Do black lives matter to me? Abhorrent as it was, what does a man being murdered in America have to do with us in Australia? Is it even a relevant conversation in our country? The United States is meandering through an election year that is a spectacle in and of itself. That Donald Trump has supporters is as baffling and ironic as Joe Biden having supporters. Both men embody privilege, and both men have the type of checkered moral history that can only be explained away through Hollywood style scripting.

As a US political movement, Black Lives Matter has little to do with Australia but Black Lives Matter as a statement? BLM as a statement has plenty to do with us and maybe exposes things we would prefer not to talk about.

Perhaps the glossy, amicable, magazine-cover façade is hiding something not so palatable? I want to suggest that our greatest weakness when it comes to empathising with Black Lives Matter as a statement is our ignorance. In Australia, it is not a widespread, malicious ignorance. Instead, in our desire to appear cordial, our ignorance is demonstrated with a ‘she’ll be right, mate’, sweep it under the rug attitude. For example, statements like “there was no
