Your local furniture store has evolved! The business evolved from selling antique pine furniture from a small shop at Wetheriggs Pottery. Today it has become what is probably the biggest retailer of oak furniture in the county with 2 shops and over 3000 items of furniture in stock. Many items are available to be taken away the same day or you can have them delivered free of charge within Cumbria.

But it’s not just a massive selection of oak furniture that they offer. They also have a huge range of traditional and modern rugs. Unlike many stores they have extra large rugs on display to takeaway the same day or have delivered. With smaller rugs starting at £35 and large rugs 6’7 x 9’10 starting at only £129 they offer amazing value for money.

Welcome to the October edition of your Cumbrian Local Welcome to the October edition of Cumbrian Local. It is a special month as it marks the end of the fifth year for the magazine and the 72nd publication. We welcome around 20 villages for the first time and a number of areas in and around Carlisle including Dalston. For those new readers taking the time out to have a read, you may have seen me or members of my family or Dave and Martin posting your first Cumbrian Local. Some of you may be having a quick flick through and notice a number of businesses from Penrith, the Eden Valley and some businesses that are based in both Carlisle and Eden. Many of us are used to travelling to school, to work, to complete everyday tasks and we do live in one of the largest counties in the country. Forgive me for bringing this up again established readers, but it does have 300 mountains, different weather systems where 4 feet of snow and -5 degrees 2 miles down the road could mean up the road it’s +10 degrees above this winter. We are in a county almost as big as the south of Cyprus. There, I said it and with a population of around 500,000 as a county, it can’t always be run as a country but it can be so very independent. Would you want to live anywhere else? Penrith and Carlisle, between them a short trip on the train, a 25-30 minute trip maybe in the car; both once a part of Scotland with so much history shared. The Eden Valley with a population of around 53,000 and the border city inner and outer population of around 107,000. I love local, I live local and I like to share the concept of local; a day in Carlisle or a day in Penrith, a trip through the valley and a stop off in Appleby. Two railway lines; what a bonus. From villages into the city. Down south you’d be converted commuters, complaining about the odd country odour and nosey animals. I can’t Continued on page 6

image that here, if we can keep generations in villages, the pubs and village shops alive and schools well. It’s a debate for another day, but it’s one that won’t go away. All so close, so convenient, the links even after cuts in transport, we have between towns villages and the city. Then the backbone that is the River Eden, through that wonderful valley, through that ancient city. Do we always appreciate what’s just up the M6 or just down it or what is along the A66 or on that back road, the A6 that communities were built on once? What we have, for those new to Cumbrian Local, is a simple magazine, put together by local people. You could be one of those people or a community group. It’s not a newspaper. We have volunteer writers, passionate about their work, hobbies and activities. We like local stories and to grow a few more pages and balance with the mix of advertising supporting it, which is the key reason why you’re reading it now, we need people on board and we have to keep moving forward. I have a duty to the businesses supporting the Cumbrian Local to get their name through new doors. For you reading at home or at work, maybe online or even keeping in touch overseas, the Cumbrian Local isn’t after world, national or county domination. It’s after people. It’s a form of communication to people who don’t get a local paper and who aren’t on social media or snapchat or texting. Well it is for everybody, because we do text and have social media, but we are trying to reach as many people of all ages as we can. We don’t charge charities for the odd mention or box promoting an event, but we only have so much space that we share with voluntary groups and charities. We do have access to a number of media outlets to promote events. Pages 12 to 13 is one of these outlets. Voluntary groups, the coach at the football and the fundraising event at the village hall shouldn’t need to spend funds on marketing that event or what they do or need

help with as they are doing enough already. The Cumbrian Local is free to you, but it’s not designed, printed and delivered to your door without a cost. It is a small independent business like many in Cumbria. We are fortunate that as a family business, we have been recognised and supported by many businesses from the local butcher, the one man or woman in a van, painter and decorator, the local farmer, or cheese maker to the plc’s, sometimes not recognised as they are quite local. This is your magazine, once the Eden Local printing 6,000 magazines across Penrith delivered by Royal Mail, now with 21 teams, including some voluntary groups posting 19,000 magazines through doors which we hope will keep growing. The more people we have to help, the more magazines we will print. Can you help? Writing an article, or delivering the publication? There are more details about this on page 26 and 31. Almost at the end of my opening. Yes it’s fast approaching the Halloween festivities, but some are already passed this month and next and thinking Christmas, as early as September, then 4 months of getting ready for one day, well as a monthly publication, we have many bookings already through to February 2017. Forward planning maybe, but let’s get Halloween and Bonfire Night behind us before the Christmas lights go up! More of a welcome opening, but also a statement preparing for the way ahead from now on and the busy way we’ll navigate through the ever changing local media landscape. My thanks to so many involved in this month’s publication. I’ll be back with the team in November, out around the 12th and we’ll be talking Christmas and the New Year. All Hallows Eve by Lee Quinn

