Welcome to the January edition of your Eden Local How is your start to 2017? My seasonal break reflected a need to take time out, what a year! Did you have a good break? It’s important I think for all of us to have time to take a moment out doing nothing, collecting our thoughts, taking a walk, or just sitting in a room or on a bench in the park. You can have a coffee on your own and I know some have no choice but to do this. I love to people watch wherever I am. I find this relaxing and fascinating. Do we have thoughts or talk to ourselves on the inside? I know with my nan, when I pop in to see her, which is quite a few times throughout the week, she’ll be airing a conversation out loud, a bit little Shirley Valentine did with her kitchen wall. If you haven’t seen the film, it’s a must. Maybe sometimes when we are in that space and we look around feeling hard done by, or we tear ourselves away from our mobile devices, we actually get to realise it’s not always about the big events in the year but all those little things around us all the time. A Happy New year to you and thank you again for picking up your Eden Local and taking the time out to have a read. I hope you don’t mind, but this year I’m going to change things around a little. It’s just something that occurred to me last year and in looking back at last January, this year is already quite different so I’ll be adapting to that change that is needed. Throughout 2016 whilst out on deliveries and just talking to people generally that I had never met, I was quite taken back by how positive people were who took the magazine out of my hand and how much they welcomed the little stories and updates. Well this won’t be changing much, but one thing I do know is a rest is as good as a holiday and I am feeling much refreshed. Taking this into my work, a refreshed approach with the aim of bringing in more stories and updates with some of this content running through the whole of 2017. I’ve vented my spleen a bit with my thoughts on why it appears to be a national day every day for something, there’s even a Lemon Puff day and other things you couldn’t imagine! My point is made on pages 6, 10 and 11. I have been reflecting on how lucky I am to

have the opportunity every week to meet and talk to people about their work and their lives, write about them every month. Taking some time out with Marvin of Marvin’s Jewellers was truly wonderful, I hope you’ll enjoy what we discussed about his life since he was fifteen on pages 8 – 9. Thank you Marvin, Kath and Mark. On page 12 we have a new feature, which some of you may want to get involved with. I’ve got plenty of items in my loft to talk about. Many happy memories can be found in a box stored away and forgotten about. ‘It’s a Classic from the Attic’ will feature throughout 2017. Another wonderful experience reflected on, that I will treasure was working with Neil Hodgson who has now retired from farming at Carleton farm, Penrith. Some highlights are featured on page 18 of that time shared. Thank you Neil and Jean. Like a Lunar eclipse, this year there will be more alignment with Eden FM and Eden Local as I will be more involved in the studios, with the development of new shows and many of the new Eden FM radio shows that the team and I will be talking about, will be linked to stories and advertising presented in the Eden Local and other publications produced by Cumbrian Local Publications Ltd. We have called the concept ‘Being Seen and Heard’ across the community we serve. Those of you involved in running a business, you might see something in our advertising sale this month. For those reading, you might see it as a different way of saying Eden Local welcomes new advertisers every month, but what I have to say is thank you to all that have supported the publication throughout 2016 by placing advertising. Those regularly reading the community magazine will know some of these businesses have been with Eden Local since it began. My thanks to the delivery teams, Chris in design and all the volunteer writers for all their effort and support throughout 2016, which of course includes Pamela from next door and all members of my family who all make a contribution towards helping produce and deliver your community magazine. 2017 here we come!

How many days In January? The month of January was added to the Roman calendar by Numa Pompilius around 700 BC so that the calendar would equal a standard lunar year of 355 days. January became the first month of the year around 450 BC, although March was originally the first month of the year in the old Roman calendar. January originally consisted of 30 days when it was added to the 10-month Roman calendar. However, a day was added making it 31 days long in 46 BC by Julius Caesar when he reformed the Roman calendar. The Julian calendar was no longer dependent on the observation of the new moon but simply followed an algorithm of introducing a leap day every four years.

