Welcome to the August edition of your Eden Local Welcome to your August edition of Eden Local. For those regular readers, you would have noticed that I always pass a comment on the previous month, usually along the lines of ‘I have been busy’ and sometimes like last month’s opening editorial, I mention the tasks ahead in the next month. I have spent a lot of my time in the week leading up to print on one of my main articles in this issue of Eden Local. With the unpredictable weather, the rain has caused more problems at the Wetheriggs Country Park in Penrith. This story has also been press released. The article has been put together by local residents and councillors living in Wetheriggs. It’s one really close to home for me as I use the park at least once a day for walking my dog. I have chosen to put this article in because awareness needs to be raised of the situation for all users, residents and visitors. I have also set up a Wetheriggs Facebook page as this article details just one of a number of issues that residents are trying to tackle that are ongoing on the estate. The full story is on pages 8 to 10. If you have a problem in your town or your village in Eden and require more than just a press release, please drop me a line if you think sharing your problem could help you. So here we are entering into the height of the holiday season. Whether we are at home, going away or we’ve just arrived back or even if you’re not actually having a holiday, to brighten your day, as he always brightens up mine, is an
article on pages 12 and 13. The article is simply about a man called Dimitrios and his wife Panogiota. It’s a mouth watering experience. Wannasee returns to Hutton in the Forest for the bank holiday weekend thanks to John Brannan for the update on the centre pages. I might see you there as I’ll be taking some time out, but I’ll probably have one hand on my camera and another on the mic. No I won’t be singing but maybe broadcasting! Lots of writers have been involved this month. I counted 15 and possibly 8 photographers. My thanks to all those who have helped. In the week we were preparing for print, I was also out with Eden FM and Eden District Council representatives at Penrith Building Supplies. The full story which is on pages 20 and 21, is about the Building Control surgery that took place on 25th July and which also included raising money for a very good cause. There are a few featured this month. Building on our article last month, ‘Ticking all the boxes and saving lives’ about the Defibrillator strategy by Community Heartbeat Trusts (CHT), this month I met with Harry King and John Poland to discuss the strategy linked to the CHT that they are working on as the Court Thorn Practice Patient Participation Group north of Penrith in Low Hesket. This update is on pages 22 and 23. As I mentioned last month, Eden Local and Eden FM will be supporting the project across Eden, so it looks like there will be some more dates to add in to the Eden FM tour

on the road. It’s been the busiest year I can remember for outside broadcasts. There is an update on page 24 and please if you get the time, have a look at the new Eden FM website, www.edenfm.co.uk. Last month Joan Robinson, who heads up the Penrith Community Gardening Group of volunteers featured bees, including a bee hotel in her ‘Out & About’ article. Well this month, you’ll be finding out about making a worm café on pages 26 and 27. As I finished last month’s Eden Local, I went straight on to producing a new look Penrith AFC match day Programme for the Penrith v Carlisle United match. Well this is pretty much what I’ll be doing as this Eden Local goes off to print. Booths takes International Cheese Awards by storm, winning 16 gold medals Booths has taken the International Cheese Awards by storm, winning a total of 16 gold medals. The family owned food and drink retailer, which specialises in showcasing the finest local and regional foods, performed fantastically in the International Cheese Awards, which are one of the world’s most respected of their kind. Amongst the 16 gold medallists were 8 of Booths own branded cheeses and dairy products, including Booths Lancashire Crumbly Cheese, Booths Grana Padano and Booths Clotted Cream with Brandy. Booths recently redeveloped its whole own label cheese range, working with the finest producers in the UK and Europe to develop them. Other gold medallists included an unpasteurised Gruyère and a Papillion Roquefort. Booths Dairy Buyer Alan Kirby said “Booths has a reputation for selling fine cheese, and we have laid a great foundation by stocking the very best from our regions in Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire and Cheshire. We have some highly skilled cheesemakers here in the North and throughout the UK who make fantastic cheeses ensuring that they reach us at their optimum maturity. Add to that our exceptional cheeses from around the world, many with PDO status, and you have a winning combination!” “Booths also has a fantastic team of welltrained cheese counter staff, who ensure they are knowledgeable and passionate about our excellent range of cheeses. Our counter teams are there to point cheese lovers in the direction of old favourites and introduce them to new ones. Keep a look out in store for our 16 gold medallists and be sure to ask our teams for some tips to find your perfect cheese.” EdenLocal

