Local shopping habits have changed. We are able to order our food online, from a supermarket that might be only 10 to 20 minutes away and we can order pretty much anything from UK and international companies today that will arrive tomorrow. It doesn’t always work. Sometimes with that online selection of food, you’re not happy with the sell by date and that item you need for that special occasion didn’t arrive. Can you give them a call and get the answer you want?
A business steeped in history established in 1797, it’s known to every builder in the trade. So when you think you need some fencing, gates, posts, sand, bricks, real stone or sleepers for your garden, some guttering, internal and external doors, hinges, locks and latches, why not buy them from a professional specialist that covers every hinge and bracket, tile and file, hammer and nail, glue or loo, fence or bench for your project in 2016.
Travis Perkins is your local Timber and Builders merchant serving the Eden Valley and across Cumbria. This spring it can offer you a huge range of products for your building project or DIY project inside your home or business through to landscaping your garden and creating your borders and boundaries. You can look online for the vast selection of products and services, which can be delivered to your door and if the items aren’t in stock today, they will be tomorrow. There is no compromise on quality and whilst other merchants might try to match the product, rarely will they beat the quality and service behind your purchase.

Welcome to your March edition of the Cumbrian Local. My thanks to all those behind and involved in this 76th edition. As an opening editorial, I have covered several topics since issue 1; some would say rants; some would agree important information, but whatever, what I do know is at this stage when I get to this point, the magazine is completed all but my piece and the final elements of the contents.

As the magazine evolves, it is encouraging to welcome new businesses every month. It is also great to witness first-hand the effects of when, as a publication we advertise for new people to help with deliveries, we have had 15 enquiries. Over the years of writing and coordinating the magazine, I have shared many stories, a lot of this coming from past experiences, some recent and some from people that I have met in between delivering the magazine, to then setting out the layout and coming back to where we are now in this opening. A big highlight for me in February was meeting an 80’s pop star, English musician, singer, and songwriter, who I followed from their first single released, ‘New Song’ in 1983, when a lot of early 80’s music was just taking shape. I attended ‘An Evening with Howard Jones’ at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with my oldest daughter who was born 16 years after he had his first appearance on Top of the Pops.

Lasting Power of Attorney By Nicola Broyan
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is one of the most useful documents you can prepare; this is a document which allows you to name one or more people, called your Attorneys, to make decisions on your behalf if you for any reason are unable to do so. There are many circumstances in which LPAs prove invaluable. Sadly, statistics show that over 830,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, but it is not only the elderly who can benefit from preparing an LPA. Accidents can befall any one at any time, and being left with a brain injury that suddenly takes your independence can be devastating. There are two types of LPA. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA allows your Attorneys to make decisions regarding your money and property, whether this be to pay bills, control investments or claim benefits on your behalf. It is important to remember that your Attorneys can only use your money to benefit you. Unless you decide otherwise, a Property and Affairs
LPA can be used even if you can still make decisions yourself. A Health and Welfare LPA is different. This can only be used by your Attorneys if you lack the capacity to make decisions regarding your health and welfare yourself. Your Attorneys might need to make decisions relating to where you live, how you are looked after and what type of medical treatment you do or do not wish to receive. What happens if you have not made an LPA, but suddenly lack the capacity to make your own decisions? Decisions still need to be made on your behalf, but in those circumstances someone, usually a family member, would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy. Unfortunately this can be a long and costly process, but is necessary when someone lacks the capacity to give instructions for the preparation of an LPA.
of LPA. If there is no LPA in place, our experienced team are able to provide assistance with applications to the Court of Protection and advice regarding the appointment of a Deputy. If you have already made an Enduring Power of Attorney, we would suggest you contact one of our lawyers for a discussion regarding your options before making a decision regarding an LPA.
At Butterworths, we provide clear and helpful advice on the preparation of either or both types

