I asked them why the expansion into carpets and mattresses, their answer was one which was simple. Robert tells me that their Oak furniture has gone from 2 ranges to 15 and their ability to fulfil customer orders is at an all time high with most customers being able to take the item away the same day or have it delivered within a week. This left them with the possibility of expanding into mattresses and carpets and Rugs. After a 6 month trial we are now ready to once again expand and lauch our new products. With
special offers on all our new items plus the spring sale starts on Saturday, there has never been a better time to visit.

Welcome to your Cumbrian Local I believe spring has finally arrived! Lambing is a sign that this is the case, and whilst this means long hours and long days for the farming community, the scenes of new life out in the fields and on the fells is one that makes many feel refreshed and ready for the months ahead. As seasonal and rewarding it may make us feel, please spare a thought for those around us creating that perfect addition to our landscape of life. The daylight hours of the longer evenings and seeing people busying themselves in their gardens also makes us feel better. Whilst I am sure there will be more rain, a bit of sunshine does make us feel more positive. We’ve had an interesting March. I was pleased to be invited to the meeting of local hoteliers and guest house owners within days of the meeting appearing on the Eden District Council website, under the heading ‘Special meeting’ about the phase 2 ideas for the New Squares. There have been many statements issued and many more to come, but the basic fact is, for the local council to even have on any agenda any matter, which potentially could affect people, businesses and lead to decisions which should involve a fair period of consultation with those affected, it shouldn’t just be put on an agenda without notice, regardless of whether it was a matter to be discussed at council in principle. The key principle of the matter is before these principles arrive on agendas, they should be press released so that people can assist the council with its decision making. Community communication has to be a priority, hence why I like to post through doors and look forward to the Eden FM transmitter being switched on. I would like to congratulate the group for rallying together at such short notice. Special thanks to Justin at the
George Hotel for hosting the meeting. Also special thanks to Councillor Linch for pointing out the clear facts on the action needed before the matter went to planning and finally Dan & David Harding from Foundry 34 and Vanda from Ashberry Guest House for playing a big part in rallying the group and presenting the case to local media. I hope my task of co-ordinating the local media, with local radio, TV and press helped with what was a quick turnaround in getting the word out to people who needed to know, especially when it impacts on so many lives. Across Eden with the neighbourhood planning initiatives, many opportunities are being seized by the community to take charge and have some controls. With the start of a community governance review now finally agreed by Eden District Council, we may be one small step towards Penrith having its independence. One would hope that recent events might strengthen the need for a town council to be involved in planning issues, representing the needs of the people and the impact on local businesses. I suppose I should come off the soap box now. As you receive your April Cumbrian Local in time for your Easter break, I would like to wish you all a happy Easter. Who knows what I’ll be writing about next month. If you have some points you would like to discuss, please give me a call or drop me a line. My contact details are below. Thank you again for taking the time to read your local, free, community publication, with the highest distribution across the Eden Valley, dependent on doors not sales..... and as for the readership, you are one in many thousands across the Eden Valley, North Lakes and North Pennines, who is very much appreciated. For many, Easter is about chocolate, Easter bunnies, Yellow chicks and Easter Eggs, but let’s not forget the importance of why we celebrate it. The day before Lent is Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day and Lent starts the next day on Ash Wednesday, which this year was 5th March. Lent lasts for six and a half weeks (40 days). The last week of Lent begins with Palm Sunday, which celebrates the day Jesus entered Jerusalem and the people lay down palms at his feet. The last day of Lent is Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, which we know as Easter Day. In the Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), with the beginning of the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

The landscape of local news and media is about to change forever in the summer of 2014 By Lee Quinn
Have you ever heard or witnessed a new a radio station being launched? The Eden FM Community Radio launch will be on a radio near you, in your kitchen, in your car, at your place of work. Of course it will be your choice; it’s your voice in the community. Eden FM will be switching on its FM transmitter and it will be on your radio dial as it takes to the air waves with its full time community radio licence. Are you ready to tune in? It is a non-commercial station, a not for profit limited company and 80% staffed by local volunteers. Its three studio base and offices based in Penrith, its roving mobile unit in a different part of Eden every week and with plans for 3 additional micro studios, we could be in your town or city. There is only one local radio station that produces its own radio magazine. There is only one local radio station that is posted through the doors of homes and businesses across the Penrith and the Eden Valley; that is your radio station. We are home to an asset of the community, serving as the voice of the community.

