Eden Local Exciting times ahead is the simple phrase I will use to start my welcome to you for this 83rd Cumbrian based, Eden Local publication. Celebrating a time when 9 years ago I started working on my first publication, I realised only this week that the August Eden Local is the 101st publication we have produced since the company was launched. Off we go into August. We have had some summer weather. I checked back on the weather this time last year! We had a brief spell of summer from 5th to 7th July, so safe to say, this year has been much better. Let’s hope it continues. This time last year we were also getting excited about the Tour of Britain. From August through to September, we are not short of sport with the Olympics in Rio, the seasonal sports kicking off across the region and the country. Importantly, we must remember it’s advertising that puts your Eden Local through your door and I am pleased to welcome some more new advertisers. We have three this month with N and R Landscapes, The Bespoke Home and McCarthy and Stone. I’m keeping this introduction short as advised by my new work colleague Nigel Peacock, who has now just started at Eden FM Radio in the new Business Administration role, so hopefully he’ll be putting some lines together as he settles into the day to day running of Eden FM at Mostyn Hall. A welcome and good luck to Nigel, who will also have some crossover with the publication in the near future. Well, I started with the word exciting, because once September arrives there will be a lot of new exciting projects rolling out via Cumbrian Local Publications and Eden FM Radio. The three sets of Top Trumps cards I am working on with Keith Wood, who some of you may remember wrote many walking articles for the Eden and Lakes Local publication back in 2012, is helping to co-ordinate the project. More about this on pages 26 and 27. I do know much of my time from the beginning of September to mid-October will be spent on this project. Have a great late summer and I’ll be back early autumn. Lee Booking in deadline for advertising in the September publication is 20th August

My Tanzania Adventure by Emily Quinn

JULY 2016 - Dar es Salaam, Bagomoyo, Mikumi and Zanzibar all in 21 days! I’ve just got back from Tanzania and I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped and supported me in getting to Tanzania. It was the most amazing experience to date and truly life changing. I feel like the trip helped me really grow as a person and make me a much more confident, rounded individual. I spent time with some amazing young ladies at Bethsaida Orphanage and heard some truly inspirational stories from girls who’ve had very bad starts in life. I spent a lot of time learning about their day to day busy lives and how hard it is for them. I also learnt a lot about their culture and Swahili which is their first language. It was a very heart warming experience and I and all my fellow students made connections with the girls and really got to know them. As well as spending time with some wonderful young ladies at

the orphanage, we also spent time with children and young adults at Neamjema School and Asante Sana for Education. Much like the orphanage, I felt like I got to learn a lot about people’s beliefs and their cultures. The standard in which people were talking English was really impressive and it made us all feel a lot more relaxed. The adventure enabled us to have a real reality check and really made us all just so much more appreciative of what we have. As well as helping and teaching people about our way of life and the lessons we do in England, we also had time for fun. We travelled to Mikumi for the most amazing safari experience. It was AMAZING! The drivers were lovely and they made all the difference to the trip. After making loads of friends with all the young people we’d met, to be able to put our feet up and just let the safari drivers take control, was a really lovely way to finish the trip.

So as a summary to this amazing adventure, I met some wonderful, unforgettable people and had the best time of my life. And I hope that one day I’ll be able to go back again. Thanks again to everyone who made it possible, to all the businesses, friends and colleagues. You all have my undying gratitude. Also a massive thank you to all the teachers who supported us on the trip and kept us going as we had very long days and it was rather exhausting! Last but not least, thank you to my family and boyfriend who were very supportive running up to the trip and helped me with everything from jabs and deet (insect repellent) to flip flops and t-shirts! Those of you who know me, know I’m not the most organised of people and I honestly could not have done it without them; so thank you. Emily x

Get your free central heating installed before winter!

