Editorial La Escuela de Cine del Uruguay (ECU) y Cinemateca Uruguaya invitan al XX Festival Internacional de Escuelas de Cine (FIEC), del 20 al 22 de agosto de 2020. Esta edición del FIEC se realiza en el marco de los 25 años de la ECU, y sin dudas no es una edición más. Debido a la emergencia sanitaria vigente por el COVID-19, esta edición del Festival será extraordinariamente online. Extrañaremos los encuentros, las exhibiciones en pantalla grande (más aún con la calidad y calidez de la nueva Cinemateca) y los aplausos que el público le suele dedicar a cada corto. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo esta modalidad abre una nueva y doble oportunidad: la de poner al alcance de todo el mundo, por primera vez, la programación del Festival, y la de generar – también por primera vez – un Encuentro Internacional de Estudiantes de Cine, un espacio en el cual poder intercambiar ideas, reflexiones y distintas experiencias de formación y producción audiovisual. Es una de las novedades de este año tan particular que más celebramos. La selección oficial de cortos a concurso incluye 65 cortometrajes de ficción, documental y animación, realizados por estudiantes de 48 escuelas de cine de 26 países, incluido Uruguay. La paridad de género es, por segundo año consecutivo, absoluta: entre les realizadores hay 37 varones y 37 mujeres. Se trata de una muestra representativa de la diversidad de estilos, miradas, inquietudes y esquemas de producción desarrollados en las principales escuelas de cine del mundo. Este año tan inusual creemos que tiene más sentido que nunca mantener este festival, que tras 20 años sigue reuniendo una muestra de la producción de estudiantes de cine de todo el mundo y lo pone al alcance del público. Una experiencia de intercambio artístico y cultural que, empujados por las circunstancias globales, este año decidimos llevar un paso más allá. Algo así como “salir de nuestra zona de confort”, ¿verdad?

Editorial The Uruguayan Film School (ECU) and Cinemateca Uruguaya invite you to the 20th International Film Schools Festival (FIEC), which takes place from 20 to 22 August 2020. This edition of the FIEC is being held as part of ECU’s 25th anniversary, and it is certainly not just another edition. Because of the current COVID-19 health emergency, this year’s Festival will be exceptionally held online. We will surely miss the meetings, the big screen exhibitions (even more with the quality and warmth of the new Cinemateca) and the applause from the audience after every short film is screened. However, at the same time this approach opens a new and double opportunity: to make the festival’s programme available to everyone around the world and - also for the first time – to carry out an International Film Students Meeting, a space to exchange ideas, reflections and different experiences of training and audiovisual production. It is one of the highlights of this particular year that we celebrate the most. The official selection includes 65 fiction, documentary and animation short films made by students from 48 film schools in 26 countries, including Uruguay. Gender parity is, by second year in a row, absolute: among the filmmakers, there are 37 women and 37 men. It is a representative sample of the many styles, looks, concerns and production workflows developed in the most important film schools in the world. In this unusual year, we believe it makes more sense than ever to keep this festival alive, which after 20 years continues to gather a selection of film students’ productions from around the world and make them available to the public. A cultural and artistic exchange experience that, pushed by global circumstances, this year we decided to take it a step further. Something like "getting out of our comfort zone", right?

Enseña teoría del montaje y fue montajista de filmes culturales y de investigación como los documentales São Paulo Sinfonia e Cacofonia de Jean Claude Bernardet e São Paulo Cinemacidade de Aloysio Raulino. Mariana Viñoles Uruguay Creció en Melo, ciudad del interior del Uruguay. A los 18 años viajó a Montevideo, donde estudió Comunicación Social y realizó talleres de formación en cine. En 2001 viajó a Bélgica donde se graduó en 2005 como Directora de Fotografía en el Instituto de Artes de Difusión (IAD). Entre los años 2005 y 2020 filmó y dirigió siete largometrajes documentales: Crónica de un sueño (2005), Los Uruguayos (2006), La Tabaré – rocanrol y después (2008), Exiliados (2011), El mundo de Carolina (2015), Mi casa en el valle (2019) y El gran viaje al país pequeño (2019). She was raised in Melo, a city in the interior of Uruguay. At the age of 18 she moved to Montevideo, where she studied Social Communication and took part in filmmaking workshops. In 2001 she travelled to Belgium where she graduated as Director of Photography at the Institut des Arts de Diffusion (IAD). Between 2005 and 2020 she filmed and directed seven feature-length documentaries: Chronicle of a Dream (2005), The Uruguayans (2006), La Tabaré – A Rock n’ Roll Story (2008), Exiles (2011), Carolina’s World (2015), My House in the Valley (2019) and Great Journey to a Small Country (2019).

