“We’re very proud of our entire team who saw the vision of Tesoro Viejo so many years ago. The first trees were planted a decade before the first roads went in. This community is unlike any other. It’s 1,600 acres of the most walkable, wide-open spaces with parks, recreational amenities and miles of trails. It’s a small town feel, where home owners can walk their children to school along tree-lined streets and where weekends are celebrated at resort-style pools, festivals and concerts.” Donald P.

Five Simple Steps to Turn Your Boring Bedroom into a Luxurious Getaway

Do you ever walk into a carefully curated hotel room and wish your bedroom boasted those same feels? The colors and textures that meld together in perfect harmony elate every one of your senses. I often hear from clients that they wish for their bedrooms to resemble something similar to a luxury hotel room. I, of course, am always eager to indulge their every fancy.

Keep your bedding light.

When have you visited a hotel with black sheets adorning the bed? Never? Keep your linen light in color. This way, you always feel crisp and clean before hitting the hay. Nothing compares to dozing off on fresh, unsullied sheets. Natural fibers will also make a difference here. Cotton, linen, and bamboo are uber-breathable and will thus make for a more comfortable sleep.

Use a secondary light source.

Overhead lighting is extremely functional. However, there is nothing quite like the subtle lighting of decorative lamps for an appreciable ambiance. Set the mood every night with an elegant, glowing floor or table lamp. This is especially impactful when paired with a luxurious shade. I favor a drum shape, but make it personal. Opt for a functional light next to your bedside and a lamp with more ambiance in a dim corner of your room.

3

Give yourself an accent wall.

Make your bed shine with a glorious backdrop. If you are so inclined, get creative and jazz up one wall. Vertical wood slats are excellent for bringing in a contemporary flare. Use wallpaper with a large floral motif for a more feminine touch. Employing an oversized headboard is great for ushering in some drama. The idea is to incorporate an element that’s impactful but not overstimulating.

4

Keep it simple and clean.

Luxury hotel rooms don’t have clutter. They keep accessories to a minimum. You often find a small stack of magazines and a simple, fresh floral arrangement, and sometimes a notepad with an elegant pen sit atop a writing surface. The same concept can be used in your home. Restrict the few items to things that are meaningful and useful to you. A set of coordinating picture frames, a vase with fresh flowers, and a beautiful sculptural object are acceptable accessories you can incorporate into your room.

Use a tray.

Trays are ideal for grounding arrangements and making them feel more substantial in a space. Use one to support the books you are currently reading, a scented candle, and possibly a small bud vase. If you have a sitting arrangement in your room, use a tray to carry the remote control(s) and a small candy dish. Trays also allow you to move objects around your room with ease.

5

Be Our

Guest

To travel is to expand the mind and feed the soul. Central Valley natives are fortunate to call this place home-base thanks to the area’s own virtues, though it is worth noting that one of the reasons why it’s so great to be from here is the proximity factor. Mountains, coastline, and cities are just a short drive away, and it’s easy to find world-class accommodations without needing to board a plane. Yet there are a handful of local hotels bringing that same resort vibe to the center of the Golden State. To the south, The Padre Hotel is one of Bakersfield’s newest but oldest treasures. In Coalinga, Harris Ranch Resort’s recent transformation reinforces its reputation as both a destination and stopping point. Albeit in the heart of Downtown Visalia, The Darling Hotel has garnered international recognition. Midway between the Bay Area and Yosemite, Merced’s El Capitan Hotel is much more than a place to pit-stop. Château du Sureau transports guests to Europe from Oakhurst without a passport. The crown jewel of the National Park lodges is undeniably The Ahwahnee. Each of these hotels and resorts offers a unique experience unrivaled by anything else in their prospective area, and all are the embodiment of local luxury.

559.713.2113

210 North Court Street Visalia, CA 93291 www.thedarlingvisalia.com

The Darling Hotel really is a darling, as its name suggests.

“Formerly home to the Tulare County Courthouse Annex, The Darling opened its doors in 2020 as a locally-owned, beautifully reimagined boutique hotel for today’s modern-day traveler,” states Jessica Garcia, Assistant General Manager at the hotel. The hotel was originally established in 1935 at the center of Visalia’s early 20th century downtown scene. “Despite an earthquake leveling the courthouse in 1952, the surviving annex was repurposed to serve as the Tulare County Social Services building. It changed hands a few times and even remained vacant for a while.” Years of neglect and disrepair kept the building from meeting new regulations. This state prevailed until a group of local investors became interested in rehabilitating the property and brought it back to its former grandeur.

