for specific programs for Missouri students that

allow them to have in-state tuition in exchange for slots in their dental schools,” Myers said.

For Samantha Costigan, junior in animal sciences and industry, this change is a no-brainer.

“A lot of the other colleges from Kansas give Missouri residents in-state tuition, especially when they live where I was,” Costigan said. “I was like basically right on the Kansas-Missouri border, and K-State was actually one of the two schools that I looked at in

In August, the Student Access Center announced it would move to a new online system for managing accommodation requests from students with disabilities. The new system, Accessible Information Management, allows students to submit letters of accommodation, upload documentation and communicate their requests virtually.

So far, the system has been an improvement for the center, Jason Maseberg-Tomlinson, director of the center, said.

“It’s working really well for students,” Maseberg-Tomlinson said. “Our previous system was more manual, and now we’ve automated it and we’ve allowed students to make that request online, but also those letters to be sent to faculty to speed up the accommodation process for the student.”

While the online process has been streamlined by the new technology, Maseberg-Tomlinson said the effects of the pandemic on accessibility and the move to online learning will impact students differently across campus.

“When we talk about accessibility, we have to keep in mind that every student is unique, and it’s caseby-case,” he said. “I think for some students, they’re finding it a very comfortable fit with hybrid learning or online learning as compared to their traditional in-person classrooms. For some students, it’s more difficult. I think that online learning requires us to have a different style of organization.”

This semester especially, Maseberg-Tomlinson said the center is trying to keep in mind the health of students who are at a greater risk for getting a serious COVID-19 complications.

“We’re trying to keep in

mind their needs, and look to how we can learn from this experience and help us in the future, help us grow our services, but also understand the complex and dynamic higher education environment as we utilize more technology,” he said.

Maseberg-Tomlinson said that the technological shift due to the pandemic is likely here to stay, for both the Student Access Center and the university as a whole.

“The technology is here, and we’re using it more and it’s not going away,” he said. “I think we’ll find a lot of faculty use more technology in the future after this experience, regardless of COVID-19 … and I think we’ll learn how to be more successful with technology as a campus, but then we’re also gonna learn as an office the accommodation needs of our students in using that technology.”

Costigan said she ultimately chose to attend K-State for the College of Veterinary Medicine as she plans to attend the college once she finishes her undergraduate degree. “[This] opened up more options for students who maybe don’t have a lot of money to pay for out-ofstate tuition but still want to pursue a degree, but ... for some reason don’t want to go to Mizzou or something like that,” Costigan said.

She added one of the few reasons she considered attending a school other than K-State was the tuition rate.

The proposal by K-State to the Board of Regents outlined specific criteria for students to receive the in-state tuition rate. The university would require a minimum GPA of 3.25 and an ACT score of 22. This is the current requirement for the 150 percent rate.

“We can afford to take this chance,” Myers said.

“We think it makes sense (to start) with the state next door where we already have a big presence in terms of alumni and friends.”

Myers said this fits into the university’s strategic enrollment plan which outlines goals to increase the out-of-state freshmen population from 17 percent to 20 percent.

K-State plans to implement these new tuition rates for the the fall 2021 semester.

AMID PANDEMIC, K-STATE AND THE RED CROSS MOVE FORWARD WITH ANNUAL CAMPUS BLOOD DRIVE ANDERSEN JACKSON staff writer

The Red Cross returns to the Kansas State campus for their annual blood drive Sept. 14 to Sept. 17 in the K-State Student Union Ballroom and the Tallgrass Ballroom in Kramer Dining Center.

Jane Hale, external communications director for the Red Cross, said in order to comply with regulations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, donors are required to schedule an appointment.

Donation centers will follow the highest stan-

dards of safety and infection control during the pandemic — including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings, Hale said.

“Staff will be wearing gloves and sanitizing between each donation,” Grayson Gilbert, junior in mass communications and social media manager for the blood drive, said. “Additionally, there will be multiple sanitizer stations at each drive location.”

Although some donors expressed concerns about donating in a pandemic, many remain optimistic about the event.

She said the pandemic won’t discourage her from giving blood because she sees the need.

“COVID-19 wasn’t a concern for me to donate,” Olander said. “I think those who might be worried could be comforted by the lengths the drive is taking to keep others safe.”

Scheduling appointments for the drive can affect the time and locations donors are eligible to go to.

Students and community members can sign up for a time by entering their zip code at the Red Cross website.

K-State Super Store remains open for sports fans, Manhattan community

The K-State Super Store has come along way since opening in 1996 and becoming the official retailer for K-State Athletics. The partnership helps place the Super Store’s Wildcat merchandise in stadiums and pop-up shops while also maintaining its primary location at 519 McCall Rd. The store supports the community with sponsorship opportunities and exposure while operating at the local level thanks to its relationship with the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce.

Store manager Kyra Dreiling said the Super Store’s apparel comes from many suppliers and includes Champion, Coliseum and Nike brands.

The store also gives back to the community by providing a percentage of proceeds to student-athlete programs and supplying discounts for the K-State coupon book.

“I love my college and I love Manhattan, so I love representing K-State through my job.”

After working at K-State Super Store’s main location throughout the summer, McFadden said it’s exciting to see the store get busier with students back in town.

“Game days are insane and crowded,” McFadden said. “This year, we are only at 25 percent capacity, and we have someone watching the door to keep an eye on the number of people in the store. We’re focusing on keeping customers healthy and happy during this time.”

Karly McGuffin, junior in dietetics, said the Super Store caters to the community as well as the school.

