Doha The capital of Qatar, Doha is situated halfway down the east coast of the peninsula. It is an important cultural and commercial centre and enjoys excellent communications with the outside world through its modern seaport, airport, and telephone links. Al Wakra Halfway between Doha and Umm Said, you will find the town of Al Wakra. Originally a tiny fishing and pearling village, it has evolved into a small town with a population of less than 30,000. The Al Wakra Museum has been established in one of the town’s old forts and displays the marine life and the natural history of the area. There are also fine examples of the art and architecture included in the exhibits.
Qatar - host World cup 2022 Umm Said Umm Said is the heart of Qatar’s industry. Situated 45 km south of Doha on the east coast of the peninsula, it has both a commercial port and an oil-exporting port. There are refineries in Umm Said as well as other industrial establishments producing steel, natural gas liquids, fertilizers, and petrochemicals. Umm Said also has fine beaches. Al Khor About 57km north of Doha on the east coast, Al Khor is famous for its harbour filled with small craft and fishing boats. It has excellent beaches, an historic tower, and interesting mosques. Madinat Al-Shamal A relatively new town on the northern tip of the peninsula, Madinat Al-Shamal is about 107km north of Doha. It serves as an administrative centre for a number of coastal villages. Al Ruwais Located on the northern tip of the peninsula this town is a fine example of the traditional Bedouin lifestyle as it merges with the modern world.
Al Zubara Situated just 100 km north west of Doha lies the town of Al Zubara, an important archeological site famous for its old fort. This fort-turned-museum was constructed in 1938 during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani and was erected on the ruins of a neighbouring fort. The fort itself is square-shaped with circular towers in three of its corners and a rectangular tower in the fourth. With high, thick walls, this fort also served as a coast guard station and, until the mid-1980s, was used by the military. Dukhan Situated on the west coast of the peninsula, Dukhan is about 84km across the country from Doha. It became important when oil was discovered in the surrounding area. Like Umm Said and Al-Wakrah, the

company profile ‘Al Majda Trading & Contracting Co WLL’ belongs to Buhmaid, an emerging business group with a vision close to Qatar’s vision of 2030. Providing Green Technologies to the nation’s development is close to Buhmaid‘s mission. ‘Al Majda’ is proud to present to Qatar ‘MIL-TEK’ balers/waste presses for the compaction and reduction of various types of waste. What is unique about the Mil-tek products is the pneumatic technology. Using this advanced technology has many benefits, such as low energy consumption, as fast pressing cycle, a high degree of compaction, easy maintenance and a safe operation. Mil-tek shows companies how to turn their waste into a commodity through separation, reducing and recycling. Al Majda also offers services to their customers taking away the recyclable waste and in turn pays the customer top market prices for the compacted recyclable waste. Mil-tek shows how it is possible to combine economic profitability with environmental concern in waste handling, we call this ‘Environomics’. When companies throw waste into a skip without compacting it, they are paying for a waste collector to take 80% air away. This is bad news for the environment and costing them hard earned money. Instead if they sort and bale their waste, they support the environment and earn revenue on the baled recyclable waste.

company profile With the cost of large-scale renewable energy production using technologies such as wind and solar decreasing rapidly, these electricity sources are expected to reach grid parity with the costs of conventional sources of electricity in some markets within the next five to ten years. Countries such as Germany, Spain and Italy have already introduced extensive policies to support large-scale investment in renewable energy to address climate and energy security issues, and other markets, like the USA, are expected to increase emphasis on similar policies to ensure continued investment in alternative energy production. In emerging markets such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India, where government forecasts indicate demand for electricity will increase four fold in the next twenty years, coupled with their worsening carbon emissions, have or are highly likely to introduce similar policies. Accordingly, those with necessary industry expertise and strong local government and regional relationships have a unique opportunity to develop a diversified portfolio of large-scale renewable energy assets to deliver highly attractive investment opportunities with low risk returns. Business Profile GreenGulf, the first renewable energy company incorporated in Qatar, demonstrates leadership by GCC nations to address climate change through large-scale investment in renewable energy. The objective of the business is to create, source and manage investments in the global renewable energy industry, presenting a unique opportunity for high-net-worth individuals and institutions of the Gulf to invest in renewable energy. GreenGulf acts as a bridge for outward investment by GCC nations in the development of renewable energy production in traditional trading partner countries, acting as a hedge for future decline in traditional hydrocarbon export revenue. The company has strong relationships with governments, local institutions and others across the Middle East to drive the introduction of programs and policies that foster the use of renewable energy, and provide a stimulus for R&D and Technology investment into the GCC, thereby creating jobs and knowledge transfer. GreenGulf’s experienced team, with a strong track record of successful development of green-field business opportunities, provides the company a unique skill set including finance, engineering, project management and legal and tax expertise.