What resulted is truly a locals’ labor of love. “The Darling stands out because it was purchased and restored by five local families rather than a corporation,” says Garcia. “As a result, it plays a vital role in the community. Employing nearly 100 local residents, The Darling fosters economic growth and job opportunities. Beyond providing hospitality, the hotel’s elegant restaurant serves as a cherished gathering place for life’s celebrations. The Darling actively supports local businesses, artisans, and cultural organizations, preserving the region’s heritage. Through local procurement, educational partnerships, and skill development initiatives, the hotel promotes sustainable growth and empowerment. Its deep community roots reflect the owners’ vision of uplifting the region, establishing The Darling as a catalyst for positive change.”

“The Darling Hotel restored a piece of local history, reimagined to offer today’s guests a one-of-a-kind hotel experience,” Garcia points out. So, what’s in the name? “The name ‘The Darling’ is a heartfelt tribute to Darlene, the beloved mother of two of its owners,” Garcia explains. “By naming the property after her, the owners have immortalized her memory and paid homage to the profound impact she had on their lives. This thoughtful gesture

imbues The Darling with a deeply personal touch, elevating it from a mere accommodation to a cherished legacy infused with familial warmth and affection.” This mantra is carried throughout the hotel’s aesthetic. Restoration efforts were mindful of upholding the hotel’s original design. “Elements of the hotel’s Art Deco logo design can be found in the hallway doors, patterned carpet, windows, and rooftop railing.”

Symbols of the building’s rich history echo throughout its walls and in every room. “The first-floor vault has been converted into a wine cellar,” shares Garcia. “Original 1930s doors and antique light fixtures have been restored and rehung.” Reverence to an era now past is paid all the way to the fourth floor, where one of the executive suites still retains the wood paneling that was present in the original chambers during the building’s venerable courthouse years. “Historic photos and blueprints of the original courthouse square, courthouse, and Art Deco annex grace the walls of every floor as windows into the past.” Classic monochrome photography complements modern, mixed media pieces referencing the Sierra Nevadas and Kaweah watershed by COS art professor Matt Rangel.

The nearby Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks continue to play a key role in the hotel’s existence, as it is conveniently located about an hour away from the parks’ entrance gate, amidst the bustle of vibrant Downtown Visalia. The hotel’s Park Package can elevate the park experience, as it includes a drawstring backpack filled with water, local snacks, and tips. Altogether, The Darling Hotel offers 32 upscale boutique rooms to both tourists and staycationing locals alike. “The Darling Hotel was named No. 19 of the world’s ‘Hottest New Hotels’ by TripAdvisor, in the annual Best of the Best Awards,” Garcia shares proudly. A suite of amenities, including a meeting and conference room, the North Courtyard event space, a heated outdoor pool and poolside terrace, a 24-hour fitness center, gated parking, daily stayover service, and a rooftop bar and restaurant that also provides room service are major perks and draws for guests.

The Darling Hotel offers far more than just luxurious accommodations and amenities,” assures Garcia. “It curates unique experiences tailored to discerning guests. The rooftop restaurant, Elderwood, provides a sophisticated dining experience with panoramic city views and locally sourced seasonal cuisine. The hotel’s versatile event spaces and professional staff cater to corporate meetings and social gatherings. With its attention to detail, The Darling ensures every guest’s stay is truly unforgettable.” Whether you’re seeking a place to host a modest celebration or a milestone event, or even a simple date night destination, The Darling Hotel is eager to make any occasion under their roof memorable.

If you are looking to participate rather than initiate, The Darling hosts plenty of public happenings all year round. Elderwood has numerous ongoing events. Tequila Tuesdays are designed with margarita lovers in mind and features tequila craft cocktails for $10, from 4:30PM to close. Date Night Wednesdays allow you to spoil your special someone and elevate your mid-week evenings with an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert to share for $100, from 4:30PM to close. Dueling Bartender Thursdays let patrons watch two master mixologists compete in crafting exclusive cocktails and then enjoy both said creations, before voting on a favorite for $25. Happy Hour allows guests to experience the rooftop for two hours, starting at 2:00PM, Monday through Friday, with $10 cocktails, $8 draft beers, and discounted snacks. Seasonal events include Tiki Takeovers, New Year’s celebrations, and various immersive dinner experiences.

