A Family Fusion with a sense of scent-ability

2 • EdenLocal

It’s not a new book or a film, but it’s what’s behind the window. You’ll find a pick and mix of a different kind and some great ideas ‘not just for’ Christmas but for all seasons and moods for 2017.

Working with small businesses and local entrepreneurs makes me feel right at home, no limits on ideas and lift off before you know it! If the Eden Local and Eden FM can help these independent businesses get off the ground and permanently into orbit, it’s a good feeling all year round. Set up as a small family business, the Clarke family team, mum (Jane), dad (Stephen) and daughter (Laura) set out in April 2016. Dad Stephen manages the E-Ciggy shop where Clarke’s Fusions is based at 29 Middlegate, opposite Toymaster. Like many families in the area, many of us have more than one job. There are no exceptions here as Jane works full time as a care

home manager and Laura works full time as a dental nurse. Jane and Laura often participate in local fairs and Laura operates their social media platforms (mum and dad aren’t quite up to speed with social media :-) ). The website is up and running www.clarkesfusions. co.uk as well as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As Laura explained ‘we started selling simply scented wax melts and sizzlers as a friend helped us find some amazing natural soy wax melts as a healthy alternative to sprays and melts that we were already using without thinking about the products. We fell in love with them and it grew from there. We now sell the Simply Scented candles and room sprays too. All of their amazing products are hand poured and packed in North Yorkshire. All ingredients are sourced in the UK and are pet and vegan friendly which is a great plus and essentially free of parafins! We also stock the oil burners to work with them’.

great for sensitive skin. SLS is an ingredient in most soaps, shampoos and toothpastes which can be an irritant to some people. All vegan friendly (except the vanilla or choc orange bomb as they contain milk traces), very gentle, with cosmetic fragrance oils made in England and essential oils, bath bombs have skin softening qualities with shea butter or sweet almond oil. Clarke’s Fusions bath products completely dissolve in the bath and disperse an amazing fragrance and colour for an amazing relaxing treat! Not just a business, Laura went on

to say ‘we also work with two local small businesses to stock and sell their personalised candles and crafts. Thanks to Sue, we have personalised crafts and baby hampers with Katherine, both based in Carlisle. Whilst in Spain on a family holiday, whilst they didn’t take their work away, they certainly came back with some amazing hand finished decorative candles including chess pieces, flowers, Buddhas and more. The Clarke family and friends that are Clarkes Fusions are truly passionate about their products and source to the highest standards for you. Yes, from the odd clip on social media you’ll see they use all these products in their home and are confident you will love them too! Hampers and gift sets selected for you, a favourite flavour and scent that suits your mood and mum’s or dad’s. Affordable and unique self-selection options or made to order sets within your budget. your Eden Local Are you excited it’s almost there? Before we go into having a great C*******s, let’s hang on for a moment. Here in Cumbria and other areas of the UK, many of our friends, family and work colleagues are reflecting on 2016 and the December floods of 2015. Still discussed at length are the problems faced in that week and the months that followed which for some is not over. The strength that came from it throughout the County as a community was overwhelming. Yes there are still people not in their homes over a year on, some will never return and the talk of flood resilience continues. Will it happen again continues to be a debate? On Eden FM, when I host the Communication in the Community show every Tuesday from 2 to 4 with representatives from Eden District Council; officers, councillors and associated groups and businesses working with EDC, we spread the word of what EDC actually does in the community that is Eden and how it supports its community. What the programme continues to outline are the services which it has little or no control over that are services provided by the County Council or Parish Councils. Even with press releases, postings on social media and the use of all possible outlets of media including of course Eden FM, did you know the Property Flood Resilience Grants available from Eden District Council, whilst many have applied, according to EDC records many have not who have been affected by floods. On 26th October the deadline extended to apply for £5,000 Property Flood Resilience Grants. So I asked Barry