Official Opening of the Eden
Greg Forbes - Smoked
It was in last month’s Cumbrian Local that we introduced you to the Eden Stone Emporium. One of a number of new businesses to open their doors in Penrith, which not only brings a uniqueness in its concept, but an education and knowledge of its products.
Chef John Crouch
Chocolatier - John Hendy
Its doors opened only last month and as a taster, we served up information about the origin and the types of stone available to view in this well presented gallery of modern, classical, traditional and innovative stone that is available for use in multiple applications, inside or outside your home or place of business. Mounted on the walls in specially designed displays, there are 20 types of marble, 12 types of slate, 12 types of travertine, 5 types of limestone and 41 types of porcelain. With all the samples now on display, as with any high profile product, John Williams, the proprietor will continue to source new types of stone from around the world. Floors change, walls change, budgets go up and down, but the range available takes into consideration everyone’s budget

without compromising quality. The official opening day is 24th April with a special invitation to tradesman and anybody with interest in stone, but also art. Whilst the Eden Stone Emporium is a gallery of stone, the facilities are also used to exhibit unique local works of art and sculptures. In its first month, the gallery welcomed an exhibition of Peacort by Steven Peacock and some of his work is still available to purchase. Commencing this month and seen here are the images of the work of Bob Campbell, AKA ‘Stig’, a self taught English sculptor. He is best known for his furniture design and his use of redundant mechanical and industrial parts. His home and workshop are located in South Yorkshire and as a new feature to the Emporium, some of these amazing sculptures are here to been seen and purchased. The opening day is full of surprises, some of these supplied by Oliver’s Tasty Bites for breakfast and lunch bites with same day vouchers for tradesmen. The finale of the day commences at 6pm by invitation only.

To complement the stone sourced from around the world, the evening will unfold with tastes from around the world and more closer to home. Renowned Chef John Crouch, will be coming up with a selection of worldly dishes and he is joined by Greg Forbes ‘Smoked’ with a variety of his specialist smoked foods. A new business to Penrith, but an established Chef Chocolatier, John Hendy will be testing taste buds with combinations of chocolate from the globe. There is a distinct possibility all the food luxuries will be served on the stone of their origin. The entertainment is also of a lively culture, full of history and eastern promise.

From Boys to Toys
Like this brief article, it can be filled with imagination. I met Len the owner of A6 Toys, which is a combination of rooms creating an Aladdin’s cave of toys, a few maybe just for the boys, but Barbie does have a place. And as Len described his passion of being a toy collector and living his dream of setting up his toy shop 14 years ago at Plumpton, which is with the Post office at Plumpton, he sees generations of people visiting not just from the local area or Cumbria, but from the counties beyond. For one lad, it’s his once a year birthday treat and for another much older lad who is a serious collector from Northumberland, his purchases are not for play and stored better than a good bottle of wine.
Pictures can paint a thousand words. They can also make you lick your lips. In Jane’s kitchen, it is homemade all the way. Made fresh on the day are homemade soup, daily specials, homemade puddings, with vegetarian options and have a look at this Orangey Gluten Free option for tea.
Open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 4pm (closed Tuesday) and open Sundays 9.30 – 3pm for a super Sunday Roast.
Len’s shop has quite a unique, rural edge in his key ranges of toys like Britains, Siku and Bruder. He can order in pretty much any toy you need, but when it comes to tractors, vehicles and farm sets, it’s a must visit for the children, the parents and the grandparents. Something you don’t always see on the internet when shopping online is the excitement and that wow as you walk into a real shop. A6 Toys,The A6 Shop, Plumpton, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 9NS

