Dear Residents and Businesses Welcome to the April 2012 issue of Eden Local. It’s the Spring edition, the evenings are getting lighter, the Summer is on its way. It’s been another busy month for the team. My thanks to Sam for digging into the garden features and co-ordinating our village special with businesses in Melmerby (pages 24 – 26). Welcome to Keith Wood, local photographer and author who has joined us to assist with photography and the editorial of our new project, which launches this Summer, Route 66 England. There is more about Keith on page 27. We have an historical route to map out following our very own A66, which in the form of a pocket guide, will contain places to eat, stay, play, important historic landmarks and local knowledge approximately 20 miles either side of the A66. The project will be part sponsored and funded by advertising and like any Eden Local product, advertising will be available at very economical prices. For more details about this, please email info@route66england. co.uk. Prior to the launch of our Route 66 England guide next month, Lakes Local commences distribution, via Royal Mail door to door service in the Keswick area. The distribution for this new publication will be just over 6,000. Eden Local will be increasing again as we move further into CA10. Currently in CA10 1, we expand into CA10 2 from June. CA10 3 is also now scheduled for distribution later in the year. In this month’s issue, we have an article about the force behind Eden Local’s distribution through the doors of every home and business in our areas of distribution. The Royal Mail, the full story is on pages 34 – 35 following Sam and I visiting the Penrith Sorting Office. As I do every month, I have been out and about. My efforts of trying golf, the full story is on page 20 -21 of when I visited the Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range. Recently I took some time out with Ben who works at the Kings Arms in Temple Sowerby and I discovered a wonderful walk, which starts across the road from the Kings Arms and runs in various loops taking in a great river walk (page 22). I also met up with a young shepherd, Jacob, age 10 in the middle of lambing (page18). Following on from the success of the World Marmalade Festival, I met up with Jane HasellMcCosh to find out how it all started and why (Page 29). As always, I have so many people to thank. My thanks to
the many new businesses. I think it’s 15 this month, who have signed up with Eden Local and those businesses who have already signed up with the new Lakes Local publication. My thanks to all those existing businesses for your continued support to our local publication. And finally to you for opening your Eden Local this month. Thank you. Lee Quinn, Editor

Eden Valley Home Impro The message here is simple, make Eden Valley Home Improvements your first call for home improvements, windows, solar, doors , bedrooms, conservatories and kitchens.
In the long term If you are thinking about future savings through creating a better energy efficient home, you may need new windows or to upgrade your existing windows before you install a solar system. The prices for both don’t have to be out of this world and shared between two companies with two profit margins. Eden Valley home improvements can help you with both of these projects and this will mean potential savings in the installation cost.
In the short-term Don’t despair with those perennial repairs, think about replacing soffits and facia’s this spring. This time next year you won’t need to.

We often gauge our success at attracting wildlife to our gardens by the number and variety of birds that visit. Indeed, we are sometimes happy to just look at garden birds and we forget about the rest of the ecosystem of which they are a part. But taking a holistic approach, by including as much of the ecosystem as we can in our gardens means we can support wildlife from the bottom, like microbes and insects, to the top, such as predators like owls. We can influence the wildlife in our garden by adding wildlife-friendly plants. Plants encourage insects, insects encourage birds and small mammals, and these in turn encourage larger birds and mammals. When part of the cycle fails it can impact on other wildlife. Without bees and other vital insects our plants would not be pollinated, stunting reproduction, and without butterflies there would be no caterpillars for young garden birds to eat in spring. So planting wildlifefriendly plants is one small way in which we can all help. Incorporating native plants will have the biggest impact in encouraging wildlife to your garden

