In addition to running a number of successful businesses, Bob was also a well-known philanthropist who realized the value of supporting his community. He donated generously to many causes, hospitals, universities, non-profits and educational institutions in the San Joaquin Valley. He was always ready, willing and able to mentor anyone who looked to learn from his experience and wisdom.
In 1995, Brent began working for his grandfather, Earl, at Wawona Packing and Bob saw early on that Brent had the desire and ability to carry on the Smittcamp standards of hard work, dedication and excellence that had been instilled in him. Over the next 17 years, Bob and Brent built Wawona Packing to be one of the largest and most successful tree fruit packing companies in the world, farming over 8,000 acres and selling fresh tree fruit nationally and internationally.
Hard work, integrity and innovation are at the core of the Smittcamp family’s principles. These principles and philosophies have been passed down through generations. “My father, Bob, had a tireless work ethic, great business acumen, uncompromising integrity and always preached the importance of giving back to the community.” Brent, too, leads by example. “My role, like many others, is to give back to our community and leave it in a better place for my kids and future generations,” he believes.
Like his father and grandfather, Brent strives to uphold these philanthropic principles by continuously learning, improving and cultivating meaningful relationships. This begins with a genuine concern for the community. “My father always adhered to the ‘if there’s a problem, find a solution’
philosophy. Unfortunately,” Brent admits, “here in the Central Valley, there was an obvious gap in the quality of neuroscience care. His vision was to build a world-class facility to bring all aspects of neuro care under one roof. He thought this would be a great resource to attract and retain top doctors and surgeons from across the country.”
In 2018, Bob laid the financial foundation to address this growing need with an $11 million donation to advance neuroscience care at Community Health System and better his community. Named in his honor, the Bob Smittcamp Family Neurosciences Institute is set to become the premier destination for neuroscience care between San Francisco and Los Angeles. By championing the development of this leading center in his hometown, Brent, like his father, is ensuring that state-of-the-art treatment is readily accessible to friends, family and neighbors.
Today, Brent is committed to making that vision a reality. Once completed, the Bob Smittcamp Family Neurosciences Institute will serve as a one-stop-shop on the Community Regional Medical Center campus, located next to the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. The facility will offer most outpatient neuroscience services in one location, allowing patients to visit their care team and receive treatments in the same space.
Local neuro care is important to Brent for many reasons. “A new neuroscience center will help recruit top neurological doctors and surgeons, expedite long wait times and house all neurology and neuroscience clinics, neuro rehab, physical and occupational therapy and diagnostics, all in one place. Once this project is completed, Central Valley residents won’t have to travel to LA or the Bay Area for quality neuro care.”
“I hope that the Smittcamp legacy will continue from generation to generation...”
This need hits close to home. “My cousin had a serious aneurysm, and I had an industrial accident at my packing facility,” he reveals. “In both cases, we had to seek care outside of the Valley. Fortunately, we had the means and resources to do that. However, my father wanted first-class neuro care for every person that lives in our community.”
After Bob passed away in March 2021, a fundraising committee was formed to support Brent’s efforts to continue his father’s vision. The committee, comprised of local philanthropists Melissa Der Manouel, Matty Matoian and Craig Saladino, has raised over $18 million, thanks to Brent’s leadership and the support of Community’s Office of Philanthropy.
However, Brent points out, “We need another $7 million to begin construction and an additional $5 million to complete the project. With the current momentum and the support of residents across the Valley, I’m hopeful we can hit our goal by the end of the year. That would allow us to open the institute in 2026.”
Of all the causes out there, Brent is eager to support this one for several reasons. “First and foremost,” he begins, “I would like to get my father’s vision to the finish line. Second, with a community of our size, we should have accessible, quality neuro care for all our residents.”
“Lastly, most people don’t realize how many injuries and disorders fall under the neuro care umbrella,” Brent emphasizes. “In fact, I think it’s important to draw attention to them. They include Alzheimer’s, cognitive/behavioral disorders, concussions, dementia, epilepsy, headaches/migraines, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke and
many more. This list doesn’t even include various neurological injuries and trauma.”
Community Health System supports a five-county service area, home to roughly two million people. Until a few years ago, Community had only 10 to 15 neuroscience physicians, but today it boasts more than 90 neuroscience providers. This number continues to grow under the leadership of Dr. Ian Johnson, who heads Community’s neurosciences program. Because of this concerted effort, Community can offer nearly every sub-specialty within neurosciences locally—a passion shared by both Bob and Brent.
“I’ve been extremely impressed with the team that Community has assembled,” Brent says, “Dr. Ian Johnson, medical director of neurosciences, has done an incredible job recruiting topflight doctors from across the United States. He’s done this in a relatively short amount of time, and a new, dedicated neurosciences center should only help these efforts. The hospital, along with the board, is committed to making this project a priority.”
