Introduction Being a small business owner can be daunting sometimes. Constant cycling thoughts, centred on ‘how’ to achieve goals and to manoeuvre through daily challenges can quickly rob you much needed optimum mind energy levels. Every dawning day brings with it more to be done in the business to keep the wheels turning. Depending on the nature of your business, many different parts of this ‘machine’ must move at the same time in harmony.

Is there a formula we can use to program the mind and shield it from the ‘daily drama’ so as to remain energised? It would be nice to move through the day with a formula that injects more energy and power to the mind on auto wouldn’t it? Too much thinking about everything that comes up takes away so much energy and can be counter productive if unchecked. Being unproductive slowly snowballs to stress and the cycle is vicious but there are 3 things we can start looking at today that can move us to a more energy efficient state daily.

1.

Patience

To what level do you exercise patience in your business? Finding a sweet spot on how to manage this can be very freeing. As much as we like to be in control, things don't happen as planned. There’s a lot of variables involved i.e. staff, tools, business partners, customers etc. that are part of this process.

For the most part, we can control this outcome but experience teaches us that it does not happen that way. Knowing and understanding your patience thermostat becomes key. We must then adjust this so that no matter what happens in this moment, we still get to maintain that level of energy and personal power needed to cruise through the rest of the day…almost like nothing happened! I remember what my physics teacher taught me a long time ago – energy is the capacity to do work, it's probably all the justification I need to keep this part of the formula nicely oiled and running smoothly.

2.

Persistence

The mystic power that drives our persistence works in the background with what appears to be little or no effort from us. Its effects are subtle and rarely noticeable on a conscious level. As a business owner, it is necessary to maintain a healthy level of persistence no matter what the reality of the moment might be.

I was attempting a business venture for the third time after failing twice and learning some valuable lessons. The story going on in my mind was dierent. It was more focused on avoiding the same mistakes. This was leading me towards a dark path dominated by limited thinking. What story is going on in your mind about your business today? If the drive is coming from failure experiences, chances are just like me, fear is driving you. Being driven by fear might be okay but being aware that it sucks away more energy in any moment is worthwhile to note. We may succeed in avoiding mistakes but it also takes away an opportunity to explore new ideas.

3.

Positive

Positive thinking and positive believing to me are far and removed from each other. I ďŹ nd the latter more powerful and long term compared to its distant cousin.

Why?

Have you ever tried to force a positive thought when something bad happens in the moment? Some time back, my car broke down on the freeway at 2am in the morning as I was driving home from an event. It was a cold night and I hadn’t remembered to bring a warm jacket. I am not sure positive thinking about the incident would have made the moment more bearable.

So I got pissed off for a bit then the pain faded away after a little while. No more energy needed to go into focusing on the incident. I jumped into the passenger seat and napped as I waited for help to arrive. Forcing a positive thought in that kind of situation drains you. However, if you are driven by positive beliefs, these kinds of situations will not have so much power over you. You get distracted, yell for a bit, kick a tyre and then you are back on track.

Final Thoughts These 3 things I find very empowering. As a business owner, I want to stay focused on the big picture. I want to make sure my energy is optimised for the best use every day. Everything that happens in this moment is important. It’s my ONE chance to make a difference, to make an extra move towards that goal.

Have an energised day!