It you have heard the expression, “it’s all very American”, you may want to think again. The word Halloween or Hallowe’en dates back to about 1745 and is said to be of Christian origin. The word “Halloween” means “hallowed evening” or “holy evening” and it comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows’ Eve (the evening before All Hallows’ Day). From Scottish dialect, the word “eve” is even, and this is contracted to e’en or een. So All Hallows Eve eventually evolved into Halloween, although the phrase “All Hallows’” is found in Old English. I’ve got to go back to when I was a child. Media didn’t run the world then and in junior school, we carved out swedes; as my mate Neil at Carleton Farm refers to them as turnips, to make lanterns. Everything on television was black and white, which worked well for full moons, witches, bats, spiders and ghosts, but not for things coloured orange. Back in the early to mid-seventies, I didn’t really know much about a pumpkin. They weren’t for sale in abundance, but I knew Cinderella had one to get about town. Carving out a turnip meant a sharp knife and a few plasters. We didn’t have ‘Trick or Treat’, well not until everyone saw the film ET. Do you remember the little alien dressed as a ghost trick or treating?

the first sequels, because by Halloween II, in 1982, Halloween III, in 1985, I’ll stop there; when the ninth Halloween film came out, by then FW Woolworths had sold a stack of Halloween costumes, trick or trick sweets and decorations, they were closed and pumpkins had pushed the turnip out and were in abundance. And of course pumpkins, like other squash, are native to North America. I don’t think they have anything to do with orange squash! North American indigenous people, that’s Native Americans, lived in what is now the United States for thousands of years before European colonists began to arrive, mostly from England, after 1600. It was in 1776 that Congress declared that there was a new, independent nation, the United States of America. Did they dance around fires chanting and carving out pumpkins? In the 19th century there was mass Irish and Scottish immigration increasing Halloween holiday celebrations in the United States, although I don’t reckon the Irish and the Scottish took any Turnips with them!

I was too young to see the movie Halloween when it was released, starring Donald Pleasance and a young actress making her debut, Jamie Lee Curtis. The plot is set in the fictional Midwestern town of Haddonfield, Illinois. On Halloween night in 1963, a six-year-old Michael Myers dressed in a clown costume murders his older sister. Is that why so many people get freaked out by clowns?! But was it one of CumbrianLocal

In Good Company By Tony Butterworth

As a solicitor taking on the Banks on behalf of farmers up and down the County I have been surprised and amazed at just how much extra specialist help is available to the farming community in Cumbria.

I thought it would be interesting to share with Cumbrian Local readers my experiences of just one week on the frontline of the battle to help farmers and their extended families through some of the most difficult times in decades. First of all I came across the Cumbrian Farmer Network, operating for over 10 years from Newton Rigg College and led by the newly appointed and well known former auctioneer Adam Day.

Independent with over 500 members in Cumbria, the organisation is dedicated to advising and helping farmers by offering training courses, grants and discount buying of farming services and products. Run by farmers for the benefit of farmers. At a membership cost of just £60.00 per year, it represents fantastic value for money – a real “no brainer” if you are a farmer. Next up came Georgina Lamb of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute (R.A.B.I). A charity dedicated solely to helping farmers in desperate need of financial support. A farmer’s daughter herself, Georgina runs a team of 3 welfare support officers throughout the county. With Her Majesty the Queen as patron of R.A.B.I who could ask for more. Finally who would have thought that we have our own Agricultural Chaplain for Cumbria – well we do – in the larger than life form of the Reverend Chris Blackshaw.

