David & Goliath
The bible has many lessons for us to study and learn.
One special lesson is that of David & Goliath.
This is found in the book of 1 Samuel 12: verses 1 to 58, which is the entire chapter.
David & Goliath
Long, long ago the nation of Israel was at war with their arch enemy, the Philistines. The Philistines were very wicked and bad people. Let’s read the Bible to learn more!
David & Goliath
1 Samuel 12: 2-4,
“And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

1 Samuel 12: 5-7,
“And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
David & Goliath
1 Samuel 12: 8-10, And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
David & Goliath
When King Saul and the people heard these words they were very afraid.
David & Goliath
Now there was a young man by the name of David. He was the youngest of 8 sons to man named Jesse.
David & Goliath
David’s 3 oldest brothers helped King Saul and Israel fight against the Philistines.
However, David, being the youngest, took care of his father’s sheep.
David & Goliath
Now it had been 40 days that the Israelites were at war with the Philistines. So Jesse told his son David to bring food to his 3 eldest brothers and the other soldiers to see how they were doing.
He wanted to make sure they were ok.
David & Goliath
David went up to the camp to meet the soldiers. As David spoke to his people, scary Goliath came and he challenged Israel as before to try to defeat him. But the Israelites were so scared and they ran away!
David & Goliath
David overhead some of the men of Israel say that whoever could defeat Goliath would be rewarded greatly by King Saul, including great riches and one of his daughters to marry. When David heard this he asked the men to repeat these words just to make sure he heard correctly.
David & Goliath
David wanted to know who was this Goliath that dared to threaten God’s people!!
David & Goliath
David was up for the challenge.
He went to King Saul and told him there was no need to fear because he would fight Goliath himself.
David & Goliath
King Saul said it could not be so.
After all, David was very young and Goliath was a very experienced man of war. Plus he was a huge giant. Almost 10 feet to be exact!
David & Goliath
But Goliath’s height was no match for David’s faith in God and courage.

David & Goliath
David had so much faith and courage that he was able to face that big old Goliath who was much bigger and older than him.
David & Goliath
He did not wear armor like the other soldiers. He took a staff in his hand and 5 smooth stones.
David & Goliath
So David came to face Goliath.
When Goliath saw David and how young he was, he made fun of David and threatened him. Goliath was very evil.
David & Goliath
But this did not worry David at all. David said these words. Let us read…
David & Goliath
1 Samuel 12: 45 & 47, “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.
David & Goliath
After David spoke these words, Goliath charged towards him. David ran towards Goliath and took one of the stones in his bag and slung it at him. Yikes.
David & Goliath
The stone sunk into Goliath’s forehead and he fell on the ground directly on his face. Ouch! So David killed Goliath with one single stone.
David & Goliath
When the Philistines saw that their champion, Goliath was dead, they became afraid and tried to escape the Israelites. But the Israelites went after them and defeated them in battle.
David & Goliath
So we can see that with great faith and courage from God, David defeated Goliath, the giant and the Israelites were able to win the battle against the Philistines. This was all because God helped David and the people of Israel. The end.