Cooper, Communications Officer for Eden District Council for a quick update:‘People whose homes or businesses were affected by last December’s floods still have up until 31 March 2017 to apply for a £5,000 Property Flood Resilience Grant. Property Flood Resilience Grants of up to £5,000 are available to homeowners and businesses that were flooded over 3-11 December 2015 and 2428 December 2015 to help fund additional flood resilience or resistance measures for homes and businesses. The end date for applications for both residential and business property applications was previously the end of December 2016. The deadline for works to be completed has also been extended until 30 June 2017. For more information about the £5,000 Property Flood Resilience Grant visit www.eden.gov.uk/ environment/floods/household-flood-resiliencegrant-scheme/ or call Eden District Council on 01768 817817.’ In simple terms, if you know someone living near you who currently isn’t at their home due to flood damage, please make them aware of the grant. As a district, the people of the Eden Valley are some of the most community driven people I have ever met, so this opening editorial may be a bit different from the norm. It includes icebergs and I’m not relating to lettuce! Refreshing ones memory on local people achievements these past few years is what follows here and on pages 6, 12 and 13 is a bit of a summary of what I have researched and found; a quick re-cap on the mess that is the 563 bus service and the action being taken on the threat to the closure of hospital services in Alston and other things. What comes next? What needs to be done? What is happening in the three Tiers of local government about these issues? Will it actually be resolved by the people and not the politics? In my experience I have always maintained as the editor of this publication there are people that represent the people in the

EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

parishes that they represent and there are some that just talk a good story for the votes. The truth of it is, these last five years there have been so many problems hitting the local councils and the people in the parishes; so many disasters, threats of cuts and closures, it is never going to be an easy task to solve amidst the bombardment taking place. In 2011 many people came forward in Penrith and the surrounding areas to sign a petition and marched through the streets of Penrith to save the Alhambra Cinema from closure. A point scored to the people. At the end of 2013 a petition was launched to trigger a Referendum for Penrith to have its own Town Council which as we know was a ‘yes’ vote 2 – 1 in favour in July 2014. Another point scored to the people. In November 2014 Cumbria County Council withdrew bus service subsidies. Grand Prix Services had been operating the 563 bus service on a commercial basis. At the time the bus that ran between Kirkby Stephen and Penrith made five journeys per day, providing a vital lifeline for residents of Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Warcop, Sandford, Appleby, Kirkby Thore, Long Marton and Temple Sowerby to get to work, do their shopping and access services. In the back of mind I do still ask the question that if people don’t have to catch, the bus are they really bothered about bus services? If the people making the cuts had to catch a bus, would it actually happen? I cannot imagine what the stress levels of the people are like that rely on this bus as their only transport. Surely a bus service is a service, not a money making scheme. It’s an essential need in preventing rural isolation, protecting jobs, helping fill jobs and helps create opportunities. A street light has to be on; whether we stand under it each night to make full use of it isn’t the point. Routes like the 563 serve hundreds of people, living in and visiting the area. Some don’t use it every day but that’s not an excuse to take it away! By 2015 usage had fallen by 12% on the 563, forcing the operator to implement a fare increase

What is Christmas to you? By Lee Quinn

An expense, a worry, a concern, a pressure or a time of hope, reward, achievement and time out? Wherever we are and our life takes us, Christmas can be all of the above. Aims to please, provide and deliver happiness however small, in large packages with ribbons, in words with a card or a simple phone call because in making someone or even something happy, it will bring out the joy that is Christmas. Big names will spend millions of pounds in trying to capture your heart at Christmas with ‘the Christmas advert’ image. If it was something as simple as a match stick drawing, which means the most to you?

device wasn’t compatible. We can’t get away from the Christmas coming earlier every year, it beats arriving in September, reduced by December in a sale and poor old Guy Fawkes might be wearing red soon! I’ve never seen so many Christmas lights up in November as I did this year. Call me old fashioned but long before I knew what turkey tasted like, ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ by Slade was written, X boxes were in and a must have was i-phones 3…4…5…6 or 7; whatever the next one was or is, things were very simple. In my early days TV was simple. Two channels - BBC and ITV. As a child up late, the news on our black and white telly would finish and if you didn’t turn it off someone at the other end did, with the screen vanishing to a small dot. Snow was white then, no hints of blue; everything was in shades

We change, our families and sometimes our surroundings change. Some things happen out of our control and some we can’t prevent or be a part of. of grey long before the book! It was just a type of colour. It was carols, Christmas Nativity plays and a celebration of the birth of Christ. If I had a Christmas note to express it, it would be ‘Don’t let the future spoil the past’. When I researched the birth of Christ for this short article, it would seem that the future puts a question mark on the date and there is some query as to whether it was winter as the shepherds watching their flock would have been inside in winter and the sheep would not have been out with them on the hills. Maybe not in the UK, but after checking winter in Nazareth, the winter season is around the same time as the UK. Israel is sometimes described as having two seasons, Winter and Summer and with some winter temperatures in that region being as low as 4 °C and as high as 24 °C, we can over analyse.