Not A party in the Park Most months I look for a story in the community across Eden that needs more than just a press release, but maybe with an edge to it to get it noticed. There have been some great stories about community groups, action groups that really show the power of the people and linked thinking. It might be that you are part of one of these groups, or want to form a group that is focused on getting the best in the community where you live. I’ve taken on a lot of projects, which serve the community. You are reading one now. What follows is an update, which whilst very current, it may be in the local press very soon. It is something very close to my home and as a resident, I hope I am able to help with it. It’s a statement by a small group of determined residents, which I hope helps raise their issue to a new level as enough is enough!
And then the rain came! On Saturday 22/7/17 after a long spell of dry sunny weather, for a few short hours heavy rain fell which resulted in yet again a sewerage overflow onto the lower public pathway in Wetheriggs Country Park, due to a long standing capacity problem with the sewer which cannot cope with storm flows and despite previous remedial works still floods. This isn’t an isolated incident but one which has regularly occurred on this land over the past 35 years, even before this public park was created. However what is different now is that this is now a public park, used daily by a multitude of people and last weekend the overflow not only contaminated the lower path, but also deposited used syringes with the sewerage, washed onto the public pathway from this drain overflow. Wetheriggs Country Park was created from an area of open public space from the rear of Clifford Road towards the A66. It was used mainly by dog walkers, but was upgraded around 2011/2012 to make up for space lost to the New Squares development. Unfortunately, this decision seems to have been taken without full consideration by the planning authorities of the associated wastewater issues. Flooding happens when the sewer can’t cope with water volumes over a short period of time, such as sudden heavy rainfall. Thus the parks sewerage flooding came to the attention of the wider public when a hurried conversion from a playing field was made to a community recreEdenLocal

ation area, without any real consideration given to its geology and existing drainage services. Historically drainage problems have occurred in this area and have been reported accordingly by residents to both EDC and United Utilities over the past 35 years (local residents’ knowledge). EDC deemed this land development and using Sainsbury’s money, which paid for footpaths to be constructed and playground activities/climbing frames were installed along the length of the footpath from the rear of Clifford Road towards the A66, together with picnic tables on the top of the green – not needing planning permission UU were not consulted nor involved when redevelopment began. This park is used by a wide variety of the general public – dog walkers, running clubs, local schoolchildren and their P.E teachers, guests from North Lakes Hotel to name a few and is a great facility for the local community. The continual flooding of sewerage waste, polluting/ damaging pathways and contaminating adjoining land used by locals for leisure purposes, raises public concern regarding environmental health issues. The concerns peaked with local residents when they held a meeting with United Utilities and EDC in February 2015 after severe flooding. United Utilities admitted that to resolve the drainage capacity problem would entail capital investment which is done on a cost basis and that they must prioritise what money is available for high priority issues such as internal flooding/pollution and that these take precedence over external flooding not affecting property.

Thus this town has a public park which floods with sewerage from an inadequate drainage system which has not been updated since North Lakes Hotel, Thirlmere Park and The Crescent sheltered housing had all been built. Worryingly Newbiggin and Stainton water pumping stations are now added onto this system.

Penrith has already commenced on major redevelopments that will see the town increase hugely in the next 10 -15 years, some of which will be using the present sewerage line which cannot cope now. United Utilities state that once a development achieves planning permission, UU has to accept that connection into the sewer and they, the developers then have a legal right to connect to the sewer.
(2 only)
If United Utilities have no money for investment, are public users of Wetheriggs Park to continue plodding through sewerage (either visible on surface or soaked into pathways) indefinitely? Over the past 5 years local residents and councillors and our local MP have attempted to come to a solution with EDC and United Utilities. UU have previously stated that they are not legally liable for the flooding from the sewerage system, simply because they could not control who connects into the sewers and because they could not control it they are not legally liable. UU have very limited powers. Recent legislation that came in 2010, put more emphasis on the County Council to get ahead of the game through the planning process. Thus what is the way forward? Since the continued camera surveying of drains to eliminate blockages, flushing systems etc does not resolve the underlying hydraulic problem on this sewer network which can-

