A campus: 150 acres, split in half by five miles of city. Twenty major buildings: eighteen here, two there. And another one growing, clawing out the ground for footing and laddering up, boxing off so many cubic feet of sky for office space : to house the business school. People : 2200 here, 450 there, 3350 between and beyond. An awesome debt; stand on the sidewalk directly in front of the Union, heading east, and look from left to right, and you rea lize wh짜: every building in sight, clear out to Stuart Ha!!, has yet to see its seventh birthday. In the last four years the acreage doubled, the number of students jumped 50 per cen t, the construction barely kept pace. Growth: an organic process characterized by pain and confusion. For UD, a small school. growth is a survival trait, achieved at great cost.

But eve rything eithe r lives or dies, fo r the re is no middle ground, so that what does not grow, withers. Thus the physical growth of the universi t y de mands a corre sponding maturation on t he part of t he administrators, faculty, and staff: p rofessional , mental, and spiritual maturation. For every school must continua ll y re-examine and revise its purpose s and its curriculum in order t o ma intain its relevance to the world in which it functions. Napoleon said a nation, to be successful, should change its tactics every ten years. But universities are concerned with a broader universe than was Bonapa rte, and the universe changes quicker now. The burden of response to these changes rests with the permanent population of the university, the faculty, staff, and administration.

5

6

If these people fail, then their university is no more than a filing cabinet for huge volumes of statistics, historical facts, documented trivia-for all that is publicly verifiable, agreed upon, and "objective. " And consequently dead . There is a place for data-knowledge-in the university. But the university is primarily a market place for new ideas, a testing ground for new concepts, a training place for students. A place to grow, and to begin to ask questions, and to begin to begin to think of answers. If it is the business of the future to be dangerous, it is the business of the present to make ready. And this is the function of the university: to encourage the making ready, the growing ..

DAI The university is a growing place, a dreaming place, a learning place. Here students first fully realize the implicc;itions of the fact that there's a world outside themselves, first begin to see with another's eyes, first truly confront one another, first truly confront themselves. The university is a place where expression is a prime concern, for without e xpression there is no communication, without communication there is no education. The Dayton Art In stitute is involved chiefly 路with the intangibles tangibly e xpressed. Here students explore their worlds with their hands, refine and redefine their visions, practice the techniques of expre ssion that wordlessly say more than words can.

the Mount Knowledge without aim 1s a loaded shotgun waiting to kill whoever can 't tell one end of the barrel from the other. The university is a place where students find for themselves the directions they wish to take. Some students already know. They come to the university not to discover where to go, but to make ready to do what must be done when they get there. They know the doing is in their hands, and the going is in God's. Mount St. John is more than a dormitory with chapel attached ; it is the beginning of a way of living . The brothers sleep and eat here , yes, and pray. And play football, and study, and work. And commute to UD. And between classes plug a few more ti!es into the appropriate places in the mosaic they're making for the library. Every brother is busy, always, not just for the sake of keeping occupied, but because there is more to do than can be done. The brothers are supposed to spend four years at the Mount, but they don't really plan on it. Often they're needed as teachers by the end of the third year, so they waste no time.

18

We live on the edges of ourselves, and things are as we have sensed them: a loft of new hay smells just so, the stars look as we have seen them, and our separate universes stretch to the furthest reaches of our fingertips, their separate shapes those of our own skins. For these are our bounds: what we can smell and taste, see and hear and touch; these are the frontiers of our surety, the walls behind which we live, the gates of our solitary camps. What lies within these gates we think we know; what lies beyond is strange, and frightening: Here be Dragones, troll-tale territory. And fairyland, too, filled brimful with wonders, and a little bit magical. And sometimes, somehow, something magic slips through the gates to stand dean-footed in the mud of our commonplaces: the sum of the squares, the brief perfection of a rose, the subjunctive imperfect of connaitre. And we grasp it. And then we know the walls for what they are, we see the smallness of our places, and we must go out.

19

So naked we come, a little scared, and frighten ourselves with each other; and sometimes we find dragons, but mostly we find confusion. There is much, much more to be known than we can think of knowing, far more ways to knowing than we can take. For each of us is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature. Until we get outside ourselves, and see that the world is wider than our reach, deeper than we can stand, and that it goes in directions we can barely see. Our customs don't govern-don't even approximate-and must be laid aside, and we leave ourselves no walls, open gates.

20

21

So we ask questions. Evenhially, the questions we ask are the ones everyone asks: who am I, where did I come from, whither bound, why is the going, what is God ? These are the Ultimate Questions-mark the capitals, for when someone so titles them for you, he may try to give you answers. And it is the essence of ultimate questions that they are unanswerable except in personal terms.

22

23

So that the great deal to be reaped from books remains merely data once removed , opinions second-h1nd, filtered inspiration. We must pick it up and touch it, shape it and try it, to give it meaning. Our hands must make the measurements and run the trials, to give the information immediacy and value beyond that of marks on paper. The opinions must be tested against those of the people around us; the inspiration is vital, alive, only insofar as we can pass it on.

24

25

This is labor. This is a parturition: delivering ourselves from our shells, coming out from behind our walls to sample and test the world, and then to tell others. This is learning. And it shocks at first, to bare yourself to your neighbor. But this is the heart of the educative process: the confrontation of minds. It can be accomplished by writing things down, by painting pictures on windows; but mostly there are the bull sessions, the committee meetings, the conferences and dances, and people groping with words for each other's souls across a cluttered cafeteria table, and the student trying to learn by trying to teach. And slowly we come to realize that, to begin to answer those questions, we shall have to do this all our lives; that, beginning to learn, we have begun o.ne long birthing.