For theLove of
Chocolate
The film Chocolat, possibly took chocolate to a different level. Vianne Rocher played by Juliette Binoche is an expert chocolatier, who drifts across Europe with her daughter Anouk played by Victoire Thivisol. In the winter of 1959, they travel to a quiet French town, opening their chocolate shop at the start of the forty days of Lent, much to the displeasure of Count Reynaud the Mayor. It’s a film of romance and adventure, a new face, a new business opening in a small town. One of the first to fall under the spell of Vianne and her chocolate is Armande played by Dame Judi Dench, her elderly, eccentric landlady. A band of river gypsies arrive on the outskirts of the village and whilst most of the town objects to their presence, Vianne embraces them, developing a mutual attraction to the gypsy Roux played by Johnny Depp. Born in Darlington, John Hendy lived and went to school in Richmond, North Yorkshire. He joined the British Army for a few years, then came out and went to work in Scotland, France, Greece, and Spain as a chef learning his trade. John eventually arrived in Penrith working at the George Hotel and Foundry 34 where his passion finally came to the forefront of his career, the love of working with chocolate. John decided to open his very own chocolate shop, For the Love Of Chocolate, in the Devonshire Arcade inspired by many family holidays around Europe and the chocolate shops he had visited.

I obviously visited the shop to capture the taste of the article I had produced! My first thoughts were that Chocolat had come to Penrith. John is no Juliette, but as a chocolatier he can be traditional, creative, passionate and innovative with the range he presents on slate dishes - a mouth-watering counter full of chocolate. I asked him about his key ingredient. ‘It’s an important thing for me to know were my cocoa comes from as every cocoa pod bean and plantation has its own flavours, a little bit like a fine wine, things like the weather and the harvest, timing and the picking of the pods and many other factors have to be considered.’ He went on to say, ‘It’s vitally important to the farmers and the support we give them so that we get the best quality product and they get a fair price to help sustain and grow their livelihood and villages. With the different cocoa, I can make my own blends and flavours of chocolate, creating unique tastes, colours and textures presenting a product you simply cannot buy anywhere else.’

BEAUTY EVENT
Sunday 27th April at 3pm A craftsman, John claims he can make anything out of chocolate. He makes moulds on the premises, mixing all his ingredients into his chocolate at the shop. It’s no secret, when you drop into the shop, chances are he’ll be mixing, casting or decorating. With regards to the range and taste, in John’s words, ‘It’s pretty unlimited as to what you can do with chocolate, every chocolate as its own balance of flavours that works with different things.’ I was at this point going to write a list of the varieties, describe sweet and savoury tastes, which make your tastes work overtime, like Vianne Rocher, John can conjure up your favourite taste, maybe its still to be discovered……