company profile
HALCO INTERNATIONAL was formed by the joining of forces of two people and their respective companies from Saudi Arabia for the Qatari market. After one of the partners decided to return and concentrate on Saudi Arabia, the other partner chose to stick only to the construction part of the original intent.
Today, HALCO is a General Contracting and Finishing company. The main strength of the company derives from it’s experience supplying and applying the Dryvit Exterior Insulation and Finishing System manufactured in the United States. As a Saudi based company the remaining partner has represented Dryvit on an exclusive basis in Saudi Arabia for the past 22 years and today we also represent Dryvit in Qatar under the name of HALCO INTERNATIONAL. In February of 2007 a company called PANCELTICA working in cooperation with BARWA which is one of the main real estate development arms for the Government of Qatar erected a sample house in Doha. This rapidly constructed and highly energy efficient housing system later became the model for two 1000 unit Rapid Housing projects in Abu Hammour and Sayliyah. HALCO and the Dryvit System were contracted for QR 37.5 million to provide and install the exterior cladding for this major project which was completed in one year. HALCO has expanded its work into Stamped Concrete which we also did in Saudi Arabia, and the application of specialized exterior colored and/or textured acrylic plastering systems. In addition to its expertise in Patterned Stamped Concrete, HALCO also has picked up the expertise to supply and install a number of other specialized concrete finishing products. One of these products which focuses on the exposed and polished aggregates is called Artivia. Based on the strength of several key men from the U.S. and our general high level of craftsmen from the Philippines, HALCO has now branched into the Epoxy Terrazzo Flooring realm of expertise. We have already taken several contracts in Doha and are currently working on a major contract for the New Doha International Airport in Qatar for this type of work. HALCO has also been shortlisted by Hyundai, Hochteif, Midmac Contrack, CCC, and a number of others for various finishing works in Qatar. HALCO also performs general contracting which specializes in the use of Pre engineered steel buildings and is also now executing 3 substantial contracts with the U.S. Air Force at the Al Udeid Air Base.

company profile Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in 1963 and continued to work as one of the governmental administrations until the issuance of law number 11 for 1990 granting the chamber an independence from the government to become a public benefit institution. Despite the Chamber’s independence, members of the Board of Directors were appointed by virtue of a governmental decree until the issuance of law number 11 for 1996 stipulating that the choice of the Board of Directors’ members shall be made through direct election. In April 1998, the State of Qatar witnessed the first real democratic experience represented by the election of the 17 members of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. On the fifth of May 2002, the elections of the second session of the Chamber’s Board of Directors were held resulting in the election of a Board of Directors chaired by Mr. Muhammad Bin Khaled Al Manee. On the fifteenth of May 2006, the elections of the third session were held resulting in the election of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Jassem Bin Muhammad Al Thani, President of the Chamber; Mr. Abdel Aziz Al Amada, Vice President and Mr. Muhammad Bin Tawwar, Honorary Secretary of the Fund. At the end of May 2010, the elections of the fourth session were held and the actual Board of Directors won. Objectives of the Chamber According to article 1 of law number 11 for 1990, the Chamber aims to organize, represent and defend the commercial, industrial and agricultural interests; to work to promote them; to support and develop the economy and productivity authorities for the good of the country in general and the benefits of its members in particular. Therefore, the Chamber’s role was defined through the objectives set by the law as follows: 1) Organize the commercial, industrial and agricultural interests 2) Represent and defend the Qatari private sector 3) Promote and support the economy and productivity authorities In order for the Chamber to achieve its role, it was necessary that its competences, set by the law, enable it to do so; however, the Chamber continued to work as a consultancy party and its opinion was even disregarded. www.eco-q.org |