Matías Ganz Uruguay Nació en Montevideo en 1987. Egresó de la Escuela de Cine del Uruguay (ECU), donde realizó los cortometrajes Preámbulo (2008), Hablarte Solo (2009) y La historia de Horacio (2010). Realizó el videoclip del tema “Jordan” de ETÉ & los Problems. Escribió y dirigió junto a Rodrigo Lappado las series de ficción REC (2012), emitida por TNU y Tevé Ciudad, y El Mundo de los Videos (2017), emitida por TV Ciudad. A fines de 2019 estrenó su primer largometraje de ficción, La Muerte de un Perro. He was born in Montevideo in 1987. Graduated from the Uruguayan Film School (ECU), where he made the short films: Preamble (2008), Talking to Yourself (2009) and The Story of Horacio (2010). He made the videoclip of the song “Jordan” by ETÉ & los Problems. Together with Rodrigo Lappado, he wrote and directed the fiction series REC (2012), broadcasted by TNU and TVCiudad, and El Mundo de los Videos (2017), broadcasted by TVCiudad. Florencia Traversa Universidad Católica del Uruguay Estudiante avanzada de comunicación audiovisual en la Universidad Católica del Uruguay. Durante los cuatro años de carrera desempeñó roles como jefatura de piso de TV, productora de programas de TV, producción general y dirección de arte. En el campo profesional se desenvuelve organizando y planificando el contenido audiovisual de empresas de distintos rubros. Además, ha realizado coberturas fotográficas de eventos a cargo de personas privadas de libertad, en el marco de actividades deportivas avaladas por el INR. Actualmente está produciendo Después del silencio, un proyecto documental basado en el conflicto de la pérdida, el dolor y los procesos de sanación. El mismo se estrenará a finales de 2020. Advanced student of audiovisual communication at the Catholic University of Uruguay. During the four years of her career, she performed roles as TV floor manager, TV producer, general production, and art direction. In the professional field, she works organizing and planning the audiovisual content for companies in different areas. In addition, she has done photographic coverage of events with people deprived of liberty within sports activities endorsed by the INR (Uruguay’s National Rehabilitation Institute). She is currently producing After the Silence, a documentary based on the conflict of loss, pain, and healing processes. It will be released by the end of 2020.

Guillermo Lanzani FIC - UdelaR Licenciado en Comunicación de la Facultad de Información y Comunicación de la Universidad de la República. Junto al colectivo Chimichanga Films realizó distintos proyectos audiovisuales de ficción, documental y publicidad. Tomó cursos y talleres sobre análisis de la imagen, narrativa fotográfica y dirección de fotografía. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en la realización de un mediometraje. BA in Communication from the Faculty of Information and Communication of the University of the Republic (FIC – UdelaR). Together with the collective Chimichanga Films, he made several fiction, documentary, and advertising audiovisual projects. He took courses and workshops on image analysis, photographic narrative, and cinematography. He is currently working on a medium-length film.

Sofía Borges Escuela de Cine del Uruguay Es fotógrafa, cineasta y bailarina. Se formó en las Escuelas de Arte de Maldonado desde 2006. Fue parte de la formación en Danza Contemporánea de Casarrodante. Desde 2004 participó en varias obras de danza contemporánea presentadas en diversos festivales. Produjo eventos de música, fotografía, poesía y artes plásticas. Comenzó sus estudios de cine en el taller Ver y Hacer Cine. Dirigió y produjo la exposición fotográfica Mujeres Analógicas junto a más de 50 artistas. Se ha desempeñado en el equipo de dirección de varios cortometrajes y videoclips. Es asistente de dirección del largometraje documental Infinito Particular, en etapa de producción. Actualmente cursa el primer año de la Carrera de Realización Cinematográfica en la ECU. She is a photographer, filmmaker and dancer. She attended to Maldonado Art Schools since 2006. She was part of Cassarodante’s Contemporary Dance program. Since 2006 she has participated in many contemporary dance works presented at various festivals. She produced music, photography, poetry, and plastic arts events. She began her film studies at Seeing and Making Cinema workshop. She directed and produced the photographic exhibition Analogic Women together with more than 50 artists. She was part of the direction team of several short films and videoclips. She is Assistant Director of the feature documentary Infinito Particular, currently in production. She is at the present a first-year student of the Filmmaking Career at ECU.

Premios Awards Premio del Público Audience Award El público del Festival también otorgará sus propios premios al mejor corto internacional y nacional, de acuerdo a una votación online. El mejor corto nacional recibirá el Premio ECU, consistente en una beca para un curso o taller extracurricular a elección. The Festival audience also will award the best international short film and the best Uruguayan short film, according to an online voting. The best Uruguayan short film will receive the ECU Award, consisting in a scholarship for an extracurricular course or workshop.

