It’s personal and only one person could write this
From the Cycles to the Cellar by Neil Scott
I left Trinity school in 1985 with no idea of what I wanted to do. I was shepherded towards a YTS (Youth Training Scheme) and found myself behind a counter of a cycle shop in Carlisle for 6 months, which is how long a placement lasted back then. I then moved on to the fish counter in County Store in the Lanes, Carlisle. After about 4 months as a local fishmonger in Carlisle, I was offered a full time job in the old fish market. In 1995, I was offered the chance to purchase my own stall in the Devonshire Arcade, so it was 20 years ago the Fish Cellar was born. It’s a family business. My wife mostly does the accounts but also helps with holiday cover. Dan, my son also helps out when he is off from his other job but really wants to come into the business when the opportunity arises. Mark, the man with the big smile and personality, joined me behind the counter about 15 years ago. With lots of previous knowledge in the industry, Efisio joined us about about 5 years ago. That’s the team! Trade has changed over the years. At the beginning, all you stocked on the counter was what came out of Scotland which was cod, haddock, whiting and plaice. There was no

such thing as farmed salmon. You only saw salmon on the counter from April until September. Things are so different now. Fish can now travel from all over the world, usually within 24 hours, which at times seems easier to do than getting something from the south east. We now, on a regular basis, have over 70 different types of fish and because of amazing cookery programmes, we still get asked for things we may not have in stock. That said, we try to get what people want. I hate being beaten by a customer’s request. Whilst writing this, I’ve just had my local shrimp

fisherman bring me a load of handpicked Silloth shrimps. We always try and buy local fish; wild Solway salmon and sea trout are probably the highlight of the year. This is when I have to switch on my ice machine at home and be prepared to be interrupted at anytime up until 11pm at night, but the rewards far outweigh my half eaten meal or missed TV programme or those late nights waiting after the call. This year was the first time we saw wild sea bass from Barrow-in-Furness. What a superb product these are! I don’t know if you know this, but all fish deteriorates at different

speeds and bass is one that should be eaten as quickly as possible, from it being landed to truly grasp the flavour of this majestic fish. We supply a few quality pubs and restaurants in and around the area who use our products because of the quality we offer. We believe that cheap is often not good. A few years ago we were privileged enough to be asked by Philip Cranston if we would like to take on the fish counter at his newly extended Cranston Food Hall in Penrith. It was a pleasure to say yes and to sell our quality fish alongside their years of experience in the butchery industry. In addition to fish, we also sell game when it is in season. You can count on the Fish cellar counter Now, Neil has put what I think is one of the best opening stories together here. I took the bit out of the last paragraph where he said ‘I’m a bit sick of typing as I’m slow. I’m now going for a couple of cans before bed!’ But he, like a number of businesses, truly are one of kind. Thanks Neil!

Shap Wells Hotel
Well, we’ve made it to the 73rd Cumbrian Local publications and officially we start our 6th year. Thanks to a lot of people out there, readers, writers, photographers and of course businesses, who without their commitment we would not be there. It’s a team I feel more than a business. The final link in it is the delivery teams without whom you would not be reading this. Like them, as I was this month, I’ll be doing the rounds probably getting wet as we enter the worst time of the year for trying to deliver dry magazines. A special thank you to them all. We had about 2 or 3 dry days last November, but December and January weren’t that good. You’ll notice that last month we issued the October/November issue. This was to allow distribution in between the weather and lack of day light hours, especially with poor visibility around some areas. Importantly, every month we start new people and set up new routes, so if you could deliver 50 magazines or 500+ please drop me a line. If you log on to www.cumbrianlocal.co.uk/previous-issues you can view all of the magazines and other publications we have been behind since 2010. These are all free to read on line. Since the last issue, I did take a break for the school holidays and for the first time as a family, we took a week in Seahouses on the Northumberland coast, which I believe, will be the first trip of many. Something that really appealed was something I hadn’t seen in a place I have visited in years. With the exception of a local Co-op, though a small town with a small population of around 2,000, shared with other villages in the area around it an estimated 4,500 population, there were no big brands or franchises, just purely