“When you walk into the stores, it feels like game day every time,” McGuffin said. “So much school spirit.”

Both pop-up stores at athletic events and the main location are great places to shop, McGuffin said. She said supporting the community, school and small businesses is super important.

“Coming from a small town, I understand this is what makes communities thrive,” McGuffin said.

Dreiling said the store adjusted hours and policies due to the pandemic. Creating a cautious environment for shoppers is the store’s main concern these days, she said.

“We want to provide a safe experience for K-State fans,” Dreiling said.

45 people are allowed in the store at one time, including employees.

The K-State Super Store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Fang, a 25-year-old Chinese-American woman, spoke out on behalf of MAPJ, calling for the commissioner’s resignation.

Then, she announced she would run to replace him.

bers was that we have leadership that is not ready to take on this pandemic,” Fang said.

In addition to those comments, Fang said lack of transparency from the commission solidified her urge to run. MAPJ asked that city commission meetings be live streamed for greater accessibility, and the commission denied this request.

“We’re talking about a government entity that has a budget of $68 million, and they can’t find a way to pay for a webcam,” Fang said. “That showed me that we have outdated elected officials, and what I’ve come to discover on the campaign trail is that many of them just don’t care about the community.”

While Fang said working in community politics has always been on her mind, she never saw herself as a politician.

“Understanding the power that the county commission has and seeing the abuse of it, I felt that it was time someone like me, a 25-year-old minority woman, ran for a seat,” she said.

Some community members have said Fang’s ability to bring a new perspective to the county commission is what makes her a great candidate.

“Fanny’s campaign is a piece of the broader picture to make this a more inclusive and equitable nation,” Louis Bedford, political strategy director for the Fang campaign, said.

Fang said she feels connected to congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s story in that they both began as community organizers.

“We both come from working class families, and we’d just had enough,” Fang said. “Community organizing isn’t getting enough done fast enough, and people are dying because of that.”

“It was the first time since I’d gone to NYU that I had time to breathe and just be present,” Fang said.

“What I saw through working at the Asian Market was a community ready for change, ready to embrace diversity and inclusion.”

Fang said her ultimate goal as a county commissioner would be to start genuine, open conversations between local government and the public.

“As — hopefully the next county commissioner, my job will be to invite people into this political process,” she said. “I get how daunting that is, and my job is to break down those barriers.”

The top three issues of Fang’s platform are access to healthcare, affordable housing and increasing access and representation of the people in government.

She said while it’s easy

for college students in Manhattan to feel like the county government doesn’t affect their lives, the two are closely connected.

“Mask mandates, restrictions on businesses, all that, the final say is within the county commission,” Fang said. “I understand how easy it is to get sucked into college life, but remember, there’s a community around you that is making decisions for you as well.”

Fang said she appreciates the wisdom that older politicians bring to the table, but it’s important to have diverse ages and races in government organizations to create diversity of thought.

This is especially important in a college town, she said.

“Youth and enthusiasm are something we sorely lack in local government,” Amber Starling, Riley County resident, said. “[Fang’s] ideas on accessible government leadership in particular aim to engage and encourage people who have been treated as

less-than, especially college students who have to abide by local laws but have not been granted a seat at the table where they are written.”

The median age in Riley County is 25.

“I don’t know what the average age is of the elected officials,” Fang said. “But you can look up a picture of the county commission, and I guarantee you’re not going to feel represented by that board.”

At 25, Fang’s age has been a topic of discussion since she announced her run, and she said she sees it as an asset rather than a disadvantage.

“When [people] talk about my age, they say, ‘You’re inexperienced,’” she said. “It’s not that I’m inexperienced, it’s that I have a different set of experiences.

If we want to grow, that is exactly what we need.”

LITTLE ITALY IN LITTLE APPLE New Italian restaurant to open in Aggieville

Nico’s Little Italy, the sister restaurant of Salina-based Martinelli’s Little Italy, plans to open in Aggieville sometime in October.

While the restaurant itself is new to the Manhattan area, operating partner Nicolette Unruh is a familiar face among the community. She has lived in Manhattan for the past 4 years, driving back and forth from Martinelli’s for work ever since.

“I’ve worked at Martinelli’s since 2006, so for a long time I guess,” Unruh said. “I love Manhattan, I really enjoy the Flint Hills, and I don’t really want to move, so [Nico’s] was just a good opportunity to expand our operations.”

Martinelli’s catered to various Manhattan wedding venues in the past, so an idea for a local version of the restaurant has been around a while.

“There’s a market for an Italian restaurant in [Manhattan], and we feel like that kind of fit the bill for us, especially with me living here,” Unruh said.

Opening during the COVID-19 pandemic has come with its fair share of obstacles, but Martinelli’s faced its own share of difficulties when opening in 2001.

“Martinelli’s opened in 2001, and it was in September, and if you know a whole lot about September 2001, lots of crazy things went down in the economy and the United States at that time,” Unruh said. “Sometimes taking risks gives you the opportunity to be really successful.”

Nico's faced issues when obtaining proper licensure to operate as people are still working from home. The sudden halt in normal procedures slowed the process down.

“So it just takes a little longer than anticipated or hoped for.”

Martinelli’s remained open through the pandemic, so the restaurant figured out ways to operate safely and efficiently. Constant sanitization and the creation of new services are just a few ways they plan to ensure a safe environment for customers at Nico's.

“We’ve always done delivery and takeout, but the curb-

side option and no-contact delivery is something newer for us, so just implementing some processes that allow for us to do that, taking a phone number, vehicle make and model, that kind of stuff. Just small changes to how we take those orders,” Unruh said.

