ON THE BRINK OF A POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CRISIS

TEXTO TEXT REDACÇÃO Em Kampala, capital do Uganda, e nas demais províncias do país que se situa na região Oriental de África, durante as eleições presidenciais e legislativas, realizadas em Janeiro último, assistiu-se ao alastrar da ravina que pode ameaçar a paz e tranquilidade públicas, para além de desestabilizar a economia. Dos 45 milhões de habitantes, mais de 17 milhões de eleitores foram às urnas. No final, e apesar de altos índices de contestação pública e de vários episódios de intolerância política e agressão física a familiares e apoiantes do seu opositor, o veterano Yoweri Museveni foi reeleito com quase 59% dos votos, contra 35% de Bobi Wine (nome artístico de Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu), segundo a Comissão Eleitoral local. No período anterior à votação, o país viveu momentos de elevada tensão e violência, sendo que as comunicações foram interrompidas, o que, para a oposição, serviu de artimanha para actos fraudulentos, que permitem perpetuar o domínio do Uganda por Museveni, de 76 anos, no poder desde 1986, assumindo, assim, o seu sexto mandato consecutivo, apesar de demonstrar, nos últimos anos, ser incapaz de levar o país para um porto seguro. n

During the presidential and legislative elections, held last January in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, as well as in the other provinces of the country, located in the Eastern African region, it has been witnessed the spread of a “ravine” type that can pose a threat to the public peace and tranquility, in addition to destabilizing the country’s economy. More than 17 million voters out of 45 million people cast their ballots. In the end, and despite high levels of public protest and several cases of political intolerance and physical aggression against relatives and supporters of his opponent, the veteran Yoweri Museveni was re-elected with almost 59% of the votes, as opposed to 35% for Bobi Wine (the stage name of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu), according to the local Electoral Commission. Prior to the voting period, the country experienced moments of high tension and violence, during which communications were disrupted. The opposition stated it was a trick for fraudulent acts allowing the 76-year-old Museveni to remain in power and, therefore, begin his sixth consecutive term since 1986, although, in recent years, he has proved to be incapable of running the country successfully. n