Continued from page 5 parked in a garden, not far from the college that was below a block of flats and every morning around 5am, someone would throw bread onto the top of the caravan to feed the seagulls, giving him an early morning call! He also described his time as a new musician getting on to Piccadilly Radio in Manchester when live music was permitted in the early hours. In between his engagement with the audience, he played piano versions of all those 15 top 40 hits. He never had that number one in the UK charts, as he was held off the top spot by Paul McCartney and Wings with Mull of Kintyre, the song that pipped him to the post by 200 singles in a race of around 600,000 sales in that week. At the end of the evening, I had the opportunity to meet him, which itself was an experience when he thanked Eden FM for playing his music. More recently I was shopping and putting some items through the self-scan checkout, when I hit the problem when it wouldn’t scan. A very polite lady came to my assistance. The ticket was damaged on the flowers I was buying and I made the point that back in 1981, I was working in the first store in the UK to install scanners on checkouts. The lady slipped into the conversation that she was one years old then, but was intrigued by what I had said. I explained that then many branded products didn’t have bar codes and in order to be able to scan them on arrival at the store, at the unloading bay the items were taken out of the box and put on a conveyer where they then had a bar code put on them. They then went back into the box, then into the warehouse. Difficult to imagine, but by doing this, Sainsbury’s led the way in technology for many years in the early 90’s. I was in the
first Sainsbury’s store to open on a Sunday in 1994. I worked on the design and implementation of the current warehouse and stock replenishment system that currently controls the movement of stock through distribution, logistics and retail and finally in a large store with 36 checkouts, I worked on the 24 hour trading project. Amazing the conversation you have when you’re buying your shopping. Whilst as a family business, in 1869, John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann Sainsbury set up in London. Long before this, it was in 1797 when the Benjamin Ingram Company was founded in London trading as joiners and carpenters, which from the early 1800’s started selling hardwoods which then formed as the Travis Arnold partnership in 1899. To cut a long time line short, it was in 1970 that Travis and Arnold began substantial acquisitions; then in 1988 Sandell, Smythe and Drayson merged with Ingram Perkins to form Travis Perkins. It always interests me how businesses evolve, but the roots of many are still with families. In this month’s magazine, we have quite a collection of family businesses, new, established and some just settling in and it’s great to have a mix of the small, medium and large all in one publication. Spring is finally in the air. Easter is early and the clocks will be going forward over the Easter weekend at midnight on Saturday 26th March. I’ll be back next month with your April edition, but if you would like to catch up before, you can tune in to Eden FM on 107.5 and catch up with me there one afternoon. Have a Happy Easter Lee