and many, like ragged robin and teasels, can look beautiful as part of a cottage style garden. If you are thinking of planting for wildlife consider planting birdsfoot trefoil. It has lovely yellow pea-like flowers over a long period in the summer months and is a food plant for the common blue butterfly and six spotted burnet moth caterpillars. It can be grown in poorly drained places that get waterlogged periodically. Ivy is an extremely good wildlife plant. Being evergreen it provides year-round protection for all manner of animals. On warm October days, ivy in a sunny position can be covered in butterflies, bees, and flies. Alder buckthorn is a small tree or shrub and is the food plant for the brimstone butterfly’s caterpillars. Its small leaves go wonderfully yellow in autumn and throughout the summer it has small yellow flowers.
If you’re short of space consider converting an existing shed or outbuilding roof into a green roof. Sedum, although not native, it very tough and will be able to survive in a small amount of soil on a roof, but also attracts lots of insects. There are native plants that will thrive here too such as sea thrift, stonecrop and harebell. The Trust stands up for wildlife, creates wildlife havens, and seeks to raise environmental awareness. The people who flock to the Birds’ Bistro like the cottage industry feel of the place and they can see mixing, weighing, bagging, sealing and labelling on site. They also like to chat and talk about what comes to their gardens. They are greeted by a great team of staff, who are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic, are on hand to offer advice and guidance.
Why use The Birds’ Bistro? Well basically it is down to high quality food with no waste – wheat and other grains are often found in regular bird food to bulk it out and this is why you get feed discarded to sprout under the feeder. Richard, the owner, is proud of the Birds’ Bistro’s tremendous reputation and it’s large and innovative range of seed and says the seed mixes have evolved over many years and are based upon the feedback and expert advice we get from customers. ‘I think it
fair to say that we know better than most what does, but more importantly want doesn’t, appeal to the birds of Cumbria’. The feeds have been specially developed for use in hanging bird feeders, bird tables and ground feeding as well as special ranges for softbills (such as robins, wrens and blackbirds) and fledgelings. We have a variety of options to suit every garden and budget as well as catering for everyone from those who just like to see the garden birds to those who are serious about bird feeding and like to save money by buying in bulk. The Birds’ Bistro is also renowned for the range of Red Squirrel food, feeders and expertise. As the operational centre for Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group they are passionate about squirrels and encourage everyone to help them survive and thrive here in Cumbria (see www.penrithredsquirrels.org.uk). Wildlife really makes a garden and you will find all you need at the bistro including bug boxes for ladybirds and homes and food for hedgehogs. Go and take a look, bring the kids too, they are open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm Local free delivery.

Dear Mr Osborne…. It’s time for a budget for SMEs By the time you read this the Chancellor will have revealed his March 2012 Budget. Whilst he may still not have much room for manoeuvre (despite better tax revenues), his budget needs to provide real opportunities for the SME sector. SMEs make up a very high proportion of the total number of businesses in the UK, provide about 59% of all private sector jobs and 9% of turnover in the UK - so it makes it even more important for the Government to help create the right conditions for growth in this sector.
elcri
Critically the right conditions for growth include access to finance, but the centralised banks are now hindering the SME sector in particular and the UK economy as a whole. With access to the right finance, our clients will be able to put their expansion plans into action.
ycnatnuocca
So tinkering with corporation tax rates, national insurance and so on will have little immediate impact. We need policies and incentives that go straight to the coal face of the economy, that will be substantial and long lasting, and will help generate confidence, growth and jobs for the long term. It’s time to put our money where it’s needed most – be bold Mr Osborne!

Eden Estate Agents
Writing this, there’s a distinct hint of (albeit chilly!) Spring in the air. A bit of sunshine at this time of year definitely brings more people into the housing market. We’ve seen lots more requests for valuation and marketing advice, and more viewings.
Remember what Eden offers -
There are more people having a look at what’s on the market and deciding what to have a closer look at – up significantly from the closing months of 2011. Internet browsing figures have risen substantially.
•Assessment of your objectives and preparation for sale
Now is the time for house sellers to take stock of where they are. If you’re already on the market, time to take a long hard look at how your current estate agent is trying to sell it. Have a closer look at their web presentation and the brochure they have designed. Look at their shop window displays and think about what advice they’ve been giving you over the past months. Are you in the best position to take advantage of the buyers who are buying, or is it all not quite good enough? If you’re thinking of selling a quality property at any price level, think carefully about what selling houses is really all about – read again our articles in the last three editions of Eden Local – online at www.edenlocal.co.uk.
•Individual advice for individual clients with individual homes •Skilled advice on valuation, ‘the bigger picture’ and market conditions •Professional photography and unique brochures •Superb online marketing, reaching a local and national audience •Practical ongoing advice and sales review •Director-level negotiation to realise your value •In-house conveyancing and legal advice We are the only local estate agent who only sell houses. At the heart of it all, local knowledge and specialist great service to make you feel comfortable, confident and assured – all part of our ‘client first’ culture. Keith Wood This month we welcome local photographer and writer Keith Wood to the “Eden Local “ team. Keith is a professional outdoor photographer, specialising in landscape and heritage photography and has lived in Penrith for over 16 years. Whilst there are many areas of outstanding beauty within reach of Keith’s camera from the Yorkshire Dales to the Scottish Borders it is to The Lake District that Keith is most often drawn. Having completed a full round of “The Wainwrights” in 2007; all 214 fells described in “The Pictorial Guide to The Lake District” by Alfred Wainwright, he has an extensive library of all parts of the Lakes taken throughout the seasons. His work is regularly published in both local and national publications, several calendars annually and has had nine books of illustrated walks published in Halsgrove’s “Boot up” series of “leisure walks of discovery”; five titles covering walks in the Lake District and a further four titles covering the Yorkshire Dales. Additionally an Address Book of the Lake District using 50 of Keith’s most popular images is available. October 2010 saw his first coffee table style book published “The Yorkshire Dales in Winter” with 140 images of the Yorkshire Dales taken during the coldest winter for 30 years- plenty of pictures of snow and ice. Keith will be supplying images for the covers of Eden Local, together with helping on other photographic projects including working on our exciting new Route 66 project. To see more of Keith’s stunning images take a look at his website: www.keithwoodphotography.co.uk. You can get hold of Keith’s books from many local outlets or directly from himself.

