INTERNET OF

THINGS [IoT]

Louisville Center for Design at Lindsey Wilson College

new era

We’re entering a of computing technology that many are calling the Internet of Things (IoT). Machine to machine, machine to infrastructure, machine to environment, the Internet of Everything, the Internet of Intelligent Things, intelligent systems - call it what you want, but

it’s happening, and its potential is

huge.

2003 The number of things connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on earth. (7 billion +-) 2020 The things connected to the Internet will exceed 50 billion Cisco CEO: “We’re All In On Internet Of Everything”

What is the Internet of Things? Today there are more things connected to the Internet than there are people in the world. In the very near future, pretty much everything you can imagine will wake up or be smart. (When more things become smart, more things generate data, Big Data.) We are leading the next step (in education) in the evolution of the Internet and helping change the way we work, live, play and learn.

More Interesting Predictions By 2020: 6.6 objects per person connected to the internet 50 internet connected objects per household By 2032: Every person could be surrounded by 3,000 to 5,000 smart “things everyday This will generate massive amounts of Big Data

Beyond the impact to your immediate, day-to-day life, the IoE transformation will sweep across every aspect of society and the marketplace in profound ways. That includes employment, which will be redefined drastically. Source: http://blogs.cisco.com/ioe/people-process-data-things-jobs/

A significant constraint on realizing value from big data will be a shortage of talent. In the US, we project that the demand for deep analytical positions in a big data world could exceed the supply being produced for current trends by 140,000 to 190,000 positions.

90% of all data in the world has been generated n the last four years. “The answers to today’s most important scientific, business and social problems lie in data” Ayasdi CEO and cofounder Gurjeet Singh

In a Nutshell...

What does IoT and Big Data mean for me?

PRE-IoT Human >> Data spawned an entire industry and changed nearly everything in the world

POST-IoT Human + Machine >> Big Data this will dwarf the pre-IoT era

Why Consider Graduate School? Undergraduate Degrees can ill prepare you for the IoT, but you can learn this on your own and/or on the job... this can result in delaying promotion, less pay and missed opportunities. Existing professionals who have been in the field for only a short time have missed this knowledge and training. Past education has not included what has been presented ... this too can result in an unqualified status for promotion, less pay and missed opportunities. Past undergraduate and graduate degrees in design, business, communication, technology, and other related fields have not addressed these issues and topics.
