Well, as a visitor to Penrith for many years and now as a resident with my family living in the town, I am sharing this experience, which is a taste I hope that never goes away. A visitor for many years, I was stuck in my supermarket ways, always tearing about, doing the normal weekly shop. I never stopped to think that when I cooked my eggs and bacon, that the eggs potentially had travelled hundreds of miles behind the ‘freshly laid’ packaging and the bacon that shrivelled up so much that I would put twice as much under the grill to compensate, then midway through cooking I’d drain off the water. False economy sometimes labelled ‘Economy’ bacon. I never had a thought about the advertising of food and supermarkets that introduced brands that tasted that different in a way that made them actually taste as they should. I suppose this means tastes real, which comes at an extra premium for what is classified as the best. Then looking back to where I used to live, did I notice the butchers, the greengrocers, the bakers and fishmongers disappearing from the high street with the post office? Was it at Christmas when I had some time on my hands that I noticed they were gone? Well, its not all just about eggs and bacon. The Eating out in Eden Guide is about restaurants, town shops, pubs, cafes, farm shops and local producers, who when working together are the pillars of the local economy. Food that doesn’t have to boast it’s as fresh from the packet as the day it was picked or frozen. As I have witnessed regularly, its food pulled from the ground when it’s needed, so it does go into a packet or bag when you buy it. Welcome to low mileage food. Welcome to the businesses that want to welcome you to Eating Out in Eden and supporting their businesses in Eden. My thanks to all those businesses supporting this first edition and those businesses already signed up for the July edition. The Eden Valley and its capital:
shopping, eating & exploring I was about 9 years old, when I remember being on the bridge at Appleby-in-Westmorland, standing on my tiptoes to look over the bridge wall to see the fish swimming in the river Eden. It was much later that I discovered Penrith, the Red Town, named because of its deep red stone buildings in the heart of the Eden Valley. Penrith was once the capital of Cumbria, a semi-dependent
state which, until 1070 AD formed part of the Kingdom of Scotland and Strathclyde. The two oldest streets, Burrowgate and Sandgate, date from the 13th Century. On the skyline are the ruins of Penrith Castle, once the home of Richard, Duke of Gloucester. On the Beacon, which is part of the north east side of the town, once at the top, the views of the town and in the distance to the Lake District mountains and Ullswater are as you have never seen them before. Just on the outskirts of the town, to the west on the River Eamont is Brougham Castle, an English Heritage site, which although is mainly castle ruins, still has some very accessible ramparts and towers with some fantastic views. The modern day Penrith is the hub of shopping in the area and still very much a
community market town. Yes it has many visitors and many more are welcome, but the town shops here in Penrith, unlike many towns in the UK, have a very high percentage of independent traders. We have local butchers, bakers, greengrocers, fishmongers, cake shops, an independent Coop, cheese and delicatessens specialists. We also have traditional tea rooms, cafes and restaurants, which contribute to an abundance of places to eat, drink and shop.

A visitor for the day? You’ll have a lot of ground to cover. The museum, a local theatre, an independent cinema, boutiques, outdoor clothing shops, sports shops, fishing tackle shops, specialist shops, gift shops and galleries. Most sports are catered for as Penrith has a leisure centre, golf course, tennis courts and indoor and outdoor bowling greens. It has sports facilities like any major town and serves a radius of about 10 miles.
Many of our readers will already know the Rheged Centre, but for those that don’t, we really recommend you take a look. It’s easy to get to being just two minutes from Penrith at the gateway to the North Lakes, and having plenty of free parking. There’s always something new to see and do at Rheged, and this year is no exception as they’ve just opened two fabulous new shops and a new art gallery! Splash Out! was opened in April, and offers a fresh approach to fashion that’s all about beautiful colour, great design and attention to detail with clothing collections from Avoca, Seasalt, Joules and Noa Noa. Restaurants & Worldly Tastes In our first Eating Out in Eden Guide, we have a small snippet of just some of the restaurants and takeaways that are in the area. In our revised edition later in the summer, we hope to have many more from Penrith and the Eden Valley. The restaurants in the area offer traditional Cumbrian dishes, good old fish and chips and apart from the pubs providing the area (details page 16 to 19) with a fantastic selection of locally sourced food, right here in Penrith we have Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Spanish and Thai restaurants. Not all are visible from the main roads. A walk around the secluded areas of the town will reap rewards. The same goes for the cafes and tea rooms. The Devonshire Arcade, hasn’t got any slot machines, but it does have some foodie secrets to discover including the Soup Shop, local producers and other shops. It’s also a short cut to the oldest part of the town, Burrowgate and Sandgate, worth a look..

