Welcome to the July edition of your Cumbrian Local Greetings from a Guest Editor A brief phone call late one Friday from Lee Quinn informing me that he was heading away on a much needed, and well earned, family holiday resulted in his parting words “could you keep an eye on things and write the editor’s note?” Hmm, of course?! So, please bear with me as I wrestle with words that will do justice to the work of the contributors in this edition. In between the articles that encourage you to explore, be entertained, employed, energy efficient or enterprising in Eden and beyond, there are our fabulous advertisers, offering great products. In fact, you could probably restyle your home from roof to renewables simply using them. The 4th July in the USA is celebrated as Independence Day, whereas over here there is a growing movement to support local business on Independents Day every 4th July and Small Business Saturday, on the first Saturday in December. Penrith and Appleby-in-Westmorland both signed up as Totally Locally towns, which help give independent businesses a fabulous platform to promote themselves and invite customers to explore some hidden gems. As an independent business, this magazine has been able to give visibility to sectors, subjects and services that might not have been able to do this elsewhere, shared community news stories rather than press releases and provided affordable glossy advertising. It certainly gave me a space to write about the things I encounter day by day. My doctor, whilst she was wielding a great needle in my direction, said how much she enjoyed reading my articles. That conversation sparked the idea for a future article. Don’t worry there’s no guts and gore, just a look at the way that our rural GP practices are working together to offer a diverse range of well-being and health care services in the community. I hope you enjoy our July edition and we look forward to catching up with you, either at Penrith Show where you should be able to buy your own Penrith & Eden Valley Monopoly board, or in September when we’ll again be looking at the people and places that make our corner of Cumbria such an inspiring, and independent, place to be. Book Review: Undressed for Dinner There are many things to be proud of in our lovely county. Penrith, for example, is a destination town because of the uniqueness of its shops and businesses, making it a vibrant and interesting place to visit. As an independent bookseller it is a pleasure to be able to support local independent publishers so that our bookshop has a unique feel, rather than offering a replica of what you may see in the supermarkets or big chain bookshops. In our opinion one of the best local publishers that our county can be proud of is Hayloft, led by Dawn Robertson, and established in 1988 literally in a converted hayloft in Kirkby Stephen. Dawn describes Hayloft as “probably the loneliest publishing company in the UK and possibly the highest at around 1,000 feet above sea level - so it’s worth a visit even if just to see the view 40 miles down the Eden Valley as far as Saddleback in the Lake District and, on a clear day, as far as the Solway Firth.” Hayloft has now published over 125 titles, carefully selected by Dawn, and can pride itself on the quality of the books it produces on a range of subjects, including history, mountaineering, humour, memoirs, novels and rural life, so far winning five awards at the Lakeland Book of the Year competition. Hayloft will be showcasing their books at Wordsworth Bookshop throughout the Eden Food and Farming Festival week 19th -26th July so do be sure to call in and see the range. One of Hayloft’s most entertaining books, and also shortlisted for Lakeland Book of the Year 2014, is Undressed for Dinner by Simon Temple-Bennett, or as its subtitle explains “The Story of a Family trying to lead an ordinary life in an extraordinary place”. In 1997 Simon and his wife Wendy moved from London and bought the near derelict Augill Castle at the foot of the Cumbrian fells. Today it is an internationally renowned hotel but that was never really the plan… The book has essentially been 16 years in the making, as it gives an honest, and in Simon’s own words, “painfully frank” account of the antics involved setting up the hotel while juggling family life including two children, a dog, a cat, several chickens, a turkey and six goats! This is a book that is difficult to put down once started, as the real anecdotes and diverse characters we meet of Simon’s neighbours, guests and animals, are recounted by him in a warm and entertaining way. He writes with a lovely, chatty style and takes us from moments of laughing out loud to some of real poignancy, particularly when he shares thought provoking and imaginary conversations with his dead father about experiencing the ups and downs of hotel life. Readers may know that Augill Castle is now an internationally renowned independent hotel and it is a real joy to be able to have these glimpses behind the scenes of the blood, sweat and tears it took to achieve this successful standard. This is an entertaining read and one that I would highly recommend, particularly suitable for those who work in the hospitality industry who no doubt will relate to many of Simon’s tales. Above all though, Simon proves himself to be an excellent observer of people and I hope in the future we may hear more tales from Augill Castle. Simon Temple-Bennett will be speaking about his book Undressed for Dinner at Wordsworth Bookshop on Tuesday 22nd July at 7pm. Tree Surgeon, Vet, Doctor or Shoulder-pads? By Caroline Gunning