independent traders, which I thought was nice in itself for a total break. With regards to having little or no reception on my mobile and no internet connections, it was a total break. Can’t wait to get back! It reminded me of the importance of taking time out as a family. As a family business, it doesn’t happen that often. We all contribute in one way or another. We have possibly published over 200 magazines/brochures to date, ranging from the regional magazine that is Cumbrian Local, to producing many seasons of football and rugby match day programmes and other regional magazines. By 2016, our new website will also have these samples available to view. There have been a lot of early mornings, late nights, a lot of walking, weekend working and quite a few sacrifices made. No I haven’t spent 5 years on a farm, but some weeks it just never seems to end. Looking around, a lot has happened over these past 5 years, when 6,000 magazines were posted to areas of Penrith. It has, without any doubt, all been worth it on so many levels, so I’m not having a moan, just really updating new readers that as a business run from home, with many volunteers helping out, we don’t have the luxuries of lots of reporters, a sales team and other staff that you would normally associate with a magazine hitting a distribution of over 19,000 last month, although as mentioned the delivery team is now a key asset of local people developing all the time and there may be as many as 40+ people out there each month. One hundred would be good. In short, it’s been a great 5 years, seeing the Cumbrian Local develop, offering so many opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds. On the sad side of things, but one of great honour is the stories I have written about people who have been pillars of the community, unfortunately no longer with us, but in print forever. The publication has supported around 50 local voluntary groups/charities, presented
to you over 40 local voluntary writers, with the work of over a dozen local photographers. As the Cumbrian Local continues to increase its distribution and readership across the Eden Valley and into Carlisle as a regional magazine, I can’t forget the support immediately around it where the publication has been based in Penrith and where it is still based. From that first November 2010 publication that featured a 4 page pull out promoting the Pride in Penrith lottery, it has continued to support groups in the community, from campaigns towards saving a cinema, setting up a radio station, a town council for Penrith, along with many district and county initiatives. Unfortunately we have seen the closure of so many local businesses, 27 in all that have featured in the publication, some of these due to retirement, some related to the economic environment and other reasons. Leaving you on a high, Cumbrian Local Publications has helped many businesses survive. Those small businesses that need low cost advertising. We have had the pleasure of featuring 105 new businesses in their first steps to getting established and know, as a small magazine, run from my spare room at home in Penrith, I have had the pleasure of working with 252 local businesses. I am pleased to say some of those have not just had a one off campaign and over 50% of them I’m still working with, either on a regular and or frequent basis, subject to their business needs. It’s time for the next 5 years and I will be moving from the spare room for most of the time into a premises where Cumbrian Local will be next door to the Eden FM radio new studios. Whilst we have the keys, please look out for official announcements of the opening, which we hope will be before the year is out. Hammering Home the importance of Power of Attorney By Nicola Broyan
You will recall from our earlier articles that at Butterworths we stress the importance of having a Power of Attorney. Having a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney means that you have named one or more people to make decisions on your behalf if you lack the capacity to make those decisions yourself.
However, difficulties arise if someone loses capacity to make decisions themselves, but has not made a Power of Attorney. What happens in those circumstances? Decisions still need to be made on behalf of that person, but unfortunately, without a Power of Attorney, nobody has the authority to make those decisions. A Court of Protection application is the answer. Someone, perhaps a family member or a professional such as a solicitor, will apply to the Court to be appointed as the Deputy of the person who lacks capacity.
The application to the Court can be complex and time consuming. Information is required about the person who lacks capacity, their financial circumstances and details of why they lack the capacity to manage their own affairs. The Court also requires information about the person applying to become a Deputy, including their own personal financial situation, and a personal statement as to why they should be appointed as a Deputy. Notices have to be served on various people throughout the application process.
Once the Court has made a decision on the appointment of a Deputy, the Court Order needs to be registered with all organisations with whom the person who lack capacity deals. This can range from banks and building societies, to the Department for Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs, to utilities providers and insurance companies. The Court also requires that a Deputy’s Security Bond is put in place. Acting as a Deputy can be daunting. The Deputy is responsible for someone else’s finances and making decisions on their behalf. Sometimes, while acting as a Deputy, situations arise which are not covered by the original Court Order; this could be selling
Nicola Broyan
a property for example. In those circumstances, a further Order would need to be obtained from the Court. On a yearly basis, the Deputy is responsible for lodging accounts showing the money that has been spent and received on behalf of the person who lacks capacity. Depending on the value and nature of the person’s assets, the Deputy may need to seek the expertise of an accountant or independent financial advisor to ensure that they are acting in the best interests of that person. If you are a Deputy, or need to make an application to become a Deputy, call Nicola Broyan now on 01768 868989 for expert, friendly advice.