Nico’s will have designated parking spaces for curbside pickup. The restaurant will also provide online ordering and delivery drivers, choosing not to use third-party services such as EatStreet or Grubhub.

“We believe that we can keep track of our staff if they’re safe and healthy because we’re able to monitor them as they

come into our store versus an outside party where we’re not sure about who’s coming to pick up the food and who’s delivering it,” Unruh said.

Jenri Conley, sophomore in secondary education, plans to utilize some of these new services.

“Personally, I’m not super comfortable with going and dining in at a restaurant right now,” Conley said. “I love curbside because it’s just really convenient, and when you don’t have a delivery fee that’s even better.”

While Conley was not aware of Nico’s future in Manhattan, she was very fa-

miliar with Martinelli’s.

“I have eaten at Martinelli’s, so that makes this a little exciting because Martinelli’s is so good," Conley said. "Putting a restaurant like that in the business district of a college town is definitely a smart move."

Both Conley and Raegan Wessel, junior in civil engineering, said Nico's might face some struggles opening up in Aggieville given the pandemic.

“My friends and I rarely go to Aggieville anymore,” Conley said. “Whenever there’s a lot less people down in Aggieville, it might be harder to bring at-

tention to the fact you’re opening a restaurant there.”

Similarly, Wessel said she plans to avoid Aggieville for the time being. She also voiced concern for future employees.

“People would probably be nervous to start a job as a waitress or waiter right now, so I’m sure that might be difficult,” Wessel said.

Unruh said hiring has yet to be an issue for the budding business.

“We’re starting to collect applications,” Unruh said.

“We haven’t done interviews at this point to actually fully hire until we have a firm opening date. We have a good handful of applications, it’ll just be interesting to see how that goes. [We’ll] see when we start doing interviews what people think and how they feel.”

Despite the concerns, Wessel said she has high hopes for Nico’s and its future in Manhattan.

“I think as long as there are students in Manhattan they will be okay,” Wessel said. “If we’re still here, I think they’ll do good.”

Nico’s describes itself as “unpretentious Italian cuisine” and offers a large menu with large portions. Dishes include classic chicken Alfredo, Sicilian shrimp and scallops, toasted ravioli, chop salad and much more.

“When I think about Italian food and I think about Italy, it’s so focused on getting together and spending time together,” Unruh said. “We really like to think of ourselves as a place where anyone can come, and you can come as you are, you don’t have to be fancy. It’s just a place to come be a part of the family.”

Nico’s Little Italy is located at 1101 Moro St., Suite 111, and Unruh estimates the business will open sometime in October.

OPINION: Wildcats in for a tough game Saturday NATHAN ENSERRO assistant sports editor

Kansas State will start its 2020 season 11 a.m. Saturday at home against Arkansas State.

This will be the third matchup between the two teams, but the first since Arkansas State made the jump to FBS — then called Division I-A — in 1992.

The Red Wolves have the distinct advantage of coming into this game having already played one game this season — a 37-24 loss to rival Memphis. With all of the changes to the schedule due to COVID 19, playing one game already awards an advantage to Arkansas State.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Red Wolves.

Head coach Blake Anderson enters his seventh season in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Anderson has won two Sunbelt conference titles during his tenure — outright in 2015 and shared in 2016. He also added a co-division title in 2018.

Anderson is an offensive-minded head coach and develops high-scoring offenses wherever he goes. The Red Wolves have scored 30 or more points in 65 percent of their games and have put up

over 400 yards in 69 percent of their games played under Anderson.

They run a pretty standard hurry-up spread offense.

In their game against Memphis last week, they lined up with three receivers, a running back and a tight end-full back hybrid they call TE-Y or Y back. Even in obvious pass situations, they keep a running back in the formation for pass protection.

The Y back lines up a couple of steps behind the guard and is used primarily as a lead blocker, but also goes out into the pattern on passing plays and is occasionally used in pass blocking.

The Red Wolves run to set up the pass and use a lot of play action in the passing game. A lot of pass plays include some sort of play fake to the running back, who then sags back to pick up blitzers.

On defense, they run the 3-3-5 lineup — three linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs — which is getting popular as a way to stop spread offenses. The secondary features a third safety who either flows to the ball or drops in coverage.

The 3-3-5 relies on stout run-stopping up front to free up defenders to cover receivers and

Senior defensive lineman Forrest Merrill, a transfer from Missouri State, anchors the center of their defense.

He’s big — 6-foot-1-inch, 338 pounds — and athletic. He gets penetration on run plays and forces the running back to bounce outside into their linebackers who are crashing.

He recorded seven total tackles last week, including one for a 13-yard loss.

KEYS TO THE GAME

In the trenches K-State’s offensive line is inexperienced, but huge. The starters for this season average a touch over 320 pounds, according to GoPowercat’s D. Scott Fritchen. This will be the heaviest line since 1997 for the Wildcats.

Merrill feasted on the comparatively smaller Memphis offensive line last week, but will he be able to penetrate K-State’s beefier line this week? If he struggles, K-State should be able to run the ball between the tackles and attack the middle of the defense.

Schematically, K-State’s power-run game is a good match-up for the 3-3-5. If the running lanes open up, Arkansas State will likely end up having to commit the extra

defensive back to stopping the run, opening up the play-action passing game.

Slow start Arkansas State hung around with Memphis until midway through the third quarter last week when Memphis’s talent advantage started to show.

K-State had an abnormal offseason, but they cannot afford to let that show early against the Arkansas State hurry-up offense. If K-State has massive miscues due to the Red Wolves’ tempo, they could find themselves in a hole early.