The footpath in the Park was washed away again 22nd July 2017
have received an email from United Ulities treating this repeat problem not as a priority, which is clearly getting worse. Importantly, residents of Wetheriggs are already in communication with Eden District Council once again discussing solutions and how together with much needed support and backing from all tiers of local government, more residents and local businesses need to resolve this matter before it reaches the next level in contaminating a larger area in winter as it has previously. Syringes were wash up at the side of the path 22nd July 2017 after the most recent flooding
not cope with storm flows hence the flooding. When councillors have asked UU why upgrading pipework was not considered with any new developments rather than repair/reseal, time after time UU have reiterated that they must prioritise what funding is available for high priority issues which are internal flooding/pollution. So where do the residents / local park users go from here after 5 years of wading through polluted waste water, walking on contaminated grass once water seeps into soil – ground still classed as polluted for at least 11 days. The public and children deserve better than this! Come on EDC – let’s have some action! Surely as a public body, EDC can bring more pressure to bear on UU. There are enough regulatory bodies to ensure this company fulfils its public obligations re pollution/ prevention. That was a statement issued at the time of print by residents and two local councillors living on the Wetheriggs estate, Penrith. I have also seen the emails and six years’ worth of notes, emails and pictures to support the statement. All of Wetheriggs residents will all be receiving a letter with their Eden Local in the very near future. Everyone will be able to follow this campaign to stop what is happening and local neighbourhood groups challenge via Facebook. The real concern is now shared. Are the drains big enough in Penrith to handle the scale of development, or like the residents of Wetheriggs are you going to wake up in the not too distant future to see that like Wetheriggs, there is a problem and it’s too late? From pollution in parks comes the potential problem of pollution in becks, streams and rivers; then we have a bigger problem. Sewerage in the Summer, possibly not such a nice walk for residents or visitors. It is going to be quite a task to sort this one out as this week, both the residents and Eden District Council EdenLocal

Does your conservatory need a
professional CLEAN?
A complete, affordable interior and/or exterior conservatory cleaning service using specialist access and cleaning equipment that will leave your conservatory looking like new. A CONSERVATORY is an excellent investment, increasing the value far above its cost and when looked after properly, it will last for years. But, if it isn’t cleaned properly, there could be problems – and that’s where ConserVClean* comes in. Michael McFarlane could not find anyone to clean his own conservatory, so he started up ConserVClean which has been growing ever since. Most work has come via customer recommendations. The company is fully insured and uses specialist cleaning and roof access equipment. The system can extend the life of a conservatory and also helps to prevent potential leaks and algae growth. “Conservatories cost on average about the same price as a family car”, says Michael. “Proud car owners wash and wax their vehicles and spend hundreds of pounds a year maintaining them. But, you only keep a car two or three years, and you lose money on it.” “A conservatory costs thousands too, but it will last a lot longer than a car, and it’s an excellent investment if it is properly maintained. It’s only common sense to keep it properly cleaned.” “Wet weather and bird muck can contribute to the decay of a conservatory. If conservatories are not maintained, they will become dirty and green algae forms, possibly feeding on the rubber seals”, says Michael. “Algae can grow within key joints which if left untreated may leak and the value of the conservatory may fall unless expensive repairs are performed. This need not happen if the conservatory is regularly cleaned.”
Powerwashers and normal cleaning brushes can damage seals and scratch poylcarbonated roofs, making good homes for dirt. For a fraction of the cost of maintaining a car, ConserVClean will increase the looks, reduce problems and prolong the life of your conservatory. Trying to sell your house? A gleaming conservatory will increase the selling appeal. Let in more light! A brighter interior – even a thin layer of dirt can diminish light penetration. Preventative Maintenance. Cleaned once or twice a year, your conservatory will be kept in good condition and you will get maximum enjoyment from it. WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY "First class service. 100% pleased." - Mr Knox, Armathwaite "First class job!" - Mrs Metcalfe, Carlisle "Wouldn't hesitate to recommend. A man who I know as Dimitrios
Panogiota and Dimitrios It was the 1st March that Just Greek opened its doors and it was in the April that with Eden Local homes across Penrith and some of the villages around it received a menu of the food on offer. Well I do love my food, but I really love Greek food! Just Greek is a taste of the Mediterranean. I’ve written a lot of articles on food and their origins and I have even written about the history of an orange vegetable friend, the carrot, which whilst orange today the carrot dates back to 10th Century Persia and Asia Minor, which was either purple or white. Moving towards the Mediterranean region in the 14th Century before finally coming west on our shores. I can talk about it, but tasting it is a better option, trust me.
EdenLocal
I sat in the area at the back of the shop with Dimitrios, that he runs with his wife Panogiota and we talked about him before we talked about the food. Just Greek represents Dimitrios, his family and his country, but above all his passion for traditional Greek food. When I first met him I asked him why he didn’t cook fish and it was explained that he opted for a Greek Grill as creating tastes here in England that are like those back home cannot always be achieved with fish. I got it as I’ve fished in the Mediterranean. It’s warm and a bream off the British Isles isn’t the same taste as a bream from the warm sea and sun. When he was 25, as he described it he worked in a ‘Greek House’ in Athens. 12 years later he was on the island of Zante also know to