Happy Wacky Christmas…strange traditions from around the world. by Pamela Waggott
What do you think of when you think of Christmas… the story of the Nativity and snowy midnight church services? Perhaps you think of twinkling lights, candles and Christmas Trees or is Christmas all about watching the Queen’s speech wearing your best Christmas jumper and paper hat, full of turkey, sprouts, and chocolate? Well there are other traditions that are a little more ‘unusual’ from around the world. I thought it may be interesting to share one or two of the stranger ones I have come across. The Krampus is a dark version of St Nicholas (Father Christmas). Krampus preys on the children of Central Europe and on the 5th of December stomps around on his cloven hooves armed with rusty chains and bells seeking out children who have been misbehaving …not magical and enchanting by any means…scary and terrifying more like!
Froehliche Weihnachten - German If that doesn’t suit you then how about hunt the almond in the rice pudding! In Sweden a peeled almond is placed in the traditional pudding made at Christmas and the lucky person who finds it will be married within the year!
God Jul - Swedish In the Ukraine spiders webs are used to decorate Christmas trees. This is based on an old folk tale of a poor family waking on Christmas morning to find their bare tree covered with glistening silver and gold spiders webs.
Prejeme Vam Vesele Vanoce a stastny Novy Rok – Czech
Щасливого Різдва Христового
Similarly in Iceland the Yule Cat – Jólakötturinn – is no more friendly and affectionate than the Krampus. The Jólakötturinn is a huge, angry, monstrous cat who attacks the badly dressed and untidy. He originates from Icelandic medieval farming folklore. During the autumn as wool was being gathered and prepared, those who worked hard were rewarded with new clothes, those who didn’t had to make do with their old and shabby clothing and so made the Yule cat angry who apparently did not like ragged and untidy folk!
In Poland, Christmas Eve is a day of fasting, and then of feasting. The day is spent without eating and then the Wigilia feast begins at the appearance of the first star. The traditional Christmas Eve supper consists of twelve dishes representing the twelve months of the year. There is no red meat served at the meal only fish this is usually carp. The supper, which includes many traditional dishes and desserts, can sometimes last for over two hours or more.
Gleðileg jól - Icelandic
- Ukranian
Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia – Polish
If this all sounds a bit scary then how about a game of hunt the pickle! From Spain to Germany an ornament shaped like a pickle is hidden on the Christmas tree. The first person to find it is rewarded with an extra present on Christmas day. CumbrianLocal

The power and influence of advertising in Japan has resulted in the tradition of eating KFC during Christmas with Christmas cake for dessert becoming common practice…this in a country where less than 1% of the population is estimated to be Christian.
CumbrianLocal •
Kurisumasu Omedeto - Japanese
In Norway there is a superstition that all brooms should be hidden on Christmas Eve. It is believed that witches and evil spirits will rise from the ground and cause mischief and mayhem until dawn so all brushes and brooms are put out of sight!
God Jul - Norwegian Just as well that the same tradition doesn’t exist in Italy where La Befana rides on a broomstick delivering sweets and treats to children on Epiphany Eve (5th January). La Befana is an old witch who flies through the skies and enters houses down the chimney – much like Santa. Children leave her wine and tasty treats instead of the British tradition of a mince pie and a glass of sherry …and of course a carrot for Rudolph!
Buon Natale or Buone Feste Natalizie - Italian In Mexico El Festival de los Rabanos is a colourful and interesting display in the centre of Oaxaca. Nativity scenes, dancers, historical and mythological events and characters are carved from … radishes!
Feliz Navidad – Spanish And as for the Catalonian tradition of El Caganer…well you will have to do your own research…this is a family magazine after all!!
Bon Nadal - Catalan Whatever your family traditions are, and whatever you do to celebrate this time of year, have a great time and perhaps you could carve a brussel sprout or two!