Likewise, K-State will have to avoid major mistakes on offense in the center-quarterback exchange and the mesh point on handoffs.

QB controversy Arkansas State has two quaArkansas State has two quarterbacks at the top of their depth chart: sophomore Layne Hatcher, a transfer from Alabama, and junior Logan Bonner.

Bonner got the start last week, but both quarterbacks played a similar number of snaps while the coaching staff evaluated them. Hatcher played a more efficient game, he threw for a higher completion percentage and more

yards, but Bonner had the only touchdown pass.

Truthfully, I could not tell much of a difference between the two skill-wise in the Memphis game. They both throw similar deep balls and have similar arm strength.

PREDICTION:

K-State struggles to move the ball early as the offensive line gels, but their size and talent are enough to get the job done. In the second half, the talent disparity at skill position shows up and K-State pulls away.

K-State wins 31-14.

The Wildcats play host to the Red Wolves on Saturday in a quick tuneup game before jumping into Big 12 Conference play, which is celebrating 25 years as a conference this season.

Kansas State has a lot to prove after being picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 Conference preseason poll. Last year, the poll predicted K-State would finish ninth but the team tied for third.

K-State Athletics announced Thursday that Saturday’s game will serve as the program’s unity game. During warmups, players will wear attire featuring social justice messages such as “unity”, “Black Lives Matter” and “Raise Your Voice.”

CATCHING UP WITH THE WILDCATS

The Wildcats return 47 letter-winners from 2019, including 12 starters following an 8-5 season and a Liberty Bowl appearance in 2019. K-State boasts 21 true freshmen and 22 seniors in 2020. The sophomore class is the largest on the squad with 33 players, including wide receivers Malik Knowles and Joshua Youngblood.

OFFENSE

Senior quarterback Skylar Thompson gears up to lead the Wildcats this season. Chasing history, Thompson is aiming to become the second player in school history with 5,000 passing and 1,000 rush yards. Thompson needs 605 passing yards to reach that mark.

The offensive line remains the biggest question for the Wildcats after losing all the line’s starters.

The limited practice the

Wildcats have had will also not be helping the situation.

The young receiving core will be looking to improve in 2020 after finishing at the bottom of the conference in passing offense. The Wildcats return players with 67 percent receiving yards from last year, with the biggest loss being Dalton Schoen, who became an undrafted free agent after his senior season. Wide receiver Malik Knowles is responsible for 16.9 percent of the production returning.

Head coach Chris Klieman said the backfield would be held by committee. Senior running back Harry Trotter is listed as the starter for week one, and fellow senior running back Tyler Burns is listed as the second option for the Wildcats. True freshman running back Deuce Vaughn made the week-one depth chart and was highly touted out of fall camp.

DEFENSE

Safeties coach Joe Klanderman will take over the reins as the defensive coordinator after Scottie Hazelton departed for Michigan State following last season. The change of leadership mixed with the reduced practice time will be something to watch for early in the season.

The defense is returning two experienced players at linebacker this season, Justin Hughes and Elijah Sullivan return to the field after missing 2019 with injuries. The two high school teammates have appeared in a combined 24 games for K-State and both were named captains for the 2020 season.

Junior defensive end Wyatt Hubert was

named to the All-Big 12 preseason team and will be one of the main leaders of the defensive line. Hubert had 11.5 sacks in his first two seasons, which is tied for second-most in school history by a player in that time span. Hubert was named to the firstteam All-Big 12 list and received votes for Big 12 defensive player of the year in 2019.

The K-State defense will be without senior defensive back Jonathan Alexander, who opted out of the season due to safety concerns regarding COVID-19. In 12 games last season, Alexander had 25 tackles, a blocked field goal, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in 2019.

SPECIAL TEAMS

K-State football has had a long-running tradition of “Special Teams U,” and this year is no different. The four kickoff touchdowns last year led the nation, which tied the school record. Youngblood was responsible for three

of those returns, which earned him Big 12 special teams player of the year honors. The Wildcats returned 100 percent of both kickoff and punt return production from 2019.

ARKANSAS STATE RED WOLVES

The Red Wolves travel to Manhattan after a 37-24 defeat to Memphis last weekend. Arkansas State finished with 424 total yards in the game — 299 of those yards through the air.

The Red Wolves utilized two quarterbacks and will likely do that against the Wildcats on Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Layne Hatcher threw for 166 yards, and junior quarterback Logan Bonner threw for 133 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

K-State: Sophomore defensive end Khalid Duke was highly touted out of fall camp. Duke saw action in seven games last season and recorded seven tackles and two sacks last season. The

The opening weekend of college football season has arrived, and college football players are back on the daily grind of the regular season. Their days involve early morning practice, work outs, school work, watching film, healthy eating and near-constant mask-wearing.

There is no exception to the daily grind for sixth-year senior linebacker Justin Hughes.

Hughes, who sat out last year due to a season-ending knee injury during spring practice, starts his day with an early morning body check.

“I wake up, and come to [Vanier Family Football Complex],” Hughes said.

“Get some treatment in just to get my knee better

and the rest of my body parts. My knee, whatever is hurting me at the time, just go [to the complex] and get right.”

After getting his body checked at Vanier, Hughes checks in with his teammates to prepare for another day of practice and everything that comes with it.

“We go to practice and get right schematically and talk about the things that we are going to work on in practice,” Hughes said.

Talking about practice is one thing, but after those discussions the defense has to show up on the field.

“Then we go out and practice, and [we] get right,” Hughes said.

