The 7th Commandment
“Thou shalt not commit adultery”
Adultery? What does that word
mean. To understand adultery
we must first learn about what marriage is. Marriage is a very special relationship between a man and a woman. Did you
that marriage is a special gift from God? Let’s think way back to the beginning of the Bible, when God made everything, including marriage. He made all of creation, and it was good. But there was something that God
saw that was not good. Genesis
2:18 says, “And the LORD God
said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
Even though Adam, a
man, was in a beautiful garden, surrounded by every single kind of animal, there was not anyone like him. So God made Eve, a woman, to be his wife. Adam was really excited and loved her very much and Eve loved him.
God made marriage
special for two people. A
man and a woman get
married and have their own home and their own family. A marriage promise is a special promise to God and to your spouse (husband and wife) that you will love each other and be good to each other for as long as you both live.
In this marriage promise the husband is not suppose to love another woman like he loves his wife and the wife is not suppose to love another man like she loves her husband. Adultery is when a married man or woman chooses to love or have a special relationship with someone that is not their spouse. They are breaking the marriage promise. They are breaking the 7th commandment. God does not want this.
What if you are not
married? Can you break the 7th commandment?
The answer is yes. When you worship other gods or put something or someone above God.
This is also adultery
because God is number 1.
Also, you are breaking your promise to God that you will love and obey him.