Big Move into Town for Eden FM
Almost in a parallel with the celebration of 5 complete years of Cumbrian Local, Eden FM was launched with its first transmission at 10am on 25th November 2011. Last month’s appeal for more volunteers has proven very successful with over a dozen potential new volunteers making contact with Eden FM. This is all very encouraging, especially with many voluntary groups out there finding themselves stretched and also needing helping, we still find people coming forward, of all ages, from places across Cumbria. As indicated in the opening editorial, some big changes are ahead for Eden FM and Cumbrian Local.

Welcome to ProComp! What do they do? They fix phones, computers, ipads and tablets, tackling technology when it’s broken. Why do they do it? Well that’s a simple answer. From a very young age, proprietor Jacek Szymaniewski has been taking technology apart and putting it back together and now from his shop in Middlegate, Penrith he does this for a living. Every day is different; every job is different. Technology changes and upgrades and it’s not always easy to keep up with it. So when it’s broken, remember ProComp have the right experience, the right tools and it’s there to put it right. Talking to Jacek, we discussed that a lot of people try to fix their phones. The tools for these types of repair mean that even something as simple as a screw driver, which as he explained is so small, that half a millimetre out, if used could really damage a phone. Accidents do happen. Communication at the push of a button or swipe of a screen has become a part of our everyday lives. Rest assured if you’re not insured, ProComp can advise you on the best course of action offering a range of services so you’re not disconnected for too long. If you can’t call, pop in. Subject to the make of the device and the repairs required, they can complete some work the same day, subject to parts and availability. ProComp fix mobile phones, ipads, tablets and computers. As an extra service, ProComp, for a small charge and returnable deposit, can even loan you a phone. Also available in the ProComp shop is a full range of phone covers, cases, other mobile phones and IT essentials.

5 years on at Stoneybeck inn
It was almost 5 years to the day, 22nd November 2010, when I was invited to the Stoneybeck Inn to have a look behind the scenes of a project which was to feature in the December 2010 issue of Eden Local. That project was the upgrade and refurbishment of the whole site. In the main building, two floors for dining and on the lower floor, the traditional bar area and hub with open and quiet places secluded behind Cumbrian stonework, with open fires and cosy lounge sitting. Above the bar dining area was to be the Coniston suite, catering for 40 seated guests with a modern day mural depicting the familiar landscape of the Lakeland mountain range, this

also to be viewed for real through the windows of the suite. Additional rooms at ground level that were added included the Buttermere suite on the north side of the Inn where the Kitchens used to be, catering for 20 seated guests. As you worked your way to the south side of the building, the other side of the main bar area you entered the cloakrooms in a glassed fronted lobby area with French windows, seen from the front of the building. Ahead of me, the Windermere conferencing suite for 20 dining guests or delegates. Then to the left I discovered the huge Ullswater conference banqueting facilities located to

the rear, with its own bar, south facing French windows opening up to a patio area leading to landscaped gardens, which was to cater for 150 seated table guests or 200 conferencing delegates. It was not quite a building site. The structure was there and with imagination that took you past the pallet boards of plaster, the cables hanging out of the walls and the ceiling, it was safe to walk around on the floor waiting to be covered. The new kitchen had started to arrive and in the middle of it was the main extraction system, almost the length of the kitchen laid on the floor. The confidence of the team was high. Bookings were already being made; even the odd wedding and function had been booked. The date for opening was set for 12th December 2010. I visited half a dozen times in those 20 manic days. It was an amazing accomplishment, which just grew from that day. The first show staged was 19th February 2011 when Timmy Mallet went back to his local roots on stage with the utterly Brilliant 80’s party, followed by fine dining and wine tasting evenings and through the year,