Is your plan for a better life in 2017 Over the last few years I have been focusing on how Butterworths, a local solicitors, it’s roots firmly in Cumbria with two offices in Carlisle, one in Penrith, Hebden Bridge (West Yorkshire) and Gateshead (Tyne and Wear) deliver so many services across the North of England at a local and personal level, regardless of the individual or business circumstances. They are an approachable practice not hiding behind a desk, but one engaged with the people in the community. Whilst we are feeling seasonal, the proof is in the pudding on this one! With an historic and developing portfolio of cases won in claims against the banks and practical advice and helpful solutions for the farming community and land owners it has been a positive year for Butterworths. It emphasises the determination and strength in the team to challenge what is right and what is wrong. The end of 2016 is only weeks away, so is 2017 going to be your year for your family and your business? Sometimes our day, our week or even our year doesn’t go to plan. Butterworths are your local solicitor, just a phone call away or a click to a link on your computer or mobile. To get what is owed to you whether this be PPI or a Delayed Flight Claims, its free to find out along with the advice at www.butterworths-solicitors.co.uk/

services-for-you/consumer-claims or call 01228 739907. Of course things can go wrong, but some things can be prevented. Butterworths can help you plan a lot for your future, your family’s future and your business. They can help you with planning for some of the unexpected. Whatever the future holds, they’ll help you plan now. For wills, estate planning and probate, click on this link http:// www.butterworths-solicitors.co.uk/ services-for-you/wills-planningprobate or call 01768 868989. Now many of you over the years will have seen the ‘no win no fee’ advertising for personal injury claims, dealing with not just the matter of the accident that may

have changed your life, or the life of someone close to you, a friend even a colleague at work. Dealing with this type of claim in simple terms is about getting the person back to how they were before the accident, in essence, giving them their life back. This could be you. It is a very personal matter. If needs be a home visit after a chat over the phone can be arranged. They can’t change what happened but at Butterworths they can change what happens next, so call 01228 593939 or follow this link www. butterworths-solicitors.co.uk/ services-for-you/personal-injuryand-medical-negligence Make that call in 2017 for a better year with Butterworths.

I don’t think that the shepherds had an I-phone on that night for checking the weather via wifi, 4G or satellite! As families, we celebrate tradition, we use technology to reach those that we can’t be with and we look at photos to remember those that are not here in body but have never left our hearts. As a family, we still laugh at the photo, taken on a kodak instamatic 124 camera, of their dad (me) in his smock ready for midnight mass as a choir boy and other photos of Christmas past of mum and dad, grandparents and luckily for them their great grandparents and great great grandparents. And of course, nan still remembers the first taste she had as a young girl of a Port and Lemon. You may have a great

grandpa or granddad who can tell you what a ‘party seven’ is and an auntie who can tell you what a ‘snowball’ was. You may be just on your way to rediscovering an age of Christmas of a different kind. Games for Christmas like Battling Tops, Mouse Trap, Sindy Dolls and Action men, which lasted through Christmas day and Boxing day and many years to come. Christmas is about you and hopefully those around you or a phone call away. Make those calls if you can make someone happy. Share as much of it as you can and make it special in every way you can. To finish off before we pull out the ‘Now that’s what I call Christmas 2016’ remixes, I will be ‘flipping the wax with some vinyl on Christmas Eve. There may be some chestnuts

