Language: Learn a few words of the local language. Try and say basic phrases in the local language whenever you can. At the hotel: Ask about environmental policies and practices. Talk with staff about working conditions and community projects. Feedback: Let your hotels and tour companies know if you like what they are doing to operate responsibly. Make specific suggestions on what you would like to see changed. Behavior: Be respectful of local citizens’ privacy. Ask permission before entering sacred places, homes, or private land. Dress appropriately according to local conventions. Photos: Be sensitive to when and where to take photos of people and places. Always ask first. Environment: Never touch or harass animals. Always follow designated trails. Support conservation by paying entrance fees to parks and protected sites. Wildlife viewing: Learn about wildlife viewing guidelines and appropriate behaviors before you go. Be sure to maintain a respectful distance when viewing and photographing wildlife. Meet sharks in their natural environment! Located on the North Shore of Oahu, the Hawaii Shark Encounters tours take you into the open ocean, where you can observe Galapagos and sandbar sharks from the safety of a cage. The shark cage floats on the surface; no scuba experience necessary. All that is needed is a bit of courage and a swimsuit. A very important part of our shark adventure is education, helping to support and further the cause of shark conservation.

Conservation and travel have been my passion since I was young. I’ve been fortunate to have visited over 50 countries and have explored the cultural diversity of 5 continents. My experiences living, studying and working in Central and South America have enriched not only my language skills but also first-hand knowledge of ecotourism and sustainable development. In Costa Rica, studying at Centro Internacional para el Desarrollo Humano, I began to learn about the principles of ecotourism, both in the classroom and in the field.
