NEW VANS
ON FRESH IDEAS
A pollen-laden bee busy at work on Spelmonden Farm • WELL WE FINALLY seem to have enjoyed a proper English summer for a few weeks. Business has been brisk and warm summer evenings have always been a great boost to trade. The rapeseed in some of the fields around us here in Kent looks (and smells!) ready for harvest and the first plums are coming off the trees as I write this. The weather has highlighted a couple of issues for us which are being addressed; our apologies if your ice cream has been melted but it’s only when problems occur that we see what needs improving. As ever, product quality and customer service remain our clear focus and if we’re coming up short we would like to know.
New developments here at Goudhurst continue at pace. Our oldest cold store, fridge 1, has been fully refurbished with new walls, new plant and new door. It had already been earmarked for Howie’s growing fresh produce and speciality foods. We’ve always been based here in the heart of Kent and with so many amazing farmers and growers around us, this has been an ongoing project for some time. As members of Produced in Kent, we’ve established relationships with some really passionate people, many of them third, fourth or even fifth generation farmers who know the land and the area extremely well and whose produce is some of the best we’ve ever seen. You will hear more from Howie over the coming weeks as we roll out this side of the business. As ever, we are keen not to go too fast so you get what you order in tip top condition. One other new development is the introduction of our three little extra vans. All our normal vans leave us here in Goudhurst between 2am and 7am depending on their routes but for a variety of reasons we do sometimes need to go out later in the day. Our new little extra vans mean we can offer more flexibility without the need to run our bigger vans again; more economical for us and hopefully a better service for you. Fingers crossed that the good weather holds for a great August Bank Holiday Weekend. Toby

Watch this space over the coming months as we reveal plans for our recently refurbished fridge, which will add a whole new side to the way we sell our fresh produce.
You SAY TOMATO... WE say...Nutbourne nurseries!
The purveyors of exotic tomatoes who bring wonderful variety and flavour to the classic tom. They are fed and watered on a daily basis and benefit from the perfectly controlled environment that has been created by Gary and his team. The plants are also protected from any problem pests by being inspected regularly and by the introduction of natural predators. Once ready, the crops are hand-harvested just in time for them to reach the consumer at perfect ripeness.
WHETHER you like your tomatoes big, small, red, yellow, raw in a salad or oven roasted, Gary and Jenny Griffiths have every combination to keep even the most adventurous palate satisfied. It was back in 1979 that Gary first started growing at Nutbourne Nurseries, which at the time was a shadow of its present incarnation, but having been growing since the age of sixteen, Gary took it upon himself to grow a range of crops including tomatoes and lettuce rotation, which he did so with great success. By 1989 the nursery had evolved to specialise in insect-free tomatoes grown in hydroponic
systems, which meant that Nutbourne was producing yields in excess of 50kg per m2 and by the time 1995 came about, this had increased to 60kg yields, which were at the top end of the industry at the time. But it in was the years from 1999 that things really got interesting, as they began to grow speciality tomatoes, which have culminated in this year having an amazing twenty three different varieties of exotic tomatoes of different colours, sizes, flavours and textures to delight our plates and salad bowls.
But for us the part of the story that we love the most about these wonderful creations of nature, is once they reach our plates. It is truly hard to find a finer tomato, whatever variety you choose. So why not give us a call and try a box today. Available in 3kg or 5kg boxes
The Nursery itself is a wonder to behold. The hydroponically grown plants respond to the care and dedication that are bestowed upon them by growing to as much as thirty feet in length.

SUE JOY has been our Human Resources Manager for two and a half years and probably has one of the busiest jobs here at Turners, with each day bringing a different challenge. Having a butterfly mind is a must for Sue, as there are always people requiring her attention, whether it be for staff matters or managers requiring her support. According to Sue though, the best thing about working at Turners is the family feel within the company and she loves the commitment and passion shown by every member of staff in every department. In her spare time, Sue loves to be surrounded by her three grandchildren who are aged one, two and three respectively...sounds like quite the handful!

Sue
Although she has enjoyed a successful career in HR, Sue’s fifteen minutes of fame came in her younger days, when she was chosen to be in the Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall video. She says it was a great opportunity and she even got a signed copy of the album! What may also come as a surprise to those who know Sue (or not), is that she has a gory side and is a total CSI addict, so if she wasn’t working here at Turners, she would love to be a Crime Scene Investigator. Last year saw Sue marry her partner Cliff and they enjoyed a honeymoon in Turkey, they had a fantastic time, but they also have Australia on their list of dream destinations. If they do one day manage to get there, she’s pretty certain she’ll still be stuck on level 35 of CANDY CRUSH!
