JUNIOR INFANTS TO SECOND CLASS

The programme is organised into ten themes at each class level; one theme is covered per month.

A spiral approach is used whereby themes are revisited to allow for extensive engagement with each topic. The same ten themes are explored in Junior Infants and First Class and also in Senior Infants and Second Class, while some themes are covered every year and explored in a different way.

Key SESE skills are targeted; the development of geographical, historical and scientific skills is a key feature of the programme.

Opportunities are provided for integration between the SESE subjects and other curricular areas. Designing, making, investigating and experimenting are key features of science lessons; the programme ensures that hands-on, practical activities are undertaken regularly.

The programme is clearly laid out; each subject is colourcoded in the Pupil Book and the Teacher’s Resource Book.

Colourful design, clear layout and a child-friendly font make the programme accessible to children of all abilities.

Each Little Explorer character is associated with a particular subject to enable children to differentiate between subjects. Sparky is the Little Explorer for Science, Erin represents Geography and Fionn is linked to History Classroom Posters facilitate the introduction of the themes and enhance lessons across the three subject areas

THIRD CLASS TO SIXTH CLASS

Written by a team of three highly experienced subject experts and practising Primary school teachers, Explore with Me is completely in line with the SESE Primary Curriculum and NCCA guidelines.

History, Geography and Science explored thematically in one integrated pupil book.

Each of the strands and strand units are arranged according to theme; monthly units are organised thematically

The thematic approach strengthens pupil learning and supports the reinforcement of the theme.

Features a child-friendly layout with colourful pictures, clear diagrams and highlighted sections.

The material has been extensively reviewed by experienced teachers and contains differentiated questions for mixedability pupils.

Key words are highlighted at the beginning of each chapter.

Each chapter starts with the Learning Outcomes in the Let’s Learn section giving pupils ownership over what they will be learning about.

Fascinating Facts sections are included throughout.

Let’s Get Exploring! activities support skills introduced throughout the chapter.

Bright and easily identifiable icons are featured throughout to show integrated digital resources.

Many Science chapters include Let’s Experiment! sections.

The Show What You Know! section contains questions for revision. Features timelines, maps and an illustrated child-friendly glossary at the back of the book.

