NNestled alongside the San Joaquin River, this modern European remodel transports you to a serene countryside retreat. The property exemplifies how contemporary design principles can harmonize with classic European influences, creating spaces that feel both fresh and timeless. When I first met our clients, I was captivated by this beautiful property. The 3,300-square-foot home required a complete remodel, but it held immense potential. They envisioned a home that felt both timeless and modern.
The resulting design blends contemporary and traditional influences, emphasizing clean lines, minimalism, and the use of natural materials such as stone and oak wood. We retained the existing foundation layout but rearranged the floorplan and converted the garage for additional space. A new roof was added to create higher ceilings, allowing for larger windows that invite in more natural light.
Facing the large steel entry doors into the foyer, one can see directly through the living room’s expansive sliding doors. This grand view was a crucial detail upon entry for our clients. Adjacent to the foyer is the formal dining room. This is the only space with the original ceiling height, which adds a unique architectural feature. To open up the space, we went with a large window that frames the picturesque country view.
The land itself plays an integral role in the River House project. The wine cellar primarily stores wine produced by the clients on the property and features a moody dark paint. Across from the foyer is the powder bathroom, where we again selected a dark hue to bring contrast and warmth. Here, a wall-to-wall floating vanity and brass accents create high-impact yet cozy feels that align with the modern vibe.
Beyond the foyer lies the main living room, which invites you in with a large linear fireplace, picture windows, and an oversized sectional. The vaulted ceiling and exposed beams draw the eye upward, adding warmth to the space. It was essential for our clients to maintain a cozy yet minimal feel with an editorial touch. Thus, we chose neutral furniture pieces crafted from natural materials and vintage accents. The sliding doors in the living room open to a spacious patio, perfect for entertaining guests or enjoying the serene riverfront view.
The kitchen, which opens to the living room, incorporates classic European elements such as an apron-front sink, brass fixtures, and minimal lighting. These features coexist harmoniously with the European-made range, concealed appliances, and white oak cabinetry. The pantry, originally the front porch, now boasts a steel door and matching details. A large island serves as a centralized gathering spot, making the space livable and inviting.
Down the hallway, the oak cabinetry continues into the kid’s bathroom and laundry room. In the primary bedroom, we selected a brick-look tile that complements the outdoor elements. The neutral color palette persists in this space, creating a serene and calming atmosphere. Moving to the primary bathroom, the stunning marble-look tile adds a touch of luxury, while the freestanding tub and spacious walk-in shower provide a spa-like feel.
Overall, the design of this beautiful home strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and warmth, resulting in a space that is visually stunning and inviting. Stepping onto the balcony, you can enjoy panoramic views of the vineyard, river, and farm animals. With every project, I take great pleasure in bringing my clients’ dreams to life while remaining true to our design aesthetic. The River House beautifully exemplifies this philosophy. Every corner of the home tells its own unique story, but remains seamlessly connected to the whole.
Built in 1991, this grand house on beautiful Van Ness Boulevard was in need of a refresh. Its original pastel color scheme, floral wallpaper, and mismatched flooring did not reflect the homeowners’ simple and chic style. Once a prime example of classic architecture and refined elegance, the home had become outdated over the years. The new homeowners wished to honor its original architectural style while giving it a more contemporary look.
Upon my first visit, I was captivated by the expansive kitchen and living room spaces. I knew the possibilities for transformation were limitless. After careful consideration, the homeowners and I decided on an airy, neutral color palette, complemented by rich, luxurious materials.
In the kitchen, it was clear that we needed to enhance natural light. We installed three large windows along the back wall, overlooking the newly landscaped backyard and pool, which made the overall space feel larger and brightened up the kitchen.
The kitchen’s focal point is the marble-clad hood and surround. Sourced from Bedrosians, the marble slabs feature a bright pattern that accentuates the hood’s classic lines. The pillars extending to the floor around the new iLVE custom range create a stunning visual masterpiece.
The original kitchen had a linear island but lacked seating. Since the homeowners entertain frequently, we extended the kitchen island to provide ample seating. Soft, cushy counter stools add a chic and modern touch, beautifully complementing the chunky marble island.
One of my favorite features of the kitchen is the elegant new butler’s pantry. Custom cabinetry lines the walls of what was once a basic, open-shelved pantry. New marble countertops match those of the kitchen island and hood, while an iron and glass arch door offers a glimpse into this luxurious space.