26

27

28

That the answers to the questions don't depend upon the separate paths we take to knowledge, but upon our commonplaces, after all: awareness of our fragility, our brevity, our infinite, restless curiosity, and bullheadedness; our huge capacity to be proud and to fail, to love while yet alone, to be each our own master, and yet not. Communication is the he~rt of learning, and it is the commonplaces that make communication both necessary and possible.

32

My dear Graduates, Your editors of this 1965 DA YTONIAN explained to me that their theme for this yearbook was to recall for you the fact that unlike many of your fellow high school graduates who did not go on to college, you have been privileged to have an extra four years in which to prepare yourself for life. During this period of your life your intellectual acumen and physical stamina are at their height. These are indeed your best learning years. It has pleased Almighty God to bestow on you special talents which he expects you to cultivate and then use for the betterment and welfare of your fellow man. Because of your intellectual qualities you probably have a greater ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate evidence in the pursuit of truth. In your chosen academic discipline you now have a special competence which gives you a depth of learning on which you will probably base your life's career. Perhaps you have already learned that others look up to you and respect your opinion. They presume that you have an understanding and evaluation of the world in which we live, and that you will help them to appreciate it better. As we told you many, many times, we hope that during your years here at the University, you have developed a deep conviction of your faith that will give you a unified view of life and an awareness of the Church as continuing Christ's redemptive action ar.J a clear perception of your role as a member of the Church. As the years go on and you have the opportunity to integrate the many things that you learned in college, my hope and prayer is that you will be decisive in confronting life, courageous and hopeful in exercising initiative, yet loyal to legitimate authority, which is usually in a position to see things much more clearly than the private individual. This will demand a positive-minded patience, but it is neither passivity or abandonment of ideals. In response to the Christian vocation revealed in Scripture and Sacrament, and specified by the temporary need:; and potential of the Church, may you always be personally dedicated to Christ and generously committed to crea+ive involvement and leadership of the intellectual, social, cultural, political. and religious life of this world. May you have a balanced appraisal of reality, especially of the material and the bodily, a recognition of the power and danger of evil-and yet a reverence of the goodness of creation and human achievement. This life that we live should give evidence that the first thing in our life is the love and service of God. May everything you do in the years to come contribute toward that goal. In no fuller sense would you be living up to the motto of the University of Dayton-"For God and Country." May God's blessing and love be always with you. Sincerely,

Very Reverend Raymond A. Roesch, S.M. President

STUDENT COUNCIL

From the beginning, from the election of officers, this year promised to be different. It was. There were the usual Councilsponsored dances and concerts; the basketba ll ticket situation was no more satisfactory this year than before; and as far as governmental cliques go, they went: only the names had changed. The new Council was relatively inexperienced, and with th e assignment of certain functions to committe es of the new Union, the Council felt obliged to fight to preserve ancient privileg es. In so doing, they began to reach a definition of their true position and function. A nd they began to do some work. PLAYERS

Opening his second season, Raymond Mullins, speech and drama professor, produced a bril liant interprstation of OCJets' "The Country Girl." The underplay and dramatic tones of the script came to life on stage with the vividness and finish of a professional performance. Closing out the winter schedule with "The Rivals," Mr. Mullins' perceptive eye blended the unusua l synthesis of contemporary staging with Victorian humor and satire. Viewers saw the immortal Mrs. Malaprop once again come to life in all the pag eantry of the theatre .

Pla yers : Brian N olan, Robert Killian , Nick D'Orsi , Jim Cain , Pat Riordan , Paula Reder, Su e Rap ier, Bill Aaron, Bob Barrett, Joanne Ratte, Sandy Clark, Kathy Keyes , Wal t Dicastro, Judy Ru eth, Ann Sheridan.

President: Bill Halbert.

90

Patrick Gilvary began his eighth season with Saroyan's "The Time of Your Life, " a mood play setting the scene of war's impending shadow. Mr. Gilvary's experience in such productions as "Guys and Dolls, " " Beyond the Horizon, " and "The Would-Be-Gentlemen, " made this latest play possible. Directing a production involving nearly one hundred, and making the first musical to be presented on campus in five years a proud reality, evidence Mr. Gilvary's versatility in handling not only comedies and d ramas, but musicals as well.

Clockwise: Mary Ann Finegan, Social Chairman, Pam Hecht, Secretary-Treasurer, R obert Killian, Vice President.

Hopes were high in the Dayton camp as the 1964 version of the Fighting Flyers prepared for the tough season ahead . More depth and talent than has been present on the UD scene in many years was assembled by Head Coach Pete Ankney . With nowhere to go but up, the Flyer faithful anxiously awaited the beginning of the season. Hopes grew even greater as the Fighting Flyers initiated their campaign by trouncing St. Joseph's of Indiana, 41-0. Coach Ankney emptieQ his bench as six different Flyers scored touchdowns. The Flyer mentor was especially pleased by the play of this line, both in blocking and tackling. Perhaps the most pivotal contest of the season was the second week meeting with Cincinnati. The Bearcats, eventual winners of the Missouri Valley Conference title, were expected to simply outclass theFlyers and walk to an easy victory. For the first half, however, the game was all Red and Blue, with the exception of a fluke 82-yard scoring pass by C incy.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

130

Dayton held a I0-7 lead entering the fourth quarter, but could not hold off a Bearcat surge led by their tremendous quarterback, Brig Owens. Cincy pushed across two tallies in the final seven minutes to down Dayton 20-10. The spirit of the Fighting Flyers was noticeably lessened by the heartbreaking defeat at Cincinnati. In their next two outings, Dayton was drubbed by Bowling Green, 35-0, and downed by Louisville, 21-7, to sport a 1-3 mark entering the Homecoming contest.