and open seven days a week. When Dimitrios came to England, he arrived in Sheffield and from there he started again, leaving the warmth of the Mediterranean behind him and the family business still running with the family. He started out by joining a street food market that operates in the UK, so on the road he and Panogiota went, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and in England they would be setting up their stall in Ipswich one weekend, then be in Newcastle the following weekend. One of these markets eventually placed them in Carlisle where they then lived until they to Penrith.
Spanakopita
Whilst you’ll see the takeaway/café/shop at 48 King Street and smell those amazing aromas drifting out of the door, the street food part of the business is still a key part of Just Greek, where they still attend festivals across the country. When I looked at Dimitrios’ diary, festivals in Glasgow, Ipswich, Newcastle and Carlisle were planned in. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Just Greek stall at one of the Food Festivals here in Penrith I said. In the recent Penrith on a Plate, I saw Dimitrios standing outside his shop with his arms folded looking up at the events a few doors away. Well we will come back to that another day.
apple turnover, golden filo pastry wraps a spinach and feta cheese filling, I tried it and I liked it and I had never had it before, but I started to realise that I was being educated in Greek food not as a visitor but like I was actually in someone’s home. If you walk into the shop, or look in the window, you will see meat on a rotating skewer just like a kebab, but it is not on the menu in the shop or on the takeaway menu. That’s because what you see isn’t a kebab, its Yeeros, pronounced Gyros, in Greece. Now whilst I am writing about a mouth watering experience, I tell you what Yeeros is.
Let’s talk about the food. In the window on display you will always see the Spanakopita. Like a large
Yeeros is layers of pork not processed meat and the Chicken Yeeros is the same. They are cooked like a kebab on a rotating skewer. So you can now have a local traditional taste of Greece, in Penrith, because at Just Greek, it is just that which you would experience in a Greek House

17-25! Starting a new academic year By Emily Quinn
wisely to break yourself gently back into the routine of waking early and having to actually use your brain! If any of you are like me, you won’t use your brain in the same way over the summer and then you’ll have to get it back into gear for study when you start back!
Very Muddy and Very Wet Kendal Calling!
No one really wants the summer to end and to have to go back to school, college or university. You’ve just got to think about the end product; what you’re going to come out with when it’s all over. Reflecting on that may give you the drive you need. The key to success in starting a new year or starting at completely new places, is organisation. I learned the hard way! Folders, colours and sticky notes can help. You could ‘glam up’ your files and notebooks to make your study material look more enticing and something to be proud of. I find it actually makes revision and note taking a lot less daunting. Organising yourself can motivate you to want to do work and it may encourage others to want to do so too. If people can see what EdenLocal
potentially could be done, it may encourage them to do so themselves. The next important thing is getting back into it. As I said at the beginning of this article, no one really wants to go back to another academic year, but we all have things that we don’t want to do! Look at it this way; education doesn’t last forever. When you think about it, in the grand scheme of things, it’s the easy part of life. Plus, there’s so many things you pick up and learn, preparing you for the road ahead. Thirdly, try and avoid stress! No one wants to become a stress head in the first week back and teachers and lecturers certainly don’t want that. It’s important to relax into it. Organise yourself and plan your time

School, university and college are hopefully only a very small part of a long life. All you need to do is take what you can from all the opportunities you get from the different stages of your life. No one is going to ask anymore of you. At the end of the day, you know what you need to do to get where you want to be and once you’ve acquired those skills and experience, no one can take them away from you. So a slightly shorter article this month, but just a friendly reminder of what not to forget when starting back or beginning a new chapter of your academic life. Like myself, who is starting university in September, it’s the start of a new era. Here comes the cheesy bit… you’ve just got to grab the opportunities and suck everything you can out of them! Until next month when we will again be considering more of the wonders of society and how they affect teens and young adults.

