Customer Satisfaction with SsangYong I spoke to four customers and gathered feedback on the four key models in the range, covering everyday use, leisure and more importantly around Cumbria, farming.
It has almost been a year since Ullswater Road Garage announced that it was to add to its portfolio the Cumbria SsangYong dealership. The first cars arrived in October 2013 on the forecourt. With new models added to the range, a new shape for the Rexton launched in January 2014 and the national award by the Caravan Club for the Korando as Tow Car of the year, rather than just produce an advert this month, I persuaded Cumbria SsangYong to let me talk to some of the customers that have purchased a SsangYong in this period.
Mr B purchased his Korando in March 2014. It was essential that he had an all round vehicle, with the capability of towing his caravan. The Korando has proven to be a great all rounder; a 4x4, 2 LTR engine, at a great price with many luxuries including leather seats, a tow bar (caravan club members only) along with many other extras. He has now completed 6,000 miles and generally averages 47 miles to the gallon and whilst he has recently upgraded his caravan to a larger van, he praised the Korando for an average 30 miles to the gallon whilst towing. Mr TW.F purchased his Rexton in January 2014. He was not a new customer to SsangYong with his first memories of the early models from the National Carriage Driving competition in Winsor where SsangYong were a sponsor.
Impressed then, he bought his first Rexton which he kept for 7 years, trading it in for the newer model. He describes his new 2 LTR, automatic, diesel as continuation of trouble free motoring and supported by the 5 year unlimited warranty, he says he couldn’t ask for more at that price. Mr J.B, when I called him was preparing cattle for a show. His everyday usage of the Korando Sport Pick was described as very well equipped, an economical 2 LTR, a comfortable drive with its leather seats and the rear visibility he described as the best he had come across compared to other pickups. Mrs M was simply in search of a 4x4 people carrier and on seeing the Turismo, Mrs M had found the perfect all round people carrier that was an automatic, 4x4, 7 seater which ticked all the boxes. Mrs M went on to describe the SsangYong as outstanding value, with many extras and she confessed she had discovered it quite by accident when she spotted it on the forecourt.

Welcome to the July edition of your Cumbrian Local Greetings from a Guest Editor A brief phone call late one Friday from Lee Quinn informing me that he was heading away on a much needed, and well earned, family holiday resulted in his parting words “could you keep an eye on things and write the editor’s note?” Hmm, of course?! So, please bear with me as I wrestle with words that will do justice to the work of the contributors in this edition. In between the articles that encourage you to explore, be entertained, employed, energy efficient or enterprising in Eden and beyond, there are our fabulous advertisers, offering great products. In fact, you could probably restyle your home from roof to renewables simply using them. The 4th July in the USA is celebrated as Independence Day, whereas over here there is a growing movement to support local business on Independents Day every 4th July and Small Business Saturday, on the first Saturday in December. Penrith and Appleby-in-Westmorland both signed up as Totally Locally towns, which help give independent businesses a fabulous platform to promote themselves and invite customers to explore some hidden gems. As an independent business, this magazine has been able to give visibility to sectors, subjects and services that might not have been able to do this elsewhere, shared community news stories rather than press releases and provided affordable glossy advertising. It certainly gave me a space to write about the things I encounter day by day. My doctor, whilst she was wielding a great needle in my direction, said how much she enjoyed reading my articles. That conversation sparked the idea for a future article. Don’t worry there’s no guts and gore, just a look at the way that our rural GP practices are working together to offer a diverse range of well-being and health care services in the community. I hope you enjoy our July edition and we look forward to catching up with you, either at Penrith Show where you should be able to buy your own Penrith & Eden Valley Monopoly board, or in September when we’ll again be looking at the people and places that make our corner of Cumbria such an inspiring, and independent, place to be. I think I am one of the only people that uses the words innovation and tradition in the same sentence, but in a business that is based around growing long term partnerships in supporting many businesses, it’s not all about just placing advertising in a magazine. Walkers By Alan Smyth
In August 2011, I closed the first article that I wrote about the family business that we know as Walkers Funeral Directors with this paragraph:Cumbrian Local is about people, it’s about families and it’s about businesses in the community. I will be talking further with Peter and Eileen, spending time with them and Alan and Sue, who will at some point take over the running of the important business because that’s how it is at Walker’s and that’s how they hope it will always be – one family looking after the needs of another.