As it has been written, Noddy Holder worked through the night at his mother’s house in Walsall to write the lyrics, which he completed in one draft. In an interview with the Daily Mail in 2007 he spoke about the song’s creation: ‘We’d decided to write a Christmas song and I wanted to make it reflect a British family Christmas. Economically, the country was up the creek. The miners had been on strike, along with the grave-diggers, the bakers and almost everybody else. I think people wanted something to cheer them up – and so did I. That’s why I came up with the line ‘Look to the future now, it’s only just begun’. Once I got the line, ‘Does your Granny always tell you that the old ones are the best’, I knew I’d got a right cracker on my hands So here it is Merry Christmas……………

of 10% from April 2015. This instigated a call to ‘use it or lose’ which was a term used, but I’m not writing this article to name and shame with a reference to its origin. In the film ‘Titanic’, I suppose this was the iceberg warning? There are enough agendas and meeting notes over the last two years that echo statements like “We really have to find a way to better support this bus service as it would be devastating for Kirkby Stephen if it were lost. Grand Prix Services are delivering a great service to parishes along the route of the 563 bus route as it’s vital we get behind them and use the service to keep it running.” In the minutes of the Meeting of Kirkby Stephen Town Council on Tuesday 1st November 2016 at 6.45pm listed as item 505 - 563 Service KS, Brough, Appleby – Penrith the following was stated:- “It was reported that several people are working on different solutions to the threat of losing the 563 service and it was felt that this would benefit from being pulled together if possible. Cllr GL reported that she has received a report from John Carey for a proposed replacement service which could be administered through the Upper Eden CIC, she agreed to forward the paper to L Bateman, Cllr M Walker and Ann Sandell. RESOLVED to contact A Connell at Appleby to seek an update on his progress to secure the future of the current 563 service. It was noted that the loss of the bus service would have an impact on the ability of the town to meet the criteria to be a key service centre and this would, in turn, impact on the Eden Local Plan.” Meanwhile, live from Appleby in the People in the Parish show on Eden FM 8th November, Eden District Councillors Andy Connell and Karen Greenwood were both on the case for an hour on air explaining the challenge ahead. Since that date, a friends of the 563 group is now being formed and working towards a constitution, with a crucial meeting scheduled for Friday 9th

December. As it stands, the 563 service stops on 16th December 2016, leaving people stranded at a crucial time of the year, having to make their own arrangements to get to work, carry out every day or weekly tasks with no transport. For those not using a bus, it’s a bit like taking your car away from you, with the thought that maybe you might have it back. The group are hoping and working towards getting the service up and running by 3rd January and on a positive note on the day of print for the Eden Local, it is the morning after the 6th December 2016 Kirkby Stephen Town Council Meeting listed on the agenda as item A7 563 Service KS, Brough, Appleby – Penrith the action - To receive an update on the future of the service and to consider financially supporting the service. Following on from conversations with the Town Clerk, I can confirm that some positive decision are being made which highlights a lot of real links and determination across the parishes that line the 563 route, so I for one am looking forward to 3rd January with hope. Meanwhile, with some heavy snow falls on the North Pennines, the roads to Alston linking it with Penrith and Carlisle have not been open on certain days, it raises even more concerns about should Alston Community Hospital have its proposed cuts as many people’s lives could be put in danger. Eden FM likes working with Appleby and Alston and is hoping to have teams in both towns so regular communications every week can be established and local news circulated across the parishes via 107.5 FM and online. Currently the ‘Success Regime’ proposes to close all in¬patient beds in Alston Community Hospital (Ruth Lancaster James Hospital) as part of a wider plan to change NHS services in the North, West and East Cumbria. Alston Community Hospital needs your support now. Did you know that the beds in Alston are used by people in and around Alston as far as

Penrith and Carlisle and other areas. The loss of beds, should it happen would affect you! You might not need it today, but that shouldn't be a reason to take it away!!! Can you help? Please send a letter to Freepost CUMBRIA NHS CONSULTATION to tell the NHS what you think about their plan to change NHS services in this area. It can be as short or long as you like. Please post by the day of the poll (15th December). Alston Moor Parish Council has called a community vote about the plan to close all in¬patient beds at Alston Community Hospital; this will mean closing the minor injuries unit too. On Thursday 15th December the vote takes place via one polling station at Samuel Kings School. This poll asks whether you agree with this plan (and believe it offers adequately safe healthcare). The people in the parish of Alston have been appealing for support across the district. You can support by signing this petition http:// www.thepetitionsite.com/engb/431/491/259/our-lives-areunder-threat-save-alston-cottagehospital-beds Next the results will be in for the 563 and for the vote by the people of Alston. You’ll hear them first on Eden FM 107.5. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas. Your January Eden Local will be out around 7th January with updates and more crucial communication across the parishes of Eden.