Brent’s family is well-known for their generosity and investment in the community they call home—from his grandfather, Earl, to his father, Bob, and now to him. “I hope that the Smittcamp legacy will continue from generation to generation, encompassing the values of my grandparents, my parents and all my aunts and uncles. Giving back to those less fortunate and to a community that has been very good to our entire family,” he professes. Brent is instilling these values in his two children. Hard-working, intuitive and principled, Brent embodies the qualities of a change-maker, and the Central Valley is a better place because of him.
baby pumpkin LOVE
Editorial Director Lauren Barisic
Contributing Chefs Greg Vartanian & David Vartanian
Photographer Don Dizon
“Pumpkin Watch” at The Vintage Press (VP) begins in early September, marking the seasonal debut of Visalia’s most famous recipe on the first day of fall. VP’s Roasted Whole Baby Pumpkins have become arguably the most anticipated dish in Visalia. “People ask for them in July,” admits Chef David Vartanian, who demonstrates how to prepare this fan-favorite dish live at VP’s Recipe Club cooking events during the autumn months.
The Vartanian brothers, Greg and David, oversee the restaurant that their father, John, established in 1966. Today, Greg spearheads the VP’s overall operations, while David has taken over the kitchen and menu development—a role Greg held for three decades. The Roasted Whole Baby Pumpkins are, in fact, Greg’s original creation. “He did it, but I take all the credit for it, though,” Chef David chuckles.
The Vintage Press is renowned for its extensive wine offerings—hailed as “one of the best wine lists in the world” by Wine Spectator magazine—and an upscale farm-to-table menu that changes with the seasons. Any meal at this traditional
fine-dining establishment is a delight. Four distinct dining rooms and a charming garden create an old-world dining experience, making pumpkin season even more delightful.
VP’s Roasted Whole Baby Pumpkin emerged from a desire to utilize seasonal abundance. “About 40 years ago, Greg said we were looking for something for fall, and he developed the recipe. He didn’t get it from anywhere else; he came up with it originally,” Chef David recounts of his brother’s culinary creation. “He was going to use a big pumpkin to do something with, and he saw all these little ones around, which weren’t being utilized at the time very much.” Now, they are a seasonal staple.
The baby pumpkin love lasts as long as the squash supply remains available. Last year, it was done early. The goal is to have them through mid-December, though they have occasionally stayed on the menu as late as January. So, get them while you can, or try making them yourself! Upon VP’s recommendation, this recipe serves six as a first course.
Roasted Whole Baby Pumpkins with Jarlsberg, Spicy Smoked Chicken and Cream
6 baby pumpkins
6 oz. Jarlsberg cheese
6 oz. smoked chicken, diced
2 tbs. hot chili sauce
1 onion, diced
1 tbs. butter
Instructions
6 oz. heavy cream
1 tbs. chives
Salt
Freshly ground pepper
Whole pink peppercorns (for garnish)
Place the whole pumpkins in a baking pan. Cover the pan with foil and bake in a 325-degree oven for 45 minutes, or until the pumpkins are soft.
Remove the tops of the pumpkins with a sharp knife. Discard the seeds, and season the insides with salt and pepper.
Heat the butter in a sauté pan, and cook the onion over medium heat until soft. In a bowl, combine the smoked chicken, Jarlsberg cheese, cooked onion, and chives. Mix well and season with salt, pepper, and chili sauce to taste.
Fill the pumpkins with the smoked chicken mixture, then pour one ounce of heavy cream into each pumpkin. Place the tops back onto each pumpkin. Roast them in a 350-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
To serve, warm six plates. Place one prepared pumpkin on each plate along with one ounce of Lemon Butter Sauce. Garnish with whole pink peppercorns.
Lemon Butter Sauce
2 shallots, diced
1 cup white wine
1 oz. Champagne vinegar
2 oz. heavy cream
6 oz. sweet cream butter
Instructions
1 lemon, juiced
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
Salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 tbs. chives
In a saucepan, combine the shallots, wine, and vinegar. Bring to a simmer and cook until reduced by half. Add the heavy cream and simmer until reduced by half again. Over low heat, whisk in the sweet cream butter, one piece at a time. Season with mustard, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Add the chives just before serving.
PERFECT MENU the
Features Contributor Vicki DeFrancesco
Photographer Cait Fry
The holidays are upon us, and for me, there is nothing more special than creating a delicious meal and gathering around the table to share it with family and friends.
Having hosted many holiday dinner parties over the years, I’ve learned that the “perfect menu” can often be overwhelming and stressful. Our social media feeds are filled with elaborate dishes that seem much easier and more flavorful than they actually are. With experience, I’ve come to realize that being present and enjoying the moment with my guests is far more satisfying than spending hours on a showstopper recipe that leaves me frustrated and pressed for time.