Young and lively or a cruise and a snooze? My education in holidays and destinations around the world continues in the Worldwide Travel Show that I have been hosting every Thursday from 2pm – 4pm from mid February to early March and has taken Eden FM listeners to another 40 destinations in our regular top ten holidays selected for each show.
16 August Glasgow – Salou - 7 Nights, All Inclusive, £1658 Total Cost for a family of 4
My brief for the show on 10th February was for the ‘young and lively’, a show that was like one long party, for those of us that were there once, the club 18 – 30 style! Ministry of sound anthems by the stars like David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Tinie Tempah and Lisa Mafia who have been headline acts in the club land destinations like Ayia Napa - Cyprus, Magaluf - Majorca, Ibiza, Kos and Corfu, were the music for the show. Feed yourself holidays (self catering) was a term I used, but there were some serious prices like! 19 August 2016 - ÂŁ323 per person based on 2 sharing Fly from Glasgow to Crete staying 14 nights Self Catering From the young and lively, our 18th February Worldwide Travel Show featured ten holidays that were all 14 day cruises. All were based on 2 sharing a cabin with ensuite facilities staying Full Board. One of the best things about cruising is that it allows you to explore new places and try new things every day. Included in the price - Return Flights, All tips & service charges, Transfers to/from your ship. The dining set up onboard meant you could eat your way around the world without even leaving the ship. The ships have at least 3 restaurants serving everything from oven-fired pizza to traditional roast beef. Entertainment onboard ranges from West End style shows and Live gigs to Stand up comedy & Quizzes. Destinations included offers like:3 May 2016 - ÂŁ1304 per person based on 2 sharing Manchester – Majorca. Ports of call include - Barcelona, Sicily & Corsica 26 August 2016 at ÂŁ1490 per person based on 2 sharing Glasgow – Corfu. Ports of call include - Crete, Mykonos, Venice & Croatia The Worldwide Travel show feature on 25th February was all about family holidays in peak times from 4th August to 20th August, where we headed off to the Canary Islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife, Menorca and Majorca, whilst also taking some time out in Sunny Beach Bulgaria, Marmaris, Turkey, Kos, Crete and Cyprus. Here is one example:-
Salou is a resort town along Spain’s north-eastern Costa Dorada. Its beaches range from small, craggy coves to the busy main stretch. It’s popular for windsurfing, sailing and golf. The coastal path, once used by fishermen, like the one immortalized in a nearby statue, is now known for its sunrise and sunset views. During our first show in March, we journey to the Mountains and Lakes of Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Slovenia. Our first holiday was Lake Trasimeno – Italy. Set in rural Umbria near the Tuscany border, Trasimeno is an ideal base from which to explore these two regions. Assisi, Perugi, Siena & Florence are all accessible in a day. The hotel is in Passignano on the northern shore of the lake. Its historic centre of cobbled streets is dominated by an imposing fortress. It has lake bathing and ferry services to the islands of Maggiore & Polvese and excellent restaurants serving local cuisine. Visit Castiglione, a medieval walled town on the other side of the lake. There is also plenty of walking to enjoy in the Trasimeno National Park, as well as fascinating Etruscan history to explore. 14/09/16 Manchester to Pisa, 7 nights - Full board £578 per person based on 2 sharing You don’t have to wait for the Worldwide Travel Show on Eden FM every Thursday 2- 4pm or Saturday 10am – 12pm. Easter - You couldn’t make it up.
The days are numbered! Soon we can again enjoy chocolate, wine or whatever we might have tried to ‘give up’ for the 40 days of Lent. Actually, there are more than 40 days from the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday) to Easter Day (March 27th this year) because it never includes the Sundays. “Now you tell me!”
people. This happens through education, training and apprenticeships, through personal and professional development as we grow and develop our own lives and the lives of others. It happens through the different networks of families, friends and communities to which we belong in different ways.
Easter is early this year, (the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox!) but it suits the transition from winter to spring; long, dark nights rapidly giving way to lighter evenings, earlier bird song and fresh life bursting through buds and springing in lambing fields. It is the time when the natural world around us seems to stretch out its arms, shake off winter stiffness and welcome the warmth of new life.
We reach Palm Sunday (20th March), follow Jesus into the city and put ourselves in the crowd that welcomed with great enthusiasm one week then screamed for blood the next. Perhaps if we’re honest we see ourselves in the somewhat fickle loyalties and shifting mob opinions portrayed in the story. Then for five days we follow and watch this tale of twisted politics, manipulative power-brokers and betrayal and compromised loyalties. In the centre of it all with increasing stillness and isolation we watch his journey to the night garden, arrest, sham trial and what? Just another bloody torture and execution. Christians today are being crucified under the terror of so-called Islamic State / Isis. The powerful have all the cards, might is right, the vulnerable are crushed; death always has the last laugh.
The great Easter story is rooted in the ancient Jewish Passover narrative of freedom from slavery and their new identity as a people. There had to be a leaving behind before the new was possible, but the surprising truth is that the reality of freedom proves to be very challenging. On the journey to freedom some longed for ‘the good old days’ back in Egyptian slavery. Mary met the risen Jesus on the first Easter morning, wanted to hold him tightly but had to literally let go of the past before she could be a part of the new future. None of us finds it easy to let go of the secure, familiar ways of making sense of the world. We can see our place in the story whatever our own sense of faith or interpretation of what happened. “Hold on, don’t rush too fast, we’re not there yet.” During the next few weeks we move gradually towards the great story of Holy Week and Easter. Mothering Sunday has just passed and while many will especially give thanks for mums and families, we also think more widely about caring, nurturing, growing and developing CumbrianLocal
Then it happens. After the darkest moment of absolute desolation, when our last flicker of hope has been extinguished and we creep cautiously to the place of grief, then the sun nudges the horizon, bird song breaks the morning stillness and three words change everything for ever ‘He is risen!’ You couldn’t make it up. Why on earth would you? It’s utterly absurd. It’s truly wonderful. Wishing everyone a wonder-filled Easter. Cauliflower Textures Serves 4-6 people
This month Steve Pott, head chef at The Stoneybeck Inn shares a unique 6 – part recipe creating a new and inspiring dish from the humble Cauliflower. This popular and tasty vegetable is extremely versatile and offers many benefits in being low in fat, carbohydrates and protein but yet proportionally high in vitamins B, C and K. What’s not to like?
Part 1 - Cauliflower and Romanesco broccoli slices • 2 cauliflower florets 1 white-1 purple • 2 Romanesco florets Here’s How: Cut the florets into slices by cutting them in half lengthways and then using a mandolin to shave 12mm thick slices of the cut faces. Lay on a tray and cover with a damp cloth.
Shave the top layer of tiny florets off the cauliflower; you need 160g in total. Place on a chopping board and cross chop it with a knife until it is the texture of couscous.
Part 4 - Pearl Barley • 200g of pearl barley •1000ml of water •20g of salt
Part 2 - Cauliflower and Romanesco broccoli pickles
Here’s How:
• 400ml of water • 50ml of white wine vinegar • 50ml of pomace oil • 1g of fennel seeds • 7g of salt • 7g of sugar • 50g of cauliflower florets • 50g of Romanesco florets
Place all the ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil. Turn down and simmer for 20-30 minutes until soft and tender. Strain and chill.
Here’s How: For the cauliflower and Romanesco pickles, put all the ingredients except the florets in a pan and bring to a boil. Take off the heat and leave to infuse for 30 minutes. Pass through a sieve. Divide the liquid between two small pans and bring to a boil. Put the cauliflower in one and the Romanesco in the other and bring both back to the boil. Take off the heat and cool in the vinegar
Part 3 - Cauliflower couscous •1 cauliflower Here’s How: CumbrianLocal
Part 5 - Cauliflower milk and purée • 3 cauliflowers • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 6g of salt • 800ml of milk • 200ml of water • 1 lemon, halved Here’s How: For the cauliflower milk and purée, shave the top layer of tiny florets off each cauliflower; you should end up with 600g in all. Sweat the cauliflower shavings in the olive oil with some of the salt until they start to soften. Add the milk and water and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5-10 minutes or until cooked. Pass through a sieve, and stand the liquid to one side. Blend the cauliflower with enough of the milk to make a purée. Pass through a sieve and season with salt and some lemon juice.