The Felltarn Friends Lake District Adventures
and bad. There is a page dedicated to Penrith Castle and it also mentions other local venues such as Crafty Monkeys and Pirates of Penrith. This book is well worth every penny and will be a great investment for Easter and Summer holidays, as it will provide hours of entertainment for children of primary school age.
When we think of children’s literature connected to Cumbria, it’s likely the classic Arthur Ransome and Beatrix Potter stories come to mind. However there are some new guys in town that already seem to be causing some excitement locally; meet the Felltarn Friends and the Lakeland OddSoks! The Felltarn Friends – Lake District Adventures is a fantastic new activity book, with over 90 beautifully illustrated pages packed full of fun and facts on the Lake District. Just as Beatrix Potter was inspired by the stunning landscape to write her well-known stories, the creators of the Felltarn Friends, Clare Mansfield and Amy Onyango, have also used the natural environment and wildlife as the focus for their activity book. They have created eight characters such as Robyn Squirrel and Bridget Bat, who have their own particular personalities and invite us to actively go out and discover and explore the local area. Harry Fox, for example, is a cheeky and cheery little chap who loves helping in the kitchen. His favourite food is Cumberland Sausage and Sticky Toffee Pudding and he provides us with a perfect recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding, which my eight-year-old daughter was keen to test out with delicious results! My seven-year-old son was hooked on the page devoted to learning about the birds found at Lowther’s Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre. The book has something for everyone, whether it be mazes, word searches, sudoku, jokes, environmental and historical facts, there is even a page about Wordsworth! One of the things I enjoyed about this book is the interaction it encourages between adults and children and it also gives suggestions for great family days out in good weather CumbrianLocal
If you do visit some of the places recommended by the Felltarn Friends, you may discover a shy set of magical creatures called the OddSoks who live deep in the woods in the Lake District, instantly recognizable by the fact that they all wear…yes you guessed it, odd socks! The adventures of these previously undiscovered and secret creatures have been vividly brought to life by author Steve Critchley who introduces us to the Elms (a bit like elves but they live under the roots of trees), Blind Crag who is as old as the mountains and his companion Pike, the Lowbs who live in the barns and the Paddlers who cunningly disguise themselves as boulders in the rivers and streams. Since we launched this series of children’s adventure stories here at Wordsworth Bookshop last year, they have become a firm favourite of many local children and requested by school teachers as examples of well-written, timeless adventure stories that children can relate to because they recognise the real locations mentioned. The fact that the stories are so stunningly illustrated in pastels by Rob Jones, with such memorable characters, makes them very special books which all children should read. Good news for fans of the OddSoks as I have been reliably informed that there is another story in the pipeline featuring a new creature called Lily. I, for one, can’t wait! Copies of Felltarn Friends – Lake District Adventures by Claire Jane Mansfield and Amy Onyango £8.99, and signed copies of The Lakeland OddSoks series of books £6.99 are on sale at Wordsworth Bookshop, Penrith By Andrea Dennison Wordsworth Bookshop and Coffee House 8 St Andrew’s Churchyard Penrith CA11 7YE

The Road to a Town Council for Penrith, by the petitioner of a Town Council for Penrith Given the choice, actually being asked for an opinion, which would you choose and who would you trust in this challenge for the people of Penrith? Local democracy should be underpinned by responsibility and trust. Is this the case? How much power and control does the government at the top of the tree have when it comes to the roots of society and how we live in our town? Media has a big part to play in spreading the news. How much good news do you see on the front of your local paper or your national paper? We watch the news on the television. Are the headlines good or are they bad? A jovial bit of good news at the end before the weather maybe? Believe it or not, in this area there are a lot of good things happening, whether you see it or hear it, many of us depend on the media to dampen or brighten up our day. A lot of people play at politics. They wave their coloured flag, but they are only people. Like any tribe they need a leader and in every tribe there is always a battle for leadership. In my experience, more damage is done within these groups to each other and it’s unfortunate that these energies aren’t channelled in the interest of the local people. This can be seen at the top end of the country’s democratic process and now it’s being witnessed at the bottom end of the country’s democratic process in Penrith. There have been many local stories in Eden surrounding the growing concern that democracy is dead in Eden. When the headlines print comments from the leader of the District Council and the Conservative party that suggests the BNP party could take over the town by securing seats, of course it will make the front page. Do you believe it? Is there any proof to support the statement? Was it true? With no proof, how can it be news or even printed? Or was an indication that not just the Conservative Party is struggling with the idea of a town council, but their recent recruitment evening for potential candidates probably wasn’t as successful as they hoped? The Localism Act 2011 is a Conservative Government initiative, but the Penrith Town Group set up in July 2013 to obtain 1250 signatures, as confirmed by Eden District Council Legal Services 1600 signatures were received, has never been supported by the local Conservative Group. The signatures that triggered the start of the Community Governance review, were supported by a local team of independent people and councillors and the Liberal Democrats. No one else. With no involvement in the process to date, already the CumbrianLocal