Eden District Council is continuing to help those without full central heating to get it installed in their homes. This local scheme, which is being administered by Allerdale Borough Council, could pay for the installation of a full central heating system. This would either be a gas system including the connection to the gas main or, if this isn’t technically or economically feasible, an oil-fuelled system. This full central heating system is free to eligible customers on a first come, first served basis. To be eligible, customers have to meet certain criteria. They must be either in receipt of certain benefits, or have a total annual household income of less than £15,600 and live in a property built before 1920. Other households can qualify because they spend a disproportionate amount of their income on their energy bills. The property must not already have a gas main connection or an existing central heating system fuelled by oil or LPG. Electrically heated homes or those with a solid fuel back boiler and a partial central heating system may also qualify. Further details of all qualifying criteria are available from the Council.

EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

Eden District Council joined forces with Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council and South Lakeland District Council to bid for funding from the government’s £25m Central Heating Fund. This successful bid has provided £1.14m, to be split across the four districts helping local people heat their homes. The Councils are working in partnership with npower who will be providing further funding and installing the central heating systems. Northern Gas Networks / National Grid Gas will be funding and installing the gas mains. As the funding is limited, customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Councillor Lesley Grisedale, Eden District Council’s Housing and Health Portfolio Holder said: “This is a really exciting scheme and is helping out those most in need – the fuel poor. There has already been a lot of interest in the scheme and I would encourage everyone who is eligible to get their application forms in now, before the funding runs out.” Trevor Yeoman from npower said: “We’re delighted to be working with Allerdale Borough Council and their partners to help low income residents living in hard to heat homes. Installing a new central heating system can make a real difference to people’s lives, helping them to stay warm and reduce their heating bills”. For full details of the scheme, see if you are eligible, and to request application forms, please call the Housing Team on 01768 212490 or email: housing. services@eden.gov.uk or visit www.eden.gov.uk/ cumbriacentralheatingfund

Eden107.5 The reality that is radio by Lee Quinn

Whilst every month since November 2010, I have written many articles, across several magazines about the project that is your local community radio station Eden FM, this might possibly be the last in this style of stories. In the week that I started writing this month’s Eden Local, we learnt that another community radio station, a close neighbour Radio Teesdale, based just down the A66 at Barnard Castle, switched off its transmitter after presenting its final show after 13 years of community radio via its two transmission sites in Barnard Castle and in the Teesdale Valley. The reason for radio Teesdale’s closure was purely that it lost its struggle to raise enough funds to stay on air. Two years ago, Indigo Radio in Kirkby Lonsdale closed. Well I have banged many a drum on the needs of the community radio and in my experience, which whilst only 10 years, I can tell you that the struggle across the UK is shared. At the end of July 2016, about 303 community radio licences have been award to date. There are about 242 on air, 23 yet to launch, 21 have closed and the details of about 17 are yet to surface. These figures are changing all the time. For Eden FM it is about looking forward; it is not just about selling advertising but this is what we do offer for those that thought they couldn’t advertise. Dana Curry House in Great Dockray has just booked a three month package which means they’ll be heard on Eden FM every day, they will have a social media package, web links and appear as a supporter of Eden FM in the Eden Local. You’ll hear more about ‘Dana’s delivering dinner to your door’ campaign very soon. Worldwide Travel, your local independent travel agent at 4 Bowling Green Lane, New Squares, Penrith with branches in Carlisle and one recently opened Maryport, is a seasoned supporter of Eden FM. They have an advert played at least six times a day, with other promos throughout the week aired. Their own 2 hour Worldwide Travel show on Thursday 2pm to 4 pm, features ten holiday offers, their services, products and advice. As these offers are announced, they pop up on Facebook and Twitter. They also have a dedicated page on the Eden FM website. The show is repeated from 10am to 12pm on Saturday morning. Continued on page 20