Building Control Surgery at Penrith Building Supplies
In the last week of July, Eden FM and Cumbrian Local Publications were invited to Penrith Building Supplies. Nigel Peacock presented a two hour show and interviewed all of those involved in the event, whilst I snapped a few photos. The show is a regular monthly feature on Eden FM with Eden District Council called ‘Communication in the Community’, which is now in its third year. The shows are either based in Penrith studios or out on location in the District. The Eden FM team, working with officers and councillors, have a number of shows scheduled for Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Penrith between September 2017 and April 2018, so we may see you soon. Here is the full update on the event from Barry Cooper, Communications Officer at Eden District Council. Local residents and tradespeople benefitted from the professional advice that was available at a Building Control Surgery run by Eden District Council and Penrith Building Supplies this week. The event was held on Tuesday 25 July at Penrith Building Supplies premises on Stalker Road on the Gilwilly Industrial Estate in Penrith. A variety of free information and advice was available for people attending the surgery on all kinds of building matters, from extending your home, to changing windows or doors, or for tradespeople needing information about the type of permission required for construction jobs they may be considering undertaking. Eden District Council’s Building Control Manager, Alistair Richmond, said: “The Building Control Surgery Nigel Peacock (Eden FM) interviews Bryne Reid (WBS Insulation)
Roger Parkin, Business Development Manager, Penrith Building Supplies
was a good day with an opportunity for us to meet the public and tradespeople and answer their queries face to face. I would like to thank Penrith Building Supplies for hosting the event, the manufacturers who attended with trade stands and Eden FM for covering the surgery with an outside broadcast. This is certainly an initiative we will look to build on in the future.” Eden District Council’s Building Control Team receives and deals with around 700 building regulations applications per annum. These can vary from replacement windows or doors to housing sites with 100’s of new homes to large commercial buildings. By working with the Building Control Team at your local Council, you will receive professional advice and can be reassured that building works are being carried out to the appropriate industry standards. Roger Parkin, Penrith Building Supplies’ Business Development Manager, said: “We were delighted to host the Building Control Surgery and by working with Eden District Council and product manufacturers we can help ensure the public and tradespeople get the right advice and appropriate products to ensure building regulations are met. I would also like to thank all the people who donated money to Cancer Research on the day as we raised £93.35 for this worthwhile cause.” Marsh Industries were one of the supplies attending the event. I asked Nigel Swallow, Area Manager, to tell us about his company. “Marsh Industries delivers world-class water and wastewater treatment products

Court Thorn Practice Patient Part
It was recognised by the Court Thorn Practice Patient Participation Group, which was set up in 2011 that the services of General Practice are not just the cure of ailments and the provision of care. In partnership and under the guidance of the Practice much more can be done by the patients, for the patients and the community. Court Thorn Practice serves a rural community that recognises that emergency services take longer to reach outlying hamlets and villages. An emergency ambulance will take on average up to 40 minutes to reach the area. Health education is the key to assisting the local community to help itself, until professionals arrive. Seminars are an important tool for promoting better health education as well as education in such topics as Power of Attorney and what happens if a partner needs residential care. The PPG has to date ran 13 Health seminars on topics ranging from diabetes, heart diseases, arthritis, dementia as well as dealing with emergencies in the home and Putting Your Affairs in Order. The use of a defibrillator has been demonstrated and tried by the audience at 5 of the more recent seminars. 3 Seminars per year have taken place since 2013 with the subjects chosen by the audience and the PPG in EdenLocal
partnership with the Doctors find suitable speakers. The PPG provide a free weekly prescription delivery service run by Members and other volunteers. Many patients live in isolated areas, without access to public transport and see this as a valuable, vital service. The results of the annual Survey of these patients are testimony to the need and the commitment of those delivering the service. The PPG have bi-monthly meetings, which are attended by the Practice Manager and one of the doctors attends to give an update on practice performance and future plans. The practice was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in their 2016 inspection. Among the areas noted as outstanding were the contributions made by the PPG. Recognising the rural area served by the practice, the PPG in collaboration with Calthwaite and District First Responders and the North West Ambulance Service has worked since late 2015 to place Defibrillators (Community Public Access Defibrillators) throughout the area. Today there are 16 defibrillators throughout the area. While the overall costs may vary with the site, a typical installation costs about £2,050. The cost is
The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales
made up of a defibrillator £1,010, stainless cabinet £894 and signage at appropriate key points £146. Grants have been secured from both County and Parish Councils and the Cumberland News Group. Some communities have raised the money themselves to fund their own defibrillator. The British Heart Foundation has supplied free a number of defibrillators as part of a national campaign to try and help the 60,000, who suffer out of hospital cardiac arrests. Court Thorn Practice Patient Participation Group has embarked on a fundraising drive with 3 clear objectives.
1. First Responders and Defibrillators Running costs per defibrillator will vary depending upon usage. Pads currently cost £33 and can only be used once, whether for training or in real time use. The battery costs £125 and has an expected life of 5 years. To date information has to be built up but based on an average use of 2 pads per year, we would estimate the cost circa £91, so for 16 defibrillators it would been around £1,500 per year. There are a number of areas served by the practice that do not have a defibrillator. We envisage that more defibrillators will be required.