This created a dissociation of the calendar month from the lunation. The Gregorian calendar was introduced as a refinement of the Julian calendar in 1582. January is named after the Roman god, Janus, the god of doors because this month is the door to the year. The Roman god Janus represents all beginnings and possesses the ability to see all things past and future. Am I being cynical but January for me is widely publicised as a don’t drink alcohol month, don’t eat much month and take a look at yourself month or a get yourself in order month. Depressing? Possibly is for local landlords and some deep fried food establishments. In the middle of all of that whether you still have a New Year’s resolution that you haven’t broken yet, perhaps you’re in a trend where every day is a national day or is this, to coin a phrase from an American film with the same name, ‘Only in America’. Something I really started to notice last year and it seems to be growing, is that every day seems to be a national day for one reason or another. Why is that and how did it happen? Being a bit of a traditionalist, for me 1st January is New Year’s Day. It’s a national day for everyone in the world I would have thought. It was good enough for the Romans. But not anymore it would seem. When did these new national days start creeping in? Well I did a bit of research. It’s no surprise that social media

Time stands still for no man, from old ropes to diamond rings came the ½ penny, one penny and the two penny piece. It was a dream job for Marvin, especially with an annual increase of five shillings (25p) each year! In his work at Copping and Wilson of Carlisle, on Fridays his job was to go round the state management pubs in Carlisle to wind up all the clocks. A calling for all young men meant that from 1956 - 1958 Marvin went off to complete his National Service in the Medical Corp for two years. On his return, for doing his duty for Queen and country, Marvin worked for JG Johnston of 4 Market Square on the site where Penrith Posters is today. He completed a further four years on repairing watches and clocks.

We know him as Marvin and we know the business as Marvin’s Jewellers in Angel lane, formerly the premises of a Rope and twine shop called Clarksons, but prior to that back in 1881, it was a pub called the King of Prussia. I am not one to assume but a lot of people who read this article will reflect on the generations that have walked through the doors of 2 – 3 Angel Lane.

Times were changing. The first James Bond film, Dr No, had its world premiere at the London Pavilion in Piccadilly Circus. The next day the Beatles released their first single ‘Love me do’, which reached number seventeen in the UK charts. It was the year when TV drama, in black

Son of Paula and Charles, who worked in an insurance business at age 15, Marvin left school and he started a six year apprenticeship repairing watches and clocks with a firm called Copping and Wilson. His wages then were fifteen shillings a week. That’s about 75p for those that started counting their money from 1970 when decimalisation came in. Converting a shilling to 5p, a six pence was converted to two and a half pence. Yes the farthing was gone along with the old penny and in

and white of course, Z-Cars, on the small screen it’s harder realism, took over from Dixon of Dock Green “Evening all”, police still on bikes. The year was 1962 and in Penrith the property at 2-3 Angel Lane became available for rent. Marvin, with £100 in his pocket made the biggest decision in his life at that time. That’s right; he married Kath on 12th July 1962. So one thing Marvin won’t forget is the anniversary of his business, the beginning of a 55 year career as a jeweller would follow. To help make the new business work, Kath continued with her work at the Penrith Observer newspaper; her wage covering the bills and putting food on the table for the first four years. In that time Marvin would man the shop during the day, then in the evening he would do the watch, clock and jewellery repairs. All the income from the jewellery business went back into it in order to build their new business.

In discussing much of their livs and family, I did set them some questions to get a good base of information. I asked Marvin what he remembered about jewellery in the 60’s and one thing he recalled was the price of gold. “You could buy a wedding ring for three guineas and three shillings back then; that’s about £3.15 now”, he said. Moving on into the 70’s, we saw technology influencing jewellery with the introduction of the first battery operated watch. Marvin referred to them as ‘Quartz watches’, but the 70’s also saw the arrival of another gem, their son Mark was born in 1973. As we moved into the 80’s, what was the trend? Marvin explained that “people were asking for sapphire and diamond cluster rings, in the same style as Lady Diana’s engagement ring”. I then recalled with him the range of broaches that were also made in a very similar style to those worn by Lady Diana. Towards the end of the 80’s in 1989 Mark joined the business. “As a young lad he was very enthusiastic at age 16”, Marvin explained was noted by a customer then. “First time you told me that dad”, Mark chipped in. But Mark’s eyes still light up when he sees new pieces and pieces that come in for repair. It’s a passion inherited. We discussed so many things and whilst gold, silver and diamonds are all commodities of beauty in a world market that goes up and down, looking around in the shop you won’t