September By Pam Waggott

September is named from the old Roman word septem as it was the seventh month of the Roman calendar. The Anglo-Saxons called it ‘Gerst Monath’ which meant Barley Month as it was the time of year when barley was harvested to produce their favourite tipple – Barley brew. They also called it Haefest monath or Harvest month and that tradition continues today as the harvest is celebrated in churches and schools all over the country. The harvest has been celebrated since pagan times though traditionally the 24th September was the day that the harvesting of crops began in Medieval England. The link to the past remains as Harvest Festival services are often held on or near the Sunday of the Harvest Moon which is the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumn Equinox. As a celebration of thanks for the harvest, items are brought to the church to mark the occasion with fresh fruit and vegetables, grocery items and flowers which are later distributed to good causes. In some churches a bread sheaf is still made to make the centre piece of the display of food. The harvest festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the harvest season in August when it EdenLocal

was called Lammas or Loaf Mass. The new wheat crop was used to make loaves of bread which were then used in the communion service. At the beginning of the harvest rural communities would appoint a respected man in the village as the Lord of the Harvest and he would oversee the field workers and negotiate the wages for those bringing the harvest home. The harvest supper was eaten on Michaelmas Day with the Lord of the Harvest at the head of the table as a goose stuffed with apples was served alongside fresh vegetables harvested from the farms and gardens of the villages. The current form of the Harvest Festival was introduced in the 19th Century and Victorian hymns such as ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ and ‘All things bright

Before those Autumn leaves start falling

and beautiful’ popularised the custom and churches were filled with home grown produce and flowers – including Michaelmas daisies. Another pagan custom which is still evident at country shows and as a hobby now was the making of Corn Dollies; plaited shapes ranging from the simple to the complex. These were made from the last sheaf of corn cut and as the spirit of the corn was said to live in the plaited straw the corn doll was kept until the following spring to ensure the newly sown seed would bring a plentiful harvest. Although the mechanisation of the harvest resulted in the tradition largely dying out it continues as a hobby and revived country skill today with different regions having their own specific designs.

Come in and look at the latest in heating your home with a natural flame this winter

Michaelmas Day is the day of St Michael the Archangel and is celebrated on 29th September. He was the angel who threw the angel Lucifer (the devil) out of heaven because of his treachery. Michaelmas Day was also an indicator that winter was on the way as the winter night time curfew began. This was the striking of the church bells – one strike for each of the days of the month that had passed in the current year and indicated that household fires should be put out; the bells tolled every day except Sundays until Shrove Tuesday at the beginning of Lent. ...and returning to the story of St Michael did you know that it is considered unlucky to pick brambles after Michaelmas as it is believed that the devil has spat on them! As St Michael threw the angel Lucifer out of heaven he landed in a bramble bush and cursed the prickles, burning them with his breath and spitting on them, so poisoning them for ever. Legend has it that the curse is renewed every St Michaelmas day...you have been warned! More ramblings next month when we look at October and more quirky facts and folklore!

Where is Home? A song moved me to tears recently. I heard it at ‘Music on the Marr’, a wonderful folk festival in Castle Carrock, where we spent most of the first weekend of the school holidays. The song, called ‘Home’, described the true and heart-wrenching story of a young mother in the 1930s. Recently widowed with two children aged 1 and 3, she was returning to her native Scotland from China where she and her husband had been missionaries, and where he had died. Reflecting on the question ‘where is home?’, the woman in the song asked: is my home back in China where we lived together? Or is it in Scotland where we came from? Where do I belong? ‘Where is home?’ ‘Where is home?’ That’s a question all of us can ponder now and again, whether we’ve never moved from the house in which we were born, or whether we’ve spent our days travelling, moving home and re-settling. For what moved me about this song was is reminded me that ‘home’ is less about physical belonging and more about love and compassion.

adult life on the road, travelling through this part of England, preaching and reaching out to all who would listen about the question ‘where is home?’. He may not have posed the question in this way. But Fox’s firm belief was that if we dwell, or live in faith, then our home is wherever we rest and meet, in silence, with God. And God’s home is not in buildings, but in the hearts of all people. It was no coincidence then that where he and others Quakers met to worship God was in each other’s homes, and that Quaker places of worship became called ‘Meeting Houses’. We do not, he believed, need special buildings, or even priests and pulpits, to worship God. What we need to be ‘at home’ in faith is compassion, love, good friends, and silence. And there we will find God and God will find us. There’s nothing like a good, local folk festival to remind us of these universal themes of identity, belonging and how loving compassion can help us find our way home. Does your conservatory need a

professional CLEAN?