As every school and college leaver will tell you, the day they finally finish feels like freedom however, in reality they enter the world of deadlines and dreams. Not for them the carefree days of summer, oh no, they anxiously await the results of their exams and pondering on the big question – what next? What next? A huge question at 16, 18 or 21 – or to be honest, at 40years old it’s still a question that I don’t know how to answer. Last month I spoke at a women’s business event, where I suggested that to draw out something more personal, but not intrusive, was to ask others what they had wanted to be when they grew up. Most of us can all recall being starry eyed youngsters with grazed knees, no idea what time it was and thinking only as far as what was for tea. My 8 year old self wanted to become a tree surgeon, because I spent every spare moment in the woods and learnt that trees got sick just like humans and animals. I wanted to help and take care of something. At the time my mother was ill with cancer and I knew I couldn’t cure her because being a doctor was something you had to be really, really, really old to do, and I didn’t (and still don’t) like cats so being a vet wasn’t going to happen either. So climbing trees and making fires sounded good to me. When I reached the very grown up age of 11 I decided that law was the career for me - that was the fault of the plethora of US dramas invading our shores at the time. Does

anyone else remember L.A. Law? I pursued this path into college, selecting courses that would stand me in good stead for becoming a mega rich, shoulderpad wearing lawyer. I applied to universities and was accepted to study European Law with French and Dutch language, but as luck had it I fell ill and couldn’t sit my exams. Bang! There went my wonderful career with the UN legal department. So, leaving school with a good set of GCSEs, no A Levels but a whole load of confidence and determination saw me walk into the job centre, apply for a receptionist job, attend the interview and start the following day. Within 3 months I was promoted to a sales administrator. Since then I’ve worked with amazing companies, varying projects and have come to a career that enables me to use all I have learned to help others. I guess in a roundabout way I am doing what my 8 year old self wanted to do. At the recent Penrith Chamber of Trade and Commerce Dinner, Richard Utting, President of the Chamber, spoke of his belief in encouraging young people to actively seek opportunities to experience a wide range of businesses, some of which could spark an interest in a career path they had not previously thought about. He went on to encourage businesses to support young people and to consider offering apprenticeships as a way of teaching the next generation. I sat at a table with a suitably broad range of ages, some being teenagers with the energy and

enthusiasm of youth on their side and others, myself included, with a tinge of grey beginning to highlight the wisdom of our years. These talented young people present shows on Eden FM Radio and coordinate the new Sports and Events Guide, and really represent home grown talent that has been nurtured in recent years. Their professionalism is superb, their knowledge is outstanding and their determination shines through in all they do. Who wouldn’t want that kind of energy in their enterprise – voluntary or commercial? I was talking with some young people last week, yes I do mean face to face not via social media, and their thoughts about prospects was such a mixed bag, and it wasn’t led by ability. Even the straight A students were concerned about the future, some said that the lack of part time/weekend work on their CVs was affecting them in applying to university or employment. As well as they do academically, many were being passed over because they weren’t seen to have sufficient life skills. Here’s a suggestion, if you don’t have the need for a permanent Saturday person, why not offer one day a month jobs or for an hour after school a couple of times a week to final year students? That way they gain valuable experience and you gain a very willing extra pair of hands, reveal their hidden talents and highlight to you potential development within the business. Young people are great, don’t just take my word for it.......

Hi I am Matthew Rudhall and I am currently on my work experience at Eden FM Radio whilst studying my A levels at Ullswater Community College. I am studying Music, Media, Psychology and Business, and I thought that coming to Eden FM would be good support for my Media and Music A level. During this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work experience I will be given the chance to do a little bit of everything at Eden FM such as writing an article for The Local Post and I will be able to do a half an hour show on Friday afternoon where I will be able to play some of the music that I like and talk a little to you (I hope you enjoy that) but I will just have a fun half hour with you and I hope you enjoy it.

Doing this sort of thing is a little out of my comfort zone but I am looking forward to it because it will be a good confidence boost and I am looking forward to meeting and working with everyone at Eden FM. I would never of thought that I would be doing work experience at a radio station let alone doing a show during the week because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of those things that has never occurred to me as something that I would get the chance to do, so I am very happy and excited by the fact that I am getting the chance to do this. I think that coming to Eden FM for my weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work experience is one of the best choices that I have made in my Sixth Form year because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that is really interesting and fun to do.

Being able to play the music that I like on the radio is something that I am really looking forward to doing because no one really plays the music that I listen to

because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit different but I know a lot of people my age who are after a station to play alternative/ rock songs, so I am happy that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m getting the chance to work at Eden FM and do my own half an hour show. The sort of music that I listen to ranges from metal to punk to rock and any sort of alternative music but I will play pop-punk/rock songs because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to blast your ears out with some of the screamo music that I listen to, because it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just be my friends listening to the radio when Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m on so I will make sure that you have an easy listening experience as well. All in all I am looking forward to the week ahead of me because I am sure that I will have a fun time and it will be valuable work experience because as I said I will be getting to look at or do a bit of everything.