see two pieces of jewellery the same. Kath said “you learn something new every day’’ and with the bespoke work Marvin’s jewellers commission new unique pieces which are created as part of their service. So, just because it’s not in the window, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, yet! Working through the decades of the trends and changes in the products, in the 90’s it was handmade gold chains and as we moved into the Millennium, what re-emerged was platinum and silver jewellery I was reliably informed. In all the jewellery in 55 years that had passed through Marvin’s hands, I asked him one final question and that was is there a favourite piece you always remember? “Yes, a late Victorian Silver fronted old cut diamond ‘dagger’ broach”.

It was a painful experience for me when I dropped it in August last year on to a stone floor and the second hand came off. Painful because when I took it to Marvin, he took the watch, asked me to hold out my hand and then slapped the back of it and said “Come back in 5 minutes”. I won’t drop it again; I’ve been told! The most valuable commodity that we so commonly take for granted is what we should value the most and that’s TIME. Every hour, every minute, every second, you make them count. Many things can be replaced but time can’t, and it waits for no man! Marvin’s a man who knows this only too well. My thanks to Marvin, Kath and to Mark for their moment in time shared and helping with this short summary of their life and business to date. The future is looking good following the birth of Marvin’s first grandchild ‘April Hannah’ in 2015, who as I understand it has already taken a shine to what at the moment are shiny and bright things. Maybe it’s inherited? Marvin's Jewellers 2- 3 Angel Lane, Penrith, CA11 7BP 01768 862938

I have only known about Marvin’s jewellers for probably 20 years, when I first came to Penrith. There are 1000’s of people who have known Marvin and his family for their life time. Only in the last few months have they got to know me. I have two memories that I can hold of my late grandfathers. One is his Argyll and Southern Highlanders Cap badge and the other is a gold watch presented to him for 25 years’ service as an engineer back in the 70s. The watch didn’t work when I was given it by my grandfather 10 years ago. Marvin put that right.

Continuation from page 6 has been a key driver of fanning this fire of bringing these days to us, so what did I find? In truth I found a number of sites. You can note them as a reference because like me you might think why? Some are described as national days or national awareness days and some are national awareness months. There are calendars for all of them, but maybe like some of you, my wall is only so big and my desk, like my diary is only so big. On the site www.nationaldaycalendar.com you can celebrate every day it says. The website looks to be USA based and it claims there are three national days for 1st January, including New Year’s Day. We could question origin and it does carry some health warnings! The site does claim that 1st January is also National Bloody Mary Day, which then adds ‘Within our research, we were unable to identify the origins of National Bloody Mary Day’ however there is an origin for their 1st January National Hangover day and this is how it came about. ‘At a get together at the Oven and Tap, a restaurant in Bentonville, Arkansas in October 2015, people were talking about National Days. The conversation then turned to what day on the calendar had little or no National Days attached to it. When it was announced that January 1 was only known as New Year’s Day, Keegan Calligar and Marlo Anderson both stated simultaneously that it should be National Hangover Day. National Hangover Day was submitted by Keegan Calligar and Marlo Anderson in

