Exsultate! Jubilate!
SATB Chorus and Piano
SATB Chorus and Piano
Commissioned by The Wartburg Choir, Dr. Lee Nelson, conductor, the introduction is sung unaccompanied and the piano comes in for the first statement of the melody in the tenor/ bass parts. Spoken-word soloists declaim in an almost rap-like fashion against the choir singing neutral syllables. A fun, fast, swinging piece that your singers will love. Duration: 3:45
This unique setting pairs the iconic Latin text with an original English text, which is a response to the question, “Why do we rejoice and shout our praises to God?” The music captures the exuberance of the phrases “Exsultate Deo” and “Jubilate Deo,” but also reflects the quiet joys found in the daily gifts of breath and light. The piano accompaniment is rhythmic and lively. Duration: 3:00

Ruthie Foster Paul Rardin Death Came A-Knockin’ (Travelin’ Shoes)
Three Treble Soli and SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied This setting requires three treble soloists with power below the staff and confidence in the blues style. The choral backgrounds are deliberately sparse until a climactic group shout for the preacher. The music is driving and relentless, the singers are determined to be “ready to go” into the kingdom of God. The characters in this unique and compelling work: mother, sister, brother, neighbor, preacher, and finally self, remind us that we will all face this journey, so we had best live right and shout “Hallelujah” when our turn comes. Mama Said SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied American blues icon Ruthie Foster released “Mama Said” on her 2007 recording The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster. This arrangement is deliberately “choral,” preferring to honor Ms. Foster’s exquisite vocal shadings—a bend here, a fall-off there—by avoiding exact imitation. The basses provide the rhythm section of electric bass and closed hi-hat cymbal, leaving the upper three parts in gospel harmony in all but a few measures of the piece. The divisi is confined to a few chords and is not difficult. Duration: 3:00 Medium

TWO SUFFRAGE SONGS Sister, Come By Here!

Women’s Chorus (SSAA) and Piano
The first movement of Two Suffrage Songs is an adaptation of the spiritual, “Jesus, won’t you come by here?” in which the singers call out for others to join the cause. A jaunty piano part in swing eighths supports. The choral writing is approachable and fun. Duration: 2:45
The special imagery in each of these poems finds its way into the musical setting. Evening Song features moonlight sparkling on glimmering waves. Essays of Encouragement for the Church and Its Musicians
Slave Life and the Power of Spirituals Eileen Guenther
Paul Westermeyer This book aims to start a dialogue by asking difficult questions about the status quo of life in church and music. This volume contains speeches, articles, and reflections on the work and worth of the vocation of the church musician. Westermeyer details a breadth of topics facing the church and its 90-65 $16.00 musicians, including cultural assumptions, clergymusician relationships, congregational singing, and the legacy to which all of these subjects contribute. Paperback. 116 pages.
Church Music in the United States 1760–1901
Paul Westermeyer These essays by David W. Music and Paul Westermeyer discuss church music in the United States from the middle of the eighteenth century to the end of the nineteenth. Not a comprehensive history, they can be read singly or as a whole. Their insights into where we have been give perspective on where we may be called to go. Paperback. 328 pages.
This groundbreaking study of slavery and spirituals is the first to place the unique voices of an enslaved people squarely within the context of their daily lives. Dr. Guenther’s deeply researched account weaves a succinct history of “America’s original sin” into an examination of the role of singing and religion in slave life and directly correlates slave testimonies—in their own words—to the themes of Spirituals. In addition to surveying the musical styles, performance practices, and melodic and rhythmic characteristics of spirituals, In Their Own Words includes a biblical concordance to 100 of the spirituals most frequently sung.
