Dear Residents and Businesses

As November rolls over into December, we prepare for the seasonal festivities. So much has happened in Penrith and the surrounding areas and in the January Edition, I’ll be reflecting on the first year of Eden Local, the stories, the supporting businesses and unveiling the plans for Eden Local 2012 in more detail. A warm welcome to our new readers in Carlisle, Appleby, Brough, Kirkby Stephen and Shap. Welcome back to our existing readers. You may have noticed that we have changed our distribution status from Penrith Town and Penrith Rural to Eden Valley. This is due to us expanding into Carlisle and now as far down as Kirkby Stephen. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Eden FM is now live on 87.9 FM and available on line at www.edenfmradio.co.uk. Please tune in or log on to your local radio. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who has helped and supported this project, particularly all the radio volunteers who have fitted in much time on top of their normal daily tasks. Without their commitment, the radio would not exist. I would also like to thank local businesses, charities and Follow us on facebook organisations for getting behind this project and I hope you all reap the benefits of having a community radio. The Eden Property Gallery 4&5 As Editor and Director of Eden Local and Chairman and Real Christmas trees online 7 Director of Eden FM radio, I would like to present what I New Legislation for agency workers 8 hope is a Christmas present for 2012 to local businesses in One present off your Christmas List 9 the Eden Valley.

You now have a local community magazine, which supports, promotes and works with your local community radio, which is run by volunteers and available 24 hours a day. Eden Local also now has a local business information database and directory called CA Business. CA Business is the vessel for supporting the required funding to keep prices affordable for businesses to advertise in Eden Local and it is the main contributor to assist with financing Eden FM and supporting local charities and good causes.

HR

Do you ever hire agency workers?

Did you know that on 1st October 2011, the law changed in relation to agency workers? What do the changes mean for you as a hirer? What entitlements do agency workers have from day 1? What entitlements do agency workers have after 12 weeks? Perhaps you use agency workers to help out at busier times of the year or to cover staff vacancies? Well, if you do hire agency workers, you need to understand the responsibilities you now have. The Agency Workers Regulations 2010, came into force on 1st October 2011 and gave agency workers the entitlement to the same basic employment and working conditions, as if they had been recruited directly by you, if and when they complete 12 weeks in the same job. This would include terms and conditions relating to areas such as pay, working hours, rest breaks and holiday entitlement. From the first day of an agency worker’s assignment, you need to ensure that they can access facilities, such as a staff canteen and staff parking and also access information on your job vacancies. Agency workers should be made aware of any relevant, vacant positions that arise during their assignment. If you are a hirer, you should: • Ensure that you provide any agency you use with your terms and conditions of employment, so that they can ensure that an agency worker receives Edenfm

the same treatment, as if they had been recruited directly, should they work for you for more than 12 weeks, carrying out the same job • Ensure that an agency worker has access to facilities and job vacancy information from the first day of their assignment • Ensure that there is a gap of at least 6 weeks between assignments, if the hirer wishes to hire an agency worker again • Take advice if you are unsure of your responsibilities Don’t get caught out with these changes or any others. Employment law is constantly changing and Quinn HR Consulting can provide you with updates and information, either through face to face contact or by sending you written information. We would be happy to come and discuss your requirements.

One present that shouldn’t be on your List this Christmas (or £100 reasons to file your tax return on time) the prospect of daily penalties if it’s outstanding 3 months later.

elcri

The solution is to be ready well before the deadline - we all know preparing for your tax return can be a bit of a chore but if you deal with it early on, then it should be easy. Keep it simple – keep a folder handy to put all your tax papers in, such as your P60, dividend vouchers etc.? Use a checklist to tick off as you go. Then you’ll know you’ve got everything sorted. Don’t be one of the 10% who file late and don’t give HMRC a present of your hard earned.

ycnatnuocca

(And make your first New Year resolution now – get it in your diary for April 2012!)

Did you know that last year taxpayers gifted HM Revenue and Customs about £116m in late filing penalties? That’s some present. For a minority of taxpayers Christmas isn’t the season to be jolly – they’ve got to sort out their tax return. Well this festive season if you delay and don’t file on time, there will be an automatic penalty of £100 plus

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and we hope, a more Prosperous New Year.