Tony Butterworth - Solicitor

Chris’s passion and desire to help farmers in their most desperate times just pours out of him. He can give confidential support through illness, bereavement, suicide, divorce, personal and financial issues plus a whole lot more. A good listener he is worth a call. In summary farmers face testing times but should realise help is at hand from all of the above. My Visit to Eden Age UK Day Care. Last month I had the hugely rewarding chance to visit the Age UK day centre on Lowther Street in Penrith. What I found was not merely a collection of older people coming together for companionship and activity but in fact a family. As you may have read in the previous issue of your Cumbrian Local the day-care centre is a small charitybased opportunity for senior citizens to get out of the house; find friendship, camaraderie and activity; and banish thoughts of lonely isolation at home. I say ‘charity-based’ because, although supported by Age UK, the funding required means there is a cost to those who visit the centre. That cost often means visitors have to limit the number of days they can attend (the centre is open three days a week) and of course it also means many cannot afford to go at all. That then is the main need of the centre…. Funding. The people who go, in no uncertain terms, love it. I got the sense that the chance to socialise, so often taken for granted by younger people takes on the importance of running water or a heated home. I can’t stress enough how vital it was to those I met to be able to get out of the house and spend time with other people. I often value a spot of solitude and I am quite happy with my own company but what we are talking about for a lot of older people is an almost enforced isolation, for extended periods with little facility to get out and about. This day-centre is thus a God-send… and that is their term, not mine, that says it all about what it means to those who can go. We have an aging population in our area and limited resources to address this, therefore charity endeavours like the centre can have a huge role to play in providing services to our senior generations. To my mind this is exactly the type of cause that Penrith Town Council should be supporting and championing. Groups like this can now apply for grants from the Council, as can any community group or charity. More than this however, awareness of the existence of such a wonderful service must be raised for it is a case of numbers, if more people go, more can be done and for more people. Penrith Town Council can be found online at www. penrithtowncouncil.co.uk Eden Day Care can be contacted through the Carlisle office on 01228 536673 By Scott Jackson CumbrianLocal

Wainwright tops the poll of Cumbria’s Finest 50 icons! Alfred Wainwright has been voted No 1 in a poll of Cumbria’s Finest 50 icons. The poll, organized by Cumbria magazine received nearly 500 suggestions for icons of Cumbria from Kendal Mint Cake to red squirrels and everything in between! But out of thousands of votes, it was Alfred Wainwright, the author of the Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland fells that easily topped the poll. And there was some stiff competition as the top 10 were as follows: 10 Red Squirrels 9 Joss Naylor, the fellrunner 8 Scafell Pike 7 Langdale 6 Cumberland Sausage 5 William Wordsworth 4 Beatrix Potter 3 Blencathra 2 Herdwick Sheep 1 Alfred Wainwright Alfred Wainwright, the shy lad from Blackburn who was inspired to move to the Lake District after his first visit in 1930 when he was captivated by the views of the mountains after climbing Orrest Head above Windermere. He became Borough Treasurer of Kendal and spent all his spare time over 13 years devising and writing the seven Pictorial Guides to the fells; still the guidebook of choice amongst serious and not so serious fellwalkers. His biographer, Hunter Davies and Patron of The Wainwright Society, commented: ‘Wainwright: typical, takes an outsider to create a little work of art which was always there but took him to really let us see it.’ He was a man that shunned publicity and described himself as ‘a backroom boy who liked to get on with his work’. He wrote over 50 books but it is the Pictorial Guides; his love letter to the Lakeland fells for which he will always be remembered. He was able to convey that love of the fells in a few simple words: ‘The fleeting hour of life of those that love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal. Always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest; always there will be the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking, and those who seek and find while there is yet time will be blest both in mind and body.’ The Western Fells Some Personal Notes in Conclusion If you would like to know more about The Wainwright Society, log on to the website at www.wainwright.org. uk or email secretary@wainwright.org.uk If you would like to know more about the Society, log on to the website at www.wainwright.org.uk or email publicity@wainwright.org.uk Derek Cockell Press & Publicity Officer, The Wainwright Society.

2000 were printed how many are left? A unique and ‘one off’ opportunity is the simple way of describing this snap shot in history. There may be the odd unit of the Penrith and Eden Valley Monopoly around with one of the original board sponsors, but after this Christmas, this ‘one off’ traditional game may just be a collectable and novelty item only owned by 2000 people that will be one day just a small piece of history and worth a lot more than its monetary value. Gowbarrow Fell Gowbarrow Fell is one of the best known of Lakeland’s smaller fells, mainly because of Aira Force on the beck forming its western boundry.