Peter’s life was a full one and is a story in itself through the times of change that he had experienced. Peter was born on 6th January 1943 at Halton Terrace, Glenridding. His father was a miner at Greenside Mine before becoming postmaster at Glenridding where they lived. Life in Glenridding for
There were more articles to follow and a friendship which grew in just the four years that I worked with and socially spent time with Peter Messenger and his family. I was shocked like many to hear of his sudden death. As a celebration of Peter’s life and his achievements, Eileen, Alan and Sue kindly offered the words for this farewell. Never at peace from an early age, he was working seven days a week, which was something he continued to do almost all of his life; only in the more latter years having time to take some holidays. After school, one of his first jobs was as an apprentice at Keiser’s Garage in Penrith, where he learned his craft as a mechanic which was to stand him in good stead, as for the rest of his life he would continue to use a range of vehicles through his work. Peter married Eileen Walker at Christ Church in Penrith in 1969 and he moved to live in Penrith at

Frenchfield Gardens. His next job was to begin his long association as he went to work for Walkers Taxis in Penrith, a business belonging to Eileen’s father and mother. At that time they carried out work with taxis, wedding cars, funeral cars and assisted funeral directors across the Eden Valley with their work. This included work for the coroner and police, attending sudden deaths, deliveries on behalf of Citylink and chauffeuring many dignitaries and celebrities around the Lake District and across the country. Indeed in his time they have driven or provided cars locally and further afield for the likes of Prince Charles, Willie Whitelaw, Cliff Richards, TV personalities and many others. Indeed the variation of cars and jobs that was required of Walkers over those years is still well remembered by many people we speak to today.
the progression and growth of the funeral directing business, Peter and Eileen bought a dilapidated Tynefield House on Bridge Lane in 1983 with the vision of making it the superior quality funeral premises and family home that it is today. This vision and continued work has allowed Tynefield House to become best placed to help and provide for families at the time they need it most. As Peter has discussed in previous articles, here at Eden Local, in his fifty years as a Funeral Director, he has witnessed and driven forward many changes within funerals across the Eden valley and beyond. following a hearse because many people did not have their own transport to the more ceremonial use of family cars, the giving of donations rather than of a car full of flowers, a proper chapel of rest for families to spend precious time with their loved ones in an atmosphere of peace and serenity. The increase in choice of coffin design, to the huge array of choice available to people today. Bespoke stationary such as service cards made solely for the funeral service instead of the use of hymns books where available. All now commonplace yet hard to imagine that it once was not this way. By far and away the biggest change over the span of Peter’s time carrying out funerals has been the purely functional role of an ‘undertaker’ to supportive and directional role of a ‘Funeral Director’. From the early days of purely organising the logistics of a funeral of when where and how, to the help, support and guidance which makes what many see as a sad family event into something that can be looked upon as a recognition and celebration of what someone has meant to everyone
With all the experience gained during all the funeral work, Peter and Eileen took the step for Walkers to begin leading and directing funerals in their own right. With the support of Eileen along with her parents, the funeral business continued to expand and grow to eventually take precedence over the other aspects of the business. else in their life here with us. As well as his work, perhaps what has been most touching to us as a family has been the comments of what Peter meant to so many people. Probably most prominent has been his ultra-witty and dry sense of humour often turning the most distressing times into one of lightness and hilarity, his ever present smartness of dress code, even managing to cut the grass in a shirt, tie and sports jacket and his care and generosity to those he came across regardless of their social standing or stature. Walkers are a family firm now well into its third generation and they continue to serve and support the local community at a time when they are most needed. Peter and Eileen continued on from Eileenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents and with myself and Susan joining the firm full time over five years ago. This allows Walkers to continue with its core values of
professional service and care from one family to another, moving with the times yet respecting traditions. In more recent years with a view to semi-retirement, Peter and Eileen had even managed to have their first foreign holidays for more than thirty years, opting to cruise on the Baltic.
Of course outwardly all the partners here at Walkers, Eileen, myself and Susan, will continue to serve the local families we work for in the same way that we always have and our own family loss gives us extra strength and compassion to look after all who call on us for advice and support when they need it most. With both the second and third generation still working day to day, we will continue and you never know, our own children may hopefully want to continue on as well with the next generation. That perhaps would be the best legacy to Peter as Eileen, his daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kathryn and Susan, along with their children Archie, Elliot and Rowan really were at the heart of his life and work.