Make it a safe learning experience with Carleton Driving School It’s a strange one, but being old enough to drive arrives at a time when at 17 or 18, we are at one of the most expressive stages of our lives. Expressing our opinions, views on life and for many, a need to become a real individual, taking control of situations and faced with responsibilities at what is still an early stage of our lives. What a thought? Now put all of this behind the wheel of a car, then bring in the rules and set the target. One more test before you experience freedom and independence beyond what you have ever imagined. Then of course, it comes to owning a car, getting it taxed and insured, which is not always affordable. Carleton school of Motoring can teach you how to drive, however, most knowledge is acquired through the experienced gained once out on the road. Good, solid grounding is essential to give the new driver confidence that enables them to get out on the road and enjoy the independence that can be gained. After you have passed your test, this might help.

Pass Plus The Cumbria Road Safety Partnership “CRSP” run a scheme for 17-20 year olds. It provides most of the funding required to take the “pass plus”. As well as a great help in obtaining cheaper insurance, it also gives newly or recently qualified drivers all the skills required to become a confident driver and covers things such as night driving, driving on dual carriageways and motorways, in all weathers and town and rural driving. To obtain a voucher for £100, all they have to do is attend a 1 hour presentation at your local fire station. Pass Plus is accessible for those up to the age of 25, however, vouchers are only available to 17-20 yr olds.

And the car in front is a Aygo

Following on from last month’s article about the Rav 4, this month we scale things down. The Aygo is the little pocket rocket, that has a bulletshaped profile and low sporty stance. It was first on the scene in 2005. Toyota have made tremendous efforts with the Aygo, to ensure that should it be damaged, repair costs will be as low as possible and this no doubt helps keep insurance costs to a minimum. The Aygo is generally rated as an insurance group one vehicle. It is popular on student websites that list low cost to insure vehicles. The Aygo is also standard Road Tax B, which is £20 a year. The Aygo VVT-I Petrol 5 speed manual transmission and 6 speed Multimode transmission, share the same fuel consumption, which tops out at 61.4 mpg. When the Aygo first came out back in 2006, the result of the AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon on 4th and 5th October from Peak Performance, was that it obtained an overall fuel economy of 83.44mpg, more than 20 per cent better than the official combined figure of 68.9mpg. The Toyota Aygo successfully defended its crown as the most economical car on the roads at the 2007 AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon on 3 and 4 October. It finished ahead of every other car, even economy specials. Using just 19.12 phone: 01768 899111 / 01768 862394

litres of petrol, they achieved an overall consumption figure of 78.39 mpg, an improvement of nearly 28 per cent over the official combined figure. Three of the top four cars in the event, were regular production Toyota Aygos. Researching on the web, there is a lot of feedback from students claiming to have driven 100 miles for £10. Many would describe this as an urban city car, but clearly from the feedback found, these cars are motoring some distance and as they wear, parts are cheap to replace. Every car has its limit and every driver drives differently. One thing very clear, is that if you’re in the market for an economical car that’s cheap to insure and yet still quite nippy to drive, then the Aygo has to be on your list and importantly they are always available from Jim Walton.

Carleton Farm the year is complete I’ve spent a whole year covering the farming year with Neil Hodgson and our local community farm and farm shop, at Carleton village on the outskirts of Penrith, for those new to the area or receiving Eden Local for the first time. In the Eden Valley, Carleton Farm is one of many that has been working the weather and where the family has dedicated their life to what they do. As farms, they all have many things in common, but one thing that I have been bringing to the Eden Local readers every month for the last 12 months, is the importance of supporting your farming community by purchasing their produce, which appears on the shelves of local shops, as well as in family shops on the site of the farms. On page 31, you would have read the importance of community produced food and what it means. We now have local, independent businesses within a mile of some of our homes, offering you online goods, sourced locally. Please support them, but like me, please also take a trip to your local farm shop. It’s a year done on the farm. We started with Carleton carrots and we finish with potatoes and Christmas hampers. We did cover the types of potatoes, which at that time were stored in a massive barn just outside Langwathby. It was a two part story and it came from the fact that a lady I met, simply asked me what I was going to write about next! I said ‘potatoes’ and I was then asked with it being January, whether I could write about something seasonal. Potatoes part 1 and part 2 are available to read online at www.edenlocal.co.uk and hard copies of back issues are available in Carleton Farm Shop. As mentioned back then, there are 80 varieties of potatoes. The local potato is generally Wilja, grown in the Carleton fields and it is as good as any import from the south. Climate generally dictates what we grow in Cumbria. Other potatoes may include Valour and Markies. If you’re buying potatoes and want to support the local producers, it’s always worth checking the label. To the best of my knowledge, Maris Piper potatoes are not grown in Cumbria and many of the potatoes available are Maris Piper from Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. Well, after last month’s Carleton Farm update, we did have concerns, that if the harvest was not started soon, this would have had a tragic impact on the crop. Fortunately, mother nature lent a hand and with a few days of dry weather and a bit of wind, we were able to get out and make a start. From the images, you will see it’s been a good crop and it was nice just to watch this 4 man team working their way across the field collecting, sorting and preparing the potatoes for store. Many thanks to Neil and his family for sharing their life on the farm over this first Eden Local year. EdenLocal