Elderwood is indeed Visalia’s premier rooftop restaurant and cocktail lounge, as it brings locally inspired cuisine and creative cocktails to the Central Valley dining scene. “With stunning views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and Downtown Visalia from the rooftop, Elderwood offers both an intimate dining experience and personalized service, making it the perfect destination for an unforgettable experience at any time of the day,” professes Mariah Derington, Service Manager at Elderwood. “Inspired by local, seasonal ingredients that highlight Central California’s rich agricultural offerings, Elderwood stands out among Visalia restaurants for its delightfully fresh menu selections and creative cocktails.” The establishement continues to draw foodies from across the Central Valley with its seasonally updating menu.

Firmly rooted in its courthouse annex origins, The Darling Hotel now shines as the epitome of Art Deco design amidst a vastly modernized world. Now fashioned into one of Visalia’s hidden gems and beloved by locals, it is so much more than a place for travelers to rest their heads. It stands as a beacon of restoration, an emblem of love, and a testament to what a place can do for people. The community that comes together under the hotel’s roof is invested in a bigger picture, and those who gather on its rooftop create memories that will last a lifetime. Elderwood’s panoramic view and dedication to farm-to-table food and drink exemplify its commitment to big-picture integration. The Darling, with its air of grandeur amidst small-town charm, is one of those places that make the Central Valley so heartfully enduring.

Elegant Comfort that Reclines

It’s hard to imagine how many recliners are available at Fashion Furniture, when we have virtually every style, fabric, leather, power-lift, lay flat, glider, rocker, wall saver, petite and big boy recliner made. Merced’s El Capitan Hotel is a lot more than a pit-stop. Located midway between the Bay Area and the nearby Yosemite National Park, “El Capitan Hotel was originally constructed in 1872, built adjacent to the railroad tracks by the Central Pacific Railroad Company at Merced’s 16th and N Streets to serve train passengers en route to Yosemite,” recounts Robin Donovan, Managing Director of El Capitan Hotel. “In 1900, the hotel was sold to a group of local investors and razed to make room for a new train depot, with plans to rebuild. After some financial delays, El Capitan Hotel was rebuilt in its current location in 1912 on Main and M Streets in Downtown Merced,” Donovan explains. With 90 rooms, it was the largest hotel in the area, which is a bragging right it retains even today.

A new annex was added to the hotel in 1924, adding 33 rooms. However, “a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1931,” Donovan goes on. “El Capitan reopened in 1936, with the new annex as the main hotel. It continued to serve as a hotel throughout its storied history. In 2021, the hotel reopened after a full renovation as it stands today, with its restored, historically preserved Arbor Lane Wing and the newly built Main Street Wing. The hotel takes its name from Yosemite National Park’s stunning vertical rock formation, which translates to ‘The Chief’ or ‘The Captain’ in English.” The 114 rooms and suites of the hotel feature chicly furnished spacious layouts with modernized amenities.

It’s easy to see how the hotel’s design draws from the golden warmth of the surrounding area and reflects the frontier spirit of Merced’s storied past as a Western railroad hub. “The guest rooms use natural, hand-crafted materials and textures to reflect the surrounding landscape and draw the outside in. Architectural elements inspired by 19th century train depots underscore the history of Merced, and artwork celebrating the agricultural and

cultural traditions of the region add finishing touches to the accommodations,” elaborates Donovan. El Capitan wholeheartedly honors its roots while contributing to the current community and planning for Merced’s future.

“Impact is a key pillar for El Capitan Hotel,” Donovan asserts, so much so that it has had a Director of Impact since the 2021 relaunch. It supports the Merced community through a variety of programs and initiatives year-round. “The Community Love Room Donation program allows guests to book a future stay and have $10 from each room per night benefit a local charity that changes each month.” Donovan shares. El Capitan supports several local programs that offer education and training opportunities in the hospitality industry, including Hospitality Career Academy, Vocational Education Housekeeping Program, and Restore Merced. Under the hotel’s management and located on the other end of the block, the recently restored, historic Mainzer Theater regularly hosts inclusive community events, live entertainment, and movie screenings.