October 2015. The day was approved by the registrar of National Day Calendar in November of 2015. I can’t imagine what you must be thinking but wait for it; there are over 1,200 national days according to this site. It doesn’t stop there as there are 93 National Days in January on this site, yes 93 days spread over 31! 2nd January according to this site is National Cream Puff Day! Dessert and pastry lovers alike get to celebrate this delicious French creation. The site then states once again “Within our research, we were unable to find the creator of National Cream Puff Day”. I have to admit, I had the same problem when I searched for National ‘I left my brain at home day’! But to summarise this research, before we look at the National Awareness Day site, which has National Dry January, Love your Liver January and Obesity awareness week commencing 9th January on the nationaldaycalendar.com site with the 1200 days of the 93 national days in January, there are 35 food type national days which include two fruits mentioned, Apricot Day is one and Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is another. I think it takes a turn from there once you celebrate Cream Puff, Whipped Cream, Shortcake, English Toffee, Hot Pastrami Sandwich, Strawberry Ice Cream, Peking Duck, Popcorn, Butter Crunch and Cheese Lover’s. Then we are only as far as 23rd and of course that’s Pie day followed by Peanut Butter day on the same day as Beer can day. It’s a heavy month followed by Irish Coffee, Peanut Brittle, Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Pancake and we reach 30th to find Croissant Day. Has

Happy Snappy snapper, re-introducing the polaroid camera There I was talking, as you do to my 17 old daughter. You know who she is as it’s a family business putting this magazine together. We were talking about cameras. A few of her friends had these polaroid cameras, instant photos developed immediately. Wow I thought; technology has moved on ‘not’! Then I thought some things are that good they don’t need to and you can only take them so far. So I was then shown these amazing cameras online, ranging from £80 to nearly £500. One of them was presented as ‘the 90s style Polaroid 600-type camera with a rounded body–the most recent of classic 600 models. The perfect camera for anyone who’s just getting started with instant photography. It has an easy to use point and shoot style, with a built-in flash, fixed-focus lens and simple controls for adjusting exposure levels’. There is always something going on in our house. January is a sort out month. The challenge before Christmas was to empty the garage as we needed the space for the table tennis table and the table

football. This is then followed by a sort out of the loft to remove all the rubbish we put up there before Christmas period; that is the early 2017 challenge of actually sorting out everything in the loft but I think there is a story or two there many more! In a career past when I used to design and facilitate team building and organisational development programmes I was constantly creating problem solving games and tasks to develop and access skills and competency. This was for corporate clients, schools and colleges and I used what we called then in the 90s ‘Icebreakers’ to kick start many of the programmes my team or I were facilitating. For some programmes we would use a format of treasure hunts. Maps, compasses and problem solving tasks would be set across a time period, within a radius of up to 20 miles, each team had a Polaroid 600 camera. Each team was given eight Polaroid photos already developed which had been taken when the treasure hunt was set out. One of the tasks was to recapture the exact same photo, the angle and distance etc. Not all easy especially the ones taken on

a moving steam train. I suppose it was then the early days of the Polaroid Express! Two weeks ago however, it meant that sitting on the landing in a box, with the annual sorting when we were talking Polaroid, there were Five Polaroid 600 cameras, which I had purchased in 1996/7. Thirty years on an investment was made. My £19.99 cameras are worth slightly more; of course the film cartridge for eight photos however is £16.99! Did you know the founder of Polaroid was Edwin Land who first demonstrated the instant camera on February 21, 1947 at a meeting of the Optical Society of America in New York City. What is Polaroid? Well, it’s a type of synthetic plastic sheet used to polarize light. The chemicals react then do the rest when it is exposed.

OUT IN THE FIELD WITH NEIL feasting on them. The only bonus of being near the river if only it had been more favourable. Battling the elements of nature, crops frozen in the ground, saturated in the rain and dried out in the sun, I got to see it all. I saw how the milk prices made it a worthless task of having a small dairy herd. The sheds are now empty, all is quiet and the fields look like they’ll be properties and gardens soon. But I thank Neil and his family for a life experience and some great time shared. Soon after I launched the Eden Local, my appetite for local food took me to Carleton Farm shop as it was then. I enjoyed the real taste so much of the local carrots, parsnips, leeks, potatoes and swedes, I wanted to find out more. I first spoke to Jean Hodgson and suggested that I would like to run with a whole series of articles following the farming season. Passionate about that real taste, it was the start of great things which meant I got to try my first goose in the March that followed and my first local marmalade, which I buy today that is made in Kirkby Stephen. I was hooked on the organic Brie from Appleby, but the day I sat down with Neil at his table just after milking and had that milk, well it’s a taste you don’t forget. I had tasted it only once before on a dairy farm when I was nine.