A complete, affordable interior and/or exterior conservatory cleaning service using specialist access and cleaning equipment that will leave your conservatory looking like new. A CONSERVATORY is an excellent investment, increasing the value far above its cost and when looked after properly, it will last for years. But, if it isn’t cleaned properly, there could be problems – and that’s where ConserVClean* comes in. Michael McFarlane could not find anyone to clean his own conservatory, so he started up ConserVClean which has been growing ever since. Most work has come via customer recommendations. The company is fully insured and uses specialist cleaning and roof access equipment. The system can extend the life of a conservatory and also helps to prevent potential leaks and algae growth. “Conservatories cost on average about the same price as a family car”, says Michael. “Proud car owners wash and wax their vehicles and send hundreds of pounds a year maintaining them. But, you only keep a car two or three years, and you lose money on it.” “A conservatory costs thousands too, but it will last a lot longer than a car, and it’s an excellent investment if it is properly maintained. It’s only common sense to keep it properly cleaned.” “Wet weather and bird muck can contribute to the decay of a conservatory. If conservatories are not maintained, they will become dirty and green algae forms, possibly feeding on the rubber seals”, says Michael. “Algae can grow within key joints which if left untreated may leak and the value of the conservatory may fall unless expensive repairs are performed. This need not happen if the conservatory is regularly cleaned.”

Powerwashers and normal cleaning brushes can damage seals and scratch poylcarbonated roofs, making good homes for dirt. For a fraction of the cost of maintaining a car, ConserVClean will increase the looks, reduce problems and prolong the life of your conservatory. Trying to sell your house? Writing this article on the 31st July, I am looking at a group of 100 Swifts in the sky above Thacka and Townhead in Penrith, catching insects, and forming screaming parties flying low around the houses at immense speed, their brown scythe-like wings glinting in the setting sunlight. The Swifts will be leaving us during August, migrating back to their African home and food supply. Reed Bunting and Sedge Warbler have done

particularly well at Thacka this year, with at least 4 pairs of each respective species successfully fledging youngsters. Dragonflies, Darters, Moths and Butterflies are active around the reserve - some of the colours of these insect species are staggering. I really need to buy a good book to learn how to identify them! A Peregrine Falcon was seen over the northern end of Penrith on 4 consecutive days during the second

week of July. It’s always great to see nature’s ultimate hunting machine over the town. August will see Goldfinches starting to re-form their post-breeding flocks. Listen out for them calling, whilst watching the birds feed on the thistle heads growing around the main footpath. The collective noun for a group of Goldfinches is a ‘charm’, which I am sure you will agree with when you hear their musical jingling calls!

Alfred Wainwright and Ullswater The recently-created walk, the Ullswater Way, a 20mile walk around Ullswater provides an opportunity to remind readers of Alfred Wainwright’s love of this area of Lakeland.

of my first guidebook to the fells: an order for six was repeated within a week, a cause of much inward rejoicing and relief since I had incurred a debt of £900 with a local printer.’

Alfred Wainwright’s association with the Ullswater valley began on his first visit to the Lake District in 1930 and continued for the rest of his life. Aged 23, he came on a week’s holiday with his cousin at Whitsuntide 1930. They spent the first night in Windermere and the next day they walked along the old Roman road of High Street descending to Ullswater at Howtown and continued on to Pooley Bridge.

In the 1970s, he devised the Coast to Coast Walk from St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay. The route through the Lake District included a visit to Patterdale and he wrote: ‘Patterdale is a rival to Borrowdale in the magnificence of its surroundings. Dominated on one side by … Helvellyn and on the other by the steep flanks of Place Fell, with, between them, that loveliest of lakes, Ullswater, curving gracefully into the distance …’

In 1952, Wainwright began work on the first of his Pictorial Guides, The Eastern Fells, followed in 1954 with The Far Eastern Fells. Both these guides involved many visits to Patterdale and Glenridding. In both guides Wainwright extolled the virtues of the views of Ullswater from the surrounding fells. Ullswater was a favourite subject for his sketches and he included a number in the first two Pictorial Guides.