Buttery alder custom cabinetry is a standout element in this kitchen remodel. The stark, sterile appearance of marble necessitated a warm, neutral base, leading us to select alder for its formal feel. After testing various finishes, we achieved the perfect shade of cerused caramel.
Originally, a large nook competed for attention in the kitchen. To balance the space, we slightly enclosed this area, creating a soft, angled banquette. This arrangement provides an artfully curated backdrop for the kitchen, allowing for a secondary focal point.
Adjacent to the kitchen hall is a new, luxurious laundry and utility room. Emerald is a favorite color of the homeowners, so we chose a relaxed olive green for the cabinets. Deco tile floors from Bedrosians, reminiscent of a Spanish motif, add a whimsical touch to the space.
In the grand living room, we aimed to keep it light and airy atmosphere while ensuring the space felt cozy. We added built-in open bookcases on either side of the fireplace and created a modern coffered ceiling. The color scheme remains light, and plush furniture pieces contribute warmth to the room.
The living room bar is another highlight of the space. Navy blue cabinets with mesh insets introduce a luxurious look, while an elevated marble slab featuring blues and coppers perfectly complements the cabinetry, enhancing the bar’s classic elegance. Artwork by Kristine Vogt beautifully ties in the blue tones of the cabinetry and the olive hues of the counter stools.
Throughout this interior design project, simple and light styling prevails. Ultimately, the house came together beautifully, achieving an elevated, modern feel with delightful nooks and crannies to enjoy. While it retains its traditional essence, it now exudes a chic vibe.
Idon’t always get to do a full house remodel—sometimes I’m called in to work on just a room or two. That was the case with this client, who wanted to redo two very outdated bathrooms. The couple had a great sense of style; they were young, hip, and modern. The wife had a refined Scandinavian aesthetic—something I don’t often see in Fresno—but I was all for it. We dove into the project headfirst, starting with the master bath and then moving on to the kids’ bath down the hall.
For the new master bath footprint, we decided to utilize the existing space along with the adjacent walk-in closet. The primary goal was to incorporate a large walk-in sauna and a steam shower. To maximize efficiency, we designed a large shower enclosure that also housed the bathtub.
The sauna was positioned centrally between the two vanities, custom-built at an angle to maximize flexibility throughout the space. Naturally, we included a makeup vanity, creating a storage niche and a small sitting area with decorative lighting, perfect for makeup and hair.
For the finishes, we opted for a neutral, warm palette. Natural wood tone cabinetry accents the rich, dark flooring. Bold porcelain complements the countertops and the interior of the shower. We selected simple yet beautiful lighting fixtures throughout the space, and luxury plumbing fixtures were chosen to add an extra touch of elegance.
For the kids’ bath down the hall, we worked with the existing footprint. The old tub had to be replaced, so we were able to reframe slightly to allow for a bigger tub. We wanted the two bathrooms to coordinate, but they didn’t have to match exactly. So, we kept the color palette similarly neutral to the master bath but lighted it up a bit.
For the cabinets, we chose a glazed white oak, and for the countertops, we went with a soft white quartz. We found a stunning clay tile at a local shop, Creative Tile, which we were able to use on the shower walls. This special tile brought a lot of richness and warmth to the space, making the entire room feel authentic and comfortable.
We had fun with the finishes in the kids’ bathroom as well, particularly the lighting. Unusual ceramic sconces from Cedar and Moss flank the pivoting mirrors, while discreet can lights illuminate the vanity. Wall-mounted faucets flow into dual vessel sinks that rest atop the counter, creating a spa-like atmosphere.
In both bathrooms, we faced spatial constraints, but we optimized every square inch to maximize flexibility and functionality. This bathroom pair took incredible planning and presented unique challenges, yet we were able to create sanctuary spaces within the home. In the end, the results were a success for both the client and designer.

Nick’s Wine Bar Cafe is poised to become your new favorite hidden gem if it isn’t already. Nestled in the back corner of Sam’s Italian Deli & Market, this Fresno landmark is a well-known destination for locals and travelers alike. Owners Nick and Kathryn Marziliano recently shared their restaurant refresh with CVLUX’s Editorial Director Lauren Barisic and Event Director & Producer Laura Thompson, along with Dr. Kathleen Behr, Lisa Bonadelle, Kelly Lilles, and Marina LaRocca for the latest installment of Shake+Stir.