Enjoying Christmas by Peter Sidwell

Christmas is a time of celebration and sharing quality time with family and friends. If you are the cook in the house and not careful, your quality time disappears if anyone pops into the kitchen to say hello. Time spent in the kitchen preparing food for family and friends, is one of the great pleasures, but often by the time the revelries begin, you are too worn out to enjoy them. Draw up menus for all the meals you plan to make over the Christmas holidays well in advance, including all drinks, breakfasts and snacks. Starting this task early gives you time to look at new ideas, search out recipes and change your mind or amend things if circumstances or guest numbers change. Recipes Found the recipes you want? Read the recipes, then read them again. There’s nothing worse than realising on Christmas Eve that you are missing a vital ingredient, pan, or worse, you don’t know EdenLocal

how to do it. Choose or check recipes to see if dishes can be made in advance and frozen or how long they will keep once cooked, so that they can be prepared one or two days in advance. Don’t be Overambitious This is the one area where many fall down by taking on too much to do in too short a time. Pull back and be realistic in balancing what is required in the kitchen and everywhere else (gift-wrapping, housework, kids and family). Buy Quality ingredients Christmas cooking and all it involves is not a time to start experimenting with new techniques. If you have never made bread, now is not the time to start. Please remember when cooking, that if you start with good quality ingredients, in my mind half your work is done. Less is more when you have great quality, local ingredients.

Red Grape Chutney Ingredients 400g of red seedless grapes , 2 red onions , 1 star anise, 200g of sugar, 50ml of sherry or damson vinegar, salt, pepper, 1 tsp of chopped fresh thyme Here’s How Finely chop the red onions and place into a medium size pan with the sugar, vinegar, star anise and thyme. Add in a splash of olive oil and cook on a medium heat until soft. Add in the grapes and continue to cook for 4-5 minutes. Add in the vinegar and sugar and cook for 10-15 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved and the liquid has reduced by half. The grapes should be soft and squidgy. Let the chutney cool a little, then taste for seasoning and sharpness. If it is a little sweet for you, add some more vinegar, or if it is a little sharp for you, maybe add a touch of honey to balance the flavours. If I am serving up a plate of local cheeses and this chutney, I always add a bowl full of roasted walnuts glazed in a little honey, a tsp of chopped rosemary and a sprinkle of sea salt, as they come out of the oven so they have a lovely sweet and salty glaze. The crunch of the walnuts is amazing with the cheese and chutney. www.edenlocal.co.uk

Celebrating a very busy Christmas and a It’s a story, which began exactly a year ago. I was invited to the Stoneybeck Inn, which was undergoing a major refurbishment. Eden Local’s task was to market the potential of the completed work, which meant thinking beyond the builder’s dust and empty rooms, many of them still being re-wired at the time and the Kitchen, including the sink, had only just arrived. Something I have really enjoyed and still do enjoy, is working with Tom and Kathyrn since they took over the running of the Stoneybeck, helping them market their vision, which has been quite a fantastic year. Now for the fun part - the before and after shots!

November 2010 Ullswater Suite

The idea back in November 2010, was to become an established venue for weddings, events and conferences and to be in a position to offer quality, everyday dining, that appeals to everyone. My coverage over the year, has included an assortment of events and activities. The first official event in the new extended part of the Stoneybeck Ullswater suite, was the Utterly Brilliant 80’s party night. Wac-a-Day was live on stage with Timmy Mallett on 19th February 2011. A fun part of my work involved me getting to interview Timmy before he did the show. A friend of Kathryn’s and her family for many years, Timmy explained that he was honoured to do the gig. He said ‘I was thrilled to be the first opening act’. As the year progressed, there was to be more staging of show

an amazing year at the Stoneybeck Inn type events. My next visit in the Spring, however, was to take a night off and attend a Stoneybeck Wine Tasting event. This included a 5 course meal, through which Dave Farrar, head chef, clearly showed a remarkable talent in presentation and taste.