Food is another pillar of El Capitan Hotel’s entertainment and attractions. Chief among them is the Rainbird restaurant, which debuted expanded hours and updated menus by its newly appointed Executive Chef, Evan Morrison, in January 2024. “The dining destination, which originally opened its doors in February 2022, transitioned from prix-fixe tasting menus for dinner and brunch to daily a-la-carte breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings. The refreshed menus continue to feature artisanal fare, wine, and spirits that pay homage to the ranchers, farmers, cheesemakers, bakers, distillers, and winemakers that have re-fashioned Merced and the Central Valley into one of California’s best-kept epicurean secrets. Rainbird is open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with special holiday brunches on occasion,” says Donovan.

In fact, “In the first-ever Michelin Guide for hotels, announced in Spring 2024, El Capitan Hotel is featured as a recommended property,” Donovan proudly reveals as one of the many accolades earned by the restaurant. “The hotel was named a finalist in the 18th annual Hospitality Design HD Awards in the ‘Midscale Hotel Public Space Category.’ Its signature restaurant, Rainbird, received the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator in 2023, recognizing the restaurant’s well-chosen selection of wines. Rainbird also received a Sunset Travel Award from Sunset Magazine in 2022 for its transcendent menu, establishing it as one of the best in the West.”

Three other culinary establishments are available to patrons. Mainzer, open daily for lunch and dinner, with brunch on weekends, offers elevated American comfort food along with craft cocktails, a self-serve beer wall, and Happy Hours from Sunday to Wednesday. Native Son is the hotel’s on-site coffee shop, open daily for coffee and cocktails with grab-and-go bites available. EC Courtyard, positioned on the ground floor, is open seasonally from Tuesday to Saturday and offers Rainbird’s menu with a full bar, served al fresco in a garden setting.

In line with their community involvement mantra, El Capitan’s restaurants consistently organize food and drink pairings and other events that bring together Merced’s residents. “Rainbird regularly holds collaborative wine dinners with regional wineries and holiday brunches for Mother’s Day, Easter, and more,” explains Donovan. “Mainzer hosts themed brunches, beer dinners, drag shows, movie nights, live concerts, Pride Month happenings, and various other offerings,” such as live entertainment while dining, from bands to drag shows to DJ sets. “EC Courtyard, open seasonally, has jazz nights on select evenings.” Even Bobby’s Market, a quaint store on the main floor, offers a selection of snacks and local wares.

El Capitan has draws for locals and destination-seekers alike. Some 3,328 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space make it ideal for destination weddings, corporate meetings, and special celebrations, especially given its location in the heart of Downtown Merced. Several of its booking offers cater to guest preferences, such as the Community Love package for local charities; the Lo-Cals Only package for staycations; and the collaborative Lasting Adventures package, which provides local adventure guide service. For those who like to maintain their workout routines while away, El Capitan has a 24-hour access fitness center. The hotel is also pet-friendly.

“El Capitan Hotel is truly a Central Valley original, with its history, dedication to impact, and impressive culinary and wine offerings,” believes Donovan. Rainbird became the first-of-its-kind fine dining restaurant in the region and continues to impress and evolve. Each of the hotel’s restaurants prepares artisanal fare and cocktails that pay homage to the makers who have refashioned Merced into one of California’s best-kept foodie secrets. With thoughtful touches, such as in-room record players and access to a selection of records in the lobby, as well as pour-over coffee service, a steamer, and premium bath products in each room, guests might never want to leave their rooms. But at El Capitan, anyone can explore the great outdoors and then retreat to the comforts of what is surely the perfect wanderlust home-base.

Harris Ranch has evolved greatly over the years, but its commitment to hospitality has remained steadfast.

“Operating as the hospitality division of Harris Farms, Inc., the ‘Harris Ranch Restaurant’ first welcomed guests in 1977,” says Easton Kerby, Content Marketing Specialist at Harris Ranch Resort, regarding the then-new development in Coalinga. It originally opened with only a main restaurant, coffee shop, country store, and service station for transit guests traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco. “In 1987, the hotel was opened adjacent to the restaurant complex, and the ‘Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant’ was born. Over the last 47 years, the business has expanded tremendously to include four dining venues, a country store, a hotel, a gas station, a 98-stall Tesla charging station, a variety of EV chargers, an airstrip, and a luxury RV Park that is currently being built.”