131

This year's Homecoming opponent was Abilene Christian, the powerhouse of the Texas small college elevens. Dayton had not won a Homecoming game since the 1957 season, and the Fighting Flyers were hungry for a victory in front of the alumni. The contest was hand fought all the way, with the difference being the passing of quarterback Joe Rudolph. Rudolph hit on touchdown tosses of 35 yards to Bill Spear and 34 yards to Chuck McElligott to carry the Flyers to a 21-14 win.

132

The game following the Homecoming victory marked a complete turnabout on the part of.the Flyers. Playing what Coach Ankney termed "our poorest effort of the season, " Dayton dropped a 21-6 decision to the Detroit Titans in what was to be the last meeting of the two UDs. Following the season , Detroit decided to drop intercollegiate football. The Ohio University Bobcats completely outplayed the Flyers in defeating them, 24-0, at Athens. Returning to the friendly confines of Baujan Field, the Fighting Flyers battled Xavier scoreless for 55 minutes. Marty Coates' one-yard plunge put the Flyers in a 7-0 lead at that point, but XU managed two quick scores in the last two minutes to take a 12-7 verdict from the Flyers. The annual tussle with Miami provided more heartbreak for the Flyers. Seventeen point underdogs entering the fray, Dayton stayed in conte.ntion throughout, and only a weird hop on a punt that struck Tom Bushman on the back of his leg cost the Flyers a win. In the 27-21 loss, Rudolph outplayed Miami 's highly touted field general, Ernie Kellerman .

The season finale found the Flyers ending on a happy note with a 16-1 I win over Kent State. Dayton built up a 16-0 halftime lead and had to hold off a final half Kent surge to record the victory. Following the season, awards were given to Micky Bitsko, Most Valuable Player and Flyer of the Year (chosen by the student body through a poll conducted by the Flyer News) ; Jim Blabaugh, Outstanding Lineman; Roosevelt Mell, Junior Class Award; and Tom Bushman, John L. MacBeth Award for the top Scholar-Athlete. Coach Ankney noticed marked improvement in this year's team, although the season was not as productive as he had hoped for. Still it was Dayton's best gridiron season in five years. The pressures of his position were too much for the amiable Coach Ankney, and he stepped down as Flyer mentor in mid-December so he could spend more time with his family. Following Ankney's resignation, Director of Athletics Tom Frericks started a wide search for the man tO replace the former Fairmont mentor at the Flyer helm. The man chosen was John McVay, an assistant for Duffy Daugherty at Michigan State the past three seasons. McVay brings with him determination and a great knowledge of Ohio high school football in an effort to return the Flyers to winning ways on the gridiron again.

135

FROSH FOOTBALL The frosh Flyers, outweighed but never outfought all season, posted an extremely respectable 4-1 slate through the season's campaign. A fast and mobile team, the Frosh were victorious in the first four contests of the season against Hanover 25-0, Miami 13-6, Xavier 8-7, and Cincinnati 40-8, before losing a heartbreaker in the season finale to Ohio U. , 34-26, when a last minute drive fell short.

Thomas J. Frericks Director of Athletics The 1964 season brought to UD its first full time soccer coach . He is John Schleppi, a graduate of Ohio State University in 1961, and former OSU freshman soccer coach . Schleppi had served last year as an assistant to the then Flyer mentor, John Wiesler. Schleppi faced a task of molding a winning team out of a squad that contained only four returning lettermen. The squad worked long and hard for its opening game against Cedarville on September 19. The season 's premiere was a success. Sparked by two goals from sophomore Tommy Dee, the Flyer booters turned back the Cedarmen, 4-1 . Dee received scoring help from Elie Saleeby and Maurice Nieto, each of whom scored one time. The Hoosiers from Indiana handed the Flyers their first defeat of the season the next week by downing them 5-2. Schleppi was disappointed by the play of his backfield men in this contest, though he had praise for Dee and Luciano Crusi, the Dayton goal-getters. The booters were shut out by Earlham College, 3-0, in their next outing, but bounced back with a convincing 3-0 defeat of Bowling Green. In the contest with the Falcons, Dee again scored twice and Crusi added the final tally. Coach Schleppi felt that his team had jelled best in the Bowling Green game. A third period goal by Saleeby gave Dayton a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wilmington. Leading a fine defensive effort by the Flyers were goalie Jack Hess, and backfieldmen Bernie Harawa and George Wiedermer. Two straight losses followed the Wilmington con quest, including a defeat in the game that Coach Schleppi probably wanted to win the most. Ohio State ventured down from Columbus to top the Flyer booters and prevent Schleppi from having the satisfaction of defeating his alma mater. Perhaps. the worst Flyer effort of the year was against Ohio University. Playing without Gene Schildknecht and Maurice Nieto, the regular fullbacks, Dayton was trounced 7-2 by the Bobcat booters. The season ended on a happy note when the Flyers bounced back to bury Wilberforce, 7-3 , and end their season with a 4-4 mark. Crusi led the attack, netting three goals in the contest. Dee led the team with seven goals, while Crusi kicked home five. Overall, Dayton netted 19 goals to 23 scores by their opponents. Coach Schleppi expressed pleasure with the players and their willingness to work. He noted that with only two men graduating from this year's squad, U D's soccer fortunes could very well skyrocket next season.