The Coniston Suite today

Weddings and parties were to become the norm throughout the Summer and then the special events’ season began in the Autumn. This started with a comedy night, headlined by Simon Evans from Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and other established comedians from the circuit. It was a complete success and a sell out, which was the same for the Murder Mystery Poirot evening on 8th October. The third and final gig of the Autumn season of events, was Martin Turner’s legendary 70’s band Wishbone Ash, again another fantastic success. As we come full circle and enter the second Christmas season, for Tom, Kathryn and their team, the plan is to maintain much of what has been achieved and to build further on the reputation of the venue for weddings, events and conferences. Now licensed for civil ceremonies and with gardens that will burst into colour, if you haven’t paid them a visit, then maybe the Wedding and Events Fayre on 19th February might just be one reason to do so.

Helvellyn

Peaks and Pathways by Nick Wells

Situated to the south of Lake Ullswater stands one of the most walked mountains in the Lake District. Helvellyn with its impressive Striding Edge is not for the faint hearted, as it has claimed several lives over years gone by. I managed to get parked near the Travellers Rest in Glenridding, and made my way passed the youth hostel and the old greenside mines, along the foot of Birkhouse moor on to

Glenridding Common. Here the ascent gets steeper along the side of Red Tarn Beck until reaching Red Tarn itself. On my left was Striding Edge, to my right was Catstyecam leading to Swirral edge with Helvellyn in front of me. I took the same route as I took last year by the way of Swirral Edge, a formidable ridge in itself, even Oscar found it a tough scramble to the summit. The top of Helvellyn is the centre of a massive range that, in the words of Wainwright, “forms a tremendous natural barrier from north to south, between the deep troughs of the Thirlmere and Ullswater valleys”. After taking in the views, and at over 3000 feet everywhere could be seen, I made my way to the steep scramble down to Striding Edge. To my right was a sharp drop down to Nethermost

Cove, to my left was Red Tarn actually looking quite red. Here I was faced with a steep climb over the Chimney (a vertical rock gulley of about 10 feet), then onto Striding Edge itself. One needs to be careful here but there is a path just below the ridge top for the less adventurous. After carefully negotiating Striding Edge I reached Birkhouse Moor, and the “gap in the wall” which leads to Patterdale. I chose to stay on the path back down to Glenridding offering a magnificent view of Lake Ullswater. This walk is about seven miles in all, and took me four hours. I would grade it as medium to hard. If anyone would like to suggest a walk, please email me at sandwellfurn@aol.com

Finding a positive way through with Love Solar

The government recently published their plans to slash the feed in tariff for renewable energy. This means that from 12th December, domestic users are looking at a 50% reduction in tariffs, and for commercial users, this will be a 75% reduction. The government has stated for many years that ‘green’ is the future and so it does feel as if they have encouraged us to adopt the renewable energy alternatives, only to take the some of the benefits away. Over the past 18 months, Solar PV companies have increased in number and expanded, recruiting more staff and have encouraged the public to invest in Solar PV in order to save money and contribute to CO2 reductions, to meet renewable energy targets.

send their staff to local colleges, employ local fire and burglar alarm companies and pay their rent locally. They are all about community spirit and supporting local businesses. Love Solar are also looking to set up a training scheme for school leavers. With young persons’ unemployment reaching 1 million, I think this is yet another reason for the government to help this industry rather than hinder it.

Take Love Solar, for example. They are a Cumbrian firm based in Penrith. In 2010, Love solar was a one man operation. They now employ sixteen local workers and have plans to employ another 4 or 5 early next year. Or should I say, they did plan to employ another 4 or 5 people. This, of course, is now on hold given the government’s plans. The uncertainty of their future is weighing heavily on everyone’s mind, including those who do business with them.

Love Solar is fully booked up until April 2012. This was the original deadline for the change in feed in tariffs. The deadline is now 12th December and this means that Love Solar will only be able to honour a fraction of the jobs they had committed to completing before the initial April deadline, within the next 5 weeks. This is not the position they wish to be in.

Love Solar pride themselves on being local and putting something into the local community. They do this by staying loyal to local businesses and local people. Love Solar contract local electricians, local scaffolding companies, local plant hire and local roofers. Their support continues with the sourcing of their tools locally, purchasing building materials locally and buying their computers locally. They don’t stop there. They also use local marketing companies, advertise in local publications, purchase fuel locally and use local design and sign companies. They even EdenLocal

phone: 01768 899111 / 01768 862394

This certainly demonstrates what Love Solar is doing to ensure the people of Cumbria support each other and put something back into the local economy. The government should also be demonstrating what they are doing to support local businesses.