These new additions commanded a new name. “In honor of this expansion and to accurately represent the upscale, modern amenities available to guests, the company rebranded in 2023 to officially become the Harris Ranch Resort.” However, the look has remained the same. “As a family-owned business, our owners John and Carole Harris have thoughtfully crafted the look and feel of the Harris Ranch Resort to ensure that every detail transports guests to a relaxing paradise,” asserts Kerby, albeit in the middle of the Central Valley. The exterior is in the Spanish hacienda style, with quintessential features such as stucco walls, clay roof tiles, wood accents, and fountains. The Harris Ranch Resort is an oasis where Interstate 5 meets Highway 198.

“Our Harris Ranch Hotel boasts a wide variety of well-appointed rooms and suites with modern amenities, each designed with your comfort in mind,” Kerby professes. “Hotel guests can enjoy our Olympic-style heated pool, three Jacuzzi spas, and our Harris Ranch Pool Bar for poolside drinks and dishes.” At check-in, each guest receives a freshly baked cookie from their in-house bakery. Well-appointed modern Western-style accommodations

cater to travelers seeking rest and relaxation as seamlessly as those traveling for either business or pleasure. “Our interior was meticulously designed by Mrs. Harris. Not only did she structure our restaurant complex interior to match our ranch-style roots, she brilliantly designed our 153 hotel rooms and our Garden Ballroom, hand-selecting each piece of artwork, fabric, and décor.”

Guests have numerous outlets to explore while stopping or staying at Harris Ranch. “With three award-winning dining venues, shopping at the Harris Ranch Country Store, and a large range of on-site amenities for guests and travelers alike, we invite you to ‘Shop. Stay. Dine.’ and experience all we have to offer!” exclaims Kerby. In addition to the hotel, Harris Ranch is especially known for its culinary offerings. In fact, “Restaurant Business, a leading industry publication, ranks the Harris Ranch Resort 29th nationally and ranks us the third highest-earning independent restaurant in California, as listed in the prestigious Top 100 Independent Restaurants list for 2023.”

Three on-site restaurants make it easy to indulge. “Our Harris Ranch Restaurants are recognized for our ‘farm-to-fork’ philosophy and for only serving the finest USDA Choice and Prime steaks—whether you are seeking an unparalleled fine dining experience in our renowned Prime Steakhouse, casual dining in the Ranch Kitchen, or a little relaxation in the Horseshoe Lounge,” lists Kerby. The Ranch Kitchen and Horseshoe Lounge offer a true farm-to-table meal, as the menus also boast a supporting cast of seasonal fruits and vegetables, homegrown on Harris Ranch farmland. For an elevated dining experience, the Prime Steakhouse, led by Executive Chef Brendon Eddington, expertly crafts each dish to exceed expectations—given its resulting reputation, reservations are strongly encouraged. But if on-the-go is what you’re after, the Express BBQ, which welcomes guests with irresistible aromas wafting from their 25-foot custom smoker out front, offers Harris Ranch beef tri-tip, brisket, and ribs.

In addition to the unparalleled accommodations and dining options at the Harris Ranch Resort, our complex is also home to our beautifully landscaped outdoor courtyard and elegant Garden Ballroom,” shares Kerby, “both of which are available for your perfect wedding location!” Harris Ranch Resort offers unmatched amenities that help create a show-stopping event. “You can count on our trusted and experienced event specialists to ensure that you and your guests have a memorable experience.”

Yet weddings and travel aren’t the only reasons to make Harris Ranch a destination year-round. “Throughout the year, we excitedly host numerous events including Winemaker Dinners in partnership with renowned wineries, ‘Beerfests’, Cars & Coffees, holiday brunches in our Grand Ballroom, special menus in our restaurants, Cookies with Santa, and more!” On most Friday and Saturday nights, the Horseshoe Lounge hosts live music in the evening. Facilitating these get-togethers is a cornerstone of the business’s foundation, as being a heavily involved community partner is at the heart of Harris Ranch Resort.