Welcome to this first article, taking a look at many various styles of music. This first article takes a look primarily at what became Big Band music, but first we need to take a look at how Big Band came into being, what were its roots? To do this, we need to go back over a century, to the mid-west of the United States of America, where Big Band has its roots in Dixieland music, which was born out of Ragtime music – This is our starting point. Ragtime music was at its peak around 1895 to 1918. One of the pioneers of Ragtime was Ernest Hogan, an African-American performer who was a dancer, musician and comedian. Sadly, Ernest became a victim of the racist and stereotypical prejudice of the day, which would blight his career. Ernest was the first to coin the phrase ‘Ragtime’, which referred to the pace of the music played by what was usually a banjo and piano pairing. Benjamin Robertson Harney introduced Ragtime music to the mainstream public of the United States of America, composing “You’ve Been a Good Old Wagon but You Done Broke Down” in 1896, one of the earliest published Ragtime songs. Scott Joplin, an African-American composer and pianist, embraced the Ragtime genre and was dubbed the “King of Ragtime Writers”. Joplin gained success with the 1899 “Maple Leaf Rag” and the 1902 “The Entertainer”. Ragtime would fall out of favour with the mainstream public of the United States of America, when they discovered Dixieland and Jazz music. Ragtime would have revivals in the 1940s and later in the 1970s, when Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” was used as the theme music for the 1973 Oscar-winning film The Sting.

Dixieland music developed in New Orleans and quickly spread to New York City and Chicago in the 1910s, lead by touring bands from New Orleans. One of Dixieland’s most popular pieces is “When The Saints Go Marching In”, famously recorded by Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra in 1938. It was Dixieland music’s combination of trombones, trumpets and clarinets that would pave the way for Big Band music. Mainstream Jazz in the 1930s would spell the end for traditional Dixieland music, though Dixieland would go through revivals in the 1940s and 1950s. As the Dixieland bands dissolved, many of the musicians would go on to form or join established Big Bands, which from around 1915 onwards, would hold sway in the United States of America.

Teenage Entrepreneurs kick the habit Young business men targeting 1000 smokers in Cumbria
A new approach to the responsible lawful selling of e-liquids and personal vapourisers was launched on Saturday 31st October 2015 in Queen Street, Penrith. Local residents Tom Holme and Kristian Thompson, both aged 19, have not only set up their first business, but also have an ambition that aims to help 1000 smokers kick the tobacco habit by switching from cigarettes to personal vapourisers ( PV’s). Tom and Kristian gave up smoking and started vaping more than 4 years ago when the e-cigarette craze was still in its infancy. Tom had started smoking while in the Army and realised how badly it was affecting his health, especially with him suffering from asthma throughout childhood. After leaving Army training due to a back injury, he heard about vaping as a safer alternative to using tobacco and set about researching the internet for all the known facts. Tom’s product knowledge became so impressive that a local e-liquid retailer asked him to take over the management of their shop in 2014. Kristian joined Tom running the e-liquid shop in 2015 and together they have served and advised many people. Tom helped his mum, his nan, his aunty and his uncle to transfer successfully from tobacco to vaping; which is officially ‘95% safer than smoking.’ An expert independent evidence review published recently by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking. Their Key findings of the review say the current best estimate is that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than smoking and nearly half the population (44.8%) don’t realise e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking. The review also reports that there is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers. Tom and Kristian decided to start their own business because the industry was becoming more regulated and it was obvious that standards had to be legally compliant and product quality had to be the very best CumbrianLocal
available. They also knew that the law was changing on October 1st this year when it became illegal for retailers to sell e-cigarettes or the liquid used in them to someone under 18. Tom and Kristian say categorically ‘they will not be selling to under 18’s.’
£10,000 private investment from an ex-smoker Much of the dream of having their own business has been helped with raising a £10,000 private investment from a family member who is also an ex-smoker. They have worked hard to create a new style of retail experience in Penrith. Their new shop has been designed for the best shopping experience, offering a selection of quality e-liquids. Tom and Kristian have that clear goal to help at least 1000 smokers successfully transfer to vapourisers by providing a personalised service and free support to both experienced ‘vapers’ and those who, like Tom’s mum, really wanted to stop smoking but did not know how to successfully transfer. ‘I tried really hard to give up smoking for many years but just could not kick the habit. It was with some suspicion and misunderstanding that I took the first step and accepted help from Tom last year after he gave me a personal vapouriser as a Christmas gift. I have now been tobacco free for 12 months and have seen other members of my family give up smoking after switching. I certainly noticed a change in my health and of course my purse.’ Nikki Holme Ex-Smoker. VAPOLOGY Smoke Free Zone now open for business at 4 Queen Street, Penrith, just off Middlegate opposite B & M. The range available includes the MEDUSA JUICE brand alongside other carefully selected British and American products. Closer to home, Vapology even has e-liquids manufactured in Yorkshire. www.vapologysmokefreezone.co.uk www.facebook.com/vapologysmokefreezone

