From atop a small hill we vjew the pa&sing of time. Somewhaf apart, we watch as man moves through his exist ence. The joys and sorrows tha t beset the world seem remote to our hill althovgh we know our point of vantage is but a prel ude to an adventure in fhe world .
Thus we cherIsh Ihe memories of an academic life as we move from this abandon to take 1he worldly responsibilities th rust upon us. Let -this book be a fiber from which we can weave the wa rm memories of our college days.
dedicat A true leader must have the power to command men and yet remain human. He must be human and superhuman. That a man can resolve his power of leadership with his human nature is indeed worthy of praise, but a man further resolving his leadership with the stark simplicity of the priesthood is truly great. A man of such resolution is the sixteenth president of the University of Dayton, the Very Reverend Andrew L. Seebold. A son of the Blue Grass, Father Seebold graduated from U.D. in 1924. He was ordained to the priesthood at Fribourg, Switzerland, ten years later. Receiving his doctorate from the Catholic University of America, he moved to the presidency of Cathedral Latin School in Cleveland. In 1953 Father Seebold was inaugurated. president of the University of Dayton. Since his commencement of office Father Seebold has been a constant source of progress. With dynamic effort he has modified and innovated throughout the school. His presence has been felt in the construction of new buildings, introduction of new policies, and an entirely new attitude toward education. Here then we dedicate this book in humble gratitude to Father Andrew L. Seebold, who as leader of our hilltop, has bestowed his human persorality on the entire University.

the drill field stand two symbols of contemporary U.D. The new Science Hall and Wohlleben Hall represent a revolution in education. Combining the talents of an excellent faculty with these new buildings the University of Dayton moves to the front as one of the finest colleges of science in the country. Our new buildings do not merely represent progress in the

our
t o p field of science education, they are a prediction of tomorrow's U.O. The University has plans for a new activities center and a new school of business. With these plans the University will be able to meet any future educational challenge. We congratulate the College of Science and the entire University for a progressive attitude in building a new U.D. on our hilltop.

student council The projects of the Studenl Council for Ihe year 1958-1959 were summed up in a stalemenl by the presidenl, John Messenger. II is his finn belief thet lhe organizalion has definitely lived up 10 the studenl's expectations end accomplished the goals which it set up at the beginning of lhe term. Basically, the council has conlinued along the lines that were delermined by previous organizations. John believes that even more has been i:ccomplished, particularly the filling of the gap between the student and the administration . Besides the regular routine work, the council has promoted several new projects. There has been set up a tentative athletic program that deals with a greater participation in campus intramural sports. And, of course, there are the plans for the Spring Week. This year it was greater than ever, including lecture series, field day, BermOOa shorts day, a jazz concert featuring Stan Kenton, and terminating with the crowning of the king and queen at the Senior Farewell dance. Another projecl not to be forgollen is the Big Four Inter路collegiate Commillee. This is a unique organization on campus level. All in all, il is the thought of the organization's officers and the .tudent body itself, that the Student Council has done a good job in governing their campus this year.

the marching band
THE MARCHING BAND AND COEDS Football is the paramount activity during the fall season at U D. And with the coming of this event, there is a bustling activity in the band room. For it has become traditional to see the performance of the combined unit of the Band and Coeds at half-time ceremonies. The color of their uniforms and the enthusiasm of the march reflect the spirit of the student body. The Coeds, led by drum major, Tom Whitt, are perfecting the precision step. The appearances of the group have been distinguished in other events outside activities connected with U D. One case in particular is the show they put on at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The half-time parades and marches at this professional Cleveland Browns-New York Giants football game featured the Marching Band and Coeds. Most of their feats have been publicized or televised, and certainly they will always share a part of the U D student's memories.

the dayton flyer In the four short years since Jocko Hussong revamped the University newspaper and the first issue of the "Dayton Flyer" appeared, many fine things have sprung from suite 111-112, Liberty Hall. This tradition continued to 1959 when Mr. Eugene Schill and his staff presented a year of "Innovation." New columns, poignant editorials and keenly perceptive articles provoked a reexamination of cultural and literary views on the "Hilltop." This year will undoubtedly mark a journalistic transition at U D. Congratulations, then, to Gene Schill , the editors, and the entire staff of the "Dayton Flyer" for their effort and persistence in the producing of one of the truly remarkable publications on any campus.

university players "The University Players have, in the past two years, changed their policy of doing 'iust drama' to doing drama of a classical stature . . . , This seaSOn the Players took on their most ambitious program. The success or failure of the productions depends on, as always, audience reception, The first seledion, Juno and the Paycock, is a clc.:ssic of ils lime and the universal aspects contained therein maintain its endurance. Besides
being a beautiful character study, it is probably the epitome of tragedy of cur time. Richard III, the second production, was a trial from beginning to end, The organization is not of sufficient strength to carry this undertaking with all of its strenuous fecets, Considered in this aspect, the produdion was not bad , , ' It was never great, ncr did it live up to the expectations of the cast or the director. At press time of the yearbook, the Players were iust entering into what has become a tradition, their annual musical comedy. The Boy Friend, a satire on musicals of the 'roaring twenties: was approached with a sense of relief and anticipation, The complete abandonness of the play itself was well appreciated. ' . . I t is the firm belief of the Players that there is a sufficient supply of 'good drama' that should be presented without having to revert to poor or inconsequential material. In conclusion,

The Flyer NIT hopes now loomed brighter but it seemed as if the prospective spring Irip f O New York depended on r"a o')ably impressive wins over Duquesne ard Louisville.
Dayton started off badly against Du· quesne as Bob Siobodnick and Bernie Matthews combined to overcome the Flyers. Phil Dubensky came dff the bench to fire in six straight shots but all for nought as the Daytonians fell, 65-58. The revenge motive was a strong in· centive for the Flyers to bounce back against Louisville and the home team seemed well on their way to victory afler building up a 27·18 lead. But Louisville's fine outside shooting broke up the Flyers zone a d the Cardinals came away with a 58·54 victory.