Remembering Ralph Back in the March edition of this magazine I penned a few words, with images by Paul at Witt-Woo Photography, as a reflection upon the history and heritage of a special place in Appleby, owned by a very special person, Ralph Harrison. Many were sad to learn of him passing away in the summer. However, at his funeral in August, the mood was truly a celebration of a life well-lived, with everyone having very special memories of a wonderful man. I attended the funeral and was able to pass a few copies of the article to Ralph’s family. They have since been in touch to thank me for sharing the article, and have asked for copies that can be displayed in the Bridge Street Motors window, and additional copies to share with family members. Many people contacted the magazine asking for copies and we were able to send an electronic version, however there are still a few copies of the original magazine in my office in Appleby on Cross Croft (next to Eden View Garage). Sunshine, Shopping a The Sun shone on the shoppers who went to the launch of Appleby-in-Westmorland Totally Locally campaign, which also heralded the start of a two week Fiver Fest. Some local businesses and shops signed up to put together special offers for only £5, the goods or services often more than double that value. The offers run for 2 weeks, culminating on Saturday 20th September, which coincides with the drawing the town raffle. Raffle tickets, £1 each, are available from participating stores, Appleby TIC or by calling Amanda (Soapbox Designs and the project champion) on 07557 336218. Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks With all the Back to School promotions in the shops, sitting uncomfortably alongside the Christmas tins of sweets, my mind turns to my own school days. I was an enthusiastic student, with a voracious appetite for learning, but more importantly I was a fashion icon – well by 1970s standards. Picture if you will, a gangly girl who wore a bright yellow satin shirt with super huge lapels, a pleated pinafore, Clarks sensible shoes and a bowl cut to rival any medieval page boy. As a youngster I was very shy, never wanted to join in games, take the lead in assemblies etc, however, those who know me now will say that I have overcome that shyness and will usually be found in the midst of things. Whilst my confidence may have changed, the desire to learn never left me. The combination of Mellbreak & Crummock Water are essential partners in a successful scenery enterprise, depending on each other for effectiveness.
We then made our way to the north top of 1668ft where we looked down onto Loweswater lake. The descent from here is also very steep but far more interesting than the way up. The north of Crummock Water was
Park at the Kirkstile Inn in Loweswater, then take the bridleway for about half a mile to a small wood where the path forks, left takes you directly up to the north top, but we carried on into Mosedale along the valley path towards the south top. A tree in the boggy wasteland of Mosedale is a conspicuous landmark named the ‘Mosedale Holly Tree’ is worth noting. Just before this point the path takes a very steep ascent of about 45 degrees to a depression between the north & south tops. We headed off to the south top of 1676 ft with CumbrianLocal

to our right and half way down there is ‘a lovely peep around the corner’ which gave us a view down the full length of Buttermere valley. Soon we were returned to the small wood near the start and onto the bridleway back to the Kirkstile Inn. This walk is about four miles long and took us three hours, I would grade it as moderate.

When Alfred Wainwright was conducting research in the 1950s for his Pictorial Guides he would often spend nights on the fells in favourable weather. It wasn’t wild camping as all he would take with him was an old army blanket to keep out the night chill. But on Coronation night (Tuesday 2nd June 1953) he passed the night in a barn in Grisedale after a day walking the fells. He recounted the story to Eric Robson in the television series about the Coast to Coast Walk, filmed in 1989. AW ‘And this barn ... has a ... has a memory for me. On Coronation Day it was a public holiday and I came over here, spent the night in
this barn without the permission of the farmer, and, er ... felt a bit apprehensive in case he came along ... so I was off at dawn to catch the first bus from Grasmere back to Kendal where I had to be at the office at nine o’ clock. When I got back to the office, I found that, um ... Hillary and Tenzing had climbed Everest ... the same ... on Coronation Day, the same day.** And that rather pricked a bubble for me because I had always had an impossible ambition to be the first man on Everest. So, it’s a day that I remember.

No longer the Its all gone quiet article Its the date to remember the 18th September It has been a long time coming; for some more than a few years. As the information was press released on 29th July when many were on holiday, I find that I still get asked what the result was. For those of you who missed this historical moment, here is the press release from Eden District Council. With the final decision date on this process being 18th September, we’ll have a follow up on what comes next in our October issue. Penrith residents have voted 2:1 in favour of establishing a Town Council for their area. The local electorate has been asked for views in a postal ballot that formed part of a Community Governance Review being conducted by Eden District Council. The results of the postal ballot show that 65% of people voted in favour of establishing a Town Council and 35% voted against. Forty-one percent (5,089) of Penrith’s electorate took part in the ballot out of a potential 12,196 electors. The average turnout for a Community Governance Review for comparison is around 30%.

Eden District Council’s Leader, Councillor Gordon Nicolson OBE, said: “The people of Penrith have made an historic decision in voting for a Town Council. I am pleased that the result shows a significant majority for the decision. This will mean that all of Eden District will have a Town or Parish Council to represent the views of residents. I welcome the result. We will ask the Council at its next meeting on 18 September to endorse the result and agree to set up a shadow Town Council to engage with residents and make preparations for elections in May 2015.