Football doesn’t end after practice for Hughes, though. Once he gets home he studies film and mentally prepares for everything else to come before game day.

“I go and look at the things I need to work on when I am at home on my iPad,” Hughes said. “Things we need to work on as a defense and find anything that I have questions on, or what I messed up on in practice or what we messed up on as a team in practice.

I get it done and get it in my head so I can prepare for Saturday.”

Throughout his day, Hughes also works on his classes, does work outs and makes sure to keep a healthy diet. But for Hughes, the football grind truly never stops.

The effort the team put in up to this point will finally be put to the test on Saturday as K-State opens up their season against the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Bill Snyder Family Stadium amid new safety measures and protocols due to COVID-19.

K-State athletics mental health director helps athletes cope with pandemic, lifestyle changes KYLE RUDER staff writer

COVID-19 brought with it an abundant of physical affects, but it has also wreaked havoc on mental health. Anne Weese, director of mental wellness for athletes, said her job has been dramatically affected by the pandemic.

Weese, a Salina native, has been employed by Kansas State since March 2018, but was previously with the athletic department from 2011 to 2013 while finishing an internship for her doctorate.

Weese now works with every varsity sport in the athletic department and provides student athletes the opportu-

nity to discuss their mental or physical health issues with an expert in the field.

“They are students so they have access to the counseling center the way any other student would, but I am the only provider here,” Weese said. “Sometimes if we have athletes with more specific needs like alcohol and substance abuse or eating disorders, we’ll find a specialist in the community to connect them to.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has left many athletes with much uncertainty regarding their seasons and disruptions to their everyday lifestyle.

“Some of the major concerns I see currently are athletes struggling with

managing the abrupt changes in their schedules, adjusting to varying levels of fitness as they return to their sport, disordered eating behaviors, sleep disruptions, increased anxiety and low moods,” Weese said.

Weese said even though she is the only person in the athletic department to specifically deal with mental health, players know they can always reach out to their coaching staff as well.

Kenzie Applegate, sophomore defender on the soccer team, said she feels like her coaches make sure mental health and checkups are a priority.

Applegate is one of the many athletes that have been affected by the changes that

COVID-19 has created for athletics, including the need to quarantine upon arrival on campus.

“At first it was very difficult for us, especially since we had just gotten out of quarantine and were excited to be back on campus,” Applegate says. “Until we were out of quarantine, we couldn’t see each other, but once we got in our bubble it was good,” Applegate said.

Gabe Romo, associate head coach for K-State Soccer, is a former collegiate athlete himself, so he finds himself relating to similar situations that his players are going through right now.

“It is very nice coming from a background of being a

student athlete,” Romo said.

“I would say right now is the toughest year I’ve ever seen for mental health and student athletes. I try and do a good job as much as I can every day to check on them, whether it’s in person or through text if I didn’t get an opportunity to talk to them that day.”

Weese meets with over a quarter of K-State’s athletes regularly. Since the pandemic began, Weese started asking herself how she could navigate her job in the midst of it all.

“I have never been a therapist during a pandemic,” Weese said. “How do you do this? What does it look like?

Living in constant uncertainty has been very challenging.

For a lot of our athletes, this

is their livelihood and this is their family’s livelihood. The athletes interested in coming to talk to me — my numbers have doubled.”

This year has brought many challenges with it and is testing a lot of K-State athletes.

“I would say if the average severity of concern was a four, we’re talking about now being at like a seven or an eight,” Weese said.

Amid the chaos, Weese recently received a donation from a donor to help with the mental health needs of athletes across campus. Weese plans to immediately use the donation in the favor of the athletes to help them during these hard times.

Childhood friends, athletes reunite for their senior year as Wildcats

The Kansas State football team added a boost to their offense back in April. It was a familiar name to Chris Klieman’s coaching staff and to senior quarterback Skylar Thompson: 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound tight end from the

University of Northern Iowa, Briley Moore.

Moore played against Kleiman’s coaching staff at North Dakota State four times when at Northern Iowa. In those four games against NDSU, Moore saw how their coaching staff utilized the tight end spot in the NDSU offense. “[Their system of tight

ends] was one of the biggest reasons going into transferring,” Moore said.

He was thrilled when K-State gave him the call.

“I would have my fingers crossed hoping K-State would call because of the things I had seen them do with their tight ends while I was at Northern Iowa,” Moore said.

After he entered the transfer portal, he texted his hometown friend Skylar Thompson, having spoken to K-State a couple of times already.

“It was almost a no brainer from there,” Moore said.

The relationship between Thompson and Moore goes back to fifth grade, where the two would play against each

other in basketball almost weekly. They remained good friends throughout high school, and in college they both returned to Missouri during the summer and practiced together.

During those summer reunions in Missouri, the duo always discussed one thing: playing on the same team.

“After each [practice together] we would talk about how crazy it would be if we were able to play together,” Moore said. “Not actually thinking that would come true.

But now, looking back at it, it seems like it is almost too good to be true.”

The excitement peaked for the duo the first time they reunited in-person at K-State, and it has continued ever since.

“I remember we both just started laughing — we were on the phone a lot texting each other,” Moore said “And still to this day we will say, ‘It doesn’t seem real.’ It is crazy how both of our paths ended up crossing the way they did with my injury from last year preventing me from playing my senior season, and now it is just unreal. God definitely has his hands over the whole situation to lead us together to play our senior year.”

Klieman said he is excited to see what kind of year Moore will have at K-State.