Let’s go loca Your first n Hi! It is nice to be back doing a radio programme. Radio is something I have always been interested in and I have been away from it for the last 8 years. Prior to joining the Eden FM Team, my radio experience back then was with hospital radio and a few fill in bits with Radio Cumbria in some regular slots. My back ground is in farming. I am a farmer’s son, originally from just outside Cockermouth in a village called Sunderland. Some of you may not know that there is a village called Sunderland, but that is over 40 years ago. How time flies when you add the years up!
Cumbria is a wonderful country to cook in, we are blessed with many amazing high quality producers that take the time to create top quality food. I moved here in 2003 to begin my culinary journey right here in Cumbria its been a fantastic journey and it only gets better each year as I discover new ingredients for my home kitchen and my work one. My Simply Good cookery School has been open in the Rheged Visitors Centre for a full year now. We opened the school so that we can continue to create, share and teach people skills, techniques and recipes that help people to gain enough confidence to go home and get themselves into their own kitchen to create. We run practical courses 1/2 day and full days, Thursdays to Sunday with a wide variety of different subjects run by myself, my team and other guest chefs with a passion for their cooking. A gift voucher for the cookery school is the perfect christmas present for that friend or family member that loves food and cooking. Go to www. simplygoodtaste.co.uk to book a place or have a voucher sent out. as a gift. For more information and news of whats going on sign up for our news letter and download a full list of our courses go to www.simplygoodtaste.co.uk Each month we will be sharing some of our recipes from the cookery school as well as some of our seasonal favourites using great Cumbrian produce. I moved to Penrith, well just outside Penrith, 40 years ago to work on a large farm at Whinfell just off the A66. Then later on, I was farm manager which was one of the best jobs I have had and I was there for 21 years. Then I thought that it was time to have a change, so still managing a farm, moved to Langwathby. Now this was totally different to what I was used to even though it was managing a farm. Why was it different? Well it was going to be an open farm and that is what I was wanting to do. It was a very good move for me because I learned a lot from it and I was there for 10 years. Whilst there I was still doing a lot with radio in one way or another. Then in 2005, I had a big change in my life and that was a new way of thinking; still around farming but working with

farmers, talking to them about their animal health and introducing them to new ways, methods, equipment that could help them with their farms. 10 years on, I am still doing that today and it is one of the best jobs I have ever had. When you are going around the countryside in Cumbria, I think it is one of the best places to live and work that you’ll ever find. Just shows that if you make up your mind, you can change and retrain for a new job. Coming into Eden FM Community Radio and doing a show is so different to my job but I think you need a hobby or an outlet. It has to be something you like to do and radio is just right for me. There are a few things I intend to do on my own shows and that is ‘My Song’ which actually is ‘your song’, so if you have a song about which you have a story to tell, then let’s have it. Tell me the reason why you like it, what it means to you and let us share that moment on Eden FM 107.5. You can have this song associated with your name or it can be anonymous. Send me an email to admin@edenfm.co.uk with the title ‘Local with Langcake request’ or write a letter and send it to Eden FM Radio Ltd, Mostyn Hall, Friargate, Penrith CA11 7XR marked for the attention of Joe Langcake.