An Easter-inspired tablescape was beautifully arranged with the help of local vendors. Neat bouquets of pastel-colored spring tulips were provided by Lou Gentile’s Flower Basket. For favors, Easter baskets and buckets filled with salted caramels and spring taffy were crafted by Vonda’s. Place cards from Modern Press Paper Studio guided guests to their seats for an unforgettable afternoon of wine tasting and Italian cuisine pairings.
Entering Nick’s Wine Bar Cafe feels akin to stepping into a speakeasy. Upon arrival at Sam’s Italian Deli & Market, patrons must navigate around the deli counter, past the wine corner, and through a door that leads into the reimagined space. Nick’s wine cellar remains prominently displayed against the back wall. All guests were welcomed with a glass of champagne featuring the crowd-favorite Veuve Clicquot Brut Cuvée.
The culinary journey began with two appetizers. Roasted Tomato Burrata was served alongside slices of grilled house-made focaccia. This bread is used for deli sandwiches and is available whole in the market. It also comes in tomato and olive varieties. “The grilling adds a wonderful touch to the focaccia,” Lisa remarked. “I’m going to try that myself!” A discussion about bread and its health benefits naturally followed.
Next up was the Schiacciata Nicola, a dish that showcases the bread. “The sandwich starts from the outside!” Kathryn exclaimed, explaining that Nick had perfected this new bread offering over time. It’s an airy, Tuscan-style flatbread, ideal for sandwiching imported mortadella, pistachio pesto, arugula, and a fig drizzle, creating the perfect bite.
Two additional dishes were presented for the soup and salad course with a 2022 Lewis Cellars Chardonnay. The Creamy Tuscan Chicken Orzo Soup is sure to warm the soul, regardless of the temperature outside. It features vegetables, cannellini beans, and orzo pasta, topped with a delightful crouton. Sam’s just introduced a soup-of-the-day, which sells out daily. Given how little remained in the soup bowls, it’s easy to see why!
Almost every table seated at the Wine Bar Cafe orders Nick’s Chicken Milanese Salad. A sliced, breaded chicken cutlet is served atop arugula tossed in a house-made lemon vinaigrette with capers, tomatoes, and shaved parmesan. It’s great to share, but can easily be a main. “I could eat this entire plate,” Kelly declared. “Paired with the Lewis Chardonnay, one of my favorites, this is a perfect meal.”
For the entrée, a delightful 2023 Belle Glos Rosé accompanied Lobster Ravioli, which was served in a rich vodka sauce. “The sauce is fantastic,” Kathleen enthusiastically noted. “I really enjoy the texture and how it complements the lobster filling.” Sam’s produces a number of pastas in-house, available in dried, fresh, and frozen options at the market.
Dessert featured a duo of treats in more ways than one. Affogato with Speed is Nick’s take on vanilla bean gelato topped with toasted pistachios and sea salt, accompanied by shots of hot espresso and espresso liqueur. “The Luxardo is a lovely touch,” Marina praised, as this alone can be a dessert in itself. There’s no right or wrong way to enjoy the trio, but traditionally, both shots are poured over the gelato.
Two more small sweet bites followed. Served on an oblong plate drizzled with caramel sauce were the Salted Truffle Brownie Bites and Spumoni Bites. Their two-bite size makes them perfect for sharing and extending a meal, especially when the conversation is too delightful to end. A final glass of red wine, 5 O’Clock Cabernet Time, beautifully complemented the chocolate flavors and drew the tasting menu to a close.
With great food and company, gatherings like these leave lasting memories and a desire to return. Nick’s Wine Bar Café makes it easy to do just that. Guests can enjoy the restaurant’s specialized menu and in addition to offerings from Sam’s deli counter, with full service from their incredibly friendly staff. Open Monday to Saturday from 10:00AM to 6:00PM, it’s the perfect spot for a quick bite, sharing a bottle, enjoying a glass, or indulging in a leisurely lunch. The Marzilianos invite you to experience their Italian hospitality in the heart of the Central Valley at Nick’s Wine Bar Café
“What a surprise this was! The hardest thing to wrap my head around is being a part of the history of country music. I’m truly humbled and want to thank every fan, every artist, and every listener for this great honor. Thanks for letting me, be me! I hope you’ll listen to the Rowdy Ride Home every afternoon on The Legend 105.5.”