In the last 2 years solar PV has emerged from the world of alternative technology to the world of mainstream building technology. Nearly all of us will know, or heard of someone who has had a solar PV system installed. Love Solar Ltd has been very much at the forefront of PV installation in the Eden District for the last 2 years, evolving from a one man operation to a fifteen person team and a major player in Cumbria’s evolving solar PV industry. In this interview we ask Ewen Estill the MD of Love Solar Ltd a number of questions about how he has found the last 2 years at the helm of a very successful PV installation company and where his vision lies for Love Solar Ltd and Solar PV technology in the future. How have the last 2 years been since the first Feed In Tariff (FIT) was announced? The uptake of PV has been fantastic, it did take about 6 months for word to get round about just how good the feed in tariff was. It almost appeared too good to be true for canny Cumbrians. After the first few customers took the leap and started to receive their FIT cheques from their electricity company, it EdenLocal
phone: 01768 899111
www.edenlocal.co.uk
took no time for the good word to spread and the trickle of work soon turned into a torrent. You can see by just driving around Penrith and Appleby how many people have embraced solar technology. We have all heard that the FIT has been cut back from 43p to 21p. How does this affect the viability of solar PV as an investment opportunity? Since the reduction in the FIT we have noticed an incredible reduction in the wholesale price of PV. The manufacturers have had to cut their prices. Love Solar Ltd has passed these price cuts directly to our customers. The payback period on a PV system is almost exactly what it was this time last year, within 10 years which is an approximate 10% Annual Return on Investment, this rate is still guaranteed for 23 years, index linked and tax free, you will be very hard pushed to find a better investment anywhere. The Government are proposing to drop the FIT in July to 13p per kWh. How will that affect the industry? It’s difficult to predict with all the changes being forced on the industry, hopefully the price of PV will keep dropping and the return will remain as good,
info@edenlocal.co.uk
EdenLocal • 17
although I believe the government want to bring the investment opportunity down to 5% in line with other investments. If anyone is thinking about a PV system for their property, I would advise they check out the viability of their property as soon as possible before the FITs drop again in July. How is the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) going to affect the PV industry? The current thinking is that all buildings will have to achieve an energy performance rating of grade D or above to receive a higher rate of FIT, this may prove tricky for a lot of older, stone built buildings without a cavity wall. Here at Love Solar Ltd, we are preparing for this new requirement by training our surveyors so they are qualified to carry out EPCs in addition to solar surveys. Do you feel bitter about how the industry is being treated by the Government? That’s governments, they can change policy with the stroke of a pen, they gave us the Feed In Tariff and they can take it away. What they have done has been proven to be illegal by two courts, it’s going to the Supreme Court; we anticipate it’ll be found illegal there too. We were prepared for the FIT to be reduced by the government, I just wish they had dropped it gradually and in the time frame originally published, this would have allowed the industry to adjust but continue to grow.
What is your vision for solar PV technology for the future? Prices will keep dropping as will the FIT incentives. Building regulations will change to make installed PV on new builds compulsory, PV will continue to become an ever increasing more main- stream technology. What is your vision for Love Solar? We have lots of ideas for the future, we will remain as a core PV installation company but we are likely to have more of a multi technology approach, offering a broader range of Ecological building solutions, enabling us to help customer achieve their Energy Performance Certificate rating. Watch this space.