Cumbria Oak believe that service is key when providing furniture to their customers. Over the past 7 years Cumbria Oak’s delivery team has consisted of 2 people on each of their delivery vans. The delivery team picks the item from their vast warehouse, then delivers it directly to the customers home. We use no middle men and our team is friendly and polite Graham tells me. Once at the destination the team unpacks all items, places them in the room of choice and constructs items if necessary. I asked Graham why they construct items on site and not at the factory? He tells me

that some items are just too heavy or awkward to get around corners or upstairs. Wardrobes and beds are particularly difficult as you can imagine, so we bring each each in several pieces and make them on site.

Cumbria Oak are open 7 days a week, and it’s not too late to get furniture delivered in time for Christmas.

At this time of year we sell many dining tables ready for the Christmas meal. Tables can also be very large so we are happy to attach the legs once in the home, the delivery team then turns the table over, checks it, and the customer is also shown how it works should it be an extending table.

17 to 25!

The traps of addiction, changes in laws and society’s way of acting in our generations by Emily Quinn In last month’s issue, I focused on the positives and negatives of social media and its influence on us all. This month, I thought a good follow up would be talking about the invisible traps we are constantly falling into and the changes in laws and attitudes in my generation. The concept of “invisible traps” might not make much sense immediately, but people my age will understand exactly what I mean. It’s a bit like when your parents tell you to “stop being the victim”; when you think you’re the victim, you think you are falling into these invisible traps and keep slipping up and getting picked on. It’s part of the trial and error learning theory. If you’re a parent or a grandparent (and human), you’ll know we make mistakes, and every 50th time it’s okay to try and help us with those mistakes, but let’s face it, we’re forever making them! This to us is falling into a trap. We don’t mean to make so many slip ups. It’s us learning! When we are born, we have no knowledge or understanding of anything and even until the day we die we are learning stuff. Being a teenager, we make the most mistakes. It’s that age in our lives where we are making that transition to adulthood and we can’t do that without knowing that some things we just can’t do because they are wrong; but we might not necessarily know this until we’ve made the mistake. Regarding changes in laws, that is a subject I can only begin to cover because if I get into politics I will probably become EXTREMELY frustrated. Let’s face it, the stress of politics this year has been blood boiling, so I’m going to stick to talking about some of the changing laws and then pressures that arise because of them. For example, to have sex the law states that you must be 16 and to smoke or have cannabis in your possession is illegal and although you must be 18 to buy or sell tobacco, smoking is what we would class as a social norm. The police have the right to confiscate cigarettes from anybody under the age of 18, but because it now happens so much, it’s hard to maintain control over it.

rebellious generation because of the rise in illegal conformity in things such as smoking and drug abuse. It would appear that many young people between the ages of 16 and 25 have tried cannabis and most have been in the company of someone whilst they were smoking it. Common places are of course parties and socials and speaking to my friends, university is a common place where they are introduced to this drug and almost pressured into trying it.

Our generation is sometimes described as the

The problem with laws is they’re easily defied and

people can often get round them too easily. I personally think there should be greater awareness in schools on the purpose of laws. Another example is the amount of 16 year olds having babies. Surely if they’re having children at 16, in some circumstances, the law is being breached. This is, however, another social norm. It’s a horrific fact, but sex doesn’t mean what it used to mean for a lot of people, much like smoking and drug abuse. People often do these things not because they want to, but because it’s seen as the “thing to do”. This can be linked to the attitudes people now take towards decisions and problems that we come across in our generation. What may seem inappropriate to the older generation is completely normal to us and we don’t mean to offend or outrage, it’s just what we’re used to now. Admittedly, some people’s attitudes, language and appearance is unacceptable but that’s not all of us. A good example of what I’m talking about is make up and fashion for girls. Being a girl myself, it’s obviously easier to talk about girls conforming rather than lads; sorry guys! This is a conversation I regularly have with my friends; make-up and the fact that we are literally forced to wear it. If you don’t wear make-up, people genuinely ask questions. On a couple of occasions people have asked me if I’m ill because I’m not wearing make-up and I was honestly gobsmacked. I think society’s expectations are abominable. But those of you who know me, know that it’s a very bad idea for me to start talking about my views of society, so I’m not going to go there! Next month will feature society. There are a million things to say about it and I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to present my arguments yet. It looks like I’m going to have a lot of planning to do for it. The positives and negatives of society are so extreme and there are just so many of them. I look forward to writing again next month…..

