LOCAL U. D. GRADUATES AND THE ELECTIONS Charles W. Whalen, Jr., '42 was reelected U.S. Representative of the Third District, defeating C. Paul Tipps '60. Paul commented he had learned some economics under Whalen at UD and now he has learned something about politics from him. There was speculation that Whalen might seek statewide office in two yearsperhaps the governorship. Joe D. Pegg '51 was an upset winner for Montgomery County recorder.

Sheriff Bernard L. Keiter '42 was reelected for his fifth term. Lee C. Falke '52 remains as Montgomery County Prosecutor. Rodney M. Love '33 was elected Judge of Common Pleas Court. How about some news from our Alumni who ran for office outside the Dayton area?

* * * ANOTHER NORTHERN OHIO COACH Add another successful coach to those University of Dayton gradu ates who are coaching high school athletics in or near Cleveland. Bernie Guilfoyle, '51, who was a basketball and baseball player at UD, has been posting winning records since he left the hallways and classrooms of St. Mary's, St. Joseph's and Chaminade halls in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Bernie is currently the Athletic Director of St. Joseph's High School in Cleveland. As the school's basketball coach since 1955, Guilfoyle has won 181 games and lost only 54. During that period he has won sectional, district and regional championships. In fact, he

has won eight straight sectional titles. He also won a Tri-County League championship. If you take into consideration his 19 basketball victories at Piqua Catholic after his UD graduation, Bernie boasts of 200 triumphs . He also coached football at the Piqua school and had a 13-5 record. He was a part of the Piqua institute from 1953 to 1955. Bernie is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame of the Ohio High School Athletic Association and was named the Coach of the Year in the Cleveland area for the 1960-61 cage campaign. He also was selected Independent Coach of the Year for 1958 through 1961. His wife is Joanne Tangeman Guilfoyle, who also attended UD. The couple has six children: Mike, 17; Steve, 16; Joe, 13; Kevin , 12; Karen, 11, and Dick. 7. That girl must have her problems.

THE REUNIONS Special reunions weren't confined to Saturday this year. The Accounting Class of 1959 started the gettogethers on Friday morning at 7:30A.M.- would you believe? This group held a continuing education program that was basically a one-day study of the University, particularly of its students. The six graduates who were able to attend the reunion heard Bill Hoben, Dean, School of Business Administration, talk about his school. Then, with a student assigned to each of them, they visited classes in session, and talked to students in the Kennedy Plaza, Torch Lounge, Snack Bar and other places. They also visited Bergamo, the Christian Center for Renewal; listened to a student explain the extracurricular programs at UD and h eard the Rev. Francis Maloney speak on the church today. It was the first step in continuing education for UD grads. More indepth programs are to come. Saturday reunions included the classes of 1938, 1943, 1958, and 1963, the band and the Varsity D Club. More than 1,000 graduates attended these reunions .

THE COVER Cathleen Doyle, '67, a member of the University's Development Office staff, designed the cover of this ALUMNUS magazine. It is a one-issue departure from the cover signature alumni around the world have come to know. We are always trying something different and hope that our little " adventures" meet with your approval. Cathleen, through the use of graphic design, has tried to attain simplicity, taste, and elegance; and keeping in mind that negative (free) space is as important as positive space. -Joe Mclaughlin , ALMUNUS Editor.

HOMECOMING QUEENS . .. PAST AND PRESENT When the University of Dayton became coeducational in 1935 twenty-seven coeds registered in the College of Women, the official title for the first two years of coeducation. On October 7 the first coed class elected its officers and Lillian Sheeran became the first president. Then, around this time of the year, Lillian again brought fame to her name and set a new precedent at UD. She became Dayton's first Homecoming Queen, establishing a thirty-three-year tradition at the University which has b een the highlight of Homecoming week ever since. Faces and names may have been forgotten by some alumni but it is hard to forget the pageantry and excitement that went into the determining of Homecoming Queen. And least of those to forget that memorable college day experience are the thirty UD coeds who

have worn the Homecoming crown. For them Homecoming has lasted not merely three days or a week, but it has been preserved in many memories that can be instantly recalled. Although the intentions of most of these UD coeds were to be teachers, nurses, writers or even accountants, most occupations lasted only a few years- and then marriage. Now they are putting their own Kathy and Joe through school, some through UD, watching them collect the same memories a generation later. We would like to dedicate the following feature on past University of Dayton Homecoming Queens to the 1955 Queen, Mrs. Marcia Gabriel Moultney, who is the only deceased member of the group. Mrs. Moultney died November 5, 1960.