Conservative party has attempted to turn the idea of having genuine local people with ambitions to step up and be local people representing their town, to a political agenda rather than a people agenda. Is the campaign already under threat from the powers who control the local council and local press? In the last Eden District elections of 2011, there were not enough candidates to be elected into the seats. In fact 16 seats of the 38 available were not contested seats. Whilst many genuine people came forward to then be co-opted to take these seats, the residents in these areas had their democratic right taken away in not being given the opportunity to cast a vote. In 2007, 14 seats of the 38 were not contested. If there is clear evidence that points to a lack of candidates, shouldn’t the Eden District Council Democratic and Legal Services consider whether the District Council has too many seats? With the yearly allowance for a district councillor at around £3,500, could savings and efficiencies be made and the democratic right to vote be restored to the people. Recently, people have seen first hand how decisions can be made without consultation at local government. We have witnessed how, like hyenas attacking a lame animal, media can attack to sell more news, when they also have the option to share and promote opinion equally. Central government wants towns to have some independence and it wants local people to have the authority under the Localism Act introduced in 2011, to have a say in what goes on in their towns, with regards to planning, public services, tourism and amenities, finance and general purposes, with the option to keep its town assets and the opportunity to preserve its past as well as look after its future.

For Eden District Council to accept close to 1600 signatures meant knocking on many doors. I would personally like to thank Margaret Clark, Grattan Bowen and Robin House because these people really want the people of Penrith to take charge of their town and their future. Open decision making makes a town. Consultation with the people makes a town. People make a town. Your opinion will be needed, your support will be needed and if you do not understand the process, as people you have the right to stop the process and ask questions. The question still remains, however, what or who can you trust? The politics or the people or both? What happens if you confuse the two? Not all good people make good politicians. People can rise above the politics if given the right support from the community. A big thank to all who did sign the petition and to all those still signing the petition. Lee Quinn

Celebrations & Collaborations as Cumbria turns 40 By Caroline Gunning
In recent weeks there have been many events in Cumbria, organised by various bodies, to celebrate its 40th anniversary, highlight achievements being made in the current economic climate, looking forward to the future and discussing how working collaboratively is key to the success of businesses, of all shapes and sizes. Cumbria Rural Women’s Growth Network held a conference at Upfront Gallery to showcase Cumbria women in business, many of whom were start-ups or fledgling enterprises. No matter what stage of life the business was the enthusiasm and support for other people was outstanding. As well as having an exhibition and display of a range of female led ventures there were seminars throughout the day, some of which required active participation – can you imagine the sound of a room full of 100 women, all of whom are enthusiastic and motivated to succeed? Trust me, a Robbie Williams concert is about the nearest you would hear! Cumbria Food & Drink Network put on a talk with the title of ‘Dying for a Cuppa’. The strapline was ‘why tea (and most other foods and drinks) could soon be off the menu’ – scary thought for anyone in hospitality, catering or food manufacturing. The speaker was Douglas Cross, a forensic environmental investigator who explained that due to “a recent obscure change in European food law now forbids the use of an essential ingredient, used in virtually all food preparation, supply, and importation, and is already causing serious concern in international marketing circles. The deadline for using unauthorised sources of minerals - including fluoride - in foods under EC Regulation 1925/2006 expired in January this year. This closed the final loophole on which proponents of water fluoridation have relied to claim that it is subject solely to food law.” Why does the issue of certain forms of fluoride, when coupled with aluminium, in the water need to be taken seriously? Over the years deposits accumulate in the body, and there has been much research into early onset dementia with certain forms of fluoride and aluminium. Such deposits can be seen in MRI scans of patients with Alzheimer’s. In layman’s terms what does this mean for businesses in Cumbria, namely those on the west coast whose water will be fluoridated? Doug gave three options; CumbrianLocal
1. Do nothing, it will end. But when? 2. Call for a judicial review by getting together to challenge the discrepancy between English Fluoridation law and the Food & Medicinal law of the EC. 3. Be proactive. To comply with the ruling, businesses could start using reverse osmosis equipment to effectively remove fluoride and aluminium from the water before it is used in food preparation. Paul Carr, a representative from Cockermouth Chamber of Trade said “that he was outraged at this mass medication, which is neither effective nor safe. Businesses need to be more aware and take opportunities to promote that they use reverse osmosis and work with each other to lobby against such schemes in West Cumbria.” Paul openly admits that he is a member of Cumbrians Against Fluoride (www.cumbriansagainstfluoride.com) but his main concern is the health, well-being and livelihoods of businesses in Cockermouth, many of who are still affected by the ongoing road works in the town. Is this something we should be concerned about in Eden? Well, as this article is about collaboration it is certainly something we should be aware of, and support our neighbours in objecting to the fluoridation of water in the county. Both Allerdale and Copeland Borough Councils have an anti-fluoridation policy however, as seen in Cork, it takes public opinion and community action to make a difference. With the Government setting a target of 40% fluoridation across England this is not an issue that will be resolved by the time it takes to sup a cup of tea. Now, what do you get when you mix a bunch of Cumbrian businesses, a tall fella from the North East with an ability to see opportunities everywhere, a respected university and a gaggle of media types? The answer is an invitation from the University of Cumbria to attend an UNCoverPR event with Geoff Ramm, international marketing guru, and a panel of people from local media who shared ways that companies can supply local news to them. The University of Cumbria is one of the partner organisations in Cumbria Business Growth Hub and is working closely with businesses to help deliver a range of programmes that benefit small businesses with aspirations to grow. It also provides

