Industrial Engr. Dep't. Opens at U.D. Father George J. R enneker, S.M., University of D ay ton pres id ent, a nnounced a t Commencement exercises the establi hment of an Industrial Engin ee ring D e partm ent. Students will be enrofled for the four-year cour e beginning September, 1951. Demand of industry and business, particularl y in the local area have been used as a basis for determining the new curriculum and course of study. This new department will tend also to furni sh engineering students with a busin e s a well as a technical background . It was brought to the a ttention of th e administration that there is a lack of college graduates with a background similar to that of an industrial engineer. Courses in both engineering and business administra tion fi elds will be requirements in the curriculum. Anoth er importa nt announcement concern ed the elimina tion of the Bachelor of Science degree in secretarial studies at the Universi-ty of D ayton . Student in the bu iness division desiring a ecreta rial course will be offered the following alternatives: 1. A certifi cate in secretarial studies followin g the compl etion of a twoyear termin al program. 2. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Busine s Admini tration following a fo ur- year c urricul um. Students who h ave completed the two-year termin al program can make application to enter a junior class in Business Administra tion. 3. Th e degree of Bachelor of Science in Education a nd Commercial Education will be awarded following the completion of a four-year curriculum. Commencement exercises were held on June 9, a t the Na tional Cash Register Auditorium. The Mo t R ev. K arl J. Alter, Archbishop of Cin cinna ti, delivered the 195 1 Commencement address.

Edmond (Chief ) Toscani, former fiery field general for the University of Dayton football Flyer , h a been na路med line coach according to an announcement by the R ev. George J. R enneker, S.M., president, U.D. Toscani, who was graduated from U.D: in June, 1949, played qua rterback for both his present bo s, Joe Gavin, head coach and H a rry Ba ujan, Athletic Director. 路The new Flyer line bo s, who succeeds R alph McGehee now with the pro Green Bay Packers, is 27. Toscani entered U.D. in 1942 after graduation from South Catholic High School in Philadelphia. H e entered service in 1943 a nd served with the A.rmy's 88th Divi ion in orth Africa, France, and Italy. H e holds the Purple H eart from wounds suffered in Ita ly. H e was discharged in November, 1945, and entered U.D. in F ebrua ry, 1946. . The following three years the southpaw passer quarterbacked the Flyers :on offense a nd played a linebacker post on defense. Aft<;! r路 graduation from U.D. with a bachelor of science degree in education, Toscani pent a hort period of tirrie with the New York Bulldogs, pro football team. In the fa ll of '49, however, he entered T em ple University in Philadelphia and received his master degree in June of 1950. While studying. at T emple h e ta ught and coached at South Catholic High School. Since Jun e of 1950, he has been a probation and parole officer in D ayton .