the years that followed constantly got washed away, it is now just an area for grazing. A family use to a struggle, Neil’s sons were key to the operation, whilst Jean looked after the shop. A new concept to them when they opened, but hit a few months after when Cumbria was the worst area to be hit by Foot and Mouth. I’ve lost count of how times Neil’s prime crops were eaten by rabbits! I remember being out with him for many hours planting leeks over the hill past Langwathby where the potato store was and within days, not even weeks, the rabbits were

The hours and the weather are a trial enough for any farmer. Neil had several fields in different locations all around Penrith. Back in 2010/11 potatoes, leeks and barley were near the Cumbria Police Head Quarters at Carleton, but since those years after the flooding of those areas, the barley and the leeks stopped, then eventually the potatoes which in EdenLocal

If anything, I learnt one thing and that was I would never want to trade places with Neil, but on the odd day when we were out in the fields looking across the valley, I caught having that moment of doing the same and he said, “Why would I want to do anything else with this as a view”. We then dug up some new season potatoes for tea. Well to get into writing about local produce one has to experience that moment from the time it is taken from the ground, taken home and prepared, then served that same day. Enjoy your retirement Neil and Jean.

17-25 turned into ‘Terrible People’ by Catherine Divers and Emily Quinn

This month’s article is not the follow up I said it could be. Next month I will continue with my nags and rants about society and today’s way of living that I passionately delved into writing about. I’ve decided to do something a little bit different this month. I’m taking part in a play being performed in February, directed by a friend of mine and to give her the recognition she and the play deserve, this month we’re talking about the play. Catherine has come a long way with writing and directing this play and I know I speak for us all when I say we can’t wait to perform it! Rehearsals have been really good fun, but at the same time we’ve been pushed. The themes and storyline are exciting and even just reading the play had us all on edge. Performing it is a whole other ball game! Being a part of ‘Terrible People’ is such a wonderful way to kick off 2017 and I hope I see you guys there. Who knows; maybe Catherine is the next Shakespeare? Here’s what she has to say about it: ‘Terrible People’ begun as a ‘what if?’ question between Joe Dodd and myself in April last year. From then on, we developed the plot, wrote the script, and somehow got an amazing group of actors to be in it. We’re performing the play at Penrith Playhouse on 23rd and 24th of February and rehearsals are well underway. I am incredibly excited to show off the amazing work everyone has put in. Although almost all involved are from Ullswater Community College, we are mostly independent of the Drama Department. As this is brand new writing and my first attempt at directing, it has been an amazing opportunity to bring together so many

likeminded people whilst very much learning on the job. ‘Terrible People’ is about four students who are attempting to navigate their new world after their mutual friend Max dies. The idea initially came about when we realised we wanted to write something about loss in the student body, but has developed hugely from there. The four main characters all have their individual arcs - redemption, consequences, bridge-burning and friendship are themes for all of them. Edward (Ewan Harkes) becomes increasingly obsessive over Yasmine (Daisy Madarani), while she herself has conflict with her boyfriend Tyler (Jordan Spooner), who attempts to reconcile his past and current behaviour. Grace’s (Emily Quinn) long term power imbalance with Yasmine starts to even out as Grace scrambles to take hold of new leverage against her. The technical side of ‘Terrible People’ is being helped along by our very strong creative team who agreed to take part in this process; Ella Gurney (costume), Hilda Aluoch (set) and Ellsa Myers (lighting). The visuals of ‘Terrible People’ are very much aware and influenced by the modern day and are in part inspired by ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, a play directed by Marianne Elliott. We are also offering local businesses the opportunity to sponsor us in return for advertising space in the programme, so if you would like to get in touch with me about that, or with any other queries or if you would like to reserve tickets, please email me at catherine.divers@hotmail.co.uk. Tickets are £4 (£3 for concessions).

First up was German band Kraftwerk, followed by a wave of British synth pop. The first band, still my favourite today and last month rekindled when I saw them again was the Human League, then Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, followed by Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, before girls’ started screaming at them!