April. The Start of Spring By Pam Waggott April is the month when things seem to come to life again after the long days of winter. It is thought that this is how the month got its name from the Latin word ‘aperire’ which means ‘to open’. The month begins with a day of jokes and teases on April Fools day, though the origins are hidden in the past there is some thought that it came about due to the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which is the calendar still used today. The Julian calendar, that was used prior to that date, had ‘gained’ ten days over the years. New Year in the Julian calendar could fall between 25th March and 1st April. Pope Gregory moved the new calendar dates forward by ten days, however in France people refused to accept the new calendar at all and continued to celebrate New Year on the first of April and as such they often had tricks played on them and were called April Fools. The Gregorian calendar was accepted in Britain in 1752 and that brought about April Fooling in this country. One of the most convincing April Fools played in Britain was in 1957 when the BBC broadcast a documentary on Panorama all about the spaghetti farmers and harvests in Switzerland. The programme showed ‘footage’ of a family picking strands of spaghetti from the trees and laying them on the ground to dry in the sunshine. Hundreds of people fell for the joke and the BBC received many queries and questions about the programme...including how people could grow their own spaghetti trees! More recently April Fool jokes have included a growing number of online teases such as the launch of Google Gulp – a ‘smart drink’ that improves intelligence and reduces thirst! St George’s day falls on 23rd April and it is also the date of Shakespeare’s birth and death. CumbrianLocal
St George is the Patron Saint of England and also the patron saint of Scouting. The emblem of St George is a red cross on a white background and is part of the Union flag. It was adopted by King Richard the Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century, as worn by the king’s soldiers on their tunics to identify them in battle. Historically St George was born in Turkey and lived in the 3rd century, his parents were Christian and he became a Roman soldier and was renowned for his bravery. Although he served under the non-Christian Emperor he never forgot his faith and protested against Rome’s persecution of the Christians. He was imprisoned and tortured because of his beliefs and was ultimately beheaded in Lydda in Palestine on 23rd April 303. In 1222, the Council of Oxford declared the date as St George’s day replacing St Edmund the Martyr as the patron saint of England in the 14th Century. William Shakespeare is one of the world’s greatest writers creating plays for the theatre and poetry. He was born on 23rd April in Stratfordupon-Avon in 1564 and died on the same date in 1616 making 2016 the 400th anniversary of his death this year. His first play was Henry VI and his last was Henry VIII. He wrote comedies with happy endings often with farcical twists and turns of mistaken identity, disguises and confusion such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he wrote tragedies with sad endings such as Romeo and Juliet and also many historical plays about real people such as Julius Caesar or the English Kings. His plays often used a wide range of ‘special effects’ to enhance the performances – flames, drums, smoke and even cannons! In 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII a cannon set fire to the straw roof of the

