“This collection of photographs pays homage to the very idea of being an artist. Who’s cooler than an artist?! Passionate, creative and dedicated, they are the people I admire most. If eyes are the windows to the soul, then artists are the windows to our cultural soul. It’s through their eyes that we can look deeply within in ourselves. When I’m shooting, I am looking to get to know my subjects, to learn who they are and where they came from. I am curious to know where they are heading as artists. Since the studio is where it happens, it’s a privilege to be invited in and to get a glimpse at what’s to come. I am constantly seeking out the things around the space that influence the artist—their inspiration references, memorabilia, books, and music. I’m looking for connections, things we have in common, things I can take away with me to use. When you spend time around people who are so highly focused on their work, you can’t help but be influenced. It sharpens your focus to reset your aim. It’s a purifying process. There’s no difference between visiting an artist or some highly devout monk. Being in the presence of such committed people humbles you and demands of you the effort to become better, to be more honest in your work.” Michael Mundy is the author of the blog, ‘An Afternoon With...’ where he captures the lives and homes of New York’s artists and creatives. The project has garnered him innumerable faithful followers. Michael’s photographs have been published in Architectural Digest, Vogue, W Magazine, Town & County, Travel and Leisure, House & Garden and Wallpaper.

Born and raised in New York City, Michael Mundy began his photographic journey in his late teens shooting rock bands in the East Village. His ongoing passion for photography combined with an extraordinary eye has led Michael to work with many of the industries most prestigious clientele. Depth and sensitivity characterize Michael’s unmistakable style. Over the course of his career, Michael has photographed splendid architectural and interior spaces, noted personalities, and has enjoyed bringing his vision to the world of fashion, as well. Michael continues to develop and grow through his personal work. Over the past several years he has channeled his personal time towards a series entitled, ‘An Afternoon With…’ capturing the lives of some of New York’s unique characters in the intimacy of their personal spaces. Michael is fascinated with the interconnected nature of the human condition. “Every picture is a portrait—be it a room, an object, or a view.”