Old Roads of Eastern Lakeland his introduction he explained that many of the old tracks and byways had been adopted by modern walkers but that some had been damaged ‘by the tread of too many impatient boots not content to follow the original well-graded curves and zigzags but instead carve the ground into ribbons of scree by short cuts and beelines.’ Epilogue p. iv. It was a constant refrain that paths were damaged by inconsiderate walkers and looking at some of these paths today, one cannot help but agree.

Ancient roads and trackways fascinated Alfred Wainwright and he loved to trace these long-forgotten routes on the ground during his exploration of the Lake District. On his very first visit in 1930, his imagination had been fired by the words ‘High Street Roman Road’ marked on his map and, with his cousin, followed the route along the High Street ridge on the first full day of their holiday. In his late seventies, he wrote a short book about the old roads of Eastern Lakeland. It was his last handwritten book as his eyesight was failing. In

In this little book Wainwright hoped to make a record of the old roads and tracks before it was too late. He wrote: ‘Walkers who are blessed with imaginative minds and a knowledge of history will especially enjoy travelling these ancient ways. They will tread in the steps of men long forgotten: traders, cattle drovers, miners, tinkers and pedlars who journeyed on foot over rough ground in all weathers, not for pleasure for there was little pleasure in travel in those far-off days; and will appreciate the sufferings of these early pioneers as they toiled across uncharted and shelterless fells. They were the first fellwalkers.’ Epilogue p. vii

walks with maps and sketches and includes Wainwright’s first walk in 1930 following the Roman Road over High Street, the Corpse Road from Mardale Green (Haweswater) to Shap, the quarry road from Swindale to Mosedale Quarry and the pack horse trails and trading routes making use of the passes of Garburn, Nan Bield and Gatesgarth. The book was one of the last of Wainwright’s books to be published by the Westmorland Gazette in 1985 and, today, copies can still be found for sale on the internet. It is a book that deserves to be better-known and by completing the walks not only will the reader be preserving these ancient ways but also will be following in the steps of Alfred Wainwright. Light in Dark Places Towns, villages, shops and businesses and scattered farmhouses are gradually (as I write) beginning to look more festive; windows and trees carrying extra signs of light, carols and nativity stories with what seems like endless creative re-inventing (my season’s favourite is The Three Wise Camels!) are being rehearsed in schools, choirs, music groups and various community groups. It’s nearly here and of course will soon be all over for another year. At the same time there is an almost endless stream of requests for money from a huge range of charities working in our own communities, across the county, country and of course the whole world. Almost every day the post brings another plastic-sealed package with a heart moving picture and accompanying story. Even with my best reserves of ‘seasonal good-will’ it is hard not to feel overwhelmed by so much darkness and obvious need in the world and the endless pull on our consciences to be more and more generous. However, I was reminded this week* that each of these appeals also represents something to celebrate in the human capacity to respond to the needs of others and to try and make a difference. Every year in the UK charities turn over £44 billion, 27% of our population is involved in some sort of charitable or volunteering work in over 166,000 different organisations. That is remarkable! This human response to human (and other) needs is deeply rooted in our history; it was the driving force behind the establishment of our schools, hospitals, hospices and social housing programmes; it led to changes in prisons, childlabour, the abolition of slavery and the formation of Trade Unions. Although much of this work has rightly become the responsibility of central and local government, the energy to respond selflessly to the needs of others is still alive and well. ‘Children in need’ is testimony to this continuing spirit.