Globe theatre burning it to the ground. Women did not perform during the Tudor era and female parts were played by boys. It is said that Shakespeare himself appeared on stage during the performance of Hamlet – as the ghost. Actors often materialised on stage by being lowered on wires from above or popped up through a trapdoor on the stage to surprise the audience! April is also the month of Daffodil Day (1st Sunday of the month) the day when Victorian families picked daffodils from their gardens and took them to local hospitals for the sick. Candle Auctions were held on the 6th April. This was the day when land was put up for sale; a candle was lit with a pin stuck in it about two and a half centimetres from the top. Bidding would start for the piece of land released by the church for the poor to let for a year. The person bidding when the candle burned down and the pin dropped would be the owner of the land. Primrose Day (19th April) was originally introduced as a memorial to the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who died on this day in 1881 and it was said that primroses were his favourite flower. However it transpired that is was a misunderstanding of a message on the wreath of primroses laid by Queen Victoria who was in fact referring to her late husband, Prince Albert, when she said they were ‘his favourite flowers’. And finally one or two other facts about April: the gemstone for April is the diamond and the flower is the sweet pea. If your birthday falls in April then you are astrologically either Aries (the Ram) or Taurus (the Bull), Concorde made its maiden flight in April 1969, the Queen was born on 21st April, DNA was discovered on 25th of the month and in 1961 Yuri Gagarin made the first flight into space.