“Briley is going to be a definite impact player for us this year,” Klieman said. “You can tell his exceptional physical

skills whether it is blocking to the point of attack or running routes. He has gained the respect from our older guys really fast just because of how he works and the fact that he competes on every down. You can flex him out. We’re going to utilize him in an awful lot of positions, so I’m excited for him to have the opportunity, which he’s earned.”

As the season begins this Saturday, it will be the first time the Missouri natives play their first college football game together. They are both very anxious, but most importantly, Thompson said — it’s about having fun.

“Even this weekend, we were texting back and forth during the Memphis game when [Arkansas State] was playing Memphis — we said, ‘Man, it’s really here. We’re about to go strap it up and have the same uniform on and go compete and play together,” Thompson said.

“I feel like [Moore] and I are personally very similar as far as our approach on life and our values,” Thompson continued. “He means a lot to me and I’m just so excited for him to have this opportunity to play on this stage and play in our offense. He’s going to help us out so much in the run game, pass game, but above all, he’s just a great person, he’s a great leader. I’m just super excited to go out there and make memories and plays with him.”

Stadium sees new regulations, policies for upcoming season RYAN ZIELSDORF staff writer

As the temperature drops and the leaves begin to change colors, fall sports linger on the horizon. Since the recent outbreak of COVID-19, Kansas State’s athletic department has made some changes, trying to give fans a good experience this season while still being safe.

“Game day in 2020 will obviously be very different from what we have come to expect at K-State,” Casey Scott, executive associate AD for internal oper-

ations and event management, said. “The football, soccer and volleyball teams have all taken precautions to reduce the spreading of the virus.”

On game days, fans will be required to wear a facial covering over their mouth and nose in order to enter the stadium.

This behavior must continue inside the sporting complex.

“Fans with a medical condition, mental health condition, deaf or hard of hearing or have a disability that prevents them from wearing a face covering will be required

to wear a face shield as a reasonable modification,” Scott said. “Children five and under are not required to wear a face covering. Masks are just one of many precautions used to help keep Wildcat Nation safe and healthy this season.”

If fans are disobeying the mandate on Saturday, Scott said stadium staff are prepared.

“As we would with any fan failing to abide to a stadium policy, our stadium staff will seek compliance first by reminding them to put on their

mask and continue wearing it unless actively eating or drinking in their seat,” he said. “If a fan continues to ignore the policy after being reminded, they may be asked to leave the stadium.”

Fans will not be allowed to tailgate at any sporting events this season. Typical tailgating items such as lawn chairs, coolers, grills, tent canopies and tables are prohibited.

Additionally, fans will not be allowed to congregate at their vehicles to eat, drink or socialize prior to the start

of the game.

“Our staff will encourage them to park, gather their game gear and walk directly to the stadium to enter,” Scott said.

Additionally, fans can’t to re-enter the stadium if they choose to leave at any point.

This helps eliminate congestion at gates, particularly before and after halftime.

All stadium concession stands will be open. However, service lines will be spaced to maintain social distancing.

“Seating has been assigned by section, with fans

instructed to sit general-admission style and socially distanced from other pods of fans,” Scott said.

Just like anything that has happened this year, Bill Snyder Family Stadium game day procedures are subject to change.

One big question is if these procedures will prevent the spread of COVID-19 during a K-State football game. The first opportunity to see will be Saturday as the Wildcats take on Arkansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

After nearly a year of business, ZL Smoothie remains the only smoothie shop in Manhattan to incorporate hemp into their products.

Located on 1101 Moro St., the health-conscious smoothie shop’s menu includes fruit, detox, coffee and kid-friendly smoothies with phytocannabinoid add-ins from the cannabis plant.

ZL caters to a lifestyle of health and wellness inspired by partnerships between smoothie shops and fitness centers in northern Iowa.

Joe Stegman, general manager of ZL Smoothie, is related to the founder of Zakah Life, ZL Smoothie’s hemp supplier. The founder, Stegman’s cousin, wanted a storefront for Zakah Life, so the blend of smoothies and hemp was born.

Hemp affects receptor systems in the body, and ZL Smoothie’s particular focus is pain management.

“Hemp is a homeostatic regulator,” Stegman said.

“The one we work with is a hemp plant with a high CBD profile that has a low enough THC content to be classified as hemp.”

Everything in the hemp

plant is used at ZL, which Stegman said is important to yield the range of the ingredient’s benefits. The hemp affects the phytocannabinoid receptor system — in smoothies, its main purpose is regulation.

“I had a lot of digestive issues... but it’s [phytocannabinoids] that helped me get regulated,” Stegman said.

“I would have tendinitis and bursitis in my knees … it just knocks that swelling down. If you’re groggy in the morning, it’s gonna pick you up.”

Customers often ask Stegman what they are supposed to feel after drinking ZL’s smoothies with hemp, but he said the focus should be as much about what customers don’t feel as what they do. If customers previously had pain, Stegman said they should pay attention to their pain levels after the smoothie to see if the hemp relieved any pain or other symptoms. see page

“[It’s] hard to believe you have an entire receptor system in your body and not believe it’s not meant for us [to use],” Stegman said.

Another important ingredient in ZL products is kratom, which affects dopamine receptors in the body. At ZL, this ingredient is used for regulating pain and mood.

There are three different levels of kratom at the shop: green for mood boosting, red for calming and white as

a “happy medium” between the two.

The other ingredients ZL puts in its smoothies are real and natural, not juice mixes or powders, Stegman said.

“We are about the people, the customers, because as good as our smoothies are, it’s not really why we’re here,” he said. “We just try to help peo-

ple naturally and holistically.”