EdenLocal

So, I won’t become cynical or depressed by all the requests for help, but instead try to be generous where I can but also see each one as testimony to the thousands of people who want to make a real difference and, through their commitment to do what they can by simple actions, continue to embody the great Christmas message that ‘the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it.’ (John 1). Indeed, this is the heart of the story – God crept in beside us, shared our humanity and continues to make the most remarkable difference in everyday lives, through everyday people. AWARD WINNING TEAM By Lee Quinn

For quite a few years now the Eden Local in summer gets dropped at visitor destinations, whilst the publication has a growing number of readers online in Cumbria, in the UK and worldwide. The Top Trumps Cumbria project has brought both Eden Local and Eden FM closer to businesses that are not always seen as ones used by the locals. The Eden Local publication has been dropped in to Hillcroft Park throughout peak holiday times and to other holiday destinations, increasing its distribution from the Easter Bank holiday. As a holiday park, Hillcroft Park provides a serene environment in which you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Lake District. Set just outside Pooley Bridge, they cater for motorhomes, tourers and campers including pods with lodges and holiday homes for hire and sale. Hillcroft Park is pet friendly and is in an exceptional location for those EdenLocal

exploring the many other attractions that Cumbria has to offer. The team cares passionately about Hillcroft Park and the quality of your time during your stay with them. It was over a month ago that Hillcroft Park contacted me with a keen interest in taking a delivery of the Top Trumps first, second and third issues, but within 24 hours they didn’t just want to stock the cards, they wanted to be part of the project.

Change the scene in 2017 with Heritage Print Driveways

As part of being the sponsor for the Ullswater card, Hillcroft Park will be a stockist but also now be featured with all promotional activity of the Top Trumps Cumbria project along with other businesses, local organisations and groups until one month after all three sets are released which commences in the Spring. It’s great news for the Top Trumps Cumbria project, but at around the same time, Hillcroft Park was crowned the best ‘Small Relax and Explore’ destination in the North of England at the Hoseasons 11th annual Gala Awards evening in Birmingham. Scooping a Diamond award, presented by Simon Altham, Managing Director of Hoseasons who hosted the event, showcasing the best of self-catering specialist lodges and holiday parks across the United Kingdom. BAH! HUMBUG! By Nigel Peacock, Eden FM

Eden FM has an extensive music library and we have a special category entitled ‘Xmas Music’. I’ve just looked through the list and there are 323 Christmas songs, carols and instrumentals. It would take Eden FM the best part of 24 hours to play them all.

Christmas seems to start earlier each year, witnessed by cards appearing in the shops in early September. There is a danger of you becoming really bored with Christmas preparations and that can certainly be the case with Christmas music. It is, of course, good to hear the dulcet tones of Bing Crosby with White Christmas, the likes of Greg Lake with I Believe in Father Christmas and the gang from Band Aid - just not all the time. When you are out in the next few days, listen to the non-stop Christmas music in some shops, and look at the faces of the poor hard done by staff. They have had to put up with it for weeks now, generally following orders from corporate headquarters, where you can guarantee, the office staff there don’t have to listen to it eight hours a day. EdenLocal

INTRODUCING MIRANDA Now, that brings up a certain temptation. Should we dedicate the whole of December 25 to Christmas music? After all, we have enough to play each one in turn and not repeat an individual song all day. We could instruct our friendly computer, affectionately known to us all as Miranda, to simply go wild and select all

Christmas music and let all the humans take the day off. Playing Christmas music all day sounds delightful, but after an hour or so, it would just become a little tedious. After all, how many versions of White Christmas could you stand hearing? A solution, is to scatter Christmas songs across the day during December in the run up to the big day. Here is another decision to be made. How many songs are appropriate in a day? Which ones should be played and which ignored? The most important question, is when to start playing Christmas music. If we had taken our lead from the shops, then we should

have started playing Christmas music back in early September. If we had done that, then you would have stopped listening to Eden FM weeks ago.

THE CHRISTMAS ELVES The solution was taken out of our hands in early November, when a notice appeared in the Eden FM studio. The notice, attractively presented on pink paper, advised that no Christmas music was to be played until December 12. The note was signed by the rather mysterious, and some suggest creepy, Christmas Elves.