“We believe in giving back to the community that supports us, which is why we actively engage in various local donations and sponsorships,” Kerby shares. For example, the Jack A. Harris Memorial Scholarship Foundation—established by John C. Harris in 1981 in honor of his late father, the founder of Harris Farms, Inc.—provides financial assistance to eligible high school or college students in pursuit of higher education. Kerby is proud to say, “To date, Harris Farms, Inc. has distributed over 2.5 million dollars in scholarships!”

Their on-site efforts consist of yearly events aimed at giving back and fostering community relations. Cars & Coffee is a partnership with a selected local animal shelter, for which money is raised through various raffle donations as well as on-site animal adoptions during the event. Their Employee Health Fair hosts nearly 500 employees and their families for free essential health care services, fun family activities, free food, and more. “From supporting local schools and charities to sponsoring community events and initiatives,” imparts Kerby, “our efforts are aimed at making a positive impact.”

The Harris family has undeniably been a prominent name in the hospitality industry for generations. Known for their commitment to quality and service, their legacy continues to live on today at the Harris Ranch Resort. “We pride ourselves on being a family-owned business that is committed to our values of Western hospitality, serving award-winning cuisine hinged upon our ‘farm-to-fork’ philosophy, and our dedication to unparalleled customer service,” Kerby assures. Harris Ranch is not just the ultimate dining destination but also an oasis. The plethora of fueling and charging options make it more than just a place to dine or stay—it’s a one-stop solution for every traveler’s needs. Whether you’re driving or flying in, Harris Ranch Resort is where the West unwinds.

Château du Sureau will transport you to Europe from the Sierra Nevada foothills. This elegant, nine-acre, castle-like retreat is a mere 16 miles from the southern gate of Yosemite National Park. “The Château was built in 1992 by Erna Kubin-Clanin, an Austrian-born lady, who started The Elderberry House restaurant in 1983. The estate joined Relais & Châteaux in 1994,” recounts Rani Grube, Director of Operations and Maîtresse de Maison at Château du Sureau. “In 2017, Bernard Rosenson purchased the Château from Erna, with the same mindset of creating a culinary oasis inspired by France in the Sierra foothills. Being surrounded by the inspiring Yosemite Valley, we want guests to feel the essence and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.”

Upon arrival, a truly magical feeling takes hold. “The service is genuine and personalized. You feel like you are the kings and queens of your own castle,” Grube gushes. “The grounds are tranquil and restoring. The meals are creative and over the top. There’s something about this place that just can’t be recreated.” Its exclusivity is undeniable—the Château includes 10 graciously-appointed and uniquely-named guest rooms. Visitors may also book the private Villa du Sureau, consisting of two king-sized bedroom suites, office space, a grand salon, a wet bar, a dining terrace, and a private spa. “The Château has always been a hotel, never a residence,” notes Grube, adding that it holds a AAA Five Diamond.

Community is key at the Château. “Giving back to our schools, sponsoring the high school and youth teams is of utmost importance,” states Grube. “We find giving back to food banks to be really important. We donate to children’s hospitals and local causes.” But their involvement and outreach do not stop there. “We have a great set of programs year-round,” Grube goes on, “such as cooking classes with our executive chef, wine classes and tastings with our sommelier, live music on the patio, wine dinners with incredible wineries, a monthly high tea service, holiday dinners like New Year’s Eve and Christmas, and mixology classes and tastings,” all of which are available to the public amongst their array of seasonal events.

The Elderberry House, the Château’s on-site restaurant, has long been hailed as a premier fine-dining destination. “Our mentality with dinner is to bring our local setting to your table,” imparts Grube, referencing nearby farms and Yosemite. “The meal will be delicious and beautifully presented. Our drinks are seasonal and are built with the same mindset as our dinner menu, pairing the seasons to your meal.” The sommelier will gladly offer wine recommendations, too. Down in The Cellar, clad in cozy stone walls, plan to sit, sip, and snack on small bites. The dining establishment was awarded Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence in 2020 and recognized in OpenTable’s 2023 Diner’ Choice.

Each room at the Château du Sureau is uniquely decorated to emulate 18th and 19th century royalty, the immaculately curated gardens resemble the gardens of Versailles, and the Spa du Sureau menu offers services enhanced by traditional European elements. The Elderberry House curates an exquisite dining experience with local ingredients using French flair. A plethora of amenities—such as a welcome check-in beverage and snack, a bottle of wine in each room, gourmet breakfast each day, and the best linen in the world to sleep on—spoil guests from the moment they arrive. Personalized concierge services include tours to Yosemite, as well as special events like weddings. At Château du Sureau, it is easy to live your own fairytale.