Helm Crag & Gowbarrow Fell Peaks & Pathways by Nick Wells Helm Crag Helm Crag stands overlooking Grasmere village in Lakelands central fells, anyone driving from Keswick to Ambleside will have seen the prominant features of rock on its summit. I parked up on Easedale lane at the same place I parked for Easedale Tarn, then walked along the tarmac track sign posted to Helm Crag. I followed the path that zig zags through the old quarry, there are a few cairns to help navigation along the way. This part of the walk is very steep, but soon the path gets easier and eventually reaches the shoulder of Helm Crag. Looking to the west I could see Easedale Tarn with Harrison Stickle of the Langdales just comming into view. The path switches back on itself then continues until it reaches the summit of Helm Crag, here the views are fantastic from Grasmere to the Helvellyn range. The summit has two famous rock outcrops, the first you will reach is ‘The Lion and Lamb‘, this feature can only be identified as so from the lake side of Grasmere, it has one large rock towering over another close by. The more northern rock and highest point of the mountain at 1,328 ft, is known as ‘The Howitzer’ or ‘The Old Woman Playing The Organ’, a tricky scramble, best avoided when wet. This is probably the only summit Wainright didn‘t conquer and me neither, as Oscar would have tried to follow me which was too risky. From Helm Crag I followed the path down towards Easedale Tarn, reaching Easedale Beck just below Sour Milk Ghyll, then the path eventually returned me to Easedale lane. This is a walk of about three and a half miles, took me approximately 2 hours and from a walkers point of view perhaps too short, however a perfect evening walk. I would grade it as easy to moderate. The fell springs from a mass of high ground in the north and takes the shape of a broad wedge, tapering as it falls to Ullswater Lake. The lower slopes are wooded, but low crags and bracken make it difficult to access, except where they are traversed by the many green paths which makes it so popular. About Two miles from Glenridding on the A592 from Penrith, there is a National Park car park on the right, with a sign ‘ Aira Force ‘ on the roadside. Park in here and take the well trodden path passing the money tree and over the bridge, then follow the beck for about half a mile till you reach Aira Force. ( this is the main waterfall of about 50ft aprox ) From here you can either take the path and complete a full circuit back to the car park, or carry on toward Gowbarrow Fell. Heading on up you will pass High Force ( a smaller waterfall ), follow Aira Beck for about half a mile, then turn right towards the summit of Gowbarrow Fell at 1,579 feet. The views from here are spectacular, with Lake Ullswater right in front of you, then from left to right you have Hallen Fell, Beda Fell and Place Fell towering above the the far shores of the Lake. Ther are two paths down from here, one is a short cut back to Aira Force over Green Hill, or the longer path which takes you past the remains of an old shooting box, then down to Yew Crag and through a wooded path back to the car park. This walk is about two and a half to three miles long, depending on which route you take from Gowbarrow’s summit, and I would grade it as easy.

Thackawatch October 2015 - By John France

Lapwings © John France

Well, winter is on its way! Pink-footed Geese probably from Iceland, were seen flying south over Thacka late in September. This species which over-winters in the UK, can be seen regularly during the cold months at various locations on the Solway, including Campfield Marsh and also in the Eden Valley. It’s always good to see the Lapwings over Thacka Beck Nature Reserve. At the time of writing there are over 300 birds regularly feeding in fields adjoining the reserve. Depending on weather conditions and frozen ground, a number of Lapwings are often present for most of the winter around Penrith and the Eden Valley, moving to the coast and easier food sources if the elements turn bad. Lapwings favour grassland, moors and planted arable farm land for breeding purposes, with around 130,000 pairs breeding in the UK. During the winter numbers can increase upto about 620,000, with birds flying in from mainland Europe. Watch out for large finch flocks at Thacka Beck during November - species include Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, and if you are really lucky you may find a Brambling in the Hawthorn hedge

Penrith AFC By Karl Collinson

Penrith AFC have had a sobering September having only won once in the league. That came with a very impressive 3.1 home victory against Jarrow Roofing with Nathan Waterston being in superb form. © John France

We’ve been unlucky not to pick up a few more points having lost by the odd goal at Marske gaining a point on our travels against a very impressive Guisborough Town side who defeated us 3.1 at Frenchfield Park the week before. The highlight of the month was our away league cup tie at Washington. Martyn Coleman was on top form and scored a brace as we came away with a 2.0 victory. It was all more impressive as that was the home sides first defeat of the season in all competitions.

