That's what they said. " Basketball has been taken off the hook ." Those sentiments were expressed by a number of New York sports writers following the NIT finals . For from Ohio's rolling hills and the highlands of Utah had come two ambitious groups of young men to capture the hearts of metropolitan New York ... Tom Blackburn's Flyers and Stan Watt 's classy Cougars . Faith in the ult imate victory of sport over forces seeking surreptitious gain was exhibited by 18,379 fans who gave Mad ison Square Garden its largest crowd of the season . Shaken faith began to steady. Basketball was making its comeback.

AIR CITY WELCOMES FLYERS Homecoming staggered the Flyers . Flashbulbs popped; a WONE tape recorder hummed ; the Flyers filed from their plane between a ROTC honor guard and several thousand followers, who braved cold , wet weather to rock Vandalia Airport with their cheers . The well-mapped Chamber of Commerce-University of Dayton-program got underway as the Flyers were hustled into waiting autos and raced toward the Fieldhouse. Proud Daytonians waved from lighted porches along the way. At Northridge fire trucks, red signals flashing, flanked the road . On Main Street drivers stopped their autos to step out and cheer. The Flyers were met by 3,500 ci ti zens, WLW-D's television cameras, and mikes of WING and WHIO . Merle Smith , ' 25, city commissioner emceed as city officials, business and industrial leaders, and alumni paid tribute to a gallant ball club .