The Padre Hotel is known as one of Bakersfield’s newest yet oldest treasures. “Constructed in 1928 amidst the oil boom of the Central Valley, The Padre Hotel embodies the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style and was a symbol of California’s emerging glamour,” explains Stacy Warner, Executive Vice President of Eat.Drink.Sleep. Hospitality Group. “In 2010, a substantial restoration project was undertaken to revive its splendor, with meticulous preservation of many original architectural features. Honoring the region’s history, the hotel retained its original name and iconic neon sign.”

The hotel boasts 112 luxurious rooms and suites, as well as multiple dining options and meeting spaces that were upgraded in 2024. “The décor is cowboy chic, celebrating California’s past while embracing the region’s dynamic modern day,” explains Warner. Annual events include Bakersfield Unplugged, a showcase for Bakersfield’s renowned music scene, a spooky multi-level Halloween party, and a NYE silent disco.” Being a historical landmark in Downtown Bakersfield, “the restoration of Padre Hotel serves as a driver to downtown’s revitalization and a cultural hub,” she professes.

There is also access to a fitness center and an event space, dining options at The Padre Hotel are a major attraction for both locals and travelers. Like the surrounding Yosemite Valley, The Ahwahnee commands a sense of awe. What has been dubbed the “crown jewel” of the National Park lodges is also a trip back in time. “Commissioned in the 1920s in the pursuit of drawing more affluent visitors to Yosemite National Park, The Ahwahnee is a testament to the vision and perseverance of American ingenuity,” imparts Chelsie Layman, Director of Communications for Yosemite Hospitality. “More than 5,000 tons of stone, 1,000 tons of steel, and 30,000 feet of lumber were transported through the mountains to create the hotel.” The hotel’s precise location rewards guests with stunning views of Yosemite’s most recognizable cliffs and waterfalls. Soon after it was established, news spread globally about this marvelous new hotel, and nearly a century later, The Ahwahnee still attracts visitors from all over the world.

Influence drawn from the designs of Art Deco, Native American, Middle Eastern, and the Arts & Crafts Movement can be seen throughout the hotel’s architecture. “Its towering ceilings, massive stone fireplaces, intricately hand-stenciled beams, and hand-made stained-glass windows harken back bygone eras and cultural traditions—all masterfully combined under one roof,” beams Layman. “The Ahwahnee is an integral part of Yosemite and a destination in its own right while visiting Yosemite National Park.” In recognition of its heritage, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered a National Historic Landmark. Some 97 rooms and 24 guest cottages provide visitors with a variety of accommodation options and views of Half Dome, Glacier Point, and Yosemite Falls.

The hotel’s amenities include a heated outdoor swimming pool and mountain Wi-Fi. It is also ADA-accessible and provides shuttle access, valet parking, and concierge services. Rooms feature amenities such as a Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer, flat screen TV, refrigerator, telephone, Nespresso® coffee maker, rollaway cribs upon request, pillow-top mattresses, an iron with an ironing board, and daily housekeeping. Even day visitors to Yosemite Valley can experience the hotel’s splendor. The Ahwahnee also has a gift shop that primarily sells products made by local artisans, as well as a decadent sweet shop. Its comfortable bar and lounge areas entice guests to pause and admire the surrounding views. The Ahwahnee Dining Room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Eating at The Ahwahnee is a treat because it is a destination dining spot that evokes a feeling of grandeur and opulence. “We are proud to announce that The Ahwahnee Dining Room is now open to the public,” says Layman. “Service will continue in a buffet-style featuring many classic menu favorites, including hand-carved prime rib and more.” Notably, one meal at the hotel stands apart from the rest. Held since 1929, “The Bracebridge Dinner is the most well-known, but other events include a vintner’s event and special holiday meals throughout the year (Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, New Year, etc.).”