The land on either side of the path also needs to be repaired and protected from further damage. This will require stone to be brought in by helicopter, which will add to the cost of the repair. The work is scheduled to be undertaken during 2018.

The Wainwright Society has chosen Fix the Fells, the body that repairs upland paths in the Lake District as the main beneficiary of its fundraising during 2017. Money will be raised from donations by Society members taking part in its annual charity ‘Challenge’ together with sales of its Society calendar. The money will be used to repair Long Stile, the final ascent on to the summit of High Street in the Far Eastern Fells, between Ullswater and Haweswater. Alfred Wainwright, who wrote seven Pictorial Guides to the Lake District fells, considered this ascent from Mardale to be the finest way to the summit. He wrote: ‘The ridge of Rough Crag and the rocky stairway of Long Stile together form the connoisseur’s route up High Street, the only route that discloses the finer characteristics of the fell. The ascent is a classic, leading directly along the crest of a long, straight ridge that permits of no variation from the valley to the summit. The views are

In the last ten years it has repaired more than 200 sections of fell paths using a variety of traditional techniques. Joanne Backshall, Fix the Fells Programme Manager, said: ‘We are delighted that The Wainwright Society is being so generous and supporting our vital work to protect some of the most beautiful parts of the Lake District. It will allow us to repair a popular route that was loved by Alfred Wainwright and mean that generations to come can enjoy it as well.’ If you would like to know more about The Wainwright Society, log on to the website at www.wainwright.org. uk or email secretary@ wainwright.org.uk Derek Cockell Secretary - The Wainwright Society

Bonnie Blues Update By Karl Collinson

Penrith AFC have gone through significant changes in 2016 with Matt Henney being relieved of his services in September. The club are delighted to have Jim Nichols in the manager’s seat with Shaun Gardner and Jordan Carrigan taking up the assistant’s role. Jim was no.2 beforehand and is all familiar with what’s important at the club and is thriving on driving the club forward. We equalled our best ever run in the FA Vase and are through to the quarter final of the Cumberland Cup and also set for a 3rd round league cup tie at South Shields. We currently sit 17th in Northern League Division 1 but have a significant number of games in hand which potentially could have us sitting in the top 10. During the summer the club were delighted that captain Grant Davidson chose to stay at Frenchfield Park despite interest from our Cumbrian neighbours, Workington Reds. Also, striker Martyn Coleman returned from his spell at South Shields and in November, Penrith born winger, Robbie Hebson came back to rejoin the Bonny Blues after playing for Workington Reds.

Mathew Read and Jonny Jamieson also returned to Frenchfield Park after season spells with other clubs. Off the field, the club have acquired a number of sophisticated machinery to help enable us to carry out much needed work on the pitch. Unfortunately, the club are still in on running discussions with their landlords, Eden District Council, regarding the details of the lease but are confident that an agreement can be made early in the new year. We teamed up with Sports giants, Sondico Pro before the season which included them supplying us with all match kits, training gear and equipment. We also have a brand new online clubshop which can be accessed via the website www.pitchero.com/clubs/penrithafc and follow the shopping link. Looking forward, the club are in a strong position with a squad of over 20 strong and skillful players. We continue to recruit from the local area with striker Bobby Atkinson joining us from Appleby. Plans are in place to further extend the clubhouse at Frenchfield Park and our partnership with Newton Rigg college is growing stronger as we continue to help each other. The Juniors have enjoyed a positive year with many of the teams enjoying success in the Penrith and District Junior league. The club currently have 18 boy’s and girls teams from U8s through to U16s. The ladies again continue to impress in their very competitive North Lancashire league and had a very successful F.A. Cup run. Below the 1st team the club have 3 senior teams at Westmorland league level, Reserves, Academy and Penrith Town which are all playing good football and offer fantastic opportunities to all local wannabe footballers.