Wainwright’s Favourite Lakeland Fell Fifty years ago, Alfred Wainwright was completing the final book of his Pictorial Guides: The Western Fells. In his Personal Notes in Conclusion he revealed his list of the six finest fells. But which was his favourite fell? In The Western Fells, he described the attributes of the finest fells: ‘The finest … must have the attributes of mountains, i.e. height, a commanding appearance, a good view, steepness and ruggedness …’ The top six were: Scafell Pike, Bowfell, Pillar, Great Gable, Blencathra and Crinkle Crags. He qualified this list by saying: ‘These are not necessarily the six fells I like best.’ So he was giving little away to his readers, but he did go on to say this: ‘Contrary to general opinion (which would favour Great Gable), the grandest of the lot is Scafell Pike.’ But are there any clues that might reveal his favourite fell? Of Scafell Pike he wrote that of the necessary attributes of a mountain ‘the Pike has these in greater measure than other high ground in the country.’ Scafell Pike p. 5. Bowfell was the first, and only, fell that he named in the chapter as one of his top six: ‘Rank Bowfell among the best half-dozen’ Bowfell p. 2. It was Pillar Rock that drew Wainwright’s attention to Pillar and he included three pages of drawings depicting the rock and its features. He devoted 28 pages to his chapter about Great Gable and wrote: ‘Great Gable is a favourite of all fellwalkers, and first favourite with many.’ Great Gable p. 2. Blencathra was the only fell that was not located in the south-western area of Lakeland, being far removed from the other five fells on the list. He wrote more about Blencathra than any other fell, filling 36 pages of The Northern Fells with descriptions of 12 different ascent routes. He spent more time on Blencathra than any other fell, spending every weekend in the winter of 1960-61 exploring the mountain. Crinkle Crags was the setting for what Wainwright called, ‘Lakeland’s best ridge-mile’, the traverse of the summit of Crinkle Crags. It was so good that he showed a detailed plan of the route in two different directions, south to north and north to south! So which was his favourite? Well, he never gave that secret away but he did tell Eric Robson in an interview: ‘Your favourite mountain is the one you happen to be on at the time.’ Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk Programme 2. Penrith Panthers U11s By Karl Collinson
The Panthers have made the transition to competitive football this year and the lads have performed well up against older more physical teams. We got our first victory over Castletown Rangers, 3.0 and got a couple of very impressive draws against Cockermouth Tigers and Keswick Reds. Reon Morrison, Loius Gould and Callum Wills have been amongst the goals while Jake Ferguson has been outstanding between the sticks. Our best performance came in the County Cup against a very strong Edenvale side who are riding high in the Carlisle U12 league. We covered every blade of grass tackling and blocking everything they

The Penrith & District Junior Football League started in September and Castletown Athletic Under 12s have started the season very well. Following on from a fine 2014/15 campaign which saw them easily finish as the highest place Under 11 team in a mixed Under 11 and 12 league, they continue to go from strength to strength. After the first 5 league games they remain undefeated, scoring 28 goals and only conceding 3 in the progress. They have played tremendous football and scored some fantastic team and individual goals while still focussing on defending and the importance of keeping a clean sheet. With lots of different goal scorers throughout the team and everyone willing to play in different positions, it really does outline the CumbrianLocal

Bonny Blues Remain Unbeaten By Karl Collinson The Bonny Blues remained unbeaten through October drawing 4 and winning 2 league matches and progressing through into the next round of the Cumberland Cup after a 7.0 demolition of AFC Carlisle.
Your 2016 Calendar girls Off the field activity for Penrith AFC Ladies means fundraising that is a vital part of the long term development strategy of the club. As well as a Bag Pack at Penrith’s Morrison’s and B&M stores, Penrith AFC Ladies have been producing and official 2016 Calendar. Amateur Photographer JP Smith (Sarah Smith’s Dad) has joined the team on their travels over the last 12 months. Each month of the Calendar is packed with action shots of the Ladies team captured by JP Smith. In contract the cover shot of the calendar sees the Ladies relaxing at the tranquil Brougham Hall where they met up before the big FA Cup tie against Burnley FC Ladies. The Calendar has been produced to a very high quality and lovingly designed by Ladies team member Ruth Hopton. She said “I hope people take the time to have a look at a copy of the Penrith AFC Ladies 2016 Calendar. It really is lovely and would look fantastic in any Cumbrian home”.
We picked up valuable points on the road at Newton Aycliffe and Whitley Bay and scored a late equaliser at home to Durham City but our 3.3 draw at Frenchfield Park to struggling Bedlington Terriers felt like 2 points dropped. We had an impressive 3.0 away win at Newcastle Benfield without really getting out of 2nd gear and had a very entertaining 3.2 home victory over Washington which climbed us upto 11th in Northern League Division 1. Off the field the club have acquired the services of ex Carlisle United U18 keeper Danny Eccles and Kevin Connelly rejoins us from Whitehaven. November sees us entertain West Auckland Town and top of the table Shildon in the league, host Newton Aycliffe in the league cup and travel to Whitehaven Miners in the Cumberland Cup. The club are running a supporters coach to West Allotment Celtic on Saturday 28th November, leaving Sandgate at 11am. Cost is £10pp. More information contact Karl Collinson pif@hotmail.co.uk