Premios Awards En total, el Festival entregarรก unos 8.000 dรณlares en premios, todos ellos destinados a seguir haciendo cine. The Festival will award about USD 8,000 in prizes, all of them towards continuing to make films.

Encuentro Internacional de Estudiantes de Cine La Escuela de Cine del Uruguay (ECU), en el marco de sus 25 años, tiene mucho gusto en anunciar la realización, por primera vez, de un Encuentro Internacional de Estudiantes de Cine. El mismo tendrá lugar en paralelo al XX Festival Internacional de Escuelas de Cine, los días viernes 21 y sábado 22 de agosto. El encuentro busca abrir un espacio de diálogo en el cual estudiantes de cine de Uruguay puedan intercambiar experiencias e inquietudes sobre su formación y sobre la producción de cortometrajes con sus pares del resto del mundo. El punto de partida serán los cortos programados en el Festival, aunque las inquietudes podrán ir más allá y abarcar las distintas experiencias de formación en las diferentes escuelas de cine y la inserción profesional dentro de las industrias cinematográficas de cada país. Lo más interesante de todo esto es que tanto las propuestas temáticas como la moderación de esos encuentros estarán a cargo de un grupo de estudiantes de la Carrera de Realización de la ECU, de 2º y 3er año, varios de los cuales participaron de la preselección de cortos para el Festival. El primer encuentro, moderado por Federico Sánchez, Paulina Perandones, Ignacio Fomichov y Antonella Scigliano, será el viernes 21 a las 17:00 horas de Uruguay (UTC -3). En tanto el segundo encuentro, moderado por Lucía Martínez, Luca Mirabolano, Manuel Rosa y Mateo Duarte, será el sábado 22 a las 18:00 horas de Uruguay (UTC-3).

Algunas de sus propuestas temáticas serán: el cortometraje como formato y sus particularidades, la construcción y el tratamiento de los personajes tanto en la ficción como en el documental, así como la construcción de un mundo coherente y verosímil para los personajes. También proponen abordar el acompañamiento que realizan las diferentes escuelas de sus procesos creativos, tanto desde las tutorías docentes como en relación a las condiciones de producción y los recursos técnicos, así como el espacio que se le da en el marco curricular a la animación y la no ficción. El lugar del cine dentro de cada país y sus posibilidades de inserción dentro de la industria son también inquietudes que estarán presentes, así como la motivación y los procesos de producción detrás de los cortos exhibidos antes de cada charla. El Encuentro de Estudiantes de Cine está abierto a estudiantes de escuelas de cine de todo el mundo, dando prioridad a quienes forman parte de esta edición del Festival con sus cortometrajes. Para registrarse (sin costo) solo es necesario enviar un mail a festival@ecu.edu.uy incluyendo: nombre completo, institución, universidad o escuela de cine a la que pertenece y qué día desea participar (viernes y/o sábado). Se enviará un mail de confirmación con los datos de acceso a Zoom hasta 24 horas antes de cada encuentro. Se contará con traducción simultánea español-inglés.

International Film Students Meeting The Uruguayan Film School (ECU) celebrates 25 years and, for the first time, organizes an International Film Students Meeting which will take place along with ECU’s 20 International Film Schools Festival, Friday August 21st and Saturday the 22nd. The meeting seeks to open up a dialogue in which film students from Uruguay and the rest of the world can exchange experiences and interests about their film education and audiovisual work. It will all start with the festival’s short films selection, although the conversations are expected to go beyond them, according to the thematic proposal of the group of ECU students who will moderate the discussions. They are in their second or third year (of the three-year Filmmaking Career), and some of them took part in the festival’s selection process. The first meeting, moderated by Federico Sánchez, Paulina Perandones, Ignacio Fomichov, and Antonella Scigliano, will take place on Friday, August 21st at 17:00 hours Uruguay time (UTC -3), while the second, moderated by Lucía Martínez, Luca Mirabolano, Manuel Rosa, and Mateo Duarte, will begin Saturday, August 22nd at 18:00 hours Uruguay time (UTC -3). Their discussion topics include: the short film as a format and its particularities; character construction and treatment in both fiction and documentary work; and the construction of a coherent and plausible world

for characters. They also propose to discuss the creative processes students experience in the different film schools, such as the teachings tutorials and the production and technical resources, as well as the curricular space given to animation and nonfiction works. The possibilities of insertion in the film industry within every country will also be a topic in the discussions, again with the festival’s short films offering a starting-off point. The International Film Students Meeting is open to film students from all over the world, while giving priority to those who participate in this year’s selected short films. A confirmation email with the Zoom details will be sent 24 hours before the event. Simultaneous Spanish-English translation will be available to facilitate discussion.