For Stegman, the most rewarding part of working at ZL is hearing how the smoothies have helped the customers.

“When they come back in and talk about how amazing the product is and moments of relief, that’s what we’re going for… You develop

these relations with these people, and they come in and just pour it all out,” he said.

Being local rather than a high-traffic chain restaurant makes it easier to build those relationships, an aspect that Stegman said he enjoys.

COVID-19’s influence on ZL has been minimal. The smoothie shop was already a

carry-out-based business, so the model hasn’t had to go through any drastic changes.

BEHIND THE MASK How ‘wheel time’ helps this student roll with constant changes EMMA WITTER news editor

Some nights at City Park, it’s possible to catch a glimpse of two glowing wheels spinning down the sidewalk.

Upon a closer look, one can see Tessa Anderson, junior in English education, taking laps around the park.

Anderson said high-energy activities are essential for getting herself out of the house.

“My roommates and I go on a lot of walks, we play a lot of ‘Just Dance’ and I also bought a Razor scooter. It’s purple with light-up wheels,” she said.

Community and a con-

scious effort to stay active have been Anderson’s go-tos to avoid feeling isolated.

“At the very beginning of corona, I was living with no one, and my mental health really suffered,” Anderson said. “Then, I moved in with lots of women, and that has been probably the biggest change, just watching how much community affects my mental health.”

Many students have found that living with roommates helps with feelings of isolation, and Anderson said the solidarity she finds with hers has been comforting.

“We’re all going through similar things, but we’re doing it together, and we’re all

able to support each other and check in,” she said. “In the beginning, no one was around, and you had to be really intentional about reaching out to people. Now, I can just walk downstairs and count on people being around.”

Outside of the house, Anderson can be found rolling around town on her way to a coffee shop for a change of scenery. Open, public spaces are a great place to see people outside of roommate relationships, she said.

When she’s not riding her light-up scooter anywhere in particular, Anderson said she likes to meet up with friends.

“We go and have ‘wheel time,’ and that is spectacu-

In the spring, the theater department had to postpone its production of Macbeth as the threat of the pandemic forced Kansas State to close its campuses.

After months of waiting, the department will put on its production of Macbeth, but with a new twist.

Instead of crowding into a theater to watch the show, audiences can listen to it.

The Shakespearean classic and other shows planned for the 2020-2021 season will be available on the “Kansas Theatre Works” podcast.

“We called it ‘Kansas Theatre Works’ for two reasons,” Jennifer Vellenga, theater program director, said. “One is there is a famous audio play production called ‘L.A. Theatre

Works.’ The other reason is we wanted it to be a play on words because Kansas theater, works. We may be shut down, but Kansas theater works anyway.”

Before deciding to do a podcast, Vellenga said she was in a bind and didn’t know how to make the production work safely.

“It’s easy to keep the audience’s safe, it’s not easy to keep actors safe because they are in costumes, they have tight dressing room spaces,” Vellenga said. “We thought about outdoor theater ... like a drive-in movie.”

Vellenga got the idea to do an audio-based production from her experience recording a podcast.

“All of a sudden, it hit me, like ‘Oh my gosh, I know how to do a podcast. It only takes the voice. There’s a ton of audio storytelling. Let’s do a podcast,’”

From stage to streaming, the show must go on for K-State Theatre

she said. “I put it to a vote to the faculty, and they were 100 percent anonymous, they wanted to do it.”

The students also had to be on board with doing the podcast. She said they were enthusiastic when they heard the idea for the first time.

“They sat up and their faces lit up, and it was at that moment I knew that we were doing this,” Vellenga said.

Hunter Parker, senior in theater and assistant director for Macbeth, said he’s excited at the prospect of exploring voice acting in the productions.

“I think it’s amazing that our instructors went with this idea because voice acting is a major profession,” Parker said. “All the animated movies, commercials, radio shows podcasts, etc. These are all occupations that our instructors

are helping are prepare for.”

While the rights for playing Macbeth through a podcast were straightforward since Shakespeare’s work is in the public domain, rights for streaming and broadcasting other shows could be unavailable or too expensive, Vellenga said. This led the department to turn to alumni to provide plays they had already written or to write new materials for the department to use.

What’s most challenging about the podcast, Vellegena said, is that they can’t get revenue from selling tickets, which the program traditionally relies on.

“We are going to be selling ad spots,” she said. “If departments, businesses or student organizations have something they want to advertise for the podcast, we’ll

work with them.”

While the podcast is online, there are still expenses incurred, Vellinga said. “We have fewer things to pay for, but we don’t have big rights budgets to pay for big musicals,” she said. “We still have expenses, we still have all the microphones to buy and we have to release the podcast through podcast hosts, so there are expenses — they just shifted.”

This isn’t the first time audio theater productions have been offered at K-State.

In fact, such performances can be traced back to the 1950s.

“We haven’t done audio plays in one or two years, we’ve done Halloween plays, one-act plays and live in-studio plays,” Ian Punnett, chief operator of Wildcat 91.9 and professor of practice for the A.Q.

Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, said.

Punnett is excited to work with faculty and students on this interdepartmental collaboration.

“These are terrific, talented people, faculty and students,” Punnett said.

The radio station will mostly do audio capture and edit the productions for the theater department.

“Kansas Theatre Works” will be available on Apple, Google Play and the department’s website.

The podcast will begin with an audio performance of Macbeth on Oct. 15.

Eight to 10 other episodes will be available. Some bonus episodes will also be released with some behind the scenes insight from playwrights, the directors and others.