Your Local Garden Centre, Tea Room and Farm Shop student placements in the workplace to enable undergraduates to benefit from working on genuine commercial projects that count towards their portfolio and improves their post-degree employment opportunities. The event set about to show how marketing is key to business survival, although equally important is effective cash flow management, because you may very well be good at what you do but in this economic climate there is no point in being bashful – tell people how amazing you are. There were no expensive ideas, nothing that required a large team of experts to deliver, it was all based on simple techniques that everyone, from a micro-business to a multinational can do. Again, back to the theme of the article, it was also about supporting each other by writing recommendations, undertaking joint promotional activities, engaging on social media – both on a personal level and as your business.

Cumbria Business Growth Hub and Cumbria Rural Women’s Growth Network are funded by ERDF, DEFRA and other partners. For more information on upcoming events, funding & business support visit www.cumbriagrowthhub.co.uk. Finally, to bring it back to something at a local level. I was invited to attend a meeting of local hospitality providers in Penrith. Penrith Chamber of Commerce is looking to establish speciality groups and were pleased when Karen and Nick Harvey from Acorn Guest House, Penrith contacted them to say that they were thinking about setting up a networking group for hospitality providers. Nick and Karen attend the council led Eden Tourism Network, which is a great forum for sharing what is going on in Eden, how it is being marketed etc. however, they felt they would benefit from getting to know other accommodation providers to share information, look at joint purchasing, develop skills etc. There will be another meeting in May, this will look to build on the ideas that came out of the first one and discuss ways to move the group forward. As Cumbria turns 40 it is good to see that as two old counties (plus bits from other counties too) came together all those years ago, that Cumbrians are working together and looking forward to the next 40years.

From Glanamman to Radio Man by Connor Strange My name is Connor Strange, I am 18 years of age, and originally from a small village in South West Wales called Glanamman. I have a 10 year old sister and leaving behind my parents and family originating in Wales, I decided to make the move to Penrith about 9 months ago. Since moving up to Penrith, things have been hard, with not being able to find much work. I’ve literally only been able to secure myself temporary work and nothing permanent. It’s been a different contrast and way of life living in Cumbria, but so far I’ve managed to fit in and meet really nice people. Also I’ve been able to develop my confidence, my social skills, and the ability to work with people from different walks of life and independently.
In my spare time, I like to go to the gym and also to do archery. I am a member of a local archery group called Eagle Bowmen which hold their archery sessions at Eamont Bridge Village Hall every Monday and Thursday. The group is run by Chris Battersby, who has helped me to develop my skill in archery a lot. Before I came, I was very inexperienced, so I did some lessons and then decided to become a member of the club. So I try and go to a club night every Thursday, that is if I’m not really busy. The experiences I’ve had have really changed my life and I’ve had the chance to meet different people and make new friends. I never thought I’d be able to present on the radio, so I guess I’ve proven myself wrong in the process.
About 3 months ago, I decided to enrol on a course called the Prince’s Trust Development Programme which lasts for 3 months, and helps young people to get into work, education, or training. It has a 83% success rate which enticed me, and so I decided to enrol. It’s been a challenging course to get through, but I’ve managed to stick it out and finish the course.
The team at Eden FM have really helped me a lot and I’d really like to thank them for their support and their time and generosity towards me.
I’ve been on various different activities whilst on the course, such as the 4 day residential based at Fellside Residential Centre near Caldbeck in Cumbria. Also, we’ve helped the community by restoring a kitchen in Manna House (charity helping homeless people providing food and shelter), and creating a garden allotment for the users of the Edington Centre in Penrith.
That’s all from me, so join me every Saturday from 8am until 10 am on Eden FM for the Breakfast Show with Connor.
In the process, I’ve now managed to secure an apprenticeship with a local Penrith firm called Howdens, so I am very lucky and shall work towards gaining my Level 2 qualification.
By Connor Strange
So, for my work experience, I decided to do my placement in a local community radio station called Eden FM. I did some research into the station, and the idea of doing my work experience placement there really appealed to me. So I contacted the admin there and voila I found myself at somewhere where I never thought I’d be in a million years: a radio station. The various tasks that I have been doing include: planning programs, doing research for the sports program, co-presenting alongside other presenters, and I even got the chance to present my very own show which really excited me. I’ve met a lot of really nice people who have really helped me to develop my confidence as I was very shy before I came to do my work experience at Eden FM. CumbrianLocal