The University of Dayton hockey team , complete with a new home arena, continued to draw more and mo re interest from the student body this season. The kers played their home ga mes at t he new Hara Arena t his sea son instead of at the Troy Arena , which UD hockey t eams used to call home. Coach Walt DeAnna 's crew got off to a high-flying start, crushing the newly-formed Miami University squad , 19-0. Three of the Flyer skaters notched "hat tricks," or three goals in one game. Pete Oatis, who opened scoring in the first two minutes of play, Fay Jung, and Nick DeFusco each tallied a trio of goals against the Redskins. In the opening game , frosh goal tender Jerry Martin was called on to make ~nly 11 saves as the Flyers COrT)pletely controlled the, play. Coach DeAnna -..yas pleased by the team's play, especially in the first period when the Flyers jumped out to a I0-0 lead. He said , however, that three strong periods, and not only one, would be necessary if the Flyers had any hopes of stopping some of their stronger opponents.

..

Hillsdale of Michigan provided the Flyers with their first stiff competition of the year. Although the defen se became ragged and the Michiganders managed five tallies, Dayton still skated off with a victory . The defending champion of the Mid West College Hockey Association, Denison University, handed the skaters their first setback of the season by a 9-5 margin. The Flyers stayed with the stronger Denison team for two periods , keeping them deadlocked at 2-2. However; a defensive collapse by the Flyers in the final period paved the way to the Den 's win .

The Ohio State " Puckeyes" continued the Flyers on their losing ways by topping them , 8-5 , at Columbus. Dayton started wel l, and held a 5-3 lead after two periods of action. For the second time in as many games, the third period proved costly to the Flyers, as OSU pushed the puck past goalie Martin five times in that final stanza. The skatin' Daytons were hampered by seven pen alties called again st them in the last period . Coach DeAnna regrouped his forces for the next contest against Fenn College. Ralph Cardillo, the skating theology instructor, notched a " hat trick" in leading the Flyers to a 12-9 victory over Fenn. Dave Guyer, the team 's leading lamplighter, Bud Newberry and De~u sco each chipped in with a pair of tallies in the conquest. Martin was erratic in the nets, making 34 saves but letting nine sbots elude him . The biggest contest of the season was the rematch with Ohio State at Hara Arena. The team worked to improve its defense in an attempt to repay the " Puckeyes " the favor they gave Dayton in their first meeting. A student skating party held before the game provided the Flyers with their biggest home crowd of the season.

INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL Wild and wooly action was the keynote of intram(Jral football activity in '64. With 22 teams entering into the activity, each playing a schedule of ten games, there was plenty of action on the practice football field during the weekends. The two league leaders, each with perfect records, the Rejects and the Headhunters, met to decide the championship at Baujan Field just before Thanksgiving. Using a crushing defense and quick pa ssing attack, the Rejects took the IM crown 28-0.

INTRAMURAL VOIJ.EYBALL

The OH! NO's were on everyone's lips in this year's IM volleyball especially when the opposing teams found out they were scheduled to play them . INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL Under the constant and watchful eye of Herb Dinti man , the intramural program at U D has grown to tremendo us size. This year 64 teams and approximately 700 male students took part in the activity. Top teams in league play were the Raggedy Cadets, Drifters, Sports, Holly Rollers, Tuna Tigers, Unbeatables, and Hilltoppers. Play was fast and often frantic but the students expressed their satisfaction at th e program by playing a total of 1,350 games.

Coach Don "Mickey" Donaher entered his first season as head coach of the Fighting Flyers with a gleam of optimism in his eyes. With returning veterans captain Bob Sullivan, big Hank Finkel, Henry Burlong, and Bill Cassidy, plus a host of talented sophs, Coach Donaher had good reason to be optimistic about his team's season. Strong across the front line with Sullivan, Finkel, and Burlong, the Flyers' main problem lay in the finding of a pair of guards that could play consistently good ball. In the opening game against Niagara , Jack Warrell and Denny Papp got the starting nods, but it was the fine play of Cassidy and rookie Dave lnderrieden that carried the Flyers to a 95-64 win. A last second basket by Burlong gave the Flyers their second victory, a hardfought 73-71 conquest of the tall Eastern Kentucky Maroons. Finkel was unstoppable, pouring in 35 points.

150

VARSITY BASKETBALL

151

The talent-laden Miami Red skins handed the Flyers their first setback of the season by downing Donoher's lads, 95-88, at O xford. Finkel again was magnificent, tallying 33, but the overall depth of the Miami squad proved too much for Dayton. After a win over Idaho .State, the Flyers travelled to Lexington, Kentucky, to take part in the University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament. In the first round, the Flyers ran into a red-hot Illinois team and fell, I04-86, despite another great performance by Finkel. In the consolation game, Dayton tripped West Virginia, 71-67, to take third place honors in the tourney that was won by the Illini . Army invaded the Fieldhouse and tried to freeze the Flyers to death. Playing deliberately and going for only the best shots, the Cadets held a 19-18 lead at the half. Burlong led a second half comeback that enabled the Flyers to record a 41-33 triumph .