16 Working as aScientist ScienceSkills Working as aScientist What is science? Science is the study of the world around us. The itself comes from the Latin word scire which means ‘to know’. But science isn’t just about knowing things, it is system of finding out bout things. Through observations and experiments, can use science to ask and questions about the world. Who are scientists? Did you know there are many different branches of ience, and many different types of scientist? A zoologist, for example, studies animals nd their behaviours; a geologist studies the Earth and what is made of; and a physicist studies energy and how things work. What they hav in common is their approach to finding out about their area of interest. This approach called the scientific thod. By being curious about the world round you, practising the scientific method nd developing your skills, you be scientist too. Which skill do you think is the most important a scientist? Why? What branch of cience do you think would be most interesting to study? Why? Let’s discuss working researching studying An astronomer the stars Develop hypothesis (idea). Rivers provide habitats for flora and fauna. Over time, rivers have also become places full of human activity. Have you ever visited a town located on a river? From mountains to the sea The source of a river is in the mountains. It can be a lake, natural spring or glacier Gravity causes the flow of water downwards over land to the sea. Rivers and us Rivers have been used to transport food and other goods by boat since earliest times. The lands near rivers were good places for people to settle because rivers provided food, water, transport and jobs. Factories were built alongside rivers for traders to produce and store their goods. Flour and lumber mills were built along riverbanks so that the water could be used to power the mills. Rivers and canals What is the difference between river and canal A river naturally forms at a source and flows until it reaches the sea or a lake. A canal is a man-made waterway. Engineers designed canals in the past so that goods could be transported between places where there were no rivers. Locks and weirs Rivers can be difficult to navigate because of strong currents and dangerous sandbanks. Some rivers and canals have locks or weirs make it easier for boats to travel. A weir is a kind of overflow dam that is designed to alter the flow of a river. A lock is a device with gates that is used to raise and lower boats if there is a slope. Flooding in Ireland In recent years, flooding has become a major problem for towns, villages and farms located beside rivers. This has been caused by extreme weather events. To reduce flooding, some people propose dredging riverbeds. Others are opposed to this as it would damage habitats. Also, fixing a problem in one area can have knock-on effects farther downriver. If, however, extreme flooding events continue to happen, then a solution needs to be found. The River Shannon The River Shannon is named after a Celtic goddess named Sionna. There is a legend that a creature named Cata lives in the water! The Shannon was used for transport and trade up until the 20th century because so many waterways are connected to it. Nowadays, it is a very popular location for water sports, fishing and cruising. It brings a lot of visitors to the Shannon Region. Upper section: The flows fast, has strong currents and waterfalls. The fast water takes soil from the riverbanks and riverbed. is called erosion. Middle section: The starts to flow more slowly, and curve and bend. These bends are called meanders Sometimes erosion will cut straight path across the ends of a meander and leave an oxbow lake river is joined by smaller rivers called tributaries Lower section: The river spreads out and flows quite slowly. Our Teeth 22 Living things Human skills: observing, investigating experimenting, sorting and recording and communicating 22 Our Teeth Teeth are covered in a hard white substance called enamel which protects the teeth’s sensitive inner parts (dentin, pulp and nerves). Holes can form in the enamel if teeth are not cleaned regularly. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth in small circles rather than back and forth, as this could wear away the enamel. We use teeth to chew food. Teeth have bumps and ridges that help to break down food for digestion They are joined to the jaw, which is part of the skull Types of teeth Taking care of your teeth By age 12 or 13, you will probably have 28 permanent teeth. You will have these for the rest of your life, so you must look after them. Teeth cannot repair themselves. Plaque is caused by food and drinks (especially sugary ones) clinging to the teeth. Brushing twice a day can prevent plaque build-up. Flossing is also very important. A trip to the dentist once a year will help to keep the teeth healthy. enamel dentin pulp nerve Sugar Equipment:experiment cola, glass, hard-boiled egg, toothbrush Action: Write down your prediction of what will happen to an egg left in cola overnight. Put the egg in a glass of cola and leave it overnight. The following day, remove the egg from the glass. Using the toothbrush, make circular motions over the egg. ● Record your findings. What happened to the egg? Why did this happen? What are teeth used for? Name four different types of teeth and what they are used for. 3 What are wisdom teeth? 4 By what age will child usually have 28 of their permanent teeth? 5 What is enamel? 6 Describe how the four types of teeth are used when eating an apple. Why do we grow a second set of teeth during childhood, do you think? List as many foods as you can that are bad for both the body and the teeth. Pair work: Create a role play about a trip to the dentist’s. It can start with phoning the office to make the appointment. 3 Group work: Do research online to find eight foods and drinks that are good for the teeth. Briefly explain why they are good for the teeth. Present your findings to the class. Incisors are at the front the mouth. There four at the top and four at the bottom. They are used for biting and cutting food. Canines are the pointy teeth beside incisors. There four canines – two at top and two at the bottom. They are used for ripping and tearing food. Molars are the largest teeth. There are eight at the back of the mouth, four at bottom and four at the top. They grind and break down food before swallowing. Premolars are smaller than molars. There are premolars.eightThey hold and crush food when you chew. Plaque Wisdom teeth are a set four extra molars. They have no function. Some people get them as adults. Some people never get them. I would recommend it to be used in my school when it is published. I cannot wait to see the finished product and use it in my classroom. – Primary Teacher, Dublin

Overall this is an exciting scheme. I love how there is a cross over between subjects with SESE, SPHE and Irish. – Primary Teacher, Tipperary

Something my class hated about their handwriting book was the repetition of the same letters and words. This programme focuses on handwriting as well as other exercises to get the children practising their writing which is very beneficial. – Primary Teacher, North Dublin

The inclusion of a flip page/ visual for correct writing etiquette is fantastic as I am constantly saying the same thing over and over. – Primary Teacher, Co. Dublin