The Solar industry would like to urge everyone to contact their local MP and/or local media immediately to voice their opinions. Please show support for the solar and renewable energy industry. After all, it is companies like Love Solar who are supporting our community, not the Government and ‘green’ really is the future for us all. We hope that you will consider Love Solar as a part of your future, as it is ours. Please sign the petition below, be heard, and show your support.

Where do we go from here? Following last month’s article titled ‘Am I a 1 in 10’, we received a huge number of emails and telephone calls from people desperately seeking support and help for members of their family who are affected by dyslexia. The response has been staggering and only leads us to believe that there is a real need to get a centre established in the area. We have been contacted about children as young as 6 years old and adults of 41. Please bear with us if we haven’t got back to you yet. We are in the process of setting up a website, which we hope will provide you with useful information and contacts in the area, prior to a centre being established next year. We know that with the reduction in government funding to schools, support has been scaled back for things like dyslexia, so we believe it is even more important to pull together as a community to see what we can do to support one another. Information about testing and assessment will be available on the website, however, we are in a position to be able to provide you with contact details now of people who can assess younger children for dyslexic tendencies and carry out full assessments for older children and adults. We would also urge employers to get involved, as it is likely that you are employing people with dyslexia and you need to know how you should be supporting them in the workplace. Employees don’t always disclose it, so you need to be able to pick up on the clues.

The British Dyslexia Association is the voice for 10% of the population that experience dyslexia.

How did you know about Eden FM radio?

Welcome to Eden FM. At the time of writing this article, we are exactly two weeks away from the day that the first stage of our campaign for Penrith and the surrounding areas to have its own community radio, is complete. The campaign started in June 2010 when I registered our intention with Ofcom to launch Eden FM. I then discussed the plan with local papers, but there was to be no press release to raise awareness for the community idea that would change communication forever in the Eden Valley. Have you ever seen a press release about the Eden FM project, other than that in the Eden Local? I am hoping that this will change soon. In order to raise awareness of the campaign for a community radio, the only option was to create some form of media presence independently. The only way to do this, was to launch Eden Local publication. A community radio station comes with a lot of responsibility. Setting up a community radio station requires a lot of support from everyone in the community around it. It’s not about one person with an idea, it’s about the voice of many and meeting a need in the community for people. It’s about offering a choice, which comes with free airtime to all charities to promote what they do and low cost advertising for businesses, as well as free publicity to businesses in these testing times. It’s about telling everyone just how brilliant the community is and what it achieves. It’s about giving people opportunities in media and for some, to be involved in a project like this, it is about living a small dream. Community radio is not about shareholders and it’s not about making a profit or politics, but it is about serving the community and becoming a hub of the community, open to everyone. Like any social enterprise project, it is about contributing to the community and putting something into the community to help it. Eden FM is fundamentally about improving

the communication across the Eden Valley, eventually with the aim of being a full time community radio, transmitting 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. We firstly have a 28 day trial licence, but from 25th November, it is the intention that Eden FM will also be available on the internet. With your support, Eden FM online will be a part of your community’s future. Eden FM will cater for all. It is a fact that there are people who would love to pick up a local newspaper, magazine or a book, but may not be able to read them. There are people in the community who may not be able to read this article, so I’m hoping someone will tell them about it and the radio. Eden FM radio will be supporting every charity through free publicity and a dedicated show. The main charity that it will be supporting indefinitely, will be the British Dyslexia Society (more details page 28). In the programming in the regular schedule, will be ‘Talk Dyslexia’. On the website www.edenfmradio.co.uk you will see the full programme listing and programme content. I suppose you could say that is has been a small battle to get to this level. The first obstacle was to get that first press release. This was to beat off the bid of actually having an independent magazine that would not be owned by a media group. For the first time, I can confess that the offer was attractive but the offer was not to include radio as this was seen to already be catered for in the community. Eden FM radio 87.9 FM is Your Voice, Your Choice in the Community so please give it your support. If you are having trouble getting the signal, please let us know at admin@edenfmradio.co.uk but please, if you can email, then have a listen on www.edenfmradio.co.uk Thank you for listening Lee Quinn Director/Chairman of Eden FM radio Ltd

An evening in the Eden Valley with local businesses

Ellie stepping in for mum (Morag of Brunswick Deli)

Nico with his recommendation for December available from the Wine House of Penrith