152

153

The Flyers ran off three victories in a row, downing Dartmouth, Akron, and Xavier. During this spurt, a new starter was uncovered in the ever-changing backcourt. Gene Klaus, t he soph from Delphos, turned in fine performances in each of these games to a ssure himself of a starting berth . However, a problem wa s then raised in the forecourt as Burlong was declared scholastically ineligible for basketball. Thu s the Flyers lost their second best scorer and rebounder. What followed was three straight losses. Shuffling personnel to try to fill the Burlong gap, Coach Donoher saw his charges fall to Detroit, 76-72 , in overtime. Jim Wannemacher, another soph , was inserted in Burlong's post 路 for the Cincinnati game. The Flyers played tremendously for the first half and led the Bearcats, 43-31 at intermission. Cincy came back strong in the second half, hitting 77 per cent of their shots, to garner a 76-65 decision.

154

DePaul 's Blue Demons added to the Flyers ' woes by dumping them, 63-59 , for Dayton's first Fieldhouse loss of the season. Both Donoher and DePaul coach Ray Meyer expressed dissatisfaction over the play of their respective teams in this contest. The Flyers returned to the winning ways with a 96-80 defeat of Chattanooga. Finkel tallied his personal high of 36 points in this contest, while Sullivan added 23 and Wannemacher 15. Warrell forged back into the guard picture with a fine second half showing. The Louisville Cardinals were next to test by a 83-78 margin. Warrell started due to a foot injury to Klaus and tossed in 18 points to augment Finkel's 31 . A full-court press by the Cards in the second half almost carried them to victory. Dayton added another win over the Lions from Lyola of Los Angeles by a 89-71 路 margin. Finkel notched 30, Sullivan 21, and Warrell 15 to lead the Flyers' taming of the pesky Lions. Rematches with Xavier, Miami, Louisville, and DePaul, plus contests with Lyola of Chicago and Memphis State, spiced the second half of the Flyers' schedule.

UD AT THE NCAA An inspired team and last second foul shots against Ohio University at Bowling Green, Kentucky enabled the Flyers to get a shot at number one rated Michigan. The Wolverines used their superior speed and height to overrun the smaller Dayton team 98 -71. Although Flyer Gene Klaus held All-American Cazzie Russell to 14 points, fellow All-American Bill Buntin had a field -day with 26 counters. Hank Finkel made a good showing aga inst the big Michigan team, cashing in for 22 points. Dayton salvaged some of their prestige, conquering regular season foe, DePaul, 75-69, for third place without the services of Finkel for a large part 路of the game. Hank sat out 17 minutes of the contest because ~f fouls but still collected 26 points. Dayton was represented in the championship game, not by the basketball team, but by the Flyerettes, the first time any such organization has ever appeared in this tournament. The loss to Michigan did not dim the brillancy of Don Donoher's first season, a 22-7 resounding success.

Featuring the most talked about freshman player since Roger Brown, and a couple all-staters, the freshmen rolled to the best record since the days of Chmielewski and Brown. The flashy frosh that drew most of the attention was Rudy Waterman, a high scoring guard from New York. Also from the Empire state came center Glinder Torain, whom people already saw helping Hank Finkel out next year from the forward spot. Rounding out the high scoring trio was Donny May who impressed with his shooting and especially his rebounding. Bobby Jo Hooper and either Richie Fox or Dale Jones rounded out the starting five that broke a hundred on many occasions and defeated the highly touted Jones Bros., as well as Xavier, Cincinnati, and Miami.

ACTIVITIES

Three or more, with a myriad of excmes for being there; this is where the action is: parties, philosophy panels, plays, dances, campaigns. With campaign ribbons: sprained toes, sore thumbs, bleary eyes and coffee hangovers, cot"Sages and empty kegs, and talk. Always talk. At the meetings, the dances, the bull sessions. Some growth will occur, in some way; there are those who will seek it and those who will wait to be songht by it.

THE WAY THINGS ARE

When the 2000 new freshman faces appeared at U.D. this year, a new face peered back at them. The J.F.K . Memorial Un ion wh ich opened officially on September 6, became the initiation site for many frosh.

162

The Goon Squad helped the " Beanie Set" become a real part of the university by acquainting them with the rules and regulations. A familiar sight this week was the b lue pail containing gum and candy. The pails were clutched anxiously by be:inie-wearers on the lookout for a Goon with a sweet tooth . The freshie could be asked at any time to relinquish goodies from his pail.

\ Other torture favorites of the upperclassmen included proposals by fre shman girls to eli gible (and not so eligible) young men, and the celestial crooning of the Fight Song and Alma Mater upon request. The excellent recreational facilities at the Student Union made possible several organized pool and bowling tournaments. The week's activities also included various dances, book discussions, a style show and a hootenanny.

163

164

Student approval of the week's activities was apparent. Par路 ticipation in the festivities and attendance at the events promised a year of heightened school spirit. The concert under the stars, the movies in the Little Theatre, and in Wohlleben Hall, a Hawaiian Luau and a new-fangled Ma ss-hootenanny hymns-rounded out the week's functions.