Jacob, the next generation - Focus on farming
Jacob, the next generation Focus on farming
by Jacob Jackson & Lee Quinn Well, you send out a message that we want to write about farming and of course, it’s never a good time because everyone is so busy. We have, however, got some livestock articles now being put together. I have contemplated a number of ways to kick off a focus on local farming. My working with Neil Hodgson at Carleton Farm over the last year, writing about him and his family has opened my mind to the commitment, the hours and the returns not always guaranteed.
So I rang around. Not much point in emailing. And then I met Jacob Jackson aged 10. Jacob’s experience of farming isn’t from his dad Frank, who once specialised in beef and now spends many days in butchery and catering, but Jacob’s early days were as a toddler, running around, no fear with the lambs. At 06.30, he’s up, dressed and off to the field, where at the moment, he is in his second year of shepherding a flock of 54 that started out as 26, which from 5th March onwards will probably grow to nearer 150. Getting used to understanding a Yew (Ewe) and Tup (Ram) that’s me up to date, Jacob was quite confident whilst I first walked the 13 acre field, which is the family holding and discussed lambing as an exciting and busy time, whilst his younger brother, like he was once, toddled around EdenLocal
phone: 01768 899111
with the lambs. His grandfather was a sheep farmer and Jacob, who is already looking at getting some Belted Galloways, has his eye firmly on his future. He is an aspiration to his generation, like many kids who are so much in tune with the way it is and the way it has to be. We took shelter with mum and dad in the warmth of the kitchen not far from the field and discussed how hard it is being a young farmer, with big responsibilities. This was my first trip to meet Jacob. He was well aware of the whole sequence of events from 5 October when the tup was painted with a paddle and was let in with the yews 7 months ago almost to the day, which meant it would hopefully be a busy time now. We discussed the maintenance, the upkeep, the treatment, the
www.edenlocal.co.uk
info@edenlocal.co.uk
dosage, the potential diseases and how to treat foot rot. We discussed the dipping to shearing, I sat and I listened. Of course dad is the nightshift. He does the rounds at night, but the early mornings and evenings Monday to Friday are Jacob’s and of course the weekends. Before school they are his animals. After school and his homework, it was back to tending his animals, feeding that lamb in the pen and keeping an eye on the symptoms of those expectant mothers, the licking of the lips, the staring in the sky - oh yes, there are many signs. With help and assistance from mum and dad, Jacob is a future generation farmer. Like any child, it’s a choice. He is not silly - the PS3 and WII do feature, but the choice he generally makes is no contest – it’s outdoors, whatever the weather.

Do you play Golf? By Lee Quinn
Whilst I’ll never confess to being a writer, a golfer is something I have never been and until recently, I can honestly say that apart from the odd pitch and putt or crazy golf experience, I had only tried playing on an actual golf course twice in my life. For me, not playing golf is hidden behind a number of excuses such as not having the time, in that I couldn’t take 4 hours out, walking around a course any day in the week. Another excuse is having too many other commitments. For me, that includes fishing and football. Another excuse is a perception of the expense. There are of course those stalwart golfers who will say all the above is the reason why you should do it. The objective of this short article is to enlighten those of you who might be tempted to have a go. It’s about presenting to you a local facility in Redhills, Penrith. It started off as an idea by two brothers who came out of farming in 1990 and decided the grass could be greener on the other side all year round! For Martin and Tony Allinson, work commenced in February 1993 on an all weather golf driving range, which supported with a golf shop, opened the following August. With the first EdenLocal

phase of the facility completed during 1995 and 1996, work commenced on a 9 hole par 30 golf course, which opened in the late nineties, supported with a putting green. The question asked of Eden Local by Martin and Tony was how do we get more people to visit the site and have a go? I’m a firm believer that if I’m going to write a series of articles with the guys about their business and their passion, I would have to get out to Penrith Golf Centre & Driving Range and this first article is a bit about that experience. I took 2 hours out - an extended lunchtime to try out the driving range with my friend, John. John is a retired local businessman who found golf about 2 years ago. Like me, he never had the time before when working, but then one day, with so much time on