company profile Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA)’s role is to organize, enable, and supervise the tourism industry development in Qatar, as well as to represent and promote Qatar as a quality tourism destination for leisure, business, education, and sport. Qatar tourism authority gets actively involved in organizing events and promotions which positively reflect on the general image of Qatar as an evolving tourism destination. Taking advantage of Qatar’s key location Increasing the number of travelers coming to Qatar is the basis of Qatar tourism authority’s new strategy: to grow the tourism industry in Qatar by 20% in the next five years. This will be delivered through a variety of methods including attracting travelers flying through Doha, thanks to the key location of Qatar, between Europe, Africa and Asia. During the 2007/2008 financial year, 10 million passengers traveled through Doha International Airport, thanks to Qatar Airways. The Qatar national carrier currently operates a modern fleet of 64 Airbus and Boeing aircraft from its Doha hub to 83 key business and leisure cities across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, the Far East and North America. Qatar Airways averaged nearly 40% annual growth in both passenger numbers and revenue in 2007 and its fleet will almost triple in size to reach 110 aircrafts by 2018. New orders for planes will total US $16 billion. An estimated 50 million passengers will come through the New Doha International Airport when it opens in 2012, with a capacity to handle 320,000 planes. Qatar tourism authority is targeting 5% of these passengers to stay an extra 48 hours in the country beyond their initial scheduled stopover, totaling 2.5 million travelers. Major investments on tourism infrastructure The investment increase of US $17 billion over the next five years on tourism infrastructure is making Qatar even more attractive to visitors. This includes the construction of luxury hotels, resorts and other leisure facilities, totalling a 400% increase in hotel capacity up to 29,000 luxury rooms by 2012. Qatar will invest even more in tourism sites, such as the newly opened landmark 3 billion USD Museum of Islamic Art, the long-term renovation of the widely appreciated Souq Waqif area, the Doha National Museum, which is currently undergoing a fresh refurbishment, and others projects like the Photography Museum, the Arab Modern Art Museum and the National Library.

company profile UNESCO came to Doha Qatar in 1972 with the mission to help establish the Qatar University which is now a large and successful establishment. In 1981 a project was initiated with the purpose of providing Qatar University with a multi-purpose oceanographic marine research vessel which was handed over to the university in 1983. Qatar and the other Arab states of the Gulf have accomplished remarkable strides in the fields of education, environment, gender equality, infra-structure, culture, and health. To accelerate such development these states sought technical assistance from the United Nations and its agencies particularly UNESCO. To this end, UNESCO Doha Office was established in 1976 in response to a request submitted by the Arab States of the Gulf and agreed upon by the General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris in 1974. The State of Qatar hosted the office in the capital city Doha. The Office extends UNESCO’s services to seven Member States in the region namely: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The work being carried out at UNESCO Doha’s office in supporting these states with their impressive development is in line with UNESCO’s founding guidelines and principles which aim at creating the conditions for true dialogue, based upon respect for commonly shared values and the dignity of each civilization and culture.UNESCO is actively pursuing the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially those aiming to: -halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty in developing countries by 2015; -achieve universal primary education in all countries by 2015; -eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education by 2005; -help countries implement a national strategy for sustainable development by 2005 to reverse current trends in the loss of environmental resources by 2015. Education, science, culture, and communication are the means to achieve an extremely ambitious goal: to build peace in the minds of men. After all, one of the essential principals stated in the UNESCO constitution is: “Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed”