NEW SEASON (1968-69) AND A FAREWELL When you read this the 1968-69 University of Dayton basketball season will have started. If construction plans go well, this will be the final year in the UD Fieldhouse which most of you knew so well as undergraduates. No longer will the noise reverberate throughout the campus on these cold winter evenings. Instead the famous Flyers will trudge down Stewart street, across the Stewart Street bridge, down Miami Boulevard, past the Perc Welcome Stadium and over to the 13,500-seat University of Dayton Arena. (See picture and details on another page). Thâ‚Źre is still this year, however. The smell of the National Invitational Tournament championship and

the 14-game winning streak had not evaporated while the Flyers of Co ach Don Donoher were in practice this fall. That's unfortunate b ecause the fans may expect too much out of this club. It is true that many key lette rmen are left but the superstars, Don May and Bobby Joe Hooper, are playing in the pro ranks this year. Don't discount their value to the team particularly in the early going this winter. Remember the champions were 7-9 before that 14-game run and the NIT title. In these two pages are pictures of the 1968-69 Flyers in practice.

SECOND ANNUAL DISTINGUIS

JUDGE EDWIN G. BECKER '14 RECIPIENT 1968 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON

The Alumni Committee in charge of selecting the 1968 Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Dayton has exercised its prerogative of naming two recipients for this year. One of them, Judge Edwin G. Becker, is with us this evening. A brief resume of his outstanding career and accomplishments will attest to the wisdom of the choice and serve as an inspiration to the thousands of his fellow Alumni. Judge Becker is a native of Cincinnati, a product of Marianist education on the elementary, secondary, and college levels. He also holds academic degrees from Xavier University and the Chase College of Law. From the latter as well as from the University of Dayton many years ago , he received the Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his preeminence in that profession.

This year two outs Becker, '14 and Al Mah annual Distinguished A1 tions, reproduced on thÂŁ homecoming banquet i, Gilvary , Alumni Vice award for Mr. Mah rt, present.

For a number of years he taught in schools in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, served as coordinator. in chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Cincinnati, and was assistant to the Chemical Research Director of Procter and Gamble. Since 1920 h e has practiced law in all its aspects, h olding memberships in the Cincinnati Bar Association as well as in the Ohio and American Bar Associations. He is also a member of American Judicature Society. In addition to his very active career as a lawyer, Judge Becker found time to become deeply involved in public service to the Cincinnati area community. He h eld a judgeship in the Court of Common Pleas in Hamilton County for a number of years and served for eight years as a member and Chairman of the Board of the Samuel Drake Memorial Hospital, the largest tax-supported h ospital in Ohio. But his greatest contributions were made in the field of public and Catholic education. A member of the Associate Board of Lay Trustees of the University of Dayton since 1952, he has likewise been a member and ch airman of the Board of the College of Mt. St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio. The Public School System of Cincinnati enlisted his talents and recognized his innovative capabilities by re taining him as a member and Vice-President of the Board of Education for more than 25 years and as a member and President of the Union Board of High Schools for 18 years . He also gave of his time and energy for 14 years as a member and President of the Public Recreation Committee of Cincinnati. In the world of business, he was a pioneer in his concern for the safety and security of the savings of his fellow-citizens. To this end, he founded and directed The Ohio Deposit Guarantee Fund now encompassing 135 member companies with total assets in excess of one billion dollars; and he founded and was chairman of the Board of the Tri-State Savings & Loan Company. He h as also served as President of a number of Savings and Loan companies, of the Dors t Manufacturing Company, and as director of numerous oth er diversified corporations. One of his most cherished awards came in 1957 when he received the St. Francis Xavier Medal, presented each year to an out standing Catholic in the United States. The medal bears the inscription: "For Courageous and Distinguished Leadership in Education and Community Betterment." Judge Becker, devoted husband to his late wife and model father to his two sons, is an exemplary Catholic held in the highest esteem by all his associates, a generous Alumnus with a life-long interest in and association with his Alma Mater and his many contemporary Marianist friends. The University Alumni take great pride this year in naming him a Distinguished Alumnus.

ALPHONSE H. MAHRT, '12 RECIPIENT 1968 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON

Alphonse H. Mahrt, a gentle man, loving husband, athletic great and business giant, is a retiring, almost shy, person. It has been written of Al Mahrt, a recipient tonight of the University of Dayton's 1968 Distinguished Alumnus Award, that "he is quiet and gentle .. . clean of habits .. . considerate of other people ... " Distinguished Alumnus award ~rry Westendorf as Brother

President, reads Mr. Mahrt's 1ard in Mr. Mahrt's absence.