165

"A Night in Camelot" began the whirl of major university dances. A king, a queen and a court of eight reigned in the Union ballroom. Joyce Cornyn and John Flynn, Sharon Hoefling, and Pete Dilworth, Chris May and Joe Mari no, Margie Blake and Al Mclaughlin made up the court. Jenny Verkamp and Jeff Sullivan were king and queen.

166

Dick Rossetti, the court jester, and Head Goon Marty Flahive, the master of ceremonies, made the dance a fitting climax to orientation week.

THE SIXTY-HOUR PARTY

A hectic weekend, an excuse for dropping grades. And girls. And guys. And money. Ship in the out-of-town girl friend for two and a half days; introduce her to your roommates; show her the campus. Dinner and a movie, and an hour at floatbuilding that stretched till 4 in the morning . Hold her hand at the football game, though it wasn't really cold at all. The dances and parties till dawn and the earliest Mass. Quiet Sunday. After she's gone you'll live on peanut butter sandwiches till Thanksgiving.

CAMPAIGN

They look good when they ride past. They better: the re 's forty or two hundred people in the audience who stayed up the last seventy hours making posters and pictures and ironing clothes and shining shoes and polishing cars for them. Some people never go to bed from the time the candidates are first announced until the last midterm exam is over. They consume staggering quantities of coffee, and slosh when they walk. They move from here to there, half because they must and half on the chance of

bumming a cigarette in between. Their tongues taste like the insides of an old feather pillow. They go to class only when they must sleep. They live surrounded by coffee stains and dirty ashtrays, halffinished posters, and visions of glory. This one's for Skip.

170

And then it's over. In five minutes the queen is announced, the attendant named, and they have the last hurrah. Royalty established, the knights pledge honorable battle. The captain's shadow stands ten yards tall as he promises victory. And tomorrow . . .

171

Friday night is floatbuilding night. So is Saturday morning. Even so, one or two of the floats weren't finished by parade time. Lots of people showed up at Gentile, but it turned cold that night. The engineers volunteered to decorate the stadium, but half the credit goes to Marycrest.

172

CUSS, CRY A LITTLE, AND PRAY A LOT, IS HOW YOU DO IT

The route was a little different from that used before. It simplified things a bit. But not much . There were more units than ever before, and they tended to get out of order, slip out of line , arrive late, and fall in backward s. But the walkietalkies worked , the cops were cooperative, and the weather turned warm. Some marchers wound up on the library lawn with blistered feet, but nobody rained on Bill Mooney' s parade.

173

October 17: everyone is a hero. Bitsko's punts drop deep in Abilene Christian territory. Will's tackles make fumbles. Rudolph wedges for one score and passes to Spear for another. But Abilene's backs all run I00 in less than I0, and each time they scamper and smash to tie the game. So Rudolph flares to McElligott, who runs 34 yards remembering his last three games, and that's the winning touchdown afte r Bukky breaks Abilene's last threat. Except for the Texans, everyone's happy; and Chuck goes around grinning for three days.

The Serendipity Singers performed October 2 at the Fieldhouse. The program featured such songs as their wellknown "Crooked Little Man" and "Frankie and Johnny."

CONCERT

177

The Players' first production in the Little Theatre, "The Time of Your Life, " played to surprisingly small houses. The work explores the effects of contemporary reality on the ordinary people of the world. The play is a comedy, but it moves always under the shadows of war.

178

THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE

179

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Un ion was a fulcrum for controversy all year. Some people compared its appearance to that of a terraced cracker box, and found the Union wanting. Others were more concerned about the arresting statue of the late President. But with so many people using the Union, there was more controversy inside than out. One of the small, quiet meetings of Dialogues, a small, quiet group, mushroomed into a three-hour open debate and impromptu sing-along.

Ellie Ku.-tz, Prog.-am Directo.-

180

When people weren't arguing, they were watching television o r listening to music or shooting pool or going to one of the dozen s of dances. Even the Brothers dropped in.

WHERE THE ACTION WAS

181

I

There were folk dances and sing-along Masses, and bowling tournaments. Mostly, there were opportunities to meet other folks. The Union became what it was intended to become: the hub of university activity.

182

1965 A.D. March 13-Egypt's falcon met Rome's eagle. Cleopatra came to UD, and Roman Legions bowed, fountains sang, and togaed Romans feasted at a banquet the likes of which U D had never seen. A golden eagle spread its wings over the Royalty, and the ballroom was transformed into a red-carpeted throne room, with pillars, statues, banners, and peacock feathers. A cortege of 35 Egyptian and Roman Royalty welcomed the Queen of the Nile, borne by six strong litter bearers, and 300 guests thrilled to the dancing of the Dayton Civic Ballet, Central State College Dancers, magicians, jugglers, and wrestlers, reminiscent of old Rome. Servants bore trays of Shish-ka-bob, chicken, cheeses, olives and breads. Tables were laden with succulent fruits, and fountains gurgled champagne punch. This was the culminating effort of the year for the Union Activities Organization-an evening the whole campus will not soon forget.

183

LETTERMEN IN CONCERT

Three of the entertainment world 's most vital performers appeared December 4 at the Field house. The trio, Jim, Tony, and Bob, followed the Young Folks' brief appearance. An amazing mood was created as the singers poured forth renditions of "Come Back Silly Girl," "When I Fall in Love ," a medley from " West Side Story, " "Love Is a Many-Splendored Th ing," and others.