Work Experience At the very start of my work experience week I didn’t expect to be told that, I, Aidan Dawson, would be live on air on Eden FM. Well I was.
The Heart of Your Home
I enjoyed my week very much but the idea that I would be sitting in a studio talking about random topics and playing some my favourite songs made me nervous yet overly excited. I had never spoken on the radio before, however I had been in the newspaper for a mixture of things and on tv once as part of a mini video montage on Blue Peter for Penrith Lights a few years ago. So, I had a small but detailed idea on what to expect. It was exactly how imagined: the big glass window separating the rooms – well it being part of the walls, mixing boards and the computer screens. I also had a small idea of how to use it all and how to present myself on air with advice from friends and especially my friend Zoe who is a presenter on Eden FM. She gave me the great advice of “pretend you’re talking to a close friend.” I was wildly excited the whole time although I was still scared and nervous while being there, especially on air, however I didn’t let it get to me too much (luckily I had the option of playing music when I got tongue tied). I really should mention my friend Brad was on air with me the whole time (he felt the same way about work experience). On air we spoke about: our work experience, Brad living in Australia, the new beauty spa/pamper salon (The Retreat) which we rate 5 stars, ‘Beyond the Fence’ which is a play I was in and most importantly we talked about how a sixteen year old was denied the purchase of spoons. I got a text message during being on air from my friend Hannah saying “me and Lucie are listening to you on Eden FM. Hahahahahaha Spooooooons!!!!!” Yes I got that as a text message. In conclusion my work experience was marvellous. I would like to thank Darren Bean for taking me for work experience and setting up the whole week, also a thank you for Caroline Gunning being part of the week. A few more for Martin, Lee and Connor at Eden FM. Oh, and of course Hannah, Lucie, Adam and Zoe for the advice and biggest for Brad Mattinson for just generally joining in on making this the best work experience week! Guide
The Eden FM Sports and Events magazine will now be launched 17th May 2014. If you’re into your sport it’s the magazine for you; if you’re organising a local event it’s the magazine for you; if you play in a local band or follow local live music it’s the magazine for you and if that’s not enough you’ll not just get to see your sport, events and activities for your team, your club or your school, you’ll get to hear them on the Eden FM sports and events show 2 – 6pm every Saturday. This is an invitation to allow all interested teams, schools, clubs, societies and organisations the chance to be published in the first issue and future issues of this monthly publication. The magazine will showcase the superb sporting prowess in our area and will highlight local events that are not to be missed.
Get your committee on board, get your board onboard, but just remember we need stories, photographs, with consent sent in now. The Eden FM Sports and Events guide will allow clubs to promote themselves to a wider audience and hopefully help them recruit new members. It will allow clubs to give regular monthly updates on how they have been performing, what is coming up in the future and who to contact if you would like to join them. Articles in the magazine will have a personal touch as they will mainly be written by members of their own organisation. Not press releases, just great stories please, send them in. Youth participation in sports and events is the future of the region’s success. With this in mind, the new magazine will have built on having an extensive coverage of what has been going on at school and youth team