The Importance of Village Cricket By Paul Telford

How important is Village Cricket? Well, if you’re a postman probably not very – the daily yomp around town or ‘drive – get out – walk there – walk back - get in – drive’ cycle is more than sufficient to keep the Chief Medical Office off your case, since you’re way beyond the 30 minutes/day ‘moderate’ exercise commonly recommended for avoiding a ‘sedentary lifestyle’ [Wikipedia def: ‘a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity’]. But what of the features of ‘sedentary lifestyle’? Well – consider this - sedentary activities include ‘sitting, reading, socialising, watching television, playing video games, and computer use for

much of the day with little or no vigorous physical exercise’. Surely I can’t be ‘sedentary’, can I? - I have to pass a stringent medical and fitness test every year to keep my job – my job sitting, reading, telephoning, watching TV (the news!) and computing !! The fact is, like it or not, modern living is more sedentary than ever before. There is more retirement, less manual work, more technology, and physical effort is seen as inefficient in some vocations, and as a Health & Safety risk in others – best avoided!

Thank goodness you might think, that many of our lives outside of work – family or otherwise – are also driven by myriad modern opportunity and demand Seiko split-second timing, Google calendar (other organisers are available – as are other watches!) and nerves of steel to cope with high-velocity daily routine. Come to think of it – around work I cram in a schedule not unlike the postman, just unpaid and without the letters. Roll-on the 26hr day. So, whether its sedentary lifestyle or the controlled chaos of modern living that dominates your day – you need Village Cricket. It has the power to motivate, stimulate, interest and even excite the most lethargic, unflappable souls – I know, I’ve seen it with my own eyes! The quiet ones are the worst! And it has the alter-ego to also calm the frenzied, with its melodic repetition, predictable changing of ends and typically English-summer balm. If you’re playing it requires movement, possibly running. That’s a good thing. If you’re umpiring, scoring or watching, it requires you to stay awhile – always longer than intended and at least ‘for another over’, and possibly to partake in ‘tea’. That’s also a good thing. It will almost certainly result

A point to note on the policy of what we print and why in conversation – of a permissible sort even though in part defining ‘sedentary’ - and you’ll feel connected to people and the sporting endeavour taking place in front of you, and detached from the ‘norm’ or ‘bustle’ of modern living. Timeless – that’s cricket. Which is good, because this season Staffield CC were relegated to Division 1 of the Eden Valley League! Least said the better. The important thing, for all the reasons stated and many, many more, is that cricket will still be played in 2017 – by Staffield and lots of other clubs, though sadly not as many as even in 2016. So find your local club, go and watch and wonder at the physical prowess on show (lol). So you see Village Cricket is important – and it needs you too. Walk to the ground, walk round the boundary (always right for runs, left for loss of wickets!), maybe volunteer for DIY jobs or kids’ coaching – every Club will have a ‘plan’ and aspirations – all going on even over winter with fundraising events, maintenance and planning – meaning walks to the pub, chatter and, yes, manual labour! Come on – get involved! For more information on where to get less sedentary visit www.evcl.play-cricket.com (other Leagues are available!!)

In all the feedback I get, rarely is it negative. Someone did once insist a few years back on having multiple pages of advertising only to then criticise that in the month that followed, they said there was too much advertising in the magazine! Well, the statement in itself is something that gives you an idea of the person and some of the obvious challenges we have in pleasing everybody. Clearly they never read the magazine in any great detail on a regular basis. With the exception of that time, the spilt on text to monthly advertising space these last 2-3 years has been an average 17 -19 pages of text/photography (including front cover) compared to advertising space taking about 13 -15 pages via various sizes and dimensions. To co-ordinate, design, print and post your Eden Local magazine through your doors for free, the non-editorial sections have to generate enough revenue to cover these costs. Because our advertising costs are affordable to any business no matter what its size, we do attract a lot of new business. Everyone has to start somewhere and not everyone can afford to advertise in local press, so the Eden Local provides this platform. Coming up next month? Quite a lot actually, especially with these new features and the launch of so many new shows on Eden FM radio. There will be a featured business, a classic from the attic, 17 – 25 lands in the A level exam time January schedule, but I’ll obviously find out all about February for you and there could be an up close and personal feature of a local band, if I find one!