“The destination of queens and presidents alike, this distinctive Yosemite hotel offers a perfect balance of history, hospitality, and elegance,” emphasizes Layman, “and is one of the most iconic buildings in the National Park System.” The Ahwahnee’s stunning interior and exterior were specifically designed with abundant seating and breathtaking views to highlight the natural setting for tourists and overnight guests alike. The mountainous grandeur of The Ahwahnee can be experienced year-round, allowing visitors the opportunity to see one of the most iconic national parks in spring bloom, summer splendor, fall colors, and winter white, all from the comfort of an architectural masterpiece that transcends time.

California DOUBLE

From Snow to Surf Between Sunrise and Sunset

Features Contributor Cassie Yoshikawa Photographer Ka’eo Yoshikawa Photography LLC

When I tell people about my plans for the next twelve hours, their first assumption is that I am an adrenaline junkie. Who else but an extreme sports enthusiast would attempt to snowboard and surf within the same calendar day?

But in fact, I am a beginner at both of these sports. A recent graduate of the bunny hill, this morning would be my third time down a mountain on a snowboard. And when I got to the coast, well, I’d figure that out when I got there. Nobody needed to know that this afternoon would be my first time on a surfboard. Ever.

For me, completing the California Double wasn’t about being good at board sports. It was my love letter to my home—one of the only places in the world where it is even possible to accomplish such a feat.

The California Double is so named because there are many places in the state where you can accomplish this challenge in a comfortable climate. The Sierra Nevadas and the San Bernadino Mountains both have ski resorts within a three-hour drive from the Pacific Coast. This means that you can complete the Double from almost anywhere in California all winter long.

Still, the most ideal time is when the weather has warmed up in early April. When I did it, there was still enough snow for ski resorts to operate, and the clock had just sprung forward, providing extended daylight to make it to the coast that afternoon.

Southern California is the easiest region to do the California Double with six ski resorts within 100 miles of the coast. It also has the warmest water for surfing at beaches like Venice, Redondo, or Huntington. Plus, Snow Summit at Big Bear offers night skiing, allowing you to go from sea to ski even after the sun sets.

Conversely, Northern California has the coldest weather and water in the spring with surf beaches like Linda Mar, Half Moon Bay, and Santa Cruz averaging 54°F. The closest snowboarding to the Bay Area is one of the sixteen resorts around Tahoe, with Sugar Bowl being the furthest West. But as a Central Californian, I only had one decision to make: China Peak or Alta Sierra. Both are the same distance to Pismo Beach.

The California Double requires more than perfect conditions—it requires perfect timing. Start with the opening hour of your ski resort. Reserve ninety minutes to board, then factor in the outfit change, lunch, traffic, and gassing up. Calculate the four-hour average drive to the coast. Be hyper-aware of sunset, as you’ll want to be out of the water with a little daylight to spare. You’ll find that sticking to a strict half-hourly schedule is necessary.

My morning starts at 7:30AM, as I depart the slightly chilly but very snow-less Fresno to make the ninety-minute drive to China Peak, aiming to secure a rental at opening. While this isn’t the ideal month for shredding fresh powder, the crowds aren’t deterred from gleaning the last bits of winter. I take the lift up and gently zig-zag down the mountain, a beginner technique my former instructor called “Falling Leaf.” Between waiting for the lift and my slow descent, I have to call it a morning after one run at 10:30AM.

I should mention that completeing the California Double is more about achieving a bucket list item than getting your money’s worth out of each activity. After ninety minutes to briefly caffeinate back in Fresno, it’s another hour to stop for lunch in Kettleman City. At 1:00PM, I eat a Double-Double at In-N-Out because what else would you eat on such a day? This morning already feels like yesterday, but we are only halfway through the challenge and halfway to the coast.

At 3:00PM, we pull into Shell Beach Surf Shop. I rent a wetsuit and an eight-foot foam board, which is recommended for first-timers. Lessons would have been ideal, but we were burning daylight, and the rental shop closed at 6:00PM. Surely, Falling Leaf would also apply to ocean waves? I struggle for a solid hour, misunderstanding the water, slipping off the board, and getting buffeted by the waves. But on my last swell, something magical happens. For a whole four seconds, I stand up.

To some, this California Double challenge might seem like a waste. In the grand scheme of the day, I spent forty minutes on the boards, the majority of my hours consumed with traversing the Central Valley. But to me, those four seconds were the capstone of living here. Being a Californian is more than snowboarding the Sierras or surfing Shell Beach. It’s the access to adventure in the 224 miles between.