Farm shops & locally produced products Close to Penrith, we do have a few farm shops. Some of these are working farms and some shops stock a range of farm shop products. The nearest farm shop to Penrith is the working farm, Carleton Hall Farm (below), the home of Neil and Jean Hodgson. Just outside Penrith, heading west on the A66, the Rheged Discovery Centre has many shops in its complex that stock a massive selection of locally produced foods. A little further along the A66 is Cocklakes Farm Shop (details opposite on page 15). Another local that I can’t not mention, is Ivinsons Farm Shop and Tea Room at Wetheriggs Farm, which is home to Michael and Joanne Ivinson. The shop sells everyday provisions, including milk, eggs, fresh vegetables, ready meals and also high quality fresh meat. The meat is sourced locally and when possible is home reared from the farm’s
herds. Joanne also offers a selection of home baked pies, casseroles, quiches, soups, chutneys, pickles, jams, marmalade, cakes, biscuits, tray bakes, and delicious desserts. Joanne’s marmalade is one of those products on my list of, it taste like it ain’t been messed about with! To finish off, make sure you try a Taste of Eden, traditional homemade ice cream. Taste of Eden ice cream is made in the lush and tranquil Eden Valley in Winskill, near Langwathby. The ice cream is made from a traditional recipe using whole fresh milk sourced from Hadderdale Farm, Great Asby, near Appleby. It is available in a wide range of flavours using special fruits and flavours from UK and Italian sources.
Carleton Hall Farm Shop On the road that runs around Penrith on the A686, heading towards Langwathby, you drive through Carleton Village and you wouldn’t know, as the Village is barely detached from Penrith. On the right hand side just after the Rugby club on the left, is the entrance to the Farm and Shop. Carleton Hall Farm is a working farm and The Hodgson family grows potatoes, carrots, leeks, turnips, cabbage, kale, courgettes, parsnips, swedes, barley and a few other things around Penrith. They also have a small dairy herd of Friesians and beef, which is grass fed. Carleton Hall Farm shop has 52 suppliers and that equates to a large selection of farm products from the region and other local producers. They have over 25 jams and preserves, 14 marmalades, 25 types of honey and 29 pickles. Also stocked are the everyday perishable dairy items, meat, poultry, eggs, bread, cakes and cooked meats. They have their home grown produce items when in season, which are sourced locally when needed to meet seasonal gaps in the fruit, veg and salad sections. They also have a frozen range and a gluten free range of products. Carleton Hall Farm also puts a fantastic seasonal hamper together any time of the year for any occasion, so just give them a call.

The new Rod & Reel Tea Room is not just an extension of buying local farm produce, which is reared on the farm or sourced within 30 miles, but an opportunity to try a range of products that are on sale in the shop. Try local cheese, home cooked pies, or one of the many traditional Venison or Cumberland sausages or other sausage blend varieties, that can include black pudding, sweet chilli, fruit, basil or even cheese. The pork is sourced from a local breeder and the bacon is prepared and cured on site.
When you cook it, it tastes like bacon, it cooks and smells like bacon, no water cooking in its own juices. The beef has been grass fed and hung on the bone for 21 days. It is so tender, you can cut it with a butter knife and then there is the lamb that has been fed on sweet parsnips. It not only tastes real, it tastes like it hasn’t been messed about with.
Borrowdale Honey that is only sold in the Farmshop. There is only one catch and that depends on how things are with the trout fishing on the day. Relax with a breakfast, light lunch, or afternoon tea. Take some time out to shop or fish. It doesn’t get much better and it’s a taste you can take away.