ticipation Group First Responders are volunteers, who carry a bleep and respond to life-threatening emergency calls in their local area. They are trained by North West Ambulance Service and carry basic equipment including oxygen and a defibrillator. There is a shortage of First Responders and a drive to recruit more people is on-going. There will be a cost subject to the numbers recruited and trained.
2. Free Prescription Delivery Service The practice recognises the free prescription delivery service as a valuable vital service in this rural area. The volunteers, who provide this weekly service, are paid mileage for using their own vehicle. The service is currently costing around £900 per year.
3. Practice Equipment Fund The Practice would benefit from an ECG machine, whose output can directly update the patient’s records saving considerable time and effort. A 24 hour blood pressure machine would offer a similar benefit. The cost of these machines is circa £3,200.

Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. We had new lead valleys put in roof, not only did Richard beat every quote we got he also done a little extra work free of charge, would highly recommend

Out & About
Could Penrith be Top? By the time you read this Penrith will have been judged for Britain in Bloom. The category entered is for the Business Improvement District (BID), in our case this is the centre of Penrith. The town is one of 6 finalists from across Britain. We have come a long way in the last few years and our entry at this high level shows like in so many other ways, what can be achieved when we work together, but we can do more. One organisations problem might be overcome by working with another. One example of this is how best to dispose of the contents of the towns hanging baskets and planters at the end of the season, estimated to be well over a skip full. The judges visiting our town are bound to ask and perhaps this year we can get a tick in the right box. The Community Gardeners have set up receiving bays at the Community Poly Tunnel site in Castletown. It is hoped that a mix of reusable compost can be achieved by adding horse manure, new soil, coffee grounds and other soil enhancers like comfrey and nettles. We are open to suggestions and offers of help
to handle the task. The ‘new’ compost will be used around the town. Also busy working in the making of the compost will be our little friends, the earthworm. This year the Community Gardeners have taken a special interest nurturing these soil workers. An average garden contains about 170,000 earthworms and without them busily breaking down leaves and other organic matter as well their aerating tunnels, we would not have soil capable of growing healthy plants. Open for Business - Worm Cafes Take a look at the ‘Worm Cafes’ in the Salvation Army garden in Hunter Lane. We made the tubes from old decking boards and discarded plastic utility pipe by simply drilling worm size holes in the bottom half and burying them in the soil. We added wet strips of paper, fruit & veggie peelings, damp cardboard, egg boxes, scrunched egg shells and the odd cup of water. These are topped up every week from the kitchen. Any container buried in the ground will do just so long as worms can travel in and out for a tasty morsel before exiting into the border and ‘pooing’ in the soil adding nutrients. Worms will multiply at a rapid rate if they have a good supply of food and we get a steady feed to our growing plants at root level. Add a lid if you make one to keep nosey animals out. Another wormary, fed in the same way (again at the Salvation Army) has a tap on it and provides a liquid feed. Unlike earthworms who like to travel, the worms used here like to stay put and munch. The fertilizer they produce is watered down and used once a month to feed our plants and planters in Hunter Lane. We add it to the base of the plants only.