Before you begin planning your holiday menus this year, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what the holidays truly mean to you and your family. Make a list of the special ways you want to focus your time and energy this season and place it on the fridge or in your purse—somewhere you can easily refer back to it. This simple habit has helped me prioritize my time, allowing me to focus on what truly matters most.
It has also transformed the way I feed people. Nobody understands better than I do how easy it is to get caught up in creating the perfect menu for a dinner party—the one that demands all your time, energy, and focus. I would wager that crafting the ideal menu isn’t on your list of priorities this holiday season… By creating this list and implementing these simple changes, I’ve made an incredible difference in how I prepare for gatherings.
STICK TO TRADITION.
The holidays come once a year—you don’t need to reinvent the wheel (or the menu) to make them amazing! This is a time for celebrating meaningful traditions and savoring family recipes. While I love the idea of adding a creative twist to an old recipe, it’s the familiarity of these flavors and aromas that makes holiday meals special.
I believe these cherished recipes, shared year after year, keep us connected to those we love and to those we have lost. Celebrate these treasured recipes this year by serving them on a beautiful new platter or plate. Print the recipe on festive stationery and use them as place cards for your guests. These dishes are part of your family’s story, and they belong on the holiday table. Stick to the dishes that you and your family know and love. I promise you will never regret it.
UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY.
One of my top tips for holiday entertaining is to take advantage of shopping conveniences. We no longer have to endure long lines at the grocery store, and I can’t tell you what a game-changer this has been for me. Download your favorite grocery store app and make your grocery list online from the comfort of your home. Then, schedule a pick-up time. It’s that easy! I shop for pantry items a week in advance and then order produce and perishables a few days before. This is also a great way to compare prices and ensure you’re getting the best deals.
KNOW YOUR CROWD.
Understanding your guests is crucial when planning a menu, especially regarding any food restrictions. If I’m expecting a first-time guest, I always ask about food allergies—this helps you to be prepared in the event that they do. It is also a great way to make your guests feel welcome, knowing there will be dishes they can safely enjoy. Having an accurate headcount when creating holiday meals is essential; it allows you to plan your dishes knowing exactly how many servings of each recipe you will need.
FORAGE AND GATHER.
This may come as a shock, but you really don’t have to make every dish yourself. There are many wonderful bakeries, restaurants, cottage businesses, and food trucks that make amazing dishes we all love! Whether it’s an appetizer, entrée, side dish, or dessert, these businesses offer fantastic options. Adding just one dish to your menu that you can order out will enhance your spread without sacrificing your time and energy.
REFER BACK TO “THE LIST” OFTEN!
The most important advice I can offer in planning any menu is to always include your presence. Food is love, and I believe how we feed people is just as important as what we feed them. The recipes and dishes may be on display, but it’s the connections shared at your table that will be the most memorable. Your guests might not remember the incredible Bolognese or decadent chocolate cake, but I assure you they will never forget how you made them feel.

The Fund by Indian Subcontinent Heritage (FISH) Gala was held on Saturday, September 28th at Holland Park West. There, some 400 guests came out to support the event’s beneficiary, CASA of Fresno and Madera Counties. FISH is a philanthropic initiative established in 2017 by seven individuals of South Asian heritage, dedicated to making a positive impact in California’s Central Valley. Currently housed under the Central Valley Community Foundation, FISH partners with local non-profit organizations to raise awareness of social issues and promote philanthropy within the South Asian community. In recent years, the board has expanded to include exceptional community leaders who, despite demanding careers and family commitments, volunteer time on weekends and evenings to this cause. In its inaugural year, FISH raised $10,000, and each subsequent year has surpassed the previous total, culminating in over $100,000 raised last year with a repeat performance this year. The event included tarot card readings and a magician, Bollywood live entertainment, and a live auction that included international trips and an adorable mini mountain doodle. The highest individual donation made was $10,000.

The California Teaching Fellows Foundation (CTFF) Annual Gala took place on Friday, September 27th at the Fort Washington Country Club. This year, CTFF celebrated their Silver Jubilee. In celebration of 25 years of service, CTFF awarded Michael Funk, the Director of the Expanded Learning Division at the California Department of Education, with the Silver Service Award for his commitment to serving youth through expanded learning programs and in support of CTFF’s mission. CTFF also acknowledged Pamela Hutton as the 2024 Educational Leader of the Year and highlighted two Teaching Fellow Alumna who are now educators in our community. The 240 attendees at the event helped to raise over $126,000 for the organization, which is on a mission to inspire the next generation of leaders with a passion for teaching and learning while impacting the lives of youth. This is done through providing scholarships to future educators, the Dream Initiative via tutors, and continued development of the next generation of leaders and educators in our community.