184

Encore after encore was requested and the group left to a standing ovation only when they could sing no more.

IN MEMORIAM On November 22, the first anniversary of President Kennedy's death, a Memorial Mass was celebrated in the Little Theater of the Kennedy Union. Sponsored by the Senior class and the Latin American Club, the Solemn High Mass was the first on campus to be said in English. Father Roesch and Father Barrett, UD president and vice president, were the celebrants.

DEBATE ON RIGHTISM The debate between Father Kelley and Mr. L. Brent Bozell was in essence a debate of liberal and conservative, a discussion that put responsible conservatism in a new light, in a place of reverence on the mantle of American political philosophy. It stirred earnest political and social discussion among students and thus must be considered a highlight of the academic year. Both participants presented their thesis very articulately and emphatically, making the program exciting for all present. The discussion was based on the assertions stated by Father Kelley in his pamphlet, "The Roots of Rightism."

193

HON. SIVERT A. NIELSON

The second program of the Un iversity Art Series featured the internationally famous statesman, Hi s Excellency Sivert A. Nielsen. Ambassador Nielsen is a permanent representative of Norway to the United Nations. His informative topic for the UD students was "The U.N. at the Crossroads." Nielsen has twice held the position of president of the Security Council, Director of NATO International Staff, and Under Secretary of the Defense for the Norwegian Ministry.

194

SENIOR ASSEMBLY Highlighting Senior Week was a rally for the graduating lettermen. The lone basketball player received a knitting award from Ma ster of Ceremonies Joe Dete. Coach Ankney introduced his gridders and each gave his feelings concerning his last college game . A speech by Father Wagner and the discovery of several "inside the locker-room jokes" added interest to the program.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direct~on of Dr. Paul Katz, made its fourth annual appearance at UD on November 18, as one of the highlights of the Art Series. The seventy-five piece orchestra presented one of the most stirring concerts ever -p-fesent~ on campus. Selections ranged from Beethoven's 4th Movement, 7th Symphony, to Richard Rodgers' Broadway hit, " Caro usel."

AARON AND MARY LOU KROSNICK

EMLYN WILLIAMS The works of Charles Dickens were personified by the noted ac.tor and playwright, Emlyn Williams, guest speaker at the University Arts Series on November 4. Costumed as Dickens, Williams presented excerpts from "A Tale of Two Cities" and "David Copperfield" among other selections in a celebrated performance which he has presented in England as well as America.

Two members of the faculty at Wittenberg University, Aaron and Mary Lou Krosnick, performed at UD in January at another of the Cameo Concerts. The award-winning piano-violin duo brought new appreciation and added to the cultural treasures of the student body. As a pianist, Mrs. Krosnick has been winning awards for her artistry since the age of 14, and has concerted across the nation . A violinist, Mr. Krosnick has had considerable experience in solo work, recitals, and orchestra concerts. He is concert master for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.

196

DAYTON CIVIC BALLET A return engagement to the University brought the Dayton Civic Ballet, which has gained a wide reputation for their artistic interpretation of a dance form that most students seldom have the opportunity to enjoy. Divided into three parts, the troupe presented Tchaikovsky's " The Nutcracker, " Act . II, as their first number. First organized in 1937, the Dayton Civic Ballet is now the second oldest regional ballet company in路 the United States.

197

MILITARY BALL

The first formal dance to be held in the Kennedy Union was the 6th annua l Military Ball, sponsored by the cadet brigade, on November 13, in the Presidential Ballroom . During the evening it wa s announced that Maddy Currie was elected as honorary cadet colo"nel of the brigade . The Jimmy May Orchestra provided music for the dance. Major General Sparrow from Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio, was the honored guest.

VARIETY SHOW

The 10th Annual Red and Blue Variety Show, sponsored by the UD Bands, and featuring a special 17 member stage band, enjoyed a three night performance run on January 21, 23, and 24. This year's program offered student entertainment by several veterans of the Red and Blue and quite a few newcomers, all under the guidance of Music Department Cha irman Maurice Reichard. The students based their song and dance presentation on the Broadway musicals " Bye Bye Bird ie," "Bells Are Ringing ," "Sound of Music," "Porgy and Bess," " The Music Man," and "The Desert Song."

A favorite half time interlude for the football games was the prec1s1on dancirfg of the famous and sometimes infamous marching coeds. Here they perform with the band under the direction of their captain, Joanne Woodman , while the band pla ys the National Anthem and the stands get into the true spirit of the footba II season.

A moment of peace and quiet for a busy student is not always easy to find. Here in the main chapel a student finds the time to do a bit of introspection and finding of himself with the calm light of the stained glass window.

JUNIOR PROM

206

Jane Kratovil reigned as queen at the 1965 iunior prom, January 22, at Wamplers Back Door. Formal attire added a special air of elegance to the dance, wh ich was entitled "Champagne Ball." Runners up for .prom queen who reigned with Jane were Ricki Broderick, Mary Jean Farley, and Nancy Stipher.

MARDI GRAS

210

One Friday in February an angel, a devil, a caveman, several gypsies, beatniks, babies with bottles, an organ grinder, and scores of animals entered the Presidential Ballroom. Therein they danced, laughed and consumed beer and puncn. This was the beginning of Mardi Gras.