It has been said, too, that " no man ever possessed more drive , honesty and integrity ... " His life, which began on October 11, 1893, has been a constant reaffirmation of those words written by a Dayton Daily News columnist in 1920 and spoken by H. E. Whitaker, Chairman of the Board of The Mead Corporation, in 1967.

Mahrt

They bespeak of success in a Christian, educational, athletic, family and business way. They give evidence of an unyielding competitive instinct which brought Al Mahrt academic and athletic honors as a high school, college undergraduate and graduate student at St. Mary's Institute from 1906 until 1914. It was during this period that Al Mahrt was awarded the Rev. Charles Polichek Prize for Philosophy, the Gold Medal for Excellence in Frosh Letters Class, the Rev. Joseph F. Kelly Theodicy Medal and the Chicago Alumni Gold Medal for Athletics. It was a time, too, when AI Mahrt was a leading college quarterback, a top basketball guard and a fine baseball catcher. Mr. Mahrt helped to make winners of St. Mary's athletic teams. His passing as a college quarterback was considered the finest of his day and he was a leader as basketball teams registered 36 consecutive victories, a record which stands today. This enthusiasm and competitive spirit, born on the playgrounds of Emmanuel Church and South Main Street, Dayton, and nourished in college, carried over into the professional athletic field where Mr. Mahrt was a founder and captain of the Dayton Triangles , an early member of the National Football League.

When the time came to concentrate on the business world, the leadership qualities displayed in athletics were carried into later life . His ability as an accountant, his understanding of finances coupled with a strict code of honesty and integrity brought him to the attention of the Mead and Talbott families. Thus , in 1927, began a union with the Mead business interests which carried on for 40 years. His talents were recognized immediately. By 1928, Mr. Mahrt became assistant treasurer of the Mead Paperboard Company. As the Mead interests expanded he became a leading negotiator and his financial genius, often the subject of conversation among his business friends, played a key role in the constant growth. Challenges were many in the early days. When floods nearly destroyed the Harriman, Tennessee, plant in the spring of 1929, AI Mahrt had the business back in operation by July 4. The Chilhowee Company, established in 1929, was so efficiently run that it provided a profit for the Mead ventures during the depression. When the many Mead interests were incorporated into one large operation in 1930, Mr. Mahrt was named its first assistant treasurer. He also was appointed treasurer of the Mead Paperboard Company, all this after only two years with the corporation. Again in 1936 Mr. Mahrt's financial aplomb served the Mead Corporation. When the (Continued on following page)

Mead Paperboard Company was changed into the Paperboard Division of The Mead Corporation, it was due in large part to Mr. Mahrt's capabilities and understanding of the structural procedures. By 1942, AI Mahrt was named treasurer of The Mead Corporation which now consisted of 12 mills in eight states with a payroll of $10,000,000 and gross sales of $41,0000,000. Responsibilities mounted in the 1940s and 1950s. He developed the Georgia Kraft Company, served as a pivotal force in the many mergers and joint ventures, was the first president of the Macon Kraft Company, first member of its board of directors and became president of Mead Board Sales, Inc. He was elected to the Mead Board of Directors and named corporate vice president. He became president of the Rome Kraft Company in 1952, was named chairman of the finance committee of The Mead Corporation in 1953, and appointed executive vice president for finance of The Corporation. He retired in 1959 as an active officer of The Mead Corporation but maintained his connections on the board of directors and served as vice chairman of the board of directors when the Macon Kraft and Rome Kraft companies merged into the Georgia Kraft Com-

pany. By this time, The Mead Corporation had 50 operations in 20 states, embraced 17,000 employees and showed sales of $509,500,000. So important was he to The Mead Corporation that a company and a town now bear his name in Alabama. AI Mahrt is a friendly man. He is not, however, a " joiner." While he has been a member of various trade associations, the Dayton Bicycle Club, a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and still serves the Chillicothe Hospital and Catholic Charities, he prefers to give freely of himself in a quiet way. His alma mater tonight is recognizing him for the second time. He is a charter member of the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame, being named in 1961. Mr. George H. Mead said of AI Mahrt in 1959 that "he is known as a loyal, dependable associate with real qualities of leadership . . . " The University has also experienced the benefits of these and other generous qualities through his lifelong attachment to its ideals and purposes. It is this loyalty, dependability, and leadership which the University of Dayton recognizes tonight through the presentation of the 1968 University of Dayton Distinguished Alumnus Award.