Latinas Unidas: Poderosas y Educadas launched as an independent student organization by co-presidents Alejandra Gonzalez and Sofia Leal earlier this month.

Gonzalez, junior in finance, and Leal, junior in marketing, founded United Latinas: Powerful and Educated which was inspired by

a Hispanic leadership conference held last year in Chicago. Participants at the conference were able to share their experiences at school and in life through the lens of their Latinx identities.

After months of forming a mission statement and value pillars, LUPE held its first meeting in Forum Hall on Sept. 1. More than 20 students attended in-person and over Zoom.

come in different shapes, sizes, colors, different languages — everything.”

The founders of LUPE drew inspiration from other schools’ Hispanic and Latinx Organizations and Black Student Unions for their value pillars: unity, future, health, cultural awareness and community.

Inclusivity is one of the most important aspects of the organization to promote, Gonzalez said.

“We want people to know that even though it says ‘Latinas,’ it’s open to anyone — any gender, any way that you identify,” she said. “We focus on those (Latina) aspects just because that’s what we are, and that’s what we know best, but it’s not exclusive.”

The main issues within the Latinx community that LUPE hopes to address include machismo or toxic masculinity, abuse and oppression of women, immigration struggles and society’s view of Latinx women.

Gonzalez said a current focus on the census will help encourage Latinx representation in the population.

“We want (members) to know that it’s not a danger to be counted, because I know that was a big stigma,” Gonzalez said. “Growing up, my parents were like, ‘Are we gonna fill that out?’”

The political climate in general will also be a focus for LUPE in the coming months.

“We want to get people more informed about their vote, what the parties are actually representing and what they’re advocating for,” Gonzalez said.

While the census and November election are LUPE’s current points of focus, Gonzalez said discussions within the organization will change along with the times.

“You know, the world is always changing, so who knows?” Gonzalez said. “There might be other issues next year.

One issue at a time.”

Students pick up the pieces, mourn following day of destruction This Collegian article was originally published on Sept.

13, 2001 — just days after the events of 9/11. The original author was Nancy Hull.

Second-day news coverage of terrorism in America blared on the big screen TV as students and faculty filed into the K-State Student Union’s Forum Hall.

After the screen went up, Don Fallon stood onstage beside an American flag and addressed the interfaith prayer service Wednesday afternoon.

“This is a difficult time in

our lives, nation and families,” Fallon, coordinator of K-State’s religious activities, said.

Fallon said he met with students Tuesday who were shocked, fearful and confused after learning of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. that day.

These feelings, Fallon said, made him realize students needed to come together and talk.

“We need to break those barriers that separate us,” he said. “Everyone has a common need — to be loved and to love.”

During the service, representatives from five different faith groups shared their support, affirmations and readings.

Houchang Khatamian of the Baha’i faith emphasized the oneness of humanity and urged all nations to come together.

“We see each other as one family and Earth as one home,” he said.

Muslim faith representative Mohammad Al-Deeb said he was worried some students misunderstand the faith.

“We love everyone,” he said.

He said the Muslim faith condemns terrorist acts.

“God doesn’t tell anyone to kill an innocent soul,” he said.

“If anyone killed an innocent person, it’s as if they killed all mankind,” Al-Deeb read from a passage. “If anyone saved a life, it’s as if they saved all mankind.”

Modern-day Pearl Harbor should unite campus This Collegian editorial was originally published on Sept. 12, 2001 — less than 24 hours after the Twin Towers fell.

Now, we know how our grandparents felt when Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941. That day, more than 2,000 people died.

On [Sept. 11, 2001], terrorists crashed jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It was the first attack of this proportion on the mainland soil.

Each of us will remember exactly where we were and how our hearts stopped across campus when the news was disseminated.

Some classes were canceled, and hundreds of students huddled around televisions across campus, just trying to grasp what had happened.

Sitting in the heart of the country, it is almost impossible to even grasp that it did happen. But we need to stay calm, take a deep breath and think about this day logically.

The press has billed this day as an event as big as —

if not bigger than — Pearl Harbor.

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor in World War II, Americans knew where to focus their anger, and they did.

The Japanese became our bitter enemies.

We launched face-first into World War II, and we thought it best to imprison hundreds of our fellow countrymen in imprisonment camps. Mistakes were made.

On Tuesday, [Sept. 11, 2001], President George Bush vowed to “hunt down and punish whoever was responsible for the cowardly bombings.” He vowed to protect Americans and said “the resolve of our nation is being tested.”

Before we dive into a war with the ghost who organized and implemented such a horrific tragedy on our country, we need to be careful at whom we point our fingers.

We don’t know who the terrorist was who planned the attacks. It could have been an American, it could have been a foreigner, it could have been someone’s

grandmother. The fact is that we don’t know. Since we don’t know, it is important for us to treat everyone as equal.

There is a large contingent of international students on this campus.

Previous terrorist attacks have been committed by foreigners. Previous attacks have also been committed

by Americans on the U.S. It is vital in this time of chaos and uncertainty for us to bind together as a K-State community and focus not on who committed the act, but rather that such an act was committed and how it will bruise American history forever.

The American pulse rate rises with every report that comes in from the national media. Regardless, we need to keep the blood f lowing on this campus, keep our heads up and bond together.

Now that we know what a day like Dec. 7 must have felt like, let’s remember all the good and bad, the pain and suffering that resulted from our targeting of a specific ethnic group within our na-

tion. Let’s do better than our forefathers and mothers did.

Let’s support one another and refuse to point fingers at this terrorist ghost. Although Manhattan, New York, is bleeding, Manhattan, Kansas, doesn’t have to.