211

THE BED RACE

A tremendous crowd showed up on a sunny Saturday afternoon for the bed race. The beds for the race were built and decorated by various on and offcampus organizations. Phi Kappa Mu won a prize for their "Jolly Green Giant," judged the best decorated bed in the parade . With the pilots dre;sed in nighties, and the pushers in pirate costumes, the race began. Accidents were numerous, and the course became littered with fragments from the beds. The sophomore class bed rallied to win the final heat. Delta Tau Nu was second, Phi Kappa Mu came in third, and Phi Beta Alpha ran fourth. 212

CASINO NIGHT

The money was printed on a m1meo machine, the house employees were engineers, and the girls were Flyerettes. But the excitement was there, the thrills were genuine, and more than one ill-starred gambler was seen to wander brokenly into the night, away from the clatter of dice and slip of cards, the shouts of big winners and the cries of "No more bets, ladies and gents, no more bets."

213

KINGSTON TRIO

214

The Kingston Trio, three singers of folk songs, and a manager in charge of money, appeared at the fieldhouse and later in the evening, fraternized with students. Nic-k, Bob, and John sang such favC?rites as "Scotch and Soda" and "Tom Dooley." Their concert wa路s the culminating activity of the pre-Lenten Mardi Gras.

WHO'S WHO '65 Just as the Associated Press selects its top basketball team5 and Hollywood names its outstanding stars , the Un iversity of Dayton also picks "the cream of its crop." Those students who distinguish themselves each year through their efforts in extracurricular and academic activities are named to the Top Twenty students. The "cream" students use as their ingredients such activities as Student Council, Flyer News, Union Program Board, Players, Council of Engineers, social clubs, Daytonian, history society, and football team. Another first! This year we not only won our first NCAA tournament game, entered the new J.F.K. Union , and went to a Roman Banquet, but we also entered our first students into Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. There were 32 students from UD given this honor.

These pupils were selected by a student-faculty committee. The award was given on the basis of academic achievement, participation in school affairs, and future prospects for success. Who 's Who at UD are: (Arts and Science) Stanley Chmiel iewski, Patricia Hornkohl, Carol Lohman, Robert Mohr, Marilyn Mu sterman, Thomas O'Bryan , Nancy Orazio, Betty Jo Sacksteader, Gary Shepherd, Arthur Soinski, . Helen Swihart, Roland Wagner, Paul Woodie , Robert Wilczek, (Business) Dennis Collins, Thomas Mlinac, Gerald Monnin, Gary Savarese , Lawrence Schindel , Cheryl Waber, James Wilmeth , William Zeck, (Engineering) Richard Abdoo, James Doyle, Ronald Fortman, John Giunta, Thomas Gracon, (Education) Charlotte Ashburn , Ruth Bohne , Peter Jablonski, Phil ip Vishnesky, Janet Weiss.

TEN BEST DRESSED Glossiest wardrobe of the year was a路djudged to belong to Sheila Callahan. Neckline-to-neckline behind her were Jul ie Christine, Dottie Bednarz, Betty Bax, Marjie Blake, Mariel Fitzharris, Jerri Meyer, Colleen Brennan , Patti Drehs, and Bobbi Hopp.

CULTURAL

OFFICIAL

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Union affords the people of Dayton many opportunities to obtain the most pleasure from leisure hours spent bowling, browsing in the art gallery, listening to music in the music room or just relaxing in the torch lounge.

Cultural encouragement for Daytonian s is of primary importance in the programs and facilities of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Un ion. Thu s within the Union there is a 389-seat theater, an art gallery, a music listening room as well as banquet and meeting rooms available for cultural activities.

The administrative staff of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Union is geared toward benefiting the entire Dayton community.

SOCIAL Realizing the importance of social development of a community, the Union program gives a great deal of attention to this aspect of our lives. The relaxed setting of the "Torch Room" makes it a popular meeting place. Upstairs, the Presidential Ballroom is the scene of many social functions. The entire Union has been planned to create a warm and informal atmosphere to encourage a fam ily spirit within.

A Salute to UD Graduates

EFFORT = ACCOMPLISHMENT You who are being graduated from the University of Dayton can be proud of this accomplishment that has come through your effort. Members of the faculty and administration can share in this pride because your achievement also is a measure of their continuing success. We in the Dayton community join in the appreciation of educational progress that your graduation represen.ts. You benefit personally, but so does our community and our nation. Indeed, our collective future depends on the dynamic search for truth and understanding that is the heart of education. We of the Tait Manufacturing Company salute you of the Class of 1965. Perhaps your future will be here in the Miami Valley - a good place to live and to grow. We are proud of our community of which you have been a part during your college career. But here or elsewh~re, may you continue to exert the effort that equals accomplishment. Good luck!

To you this Daytonian is presented as a reflection . . . not of an activity, a face, or an event .. '. but a reflection of a year, a university . . . the thoughts and ideas of 1964-65 influences of a year ... for a life .. A yearbook is possible only through the untiring efforts of a cooperative administration

and

many

individual

students working as a team. However, there are always a few who distinguish themselves by doing not only what is required for their specific assignment, but donating much of their valuable time to many other tasks necessary to produce work of this nature. Steve Walter, Al H ill , Mike Steu~rwalt, Joe D~te ,

Bro. Arnold our all-night post-

master, and the Daytonian's invaluable moderator, Miss Devine, are just such people. To these and the entire Daytonian staff I am truly grateful. Sincerely,

Marcia Russo, Editor
