About the authors
The authors of this planner are uniquely placed to understand the needs of the modern Irish primary school teacher in the work of classroom planning and organisation. Between them they have over 36 years of ‘front line’ experience combined with extensive education and relevant research. Jacinta O’Connor (B.Ed., M.Sc.) teaches at North Bay Educate Together National School in North Dublin. Comprehensive experience across all class levels and as a special education teacher have provided her with a well-rounded knowledge of all curricula. Jacinta’s teaching practice epitomises ET ethos and is a shining example of modern pluralist education. She is passionate about child welfare which is exemplified in her postgraduate research into helping parents to manage their child’s transition from pre-school into primary school. Edel Blake (B.Ed., PG.DIP., M.A.) is deputy principal of St Cronan’s JNS. She has taught at a wide variety of class levels and as a special education teacher. Edel has developed her teaching skills by pursuing continuous professional development in both curricular areas and educational leadership. She has also created, facilitated and delivered continuous professional development courses for teachers. She has comprehensive knowledge of the Revised Primary School Curriculum and the new Early Childhood Framework (Aistear). Edel believes that succinct, purposeful planning contributes to an enhanced learning experience for both the children and the teacher.
A note from Jacinta and Edel We understand that your time and energy as teachers are valuable. Having collaborated on a number of projects, we had often discussed the need for a singular teacher’s tool that was comprehensive, professional in appearance, and fulfilled the roles of diary, organiser, progress-tracker and record-keeper all in one. Both tired of being laden down with multiple folders and diaries with loose-leaf copies, we tried and tested a number of planners from both the Irish and overseas markets and concluded that there was no product that met the needs of Irish primary school teachers. With the support of Edco, we created what we feel is an invaluable resource for the organised and professional Irish primary school teacher of today. We have consulted with teachers to ensure that the planner meets the needs of all teachers of all levels in all primary schools. We have listened to feedback and made a number of improvements to this new edition. We feel that this planner enables teachers to use their time more efficiently while planning more effectively.