Carleton Banks Update

We face a busy October with games against Durham City, Newton Aycliffe, Newcastle Benfield, Whitley Bay, Washington and Bedlington Terriers in the league and our Cumberland Cup tie at home against AFC Carlisle. Plus we’ve got our league cup tie against Sunderland RCA. We hope to see some new faces down to Frenchfield Park as we’re proud to be officially opening our new extension this month.

By Liam Jackson Carleton Banks hosted Langwathby at Frenchfields in the first fixture of September, which was also the last midweek fixture of the calendar year. A strong line-up helped the Soccer Moos to a comfortable 3-0 victory over a resilient Langwathby side, who went down to 10 men after a late dismissal. Eddie Raine, Mark Nixon and Ryan Smith were all on the scoresheet for the Pinks.

The club are running a supporters coach to West Allotment Celtic on Saturday 28th November. Departing at 11am, cost £10. If interested contact Karl Collinson pif@hotmail.co.uk

tunately for the Pinks it was them that Endmoor received their first point against. A 1-1 draw on a day where the away team played very well as league positions meant nothing, where either team could have taken all the spoils. Paul Parker put the pinks ahead late in the second half only for the Soccer Moos to fail to clear and be pegged back seconds before the half time whistle went. The Soccer Moos travelled Ambleside in their third fixture of September and after an impressive first half playing some fantastic quick paced passing football the Pinks went into the break leading 1-0 after a spectacular James Mandle strike from outside the box. The inspired introduction of Stew Sewell for Ambleside saw the game turned on its head with the Ambleside striker scoring two excellent goals to give the home side the win.

Order your Table & Chair set now ready for Christmas.

Carleton were back at home the following week with Shap the visitors. After a good run Jake Briggs was brought down in the box resulting in a penalty, the young forward calmly dusted himself off and dispatched the spot kick into the bottom left of the goal. Shap levelled with a goal from Captain Andrew Dawson before Jake Briggs once again dragged his side into the lead with a left footed effort to the top right corner. Carleton could not hold onto the 3 points as Nigel Jackson got another equaliser for the away side who could have easily walked away with win as they put the ball in the back of the net which was unfairly ruled offside. The last fixture of September for Carleton Banks was an away trip to Keswick, another make shift look to the side with Luke Wilson returning and debutant Matt McNaughton partnering Mark Nixon at the back. It was a close game with both sides creating chances, but it was quick bit of thinking from Pinks Captain Josh Briggs picking up on a quick corner and crossing for the goal machine that is Mark Nixon to head past a helpless goalkeeper. Keswick had an opportunity near the end to equaliser but their full-back could only poke his shot wide of the goal.

Penrith Royal will be looking to get back to winning ways after some disappointing results over the last month. We played out a very hard fought home game with Ibis reserves & really deserved to take all three points, as the lads put in a great second half shift & created so many chances but failed to put them away. On from that game we lost our last three matches but yet again we worked really hard & created many chances in the game to nick a point or even take all three. Manager Alan Parkin & Captain Mark Jackson put the lads through a very hard training session at Newton Rigg on recently so hopefully with the amount

UniSun Atheltic UniSun won their first game this season against an in-form Ibis team who had started life in the top flight a lot better out of the 2 promoted sides. UniSun controlled a lot of the ball in the first half but Ibis looked dangerous on the break with a lot of pace up front and on the wings. The Scholars took the lead when William Nichols Rose, playing his first game of the season, drifted a free kick towards the back post and the Ibis keeper could only manage to turn the ball into his own net as he tried to punch clear. Ibis levelled shortly after when the number 11 finally found some CumbrianLocal

space in between the UniSun lines and he neatly lifted the ball over the last defender before tucking the ball into the bottom corner when one-on-one with the keeper. UniSun regained the lead just before the break with the goal of the game, starting with the ball at keeper Stewart Dawson’s feet they passed from the back before finding Kevin Campbell in space on the right. The winger beat his man before squaring the ball across to Tom Prince who finished calmly to notch his second goal in as many games. The second half was fought out in midfield with few chances at either end before Luke Dryden

doubled UniSun’s advantage with a close-range, far post header from another Nichols Rose free kick. Ibis pushed players forward as they looked to get back into the game but were limited to long range efforts. Both teams turn their attention back to the league now as UniSun look to use the result to kick-start their season and Ibis look to continue their fine start.