Pubs Pubs are something that the Eden Valley is not short of and for some villages they are the hub of what is happening. We have a small selection of pubs in this guide, although there are over 25 pubs in Penrith alone. The great thing about the Eden Valley isn’t just in the quality of the food served in the pubs, which reflects the locally sourced produce, but the availability of locally brewed beers. From the research completed for our guide, we reckon there are over 30 breweries, of which over 20 of these are micro brewers in Cumbria. Many of these are available to sample in the Eden Valley. The micro breweries are found in the basements of hotels, at the back of pubs and inns. There are of course the larger breweries like Jennings, who produce Cumberland Ale and also a number of beers come from Lancashire like Thwaites’ Wainwrights beer. A really local beer to try in the Eden Valley is Tirril beer.

The Stoneybeck Inn was totally refurbished and extended in 2010. In keeping with tradition, its exterior is as it has been for centuries. Inside this continues with Cumbrian stone walls and exposed timbers that have now been subtly updated, creating light and comfort. Situated at Bowscar, near Penrith, which is on the A6 just after you leave Penrith heading north, it is known locally for its quality food, events, conferences and weddings. Every day they serve traditional food, which is locally sourced where possible and fine wine and dine events run continually throughout the summer. A range of premium lagers and real ales are available and Stoneybeck also has gluten free alternatives. It is renowned for its carvery, its catering for small and large numbers and it caters for all family dinning. Katharine and Tommy took over the Queens Head Inn in Askham Jan 2010. Since then they have built a fantastic reputation for fresh, seasonal and locally produced (where ever possible) homemade food. Katharine has been a Coeliac for about 10 years and has always found it a hassle to go out anywhere to dine ‘as you can never be quite sure if the establishment fully understands all the ingredients that goes into making sauces - it’s hard to trust when you have been wrongly advised so many times’. ‘The Queens’ Katharine and Tommy jumped at the chance...’we wanted to create a dining experience that Coeliacs and non Coeliacs could enjoy together. All of our sauces and gravys are homemade and Gluten and Wheat Free; all of our sausages and burgers are rusk free and only contain meat and herbs and our Gluten Free Batter for our fish and chips is just superb and has many customers coming back for them time after time’. Sophisticated and child friendly are two phrases rarely seen together, however, contemporary restaurant Bojangles located in the heart of the pretty market town of Appleby in Westmorland has achieved the impossible and created a dining experience that you will enjoy with or without little people. The spacious interior with its oak flooring and cool blue walls boasts sofas to relax on whilst enjoying a morning coffee and a mouthwatering home made cake, as well as plenty of seating for indulging in a lunch time snack or evening meal. Recently refurbished, the interior is complemented by the delightful outside seating that looks onto St Lawrence’s Church, part of which dates back to the 12th Century. There are several child friendly dishes on the daytime menu as well as high chairs and spacious changing facilities. During the day Bojangles plays host to breakfast and morning coffee, lunches and afternoon teas, and then as the sun sets on the pretty town the candles are lit, the lights dimmed and the music slowed down
to create a stylish restaurant that is suitable for couples, families and party groups. The wine list is extensive and has been created with quality in mind; bottles start at a very affordable £11.95 and include a variety of whites, reds, rose, sparkling and Champagne. You’ll also find a wide selection of international lagers as well as beers from Allendale Brewery.
Whether you pop in for coffee and a scone, soup and quiche for lunch, or a three course evening meal you are guaranteed that your dish will be freshly prepared and cooked using local produce (where possible) to create a truly Cumbrian taste experience.
Booking isn’t essential for evening dining but it is recommended as there are often special dining evenings as well as live music which are always very popular.

Tea Rooms and cafes Tea Rooms and traditional homemade cakes are something that the Eden Valley is not short of. All with there own identity, some run as an extension of a farm shop. Others just like the farms, are all independent and individual in many ways. There are many cafes, which cater from breakfast throughout the day, including lunch and afternoon tea. Some are even open in the evening for dinner. The farm shop tea rooms, village and town tearooms, generally stock local products, so these are great places to sample and try before you buy.