It’s a question prompted in many social circles and planned in to many corporate day calendars and fundraisers. It is recognised as having its own fashion and it has its own language, which includes wedge, wood, irons, eagles, clubs, pars, bogies, birdies, albatross’s, greens, fairways and the arts of teeing off, stroke play, match play and putting. The expression ‘in a bit of rough’ gets used as well!
his hands, he took it up and now enjoys a regular social with friends, outside clubbing a tiny ball around trying to get it in a hole! There is of course much more to it. Golf is described as a precision club and ball sport, in which competing players (or golfers) use many types of clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strokes. For my experience which was long overdue, I had 2 hours where I didn’t think about work and I wasn’t distracted by the sunny day which turned to sleet and snow. It was January and here I was, firstly having some practice at hitting the ball on the driving range, then I was on to the course. Does it sound simple because it was? I wasn’t wearing golf shoes with metal or plastic spikes, tartan plus-

fours and argyle socks with a cap that was large enough to double up as a helicopter landing pad. It was casual - trainers, jeans, everyday comfortable clothes and rain wear. Certain clubs have certain dress codes, but here at Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range, it opens its facilities, inviting a range of standards in play and dress code from novices to professionals and to people like me, out for that first time experience. For me it was about feeling comfortable in what you wear, not dressing to outdo or make a statement in brand names. As I found out, it was turn up and play on the day. I didn’t need clubs as they were available to hire with a trolley as part of the price. Greeted by both Martin and Tony who didn’t know I was coming, Tony very kindly took me out to the driving range so I could learn how to stand and hold a club and the biggest challenge was to hit the golf ball into oblivion. There was a basket of balls, an automated machine which you feed with balls that actually then presents them on a tee and a type of minute egg cup which the ball sits in, elevated off the ground so you can hit it. I
tried out several different types of club, started learning about how I would position my body and got to understand how the swing of the arm and what technique is required when the club connects with the ball, propelling it forward, one hopes. Importantly, I didn’t let go of the club and on just one occasion, everyone behind took cover for good reason! I have to confess that I really enjoyed it and I wondered why I hadn’t tried it before - a basket of 60 balls in about 20 minutes. No distractions, no worries, no timescales and a clear head out in the fresh air but under cover, learning the art of striking a ball to go short, mid and long distance, aiming for target nets, as well as trying to chip it into a barrel at 80100 yards away. I thought why not do it at least once a week during a lunch time, after work or even an early evening or a Saturday morning with my family. The driving range and the rest of the facilities are open every day of the week from 9am to 9pm (closed Christmas day). Now, before you start to think it’s all about beginners, don’t. The
facilities cover all levels and over the years since it was opened, Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range have attracted a number of professionals to be based with the club including PGA Professional, Paul Jenkinson. If you would like to have some professional coaching, Craig Goodfellow or Andrew Sowerby are at hand for one to one and group coaching. Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range is a facility which ticks all the boxes for the established golfer, for the beginner or for that person or group of people of whatever age that just want to get out more. Its pricing is within everyone’s budget and the only way to find out is to give it a go. Me - I’ll be back there long before this article comes out for my second session. The Kings Arms at Temple Sowerby 22 • EdenLocal

It’s another one of those articles I’ve written that had that ‘hold on a minute, what did you say?’ thought. It was mid way through 2010 that the Kings Arms at Temple Sowerby came to Eden Local to advertise on a regular basis. My thanks to Bekah, who is fortunate to have this as her local. I had to find out more. Only 5 minutes from Penrith, I didn’t just turn up with the family for a meal, we did the whole visitor, let’s be on holiday for one night only thing. I wanted to taste the good food, take in the hospitality and experience the newly refurbished accommodation which Bekah had told me about. Well, into the bar area or restaurant was our first decision. Seeing some local Tirrell Ale in the bar made me feel like I was in the right place to opt for the bar with the open fire blazing. The extensive menu spoilt us for choice. It was possibly the largest variation of cuisine I have seen and it included bar meals with local game and locally sourced produce, restaurant specialities, an A La Carte selection, dishes from around the world and of course the ever changing specials board. Bored of the same food? Not an option here The quality of the meal and the service was superb. They had an unbelievable selection presented beautifully, which catered easily for the younger and older taste buds, without just sticking to the usual kids menu. We have an in ‘betweenie’, you know, child’s menu too small, adult menu too big! Just ask would be my advice.
the origin of the food with Steve, the main man behind the menu and Caroline, the lady at the helm. Steve, without any doubt, is a seasoned chef who has travelled and experienced kitchens all around the world, which are now under one roof at the Kings Arms. While Steve is doing what he is best at Caroline encourages a relaxed informal ambience while maintaining professional standards. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for this team. She then explained about the walks around the Kings Arms and the Eden River fishing rights. I was hooked again! Of course I had to go back for a variation of river walks and fishing. I met up with Ben who works at the Inn, walked and shared further the secrets of this area. I really have to expose the walks that can be 40 minutes in wellies or up to 5 miles in walking boots at your pace. It can include fishing for the Eden Brown Trout, on a catch and release basis or a catch and then have cooked for basis. We have to preserve what we have here, so it’s not greedy, just a tasty one. A quiet walk in search of the wildlife, the otters or the kingfishers and there is a wise old owl en route! Spoilt for choice - a walk before lunch or after? A spot of fishing to catch tea or just somewhere to relax and unwind and take it all in? Even a water bowl for your four legged friend is ready for you in the bar. I dare say that if you call ahead, Steve and Caroline can prepare you the ideal picnic for the perfect afternoon. My thanks to the team at the Kings Arms and to Ben, who I will meet again. By Lee Quinn
Temple Sowerby is unquestionably a beautiful village, well past the transition of once being the busy A66. At some point, we will feature a profile of this traditional village and its community. In the bar that evening, it was evident that the Kings Arms had a local bond but also a potential secret for visitors. The accommodation was perfect for a family of four. It was very spacious and tastefully refurbished. It was a lovely evening and the next day, whilst the family made that trip all the way back to Penrith, I stayed to discuss EdenLocal