He loved Ullswater and declared in his final book that Ullswater was ‘the most beautiful of the lakes.’ He particularly loved the lakeside walk from Sandwick to Patterdale writing in The Far Eastern Fells: ‘It is the author’s opinion that the Lakeside path from Scalehow Beck, near Sandwick, to Patterdale (in that direction) is the most beautiful and rewarding walk in Lakeland.’

Patterdale post office was the first place he sold his books and in 1955 he took copies of his newlypublished book, The Eastern Fells to the shop and asked the then owner, Mr Dawson, if he would be willing to sell the book. In Wainwright in the Valleys of Lakeland, he wrote: ‘I have a soft spot for the post office, this being the first shop to offer to sell copies

OF CUMBRIA From the first introduction in last month’s Eden Local, it’s been an amazing response. Orders already being placed; businesses, societies, groups, trusts, charities and individuals coming forward to assist in this project, getting behind it and supporting it in a number of ways. The interest has been so great, that as a small team here in Cumbria and even with the design team at Top Trumps, the first drafts of design have already been started with some sample ideas. The more people that know, the interest at this stage means that the original thought of a first order of 5,000 has been increased to 10,000. Whilst there are going to be three sets of the Cumbria Top Trumps cards, they will be a limited edition and once they are gone, they are gone.

ANOB (Area Of Outstanding Beauty) and several Trusts related to the theme and the content of those 30 cards. How many mountains are there in Cumbria? How many rivers? How many lakes? Yes, the favourite answer for the Lakes being ‘one’ Bassenthwaite as the rest are waters. A few people might have a few words to say on this; Ullswater, Wastwater, Brothers Water, I’m getting this, then there’s Lake Windermere and Buttermere? But then outside, looking in on a search, Grasmere on two of the top visitor websites; on one it is Grasmere (lake) and on the other it’s Grasmere Water. Yes it’s confusing, but something we’ll possibly all agree is that the Lake District is a preferred option to the

This project has never been done. It is unique, but with the first set of cards now being drafted, the need for your input is paramount. The first set of Cumbrian Top Trumps cards is to be called ‘Giants of Cumbria’. On the team with me, co-ordinating design with the Top Trumps team is Keith Wood, photographer and writer. I have also called on the help of people across the West Coast, the Eden Valley, the Lake District National Park, The Pennines EdenLocal

Water District? We are blessed with a beautiful landscape ‘The Giants of Cumbria’ set of Top Trump cards will feature. We anticipate 15 to 18 mountains, 7 to 10 lakes and 5 to 7 rivers to establish the top ‘Giants’ for the Giants of Cumbria. We need you to tell us your top 10 mountains, your top 5 Lakes and your top 5 rivers. Can you help? All will be revealed in October, because that is when the first set of Cumbria’s Top Trumps cards goes into production. The heights of the giants, the depths of those waters, your ranking of your top choices, the volumes and masses of these giants, maybe the walks at these locations?

To produce each set of cards is a cost and this will be raised commercially to get into print and over 500 outlets across Cumbria and 40 on the areas bordering the region will be selling the cards. Every card in every pack will have a sponsor of some description. This could be a business, an individual, it could even be your town or village that is close to the landmarks selected.

