Jesus taught us many parables in the bible. A parable is a story that teaches us to obey God. The Sower and the Seed is a parable that teaches us what happens to people when they are taught the word of God, Matthew 13:1-3. Some people won’t listen at all, they don’t want to hear it and are not interested. Satan takes the word out of their thoughts. Some people listen at first but when problems come they just give up and won’t obey. And some people are distracted, they listen at first but they want to have fun and be like everyone else. They rather have fun, or a lot of money, or to do whatever they want, even bad things than to obey God. But the wise people listen and they believe, and they obey. They don’t give up even when things get hard or people make fun of them, and they love God more than money, or fun, or doing bad things. Because of their good works God will bless them and they can live in his heavenly kingdom forever in joy and peace.
THE SOWER
The Sower is God. The seed is his word. One day a sower went out to sow his seed. A sower is a person who plants seed in a garden or on a farm. A sower is a gardener or a farmer. The sower had prepared his garden for planting. He removed the stones and weeds. But there were some stones and weeds on the outside. And farther away there was a street. The edge of the street was the way side. This was like the curb of the street, a dangerous place far from the garden.
THE SEEDS
When the sower sows his seed he doesn’t plant them one at a time because the seed is very very tiny. He sprinkles them and spreads them out. Sometimes a little wind will blow the seeds in other places besides the garden. This story is about what happens when the seed goes to other places. Remember, the seed is the word of God. The garden is his children that are prepared to listen. But some people are not prepared.
THE WAYSIDE
Some seed fell on the way side. The way side is a dangerous place with birds that eat the seed as soon as they fall to the ground. They didn’t grow at all, they didn’t even take root. As soon as they fell, the birds ate them right up. Matthew 13:4
THE STONY GROUND
Plants need good dirt to grow. Rocks are not dirt. Rocks are hard. The little roots can’t grow through rocks. They need dirt to hold them in and to give them food and water. The rocks get in the way. When the sun comes out there is no protection and the plants that grow just dry up and wither away. Matthew 13:5-6.
THE THORNS
Weeds and thorns can kill good plants. They take the food and water from the ground and they even wrap themselves around the plant and choke them until they kill them.
Matthew 13:7.
THE GOOD GROUND
But a good ground is when the rocks and thorns are removed and where the birds are driven away. Then the seeds can take root and grow and make a lot of good fruit.
Matthew 13:8.
THE MEANING OF BEHIND THE PARABLE
The word of God comes to many people. We find it in the bible. Some people are not interested in learning about God. They don’t want to hear it, and they don’t care. Satan takes the word right away, and they do wicked things. This is the people on the way side.
THE MEANING OF BEHIND THE PARABLE
Other people hear the word of God and at first they are happy and want to obey, but as soon as times get tough they just give up. They are weak. These are people on the stony ground.
THE MEANING OF BEHIND THE PARABLE
Other people hear the word of God and want to do it but they want to do other things more. They are more interested in the things of the world, in making a lot of money, or having fun doing bad things. So eventually they give up too. These are people on the thorny ground.
THE MEANING OF BEHIND THE PARABLE
But the people who hear God and obey him are successful. They read their bible. They have worship and pray. They sing songs to God. They learn to love God and their brother. They obey God’s commandment and they remember the golden rule to treat their brother as they would want to be treated.
THE MEANING OF BEHIND THE PARABLE
When they do these things they grow strong and have good fruit. They are wise and are very good and God will reward them for their good works.