Melmerby © Joanne Caffrey
“The Jewel of Eden”
On entering the village you are greeted with the site of the magnificent village green, split in two by a meandering beck. In spring it is lined by Snow drops, crocus and Daffodil and in the summer months these are replaced by people who could not resist the temptation to stop and sit a while, be it for a rest before cycling up the 1900 feet to Hartside top, families picnicking or village children playing.
congregate at the Shepherds Inn and then walk , run, limp and hobble their way round up and along the 7.5 mile route up over Melmerby scar to the Maiden way and back down to be welcomed with a decent pint and a hot meal at the pub. Numbers are rising each year. Last year was 84, 14 of which ran the course, monies raised go to the upkeep and development of the village hall.
Melmerby is a very special place; it nestles under the Cross Fell range of the Northern Penines which at 2900 ft is the highest part of the whole Pennine back bone. Melmerby fell is a constant feast for the eye, as on no day does it look the same; cloud, sun, rain and snow throughout the year ensure that every day brings different colours and moods but the outlook is always beautiful.
Another asset to the village is its amazing village hall. Prince Charles opened this state of the art premises in February 2004. It regularly hosts high quality live music concerts from classical to rock, plays and talks. It is also the ideal venue for weddings and parties, having a newly installed catering kitchen, various anti rooms and a toddler’s playground.
At the very heart of the village is “the Shepherds Inn” which has been run by Ceri and Andy Webster for the last three years. You may notice a slight similarity in the name of the writer of this article and the Male half of the partnership, so you’ll probably think I’m being a bit biased! The menu changes seasonally and the specials boards change daily, all featuring fresh local produce. Another feature the Inn has is that on a Friday and Saturday night, while you wait for a table or your food you can be entertained by our in house close up magic team and be dazzled by card wizardry and sleight of hand. The magic is available on other nights by request. With the help of other villagers the pub is hoping to re establish the May festival this year, featuring Live music, bbq, Maypole dancing, tug o war, Welly wanging, Bale of hay tossing, stalls, side shows and much more. We are looking to hold it on 12th May 2012 so keep an eye on the press for further details as it will be a cracker of a day! The village already plays host to the “Melmerby Challenge” which is held every year between Christmas and New Year on 27th December. People EdenLocal

As well as the Christmas challenge this year Melmerby is playing host to an international uphill only fell race which will be a fantastic boost for the village with 100’s expected to take part. Again with the support of the rest of the village, the pub would like to turn the event into a Beer, music and food festival to run in conjunction with the race itself and make it a real event to remember and raise money for local charities.
One of the other highlights to mention is the Church of St John, a 13th Century building of red sandstone. Some of the windows, all of which are plain, may be as old as 600 years. Through the East window one can see Melmerby Fell on the North Pennines. On top of the tower, with its stepped turret, sits a weather vane in the shape of a cockerel. Little is known of the Church’s history before the 18th Century. The tower was built in 1848, and major restorations took place in 1895 and 1928.