Eden107.5 The new season with Eden FM by Lee Quinn
In working your way through this month’s Cumbrian Local, you may have noticed a number of businesses linking to your community radio station. To strengthen the income to the radio and increase the day time content from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, we have set up a new initiative. Playing an advert is around 30 seconds and for a business to promote itself, it cannot always be achieved just by getting your name, your number and website details out plus something about the business as well. Then add this 30 second production into a sequence of 6 to 8 advertisements trying to achieve the same; whilst it may work, it’s also going to cost.
Come into Fellside Carpets & Flooring we’ve got it covered, floor to ceiling Your local professional team of experts, providing you with the best in quality, range and advice taken from years of experience in the business of getting it right. Spring, bounce or walk, just come in and talk, a splash of colour, some new ideas, come visit the team now at Fellside, for all your Carpet, flooring and decorating requirements for your home
An advertorial in a magazine lasts longer than 30 seconds. Six to seven hundred words as an advertorial can get quite a message across, but what happens when you get print and radio working together? Since January, Eden FM has been working on a new offer for organisations and businesses that is not just an advert and not just sponsorship. The ‘Be Seen and Be Heard’ concept has been launched, working in partnership with local organisations and businesses. It is only available through Eden FM 107.5 and Cumbrian Local which includes ‘On air’ and ‘Off air’ activity, which cannot be created by any other media company in this region. On Offer is:-

A ‘bird’s eye’ view from the Rostrum! Thom Sarjeant has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge over the years, training from a young age; he is the second generation of auctioneers in his family. Thom’s father was an auctioneer, selling livestock for over 40 years; you could say it was in his blood. Ask Thom anything! He knows his Texel from his Herdwick’s and his diamonds from cubic zirconia! Thankfully at Sarjeant Group, we deal less with the livestock and more about the vintage! After over 20 years in the business, Thom can still get those preauction butterflies. Thom remarks ‘the exhilaration from selling is second to none, especially when something special comes along
to sell. It’s rewarding when the hammer goes down and it’s exceeded expectations’, but it’s not without its pressures. Auctioneering is hard work, when Thom is on the rostrum; it’s not just the people in the room he has to watch. Using the online platform of www.the-saleroom.com, Thom sells to a worldwide audience. Anyone can listen and bid live online, call and bid over the phone or leave commission bids, it’s all for Thom to co-ordinate during those split selling seconds whilst ensuring the item meets it’s valuation for the vendor. Auctioneering isn’t for the fainthearted; you require the eyes of a hawk and the speed of an eagle!
Our next Antiques and Jewellery Auction is on Thursday 7th April from 5.30pm. Viewing will be available online and in store a week prior to the auction. Items included will be a collection of fine jewellery, one of which is a beautiful 2.7ct Diamond Solitaire ring. We welcome all to come and enjoy the auction atmosphere, whether it is to buy that one off antique or experience your first auction. Last month we talked a lot about the service and commitments Dickie and his teams have in delivering prices that cannot be beaten when it comes to all aspects of roofing from loose tiles, to leaky roofs and completely new roofing projects. We have had a break in the weather since the February update, though this doesn’t generally affect the teams, but what it has meant is the teams covering 7 days a week in order to deal with the enquiries and for the many homes and businesses they have been dealing with, the need to complete on time or early, is one that continues to be another success on offer with the guarantee of beating any quote by 10%.

The Wainwright Society 2015 Photographic Competition
The Wainwright Society’s annual Photographic Competition has just been judged by Derry Brabbs, the photographer who collaborated with Alfred Wainwright in the 1980s to produce seven of his ‘large format’ books. There were 117 entries in the two classes, a Themed Class and an Open Class with an overall Best in Show photograph. The winner of the Themed Class (Upon reaching the summit …) and judged Best in Show was Niels Rasmussen with his photograph, The summit of Sallows Derry commented: ‘This is an outstanding photograph laden with atmosphere and one can almost smell the cold just looking at it. The undulating remnant of stone wall has been perfectly employed as a composition tool and the silhouetted walker and dog are perfectly placed within the frame.
The summit of Sallows taken by Niels Rasmussen
However, it is the fabulous blue wintry sky with streaked cloud formations that really makes the image stand out and really does back my insistent mantra that skies really do matter in landscape photography.’ In selecting The summit of Sallows as Best in Show, Derry said: ‘I had the unenviable task of choosing which of the two class winners should be awarded the accolade of ‘Best in Show’. Both images were outstanding but in the end I