There so many wonderful locations, so much history, so many places and important people that make Cumbria the wonder place it is. The follow on set of Cumbria Top Trumps, also in design is ‘People and Places’ and the final set well, I’ll give you a clue; it’s a Top 30 and in the drafted set, not yet set in stone, subject to what is voted having an influence, we have Herdwicks, Red Squirrels and Cumberland Sausage, so what are the top things about Cumbria you would like to share? We would like you to help name the cards. ;; Send in your top 10 mountains, 5 lakes and top 5 rivers. ;; Send in your top 10 places - old, current or new and top 10 people of Cumbria. ;; Send in your top 10 things – objects, those things that mean Cumbria. Send your entries in to lee@cumbrianlocal.co.uk. There will be a draw for all those that get the Top Five for each set correct. We are yet to name the third Cumbria set of Top Trumps cards and as an idea we would like some ideas. Can you think of one, two or three words that describe what Cumbria is to you, but something that could be exciting, quirky but drive home what Cumbria’s about. Will it be the ‘Do you Know Cumbria’ set? What about Cumbria as we know it? In a simple phrase ‘Made in Cumbria’, but ‘Only in Cumbria!’ might just be the one.

Bonny Blues update By Karl Collinson

The Bonny Blues have enjoyed a very busy pre season campaign with some very encouraging performances.

We start the 16/17 campaign with a F.A. Cup extra preliminary round match at home to Sunderland RCA on Saturday 6th August and our league campaign kicks off on Wednesday 10th away to Newcastle Benfield.

The squad is full of quality and with manager, Matt Henney, regularly being able to pick from 16+ players, there's a healthy competition for places.

Off the pitch we've managed to get a lot of work on the pitch to get it looking premier league standard and with numerous improvements around Frenchfield Park, we're all set for the big kick off.

We've enjoyed comprehensive victories against Carlisle City, Milnthorpe Corinthians and Windscale with giving Carlisle United and Workington Reds a very competitive match.

Andrew Kidd ups the stakes with the

2017 model Toyota Hilux Invincible The designers of the new Hilux, particularly in “Invincible” guise as tested here, are therefore to be congratulated on passing their cojones test with flying colours! At first glance, this seventeenand-a-half foot long wonder of technical wizardry may look similar to its predecessor, but be assured, this is an all new design which has upped the stakes in terms of structural integrity (a 20% more rigid frame with 20 years corrosion resistance), a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes, and a new 150hp 2.4 litre D-4D turbodiesel.

Every now and again, car manufacturers launch an entirely new version of a trusty and well-established best seller. There must be a huge temptation to merely update here and there, tweak this or that, and avoid the potentially huge financial risk of inflicting an automotive ‘lemon’ on the unsuspecting public.

EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

With a choice of four Hilux grades from ‘Active’ to ‘Invincible X’, you can choose the features which are just right for your needs and your budget. The new Hilux is available in Single, Extra and Double cab configurations.

EdenLocal • 31

Whilst six speed automatic transmission is available on ‘Icon’ grades and upward, the provision of a new 6-speed manual gearbox across the range is hugely welcome, and is responsible for better economy and quieter running. I’m pleased to confirm that the new Hilux will take motorway work in it’s stride, with the new 2.4 litre diesel doing only 1,700rpm at 70mph in sixth gear. There’s further provision to switch from ‘Economy’ to ‘Power’ mode whilst on the move, enabling the use of a massive 400Nm of torque

when required. That, together with an array of audio/ entertainment options topped off with a tasteful sweeping binnacle, makes this an extremely viable alternative to having to use a more traditional vehicle for long journeys. And just to underline all this, fit and finish are first class, with stylish yet durable seats both front and back. Sitting on 18” Alloy wheels, the Invincible certainly looks an imposing vehicle, having chrome side bars with steps, privacy glass, headlamp cleaners, Bluetooth, self-levelling LED headlights, chrome handles and detailing of a high standard. Auto air conditioning, Smart entry and start, leather covered steering wheel, gear shift and handbrake, rear view camera, front cool box; the list goes on. Many of the best bits of this Hilux aren’t on show, of course. High-tech driver aids such as ABS, EBD, vehicle stability control, hill start assist control, trailer sway control (yes, really), downhill assist control, cruise control.

With the 2017 model range starting at around £18,900, there should be plenty to talk about when you can have a natter with the guys at Jim Walton (Penrith) Ltd. 01768 864555.