Comfrey & Nettle Soup- yummy for plants! We have been making our own liquid fertilizers for several years using nettles and comfrey. This gives us a steady supply of organic nutrient and is a rich plant feed for free! Comfrey (we collect ours from a footpath verge it grows in the wild) is high in just about every nutrient a plant needs- including Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Nettles soup is good for leafy plants and heavy feeders. To make the soup simply pick leaves (wear gloves when collecting them).Place in a container (we get ours from garages that have car washes) and top up with rain water (free of chemicals). Leave it to stew then water down at the rate of 10 parts water to one of soup. We use this every week on our plants during the growing season. Top up the leaves as they rot down. Be warned it’s a stinky soup! Add bin contents to the compost heap a t the end of the growing season it will aid the composting process. Free Veggie Tonic – did you know this? When you have cooked the veg for supper, just let the water you used cool down and feed it to your plants, especially useful for those growing outside your front door or on a window sill!

What am I? • I am great for soil. • I eat lots of dead plant material and burrowing helps aerate the soil and helps to let water through. • I am made up of rings – like segments called annuli. My annuli are covered in small hairs that help me to move and burrow. • I can eat up to one third of my body weight in a day. • Birds, rats and toads love to eat me. • I usually live just under the surface of the earth. • When it rains my burrows can become flooded so I have to come up nearer to the surface. This is when Blackbirds come looking for me! Joan Robinson Penrith Community Gardener
Any container can be used, a bucket, plastic tubes, bits of wood, but it will need a lid and be big enough to bury.
Malcolm Carruthers is featured with one of the worm cafes he made on display at Penrith on a Plate. Larger compost bin behind him is £15 (delivered) from CCC
Making a Worm Café Just drill some holes in the bottom and sides half way up for the worms to enter. Add some damp newspaper strips. Add garden worms (they will multiply). Place fruit and veg scraps, grass cuttings, damp cardboard, shredded newspaper. Keep slightly damp. Worms will travel in and out, their castings will enrich the soil. ‘What, you’ve never heard of Alpha?’ Got questions about life? The following week is, ‘Who is Jesus?’ Other sessions include, ‘Why did Jesus die?’, ‘How can I be sure?’ and ‘Does God heal today?’ The evenings start at 7.30pm at The Bridge at the bottom of Wordsworth Street and finish at 9:30pm. Alpha started in the 1980’s as a short course for new church members at a church in London.
No question is too big or too small and you can say as little or as much as you like in the discussion.
It has grown exponentially. Over 27 million people in every continent of the earth have now done Alpha!
The biggest questions are often about suffering, other religions, science and faith and whether there is sufficient evidence to believe at all.
It offers an opportunity to explore the meaning of life, in particular the Christian faith. It is low key, friendly and fun.
There is no pressure, no charge and no follow up if you stop coming.
Alpha has been used by all the main Christian denominations. It runs for 11 weeks and each evening consists of a meal, a half hour film on the big screen, then discussion. We have run it in Penrith for nearly 20 years, twice a year, and still have plenty of guests wanting to come which is brilliant. The introductory session on Thursday 28th September is, ‘Is there more to life than this?’ EdenLocal

Some quotes about Alpha:‘What Alpha offers and what is attracting thousands of people, is permission, rare in secular culture, to discuss the big questions - life, death and their meaning’. The Guardian ‘What distinguishes Alpha from other initiatives is the relaxed, easy going feeling of the proceedings - that and its astonishing success’. The Times I love running Alpha and find it as challenging, exciting and rewarding as my day time job as a vet! Do come and give it a try if you are interested. I wish there had been something like this

in my student days when I was busy arguing with Christian friends at uni. I was convinced that Christians were hypocrites and that science had done away with the need to believe in a God. It is still good to be challenged by people’s views and although it is aimed at non church goers, if you are a church goer or on the fringes of church, you will still enjoy Alpha. ‘It’s like an evening out with friends’. ‘I’m still an atheist but I loved Alpha’.

The work is undertaken by National Trust fell rangers and Lake District National Park Authority volunteers. In the last ten years, more than 200 sections of fell paths have been repaired using a variety of traditional techniques. The price of the calendar has been held at £10 including p&p. The calendar can be purchased direct from the Society website using PayPal.