had no qualms about selecting The summit of Sallows as it readily passed the ‘which picture would I never tire of looking at on my wall test’ and so my congratulations to the frostbitten photographer who braved the harsh elements to capture that stunning image.’ The winner of the Open Class was Ed Hamblett with his photograph, Derwentwater. Derry commented: ‘This is a very strong composition laden with atmosphere. The strong silhouette of the gate and fence leading down into the heart of the image take the viewer’s eye up to the line of fells on the horizon. The clouds are very strong and their reflections on the water combine to make a strikingly graphic image.’ If you would like to know more about The Wainwright Society, log on to the website at: www. wainwright.org.uk or email: secretary@wainwright.org.uk Derek Cockell Secretary The Wainwright Society

Bonny Blues Update By Karl Collinson
The Bonny Blues got their season back underway on Saturday 30th January after a gap of over two months due to the shocking rainfall over the winter. All things considered, we managed to play very well and came away with a creditable goalless draw at Jarrow Roofing. Unfortunately we suffered our first defeat since October away at the current Northern League champions, Marske United in the league cup.
Off the field, we couldn’t stop top scorer Martyn Coleman leaving to join current Northern League Division 2 leaders, South Shields. Everyone at the club wishes him good luck at his new club and hopefully we’ll see him back down at Frenchfield Park one day.
© Ben France
The following Saturday saw us host Marske at Frenchfield Park which turned out to be a really entertaining game but we just fell short, losing 3.2. We then hosted local rivals, Workington Reds, in the quarter final of the Cumberland Cup. The visitors took the lead with a 35 yard screamer but Robbie Hebson came off the bench to equalise for us. We then conceded a penalty which was duly punished. We pressurised the visitors goal but they blocked everything we threw at them and ended up going out of the County Cup, 2.1. The lads did the club proud against our visitors who are 2 leagues higher.
© Ben France
We managed to get back to winning ways after that with a narrow 1.0 victory over West Alottment Celtic, Adam Main with the goal, and currently we sit 13th in the league. We will play twice a week now up to 7th May due to missing so much of the winter. We host high flying Shildon and Morpeth in March with CumbrianLocal

So, which of these Toyota Avensis Tourers will suit you best? Andrew Kidd tries both petrol and diesel versions......
The month of March; hopefully it will bring warmer weather, an opportunity to get out into the garden, Spring-cleaning, and...... the new ‘16’ number plate. Sure, it’d be nice to go out and spend some hardearned money on a brand new car, complete with that unique ‘new car’ smell. The neighbours may well be impressed with it, but what if you’d rather spend half the purchase price or less on a stylish model with modern looks, a great warranty and access to the same great servicing team as those brand spanking new cars? Going back a decade or so, there was a segment of the market known as ‘estate cars’, generally designed to offer as much load space as possible, and not much else. Early versions couldn’t quite achieve this objective without looking like something out of Postman Pat; boxy, slab-sided affairs which guzzled gallons of fuel, and had the drag coefficient of a brick. Toyota, however, were one of the first manufacturers to break that mould, combining stylish good looks with a voluminous load area, as witnessed by the accompanying photos. Such is the demand for used versions of these versatile vehicles, that there were only two examples left at Jim Walton’s garage; one diesel and one petrol. Both cars were finished in silver, showing off the modern lines to good effect. The front end is CumbrianLocal
particularly easy on the eye, with an acutely angled windscreen leading down to the smiley curved leading edge of the bonnet. All this is good news in achieving a low drag coefficient, which together with high gearing (the diesel is
The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales
only ticking over at less than 2000 rpm at 70mph) results in pretty decent fuel consumption for such a big car, with the diesel returning mid-to-high forties per gallon, with more available with a gentler right foot. That might be a little difficult, however, once you’ve sampled the

torque available from this eager yet quiet engine. Historically, diesels have been regarded as noisy and boring plodders. Forget all that! There’s a real push in all six gears, even from low revs. Driving on winding roads can be rewarding, with the well-placed gearstick needing minimal movement.
