“We are enough” By Kealin Taylor-Martin Year Created: 2021 Medium: Multi-media on Canvas Dimensions: 12” x 16” (30.5cm x 40.5cm) My artwork relates to the standing on strong shoulders with the signs standing on the shoulders saying “say their names” and “we shall overcome” which are 2 of many quotes which were used during the ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests around the world. There are also names of many Black women who lost their lives on the half of the picture on the women’s head wrap and some of many Black men who lost their lives on the afro with the half on the man. This painting enlightens that Black people are strong even when people may look down on us. We continue to strive and thrive. This piece shows we bare more past our skin colours and after all the Black community has been through we stay strong. There are also symbols within the eyes the masculine side had the Black Lives Matter fist which symbolizes Black power and the feminine side has the peace sign in the eye which symbolizes all the peaceful protest we have had, even though the in some places the cops turned it into something else. The red, green, and yellow crayons around the painting is to symbolize the colours of Black History Month.

The “ Black is beautiful” represents that all shades of Black are beautiful and anyone who is Black should not wish to be anything but Black because our skin colour is beautiful too. The painting relates to the standing on strong shoulder theme with the Black Lives Matter written across the face because this is a topic that has been brought up recently and even though we are still struggling with Black rights our voices are being heard and will not be silenced. Last but not least I put both a Black man and women to represent that both genders have strong shoulders, we are going to change the future, and that we can accomplish anything we put our mind to.

The piece showcases some historical figures and how they have set examples for the youth of our country and generations to come. ‘My skin is a Lil Darker’ By Trinity Myrie Year Created: 2020 Medium: Spoken Word Recording We live in a world where it isn’t easy. for a person of colour to love their skin because of so much negativity that comes out of it. Our people experience discrimination every day whether it’s on the street or at school. The system we are born into was and is built against us. We‘ve been waiting too long for change so I use my work to become the change.

Standing with Ancestors By Kannammai Kannappan Year Created: 2021 Medium: Picture recreated from Google with food particles. Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 I love grand parents who are not with us now, as they are back home. To forget ones ancestors is like a river without a source or it is like tree without roots. Food is common to all people. So people should be treated equally, we should not differentiate based on color.

‘L’Ouverture.’ By Jaylah A. Hall Year Created: 2021 Medium: Digital Art Dimensions: 3000 x 4000px François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture is one of the many lesser known Black Heroes. He was a Hatian General that led the people of Haiti into a Revolution that would later make Haiti the first Black Republic in the western world. This piece represents the idea of “Standing on Strong Shoulders” within the concept of knowing your history. Black boys don’t have many heroes aside from the few on TV, for example, Miles Morales, Black Panther and Cyborg from the Justice League, all of which are fictional characters. Regardless of gender, real heroism can be found within our history and those who came before us. In those stories we find motivation, strength, and unity. Whitewashed textbooks have caused our Black youth to lack knowledge on where they come from. It is up to us to narrate our stories whether it’s to help understand our identities, or just for a simple playtime. In so doing, we, too, become Strong Shoulders.

Legacy By Paul Beniaminov Year Created: December 2020 to January 2021 Medium: Pencil and graphite Dimensions: 19” x 25” As per the theme “Standing on Strong Shoulders” I wanted to showcase how Black youth do not just stand on the legacy of ancestors, but they also must keep the legacy going, and let history stand on their shoulders - not as a way to be brought down, but rather a way to present their culture and find their own voice. Advocacy and resistance against discrimination is something historical, and worth upholding as a Black youth. This is seen in the portrait I made with the Black youth standing amongst symbols of Black power and culture. This includes a Djembe drum, a raised fist, a microphone, and many other items or symbols. Mixing the portrait with a collage, I am able to showcase both the individuality of Black youth, as well as a tied-in cultural aspect, acknowledging the importance of being empowered, and taking ownership of history.

It talks, so you can have a conversation with it, ask it questions and have it as a friend. It can also sleep with you and it tells jokes. I am inspired by Lonnie G Johnson because he created something for kids to have fun. I am standing on his shoulders because when I grow up, I want to be a Black scientist and engineer.