Easedale Tarn Peaks & Pathways Nick Wells
This is one of the larger Lake District tarns, situated close to Helm Crag and lies high in a Lakeland valley about two miles from Grasmere. After parking up in Grasmere village, we walked up Easedale road for about half a mile to a footbridge over the beck, which has a sign for Easedale Tarn. We followed Easedale Beck across some meadows, then headed up towards Sour Milk Ghyll, which derives its curious name from its white, swirling waters, flowing out of the tarn and descending through a series of waterfalls, which are impressive after heavy rain.
of a crater, draining water from the surrounding hills. Water lilies decorate the surface in some areas, on what is said to be 70 feet deep in places, and contains brown trout, perch and eels. This is a very busy place in the summer, due to it’s easy access for tourists with no equipment. Very much worth a visit, this was also a regular haunt for Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. For the more serious walkers, there is a trail that leads from the tarn taking you to Helm Crag (one of Wainright’s favourite fells), which I will be writing about soon.
Soon we arrived at the tarn, en-closed by Tarn Crag, Castle How and Blea Rigg.
We returned to Grasmere by the way we came. This walk is four miles in all, and takes about two and a half hours. I would rate this walk as easy.
The Tarn fills a vast hollow which has the appearance

The residue of the money has been donated to the eight Mountain Rescue Teams that provide emergency cover to walkers across the route of the Coast to Coast. The eight teams are: Cockermouth, Keswick, Patterdale, Penrith, Kirkby Stephen, Swaledale, Cleveland and Scarborough & Ryedale.

One of the teams, Kirkby Stephen MRT, has decided to put the donation towards the purchase of a mobile satellite broadband internet system, so internet communications can be set up wherever an advance control vehicle is placed. The system will also provide resilience in case the base internet connection goes down. Kirkby Stephen team member, David Stewart said: ‘Internet access is steadily becoming much more integral to the efficiency of searches and in keeping other emergency services up to date on progress. This sort of one-off expenditure is on top of the funds the team needs to simply run its operations, so it is really welcome that The Wainwright Society is able to make such a significant donation towards the purchase of the equipment.’ The Society will be producing a 2015 Calendar, which will go on sale later this year. The profits from sales of the 2015 Calendar will be donated to the Brathay Exploration Trust, the Society’s main beneficiary this year. Bite size treats for a good cause by Lee Quinn
It’s always been a ‘piece of cake’ raising funds at Maggies Bakery for a number of years. Yes, when baking large trays of cakes, sponges, they trim the edges and corners and rather than throw them away, they take donations for these bite side treats. Each month, sometimes longer, they collect for local charities, clubs, voluntary groups, local organisations and some individual with needs. Many organisations and individuals have benefit from these donations that include some well known, like Penrith Mountain Rescue and The Great North Air Ambulance. Then there are some, not always so well known like Tree of Hope and Wishem Well. Our thanks to Maggies Bakery for adding Eden FM Radio to this list.
The Old & the New by Lee Quinn
The wait is over and the print date will be announced shortly, followed by the delivery date. With so many enquiries and boards reserved, it is possible and a positive concern that when we do release the board on sale date, most of the Penrith and Eden Valley boards would have already been sold. Like the selling of shares, a £24.99 investment and only 3,000 shares available, some may be too late. We can only imagine what the potential sales could have been had this ‘positive’ story and moment in the history of Penrith and the Eden Valley been a ‘good news’ worthy story for the local paper. It is unfortunate that those people not in circulation of the Cumbrian Local or ear shot of Eden FM may just miss out. The layout of the board is now complete. Next month you will be looking at the Penrith and Eden Valley Monopoly board for the first time. Next month the launch of this unique brand that has captured the area where we live will monopolise many homes and businesses. There will also be a full update on the availability.