Eden

What will this date bring? Will you hear an outpouring of Christmas music 24/7 up to Twelfth Night? Mercifully, no. Eden FM presenters will bring you one or two, but no more than two, Christmas songs each hour up to Christmas Eve. The freedom given to the Eden FM team, means that your favourite presenters can make their own choice of Christmas music, after all, Miranda’s hard-drive has 323 to choose from. Which brings us to the day itself. Several presenters have selflessly volunteered to be separated from their screaming offspring for an hour or two on Christmas Day, to broadcast their version of Christmas cheer on the Eden FM airwaves.

The Christmas Elves, the non-creepy ones, will make sure your music choices and dedications are ready to play. Otherwise, we might have to leave the choice for the day to the computer, Miranda, who, for all we know, might decide that the day is right to start playing Easter Music. And we wouldn’t want that - would we?

Bonnie Blues Update By Karl Collinson

Cup which we’ve been drawn away to Siloth FC in the quarter finals. We picked up an important 3 points with a 2.1 victory over Chester-Le-Street with Bobby Atkinson scoring a great counter attacking goal. The result should have been out of sight but Penrith missed a number of chances to put the game to bed and Chester-Le-Street made it a nervous finish by scoring a late consolation.

The Bonny Blues have enjoyed mixed fortunes throughout November with a number of games being postponed due to the weather.

We travelled to Newcastle Benfield in the 2nd round of the FA Vase and put in one of our best defensive displays and came away with a well deserved 1.0 victory.

head home the winning goal and both him and Tyler Bowman were immense at the heart of the defence. We were drawn at home against a strong Atherton Collieries team who are currently 3rd in the North West Counties Premier League. It was a bit of a dull affair in the 1st half as both teams cancelled each other out but Colls got the decisive 1st goal soon after the restart and grew in confidence and ran out 3.0 winners. It was a positive afternoon off the pitch as a host of youngsters from Penrith AFC Juniors lead both teams onto the pitch and Eden FM broadcasted full live match commentary for the first time. In between the Vase matches we travelled to Whitley Bay and despite playing some of our best football, we went down 2.0. The club welcomed back Robbie Hebson, who’s been playing for Workington, and Dean Rae has also joined the club. We have a host of away matches over the festive period and we’re not back at Frenchfield Park until Saturday 21st January.

What lies ahead in 2017? Coming up in the January Eden Local

Deliveries in 2017 We want to cover more doors and we’ll need more distributors At Eden Local, like any small business, we will continue to post as many free community magazines through doors as we can. Nobody can guarantee 100% delivery and it ceases to amaze me when some leaflets and other free publications say they do. Unless you have actually been out and delivered door to door, negotiated every form of gate and the long, thin, sideways, length ways, spring loaded and crawl on your knees letter boxes, you would not know this. Unless you have actually inserted 30,000 leaflets into a magazine, then posted them, it’s always difficult to imagine. After many years with Neil Hodgson and his family in the fields, the milk shed and shop covering the farming season, Neil has finally retired. A special feature on Neil, Jean and the family is well worth a read.

If there is of course a notice on the letter box that says no junk mail, I’ll knock and ask. People do move on and the stickers don’t always get removed. a worry with low level letter boxes and dogs throwing themselves against the door as you approach it and they are the other side waiting for a finger treat! To the man I met over in Scaws whilst out delivering, who’ll get this issue when he returns home for Christmas, if I don’t see him before he leaves with his, happy to see me, Chocolate Sprocker, I would like to thank him for his compliments and kind words about the Eden Local. I love dogs and I reckon dogs know if they like you. The gentleman explained that his dog doesn’t like postman but he liked me, probably the smell of my own Springer helped! Perhaps there might be a ‘I smell friendly to dogs’ spray for the postie one day? We are always looking to strengthen the distribution and increase the coverage of the Eden Local. Depending on how many hours you can spare per month, you can earn £25 - £250 per month. Every route is different. We like delivery people and teams to be living or based in the locations of delivery. Magazines can be collected from our hub in Penrith or delivered to the distributors. Based on how difficult the routes are, it may be calculated by door or by time, taking in to consideration any mileage if required. Additional leaflet inserts are based on weight which are also additional income to distributors. With the exception of January when the magazine goes out in the first week of the month, for the rest of the year the magazines go out in the second week of the month. We allow 7 to 10 days for distribution, always taking into consideration the safety of the distributors, the weather conditions and daylight hours.