01768 864759 Service your own car or use a local mechanic? • Milk your own cow or buy milk from a local shop? Rear your own sheep or rely on a local farmer? • Build your own extension or use a local builder? Prepare your own VAT return or use a local bookkeeper? Silly question, of course you need a book keeper – why you ask? Claire and Stephen Braithwaite find they save their clients money and let’s face it this is very important right now. They both have a background in accountancy practices and know exactly what your accountant needs. Bookkeeping is maintaining all records tidily and reconciled with bank/cash books etc and makes information much easier to find and analyse when preparing VAT returns or final accounts hence it takes your accountant less time.
Many people find it useful to have a bookkeeper as when information goes to the accountant at the year end there is less work to be done at this stage. Clients like the Braithwaite’s to prepare their VAT returns as the penalties for being late can be quite severe and having a bookkeeper takes away all the stress. Braithwaite Bookkeeping caters for all, sole traders, partnerships or small limited companies.  Anyone who needs a hand with bookkeeping or VAT returns!  And use Sage bookkeeping software, excel spreadsheets or even just a hand written cash book, whatever you require.

Bowscale Tarn Peaks and Pathways by Nick Wells
This walk is a decent family walk of about 3 miles in all. I did not want to go too far from home this time, so I chose Bowscale Tarn. The walk starts off at Bowscale, about one mile north of Mungrisedale. It was a very popular walk in Victorian times and is supposed to be one of the most beautiful Tarns in the Lake district.
After about 40 minutes of walking up a slight incline you come to the Tarn surrounded by a high ridge. Such a short walk to reach such a beautiful place. It was dead calm, so the surface was like glass which created some amazing reflections. There is a very large rock on the Tarn edge which must have been a seat for many over years gone by.
After a bite to eat, I decided to off road it up the side of the basin like ridge to take some photos, then I went to the back of the tarn over a low ridge and rejoined the well worn path back down to Bowscale. If anyone would like to suggest a walk, please email me at sandwellfurn@aol.com

Jane’s Dream By Lee Quinn
Dalemain Estate has been in the Hasell family since 1679 and is made up of the Mansion House, Home Farm, the Deer Park, Dacre Castle and several tenanted farms. The estate primarily keeps Swaledale sheep on the land but also some cattle and of course red deer in the park and roe deer in Martindale. Whilst I have visited the Estate with my family over the years supporting various events, I have finally got to put together a short story that incorporates tradition with innovation, creates what is sometimes described as a work of art. They host an international competition that is gathering momentum and it’s something that everyone can be involved in and enjoy. This article was inspired by the World Marmalade Festival & Awards, which I attended with my family recently and which has been held every
February at the Dalemain Mansion since 2005. I was intrigued to know more and learn about how and why it started and where the competition, that is a world stage that harnesses a kitchen, family and business tradition, is going. It has established itself as a breakfast must for hundreds of years. It was time to talk marmalade with Jane Hasell-McCosh who had a dream and made it real. My opening questions to Jane started at the very beginning as Jane recalled that from as early 4 years old, she watched and then as a very young child made marmalade in the Kitchen with her mum. Marmalade making is something that Jane has always seen as a happy experience from her childhood and one that through her life, has always been constant. Breakfast wouldn’t be breakfast without it and Jane describes the gift of marmalade as something very special. I pondered on this thought as I do like marmalade, but probably not us much as Jane I think! Walking through the house shortly after the Festival, it’s a Paddington heaven as you are surrounded by over 1700 jars of marmalade. It’s wall to wall covering every available table top. Receiving a gift of homemade or traditional handmade marmalade is very special. It’s a taste, a colour, a texture. It’s also a presentation in a jar of someone’s hard work. It can be made by a beginner, a seasoned and established artisan professional or a phone: 01768 899111
producer. It can be made as a hobby, as a regular household task or made as a personal product for sale. It can be made by a child, a gran or a mam, made at farm or at a B & B. It can also be made by a politician or someone like you and me. As the sunlight shone through the window at the Mansion, it created a rainbow of every shade that the colour orange could produce. Beams of amber were thrown across the wall. It’s character in a jar! It’s also impressive to note that the amateur competition entry at the first festival was 60 and now it’s over a thousand. You find yourself not just surrounded by marmalade, but by jars from families and individuals in taste and looks. The dream continues for Jane. It has no boundaries when it comes to marmalade. This year, she introduced from the kitchens of Dalemain, two marmalades made from two family recipes dating back to the 17th century and the Victorian era. It was my first meeting with Jane and with such a shared passion for marmalade, I do believe Eden Local will be looking forward to spreading this word. Eden Local to your door with a little help from our friends.... by Sam Eggleston
When a business has been established for 352 years, I think it can be said that it can be taken for granted. That said, understanding that business can be hugely fascinating. Because we rely on Royal Mail for you to enjoy Eden Local, and lets face it what an amazing job they do, we wanted to get a bit of a behind the scene’s look at their workplace.
last few years – package deliveries grew by 11% last Christmas alone. When I took a look at the time line – there was a few oh yeah’s that I expressed remembering things depicted in front of me, but more importantly I saw the pictures of the trolleys that are now used – what a piece of kit, well they are a relatively new introduction
I met with Ian Raffel the DOM (Delivery Office Manager) at Penrith in February to get a feel of this National business, with such a Local presence. The first thing we discussed was current training that was being delivered to the Penrith team. A lot happens in 352 years, as part of a employee training the Royal Mail recently embarked or refreshing its history with its employees. I got to view a enormous wall chart about 30ft long, which plotted the history of Royal Mail and sequence these with events around the country. In many ways it was the start of many key ways we started communication, within and outside of our communities. The internet was thought to be a thorn in the side of Royal Mail when it’s popularity first grew, but actually it has increased the business and continues to do so. Email will never replace the feeling you get when you receive a handwritten note, which is hand delivered. It is plain to see that internet shopping and the popularity of sites like ebay are to thank for the massive increase in parcel deliveries over the EdenLocal