WHY VOTE FOR A TOWN COUNCIL? As you come to read this those of you living in Penrith should have received your postal ballot for the vote on whether or not we should have a town council. A good number of you (like myself!) will have already crossed the box and had your say. To those who have I want to say thank you, whichever way you voted, because engaging with you and debating this most important of town issues has been and is a great privilege. What could be more rewarding than coming together as neighbours and deciding what we want for our community? To those of you yet to make your decision let me address a few of the concerns I have heard from the people I have spoken to. It’s an unnecessary rung on the ladder of bureaucracy. No, not at all. For Penrith there is a rung that should be there but is in fact missing. From Askham to Ainstable, Warcop to Winton most villages in Eden have their own parish meetings just like Appleby and further afield Cockermouth, Kendal and Windermere have their own town councils. Each represents an important link between the community and local government. This is not bureaucracy, it is an important, indeed vital, element of democracy that we should have access to local representatives who can communicate with us and for us. Penrith is deprived by not having an elected body tasked solely with representing us, disadvantaged by the chasm between the people and the district level of government that doesn’t exist elsewhere. Eden District Council represents us just fine. CumbrianLocal

The Councillors at district level are indeed fine representatives but the priorities of Eden are not always those of Penrith and with no independent voice for Penrith our interests, our opinions about our community cannot be given the weight they deserve. Now think on a year or two from now when the county and district councils merge into unitary authorities. It is likely to happen and why not? Fewer staff, merged services, in more centralised offices means a more efficient operation that will lead to savings and better government. But while your taxes may go further your voice will not, the gulf between the people and their representatives will never have been greater and a town council will suddenly become imperative and alas, all too late. But what about the cost? All government comes with cost, all services too. We as a community have to decide whether the value of something is worth the cost. For a Band D property the added cost to your Council Tax will be about 40 pence per household per week, for the much more numerous Band B it will be 30 pence each week. You can’t buy a stamp for that but it can secure our town’s future. It is true that if the community want the council to provide more services then there will be more cost but that is the beauty and value of a town council! The people of Penrith making the decisions for the benefit of Penrith. And so I commend to you my hope that we take this opportunity, while we can, to create the forum through which we can answer the question: Who speaks for Penrith? With the answer: We do! as hundreds of figures made from a mass of negleted slates are randomly placed. No-one knows who builds them or why, aparently they get cleared away from time to time only to re-appear shortly afterwards. The summit, a short walk out of the quarry is circular in plan, about sixty yards in diameter and a perfect natural stronghold. It is said a fort once occupied this area and can still be seen in places.

Castle Crag stands in the middle of Borrowdale Valley about four miles south of Keswick. If a visitor to Lakeland has only two or three hours to spare, poor fellow, yet desperately wants to reach a summit and take back an enduring memory of the beauty and atmosphere of the district, let he or she climb Castle Crag. Parking up in the small village of Grange can be difficult, so you need to get lucky. Take the narrow road left opposite the church and continue passing various campsites until you reach the river Derwent, take the path branching away from the river and head up towards the foot of Castle Crag. Here the path either goes immediately up the Crag or continues up and along Borrowdale, from here to the summit is very steep but not too far.

The view from here to the north looks down the full length of Derwent Water, beyond is Keswick with Skiddaw behind. To the south shows a beautiful flatland of about one square mile surrounded by low crags, with the road leading through Rossthwaite and on towards Seathwaite. Heading back by the same way to the foot of Castle crag, one can take the path left which can lead directly around the crag to enjoy a riverside walk back to Grange. This walk is about three miles long, or longer if you go around the Crag, and will take as long as you want.

Alison O’Neill to deliver the 2014 Wainwright Memorial Lecture

She was forced to diversify and started guided walks across the fells, using the title ‘The Barefoot Shepherdess’. She developed such a good reputation that she found herself working across the Dales and Lakes. She then started giving talks about her life and lifestyle which again subsidised her income from the farm. Latterly, Alison has been promoting her own designs of tweed clothing. Her long¬ term aim is to create tweed out of the wool from her own Kendal rough fell sheep, of which she has a flock of around 150.

Alison O’Neill, ‘The Barefoot Shepherdess’ will deliver the 2014 Wainwright Memorial Lecture. The Memorial Lecture is to be held at Rheged, Penrith on Saturday 25th October 2014 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the event are available direct from Rheged (01768 868000) and cost £12 each. (Wainwright Society members £8) Alison O’Neill lives and works on a farm in the foothills of The Howgills, above the market town of Sedbergh. Like Wainwright, Alison O’Neill is a committed advocate of the unique Howgills landscape where she lives and works as a farmer, shepherdess, walking guide and writer. ‘I believe in working with the landscape and not against it. If I don’t look after

it, the landscape won’t look after me.’ After an idyllic childhood running wild and barefoot on the hills, Alison left home as a teenager and travelled around Europe working in a number of big cities. Returning to Sedbergh in her early 30s she was horrified to find that the lifestyle she knew and loved was dying, with small farms being sold off to larger operators so she vowed to find her own farm and despite her lack of experience as a farmer, leased Shacklabank. She invested in a herd of beef cattle just before the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001, which were going to be her main breadwinner; instead they nearly bankrupted her.

Her farm is managed on sound ecological principles. Much of the wildlife that left the surrounding areas has returned, from otters and local roe deer to butterflies and dragon flies.