Karl now serving freshly made relishes from local ingredients

Chorizo from Wigton, pancetta from Workington, orchard fed pork from Stoneybeck, cheese from Appleby, turkey from the Lakeland border and fresh vegetables from the Eden Valley. This isn’t just food, it’s locally produced food! It was just an idea, which I dropped into a conversation with Dale at Eden Valley Windows when I was exploring new initiatives to market his business. With the focus on selling newly fitted kitchens in the showrooms at Eden Valley, I discussed the concept of pulling in local producers and businesses, to stage a mini festival of food, whilst helping Dale’s business, their own businesses and at the same time, raise money for a local charity. I called on Peter Sidwell and Dan Grimshaw, our newly discovered Artisan baker and Karl Philips from Sweet Briar & Ruby’s Deli, Appleby to put on their aprons and

I also spoke to Morag at Brunswick Deli and Nico and Nigel about their Christmas wine selection at the Wine House of Penrith. OB vehicle arrives 2 months late 10th November, will it be ready by the 25th?

Monday to Friday, Sian is on the breakfast show with her crew and I believe they’ll be having breakfast and joining you for breakfast from 7 am until 9am. I’ll be there in the morning from 9am until midday. I have a whole list of people to talk to and this includes everyone I have interviewed in Eden Local over the last 12 months. We have a mix of presenters having lunch with guests live between 12pm and 2pm, then the afternoons are with Stef, who I’m sure will be joining you for tea. As we move on to 4pm, Richard has been busy coordinating shows to come from QEGs and UCC. During the evenings, we have something for everybody. Live bands in the studio one lounge, talking music and playing music on a Monday night, which is followed by Monday Blues with James. Throughout the week, just to give you a flavour of the different styles, we’ll have Toby La Rone rocking on Tuesday, Dub Step with Ian, Northern Soul and Tamala Motown with Andy.

Welcome to your new radio station! Everything you needed to know over the last 12 months has been said and the full story is on the website. You can now listen to Eden FM live on 87.9 FM. The full programme listing is available on line and it will also be in local shops and at all the places where you can collect an Eden Local. My thanks to everyone who has helped with this project. At the time of writing this article, I have just finished discussing Harry King’s show and the launch day. Harry will be hosting his show Swing time, with memories of yesterday on Thursday nights from 6pm. The full content of this and his Christmas nostalgia show on the morning of Saturday 17th December, will all be posted on www.edenfmradio.co.uk.

Have you recently moved in? Have you changed the lock? Here is another question. How many people have the keys to your front door that you don’t know about?

How much does it cost to replace the lock on your front door? An investment in a new lock costs around 21p a day over one year. Compared to the investment in your monthly mortgage or your rent 21p a day for better home or business security is a very small investment

A point to think about Interestingly, I was asked a question the other day, ‘what is your readership?’ Well I’ve heard various tales about how this is calculated. I was told prior to launching Eden Local that it is usually at least 3 times your distribution, but if someone out there knows, please drop me a line! The magazine may be going through over 15,000 doors and even with increases planned to raise this in 2012 to over 20,000, this still doesn’t confirm our readership? Via the internet and based on the distribution, we can boast a minimum of 20,000 readers, I suppose. As a magazine delivered by Royal Mail and collected from regular sites around Eden, it’s not reliant on just its print and distribution figures and of course, unlike a newspaper, it’s read differently. Whether it’s a weekly or daily read, do you keep your paper until the next paper? Once the new paper is out, do you go back and read it again? What was the key story 3 or 4 weeks ago in your daily or weekly read? I still go into business premises, cafes, restaurants, waiting rooms, which include doctors, dentists, vets, railways and other waiting rooms and there are, on most occasions, current and back issues of Eden Local still around. Described by a reader as

a ‘pick up and easy to read publication’, we have had a lot of positive feedback about its size, how easy it is to fit into a bag, a glove box or on a bookshelf. I was in a shop a few days ago and found every issue of the magazine from November 2010 and I constantly hear, during meetings and in passing conversations, snippets of previous stories. There are still many readers logging on for the first time, reading back issues, which like this issue are free to read on line. With Eden FM online, will this blend with or add to the Eden Local reader on line? From the January issue, it’s not just free to read on line at www.edenlocal.co.uk but it will also be available to download as an audio magazine, thanks to the team of volunteers at Eden FM and other people in the community. It will also be available on a CD to those who have not got this facility. My thanks to the visually impaired lady who asked some months ago if this was possible? Eden Local listens to the community and the community can listen to Eden Local and Eden FM. Wishing you all a Happy New Year.