and 3 different types are used. The days of a postie carrying an overweight shoulder bag are gone. Did you know one of the trolleys is motorised to cope with the hills? Each trolley has a different weight differential, the value in using them is two fold, it is better for the health of the delivery person and more mail can be moved around by one person which has a real impact on the carbon foot print of Royal Mail. Reducing the carbon foot print is important to the business and an on going project, the new process soon to be introduced is the concept of sending two people one van. The picture on the right show’s clearly how this works. The reality was, when we had two royal mail deliveries a day any one delivery point could in fact be hand delivered to 5 times, 1st delivery, priority vehicle dealing with special deliveries, packages and parcels by van, 2nd delivery and even parcel force. The two people one
van delivery process allows heavier items such as packages and parcels to be delivered in one visit, this will make a massive impact on the carbon reduction. The fact is come hail, rain or shine the team of 73 at the Penrith Delivery Office will guarantee that you get your mail – and please remember that this team of people deliver to some pretty rural places, travelling through 2 or 3 fields just to ensure that the mail is hand delivered everyday. The Penrith Delivery Office centre has approximately 17,000 delivery points every day, which covers the CA10 and CA11 postcodes, centred around the sorting office built back in the 1960’s. It has 638 collection visits every day and operates from 5.30am – 8pm. For a town postie they will only spend 3.5 hrs of their day actually delivering mail the rest is all in the preparation and sorting that is part of the process. A rural postman can be out delivering for up to 6 hours.
People rarely leave the Royal Mail Penrith office, Ian himself has worked for Royal Mail for 32 years, and most of the team have lengthy service records. Ask yourself this – will the gas man show to day – well you hope, will the sky be blue today – well we hope but there are no guarantees. Will next months Eden Local be delivered through my door – well yes Royal Mail can guarantee it.

And Finally...... This is the time of year when we start to feel more alive. The lighter nights are here and we have more energy, which is just as well for the Eden Local team because from the May issue, we will be producing two magazines every month. It is really quite exciting! The monthly distribution has grown by a whopping 16,000 to 22,000 in only 18 months.

What’s in store next month I hear you ask? Well, we will be focusing on another village - Greystoke this time. Our thanks go to Andy from the Shepherds Inn for the Melmerby article. If you would like to see your village in focus and want to try your hand at writing, then please email me at sam@edenlocal.co.uk - we would love to hear from you. Next month, as we enjoy more bank holidays, we will be talking about all things Jubilee. We would like to create a list of events happening in Eden, so please email them to us and we will list them in the May edition. The gig guide and events guide is coming, so again please get in touch with all the details. Recruitment – what do you think? Can we help you? Are you recruiting or are you looking for a job? The key is that it will be affordable to advertise yourself or your company. Email us at info@edenlocal.co.uk or call the number below to discuss what we can offer. You may remember last month that we had a shout out for places providing products and meals for those on a Gluten free diet well here they are, If you want to add your company to the list please get in touch and we will re run later in the year. Enjoy the bank holidays everyone hope you get time to relax with the people you love. Sam Eggleston
