1956 MARIANIST AWARD WINNER Frank Duff, founder and interna· tiona I head of the Legion of Mary, was the recipient of the seventh annual Marianist Award by the University of Dayton at a ceremony in the uni· versity chapel on December 8, feast of the Immaculate Conception. The award, a silver plaque, is given each year for outstanding service to· the Mother of God. Mr. Duff, who came ftm Dublin, Ireland, for the presentati n, founded the Legion of Mary in Dub in, in 1921. It has since spread thr ughout the world, reaching to ever~ continent, • and engaging in a WI'd &'I var1ety of apostolic works. It is an association of Catholic laity whose purpose is to sanctify its members, to assist the clergy in bringing fallen away Catholics back to the Church, to seek new

converts, an I to intensify Catholic life. There are t o~ about 42,000 active members in the U.S. alone. Mr. Duff is the second layman to receive the 1ward. M. Roger Brien, of Nicolet, Ca11ada, was awarded the plaque in 1953. Others who have been so honored include Rev. Juniper B. Carol, O.~.M. (1950); the late Rev. Daniel A. lord, S.J. (1951); Rev. Patrick Pey,.on, C.S.C. (1952); Rev. Emil Neube t, S.M. (1954), and Rev. Joseph A. S.<elly, C.M. (1955). MARIOLOGICAL S,()CIETY MEETS JANUARY 3-4, 1957 The eighth annual _,onvention of the Mariological Society of America will be held in Chicago'~ Hotel Morrison on January 3 and 4, 1957. Themeof the convention, Mary'¡. Death, will be treated in six papers presented by well-known Marian schol<~rs. Speakers will include Rev. Salvatore Bonano, C.M.F., "Our Lady's Alleged Immortality de jure and de facto"; Rev. Walter J. Burghardt, S.J., "Testimony of the Patristic Age Concerning Mary's Death"; Rev. James M. Egan, O.P., "The Doctrin~ of Mary's Death During the Scholastic Period"; Rev. John F. O'Connell, "The -:Testimony of the Sacred Liturgy Relative to Mary's Death"; Rev. William Co}le, C.SS.R., "The Thesis of Mary's Death in the Light of Munificentissimus De•1s"; Rev. William G. Most, "The Teaching of PostTridentine Theologians qoncerning Mary's Death." His Eminence, Sam~el Cardinal Stritch, Archbis~op of Chicago, will speak during the traditio 'al Holy Hour on Thursday. Th~ Most Rev. Raymond Hillinger, auxiliary Bishci''J of Chicago, will give the dfficial welcome. Discussion leaders for the v :rious sessions of the convention are: Rev. Timothy M. Sparks, O.P., Rev. J.Jhn F. MARIAN SPEECH FESTIVAL Riordan High School, San Francisco, California, has for the past three years sponsorec a unique project for promoting knowledge of Our Lady: a Marian ~ )eech Festival. Planned as part of the program of the speech departF ent, the festival was held this year on December 8, with all of the :atholic High Schools of the archdiocese of San Francisco invited to puticipate. Events sponsored included Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Reading and Interpretation. The theme of the festival was: "Our Blessed Lady and the Moral Crisis in Modern America." OUR LADY OF THE LIBRARY Diocesan Guild Studios , 300 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton 3, Pa., is now able to take orders for plaster reproductions of the original Our Lady of the Marian Library statue. It has been described as "very beautiful " and "difficult to distinguish from the hand-carved wood , but of course not quite as exquisite as that." The statue is being sold under the t i tle " Our Lady of the Library" and is modeled on the original carved for the Marian Library 1n 1952 by Xavier Hochenleitner of Oberammergau . AVE MARIA ROSE The new Ave Maria Rose, developed by Stern's Nurseries, Inc., Geneva, New York, will be available for spring delivery. The new variety is a nearly pure white, sturdy, ever-blooming rose. We will carry some additional information on the Ave Maria rose as soon as it is released by Stern ' s Nurseries .
