Dear Residents and Businesses What a year we are having in 2012, no sooner had we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with shared celebrations across Eden, Cumbria, Great Britain and extending across the world than the flags were out again for the Olympic torch passing through Eden. At home here in the Eden Valley, we are now into the show season. I really feel that summer has started with the arrival of the ever popular May Day Fairs in our local towns and villages and no matter what the weather throws at us the shows go on. It’s worth thinking about the planning that goes into each event and the many volunteers that come together in their communities to make these events a success; local residents, schools, clubs, organisations and businesses all pulling together. In this 21st edition of Eden Local we have just a brief snap shot of some of the current and future events taking place, if you want to promote an event, let us know. As a small independent business and publication, we try to cover a lot of bases. This month I had a really interesting chat with David Brass the CEO of the Lakes Free Range Egg Company (page 8). We have had some great feedback about the Richardson and Son article, which continues this month (page 10). I had a coffee with Judy Essenhigh, the owner of the Bewicks coffee house and bistro in Princes Street and we talked about the struggles her business has experienced, which of course is shared with others along Princes Street; much of this due to the repeated road works compounded by the current economic climate. So I want readers to think about the reasons businesses choose to advertise here in Eden Local. Behind every advertisement there is something the business wishes to communicate. For some it may be a fantastic reputation that they have carefully developed over the years that they want to remind people about, for others it may be a new venture that they want to launch. In these difficult times, people need little reminders that our local independents need your business. Not everyone has a budget to advertise all the time, however at Eden Local we hope that by putting a businesses name and details through just under 20,000 doors in the Eden Valley every month for under £15.00 is affordable. Behind each advert is a reason, a need and a requirement to attract local customers which is the essential lifeblood of any local business. So whilst we are constantly targeted by adverts and messages from national brands, we have many local businesses delivering great products and services, all easily accessible on our doorstep who need our support. Please remember it’s vital for local people to support their local businesses. As I reflected with Judy it’s the culture of the business that really matters and this is something you can feel when you step into a truly local business, which can only survive through your support. You don’t have to wait for the sun to shine, the doors are always open for business at your local independent
traders. Coincidently this issue of Eden Local is being distributed in the middle of the United States 4th July Independence Day celebrations. Perhaps closer to home we should celebrate our local independent businesses. Go on; let them know how important they are to your community.

Pasta with Peter Sidwell This recipe is a favourite around my dinner table. The smokeyness of the salmon against the sharpness of the capers and sherry vinegar works so well. It’s quick, easy, fresh and tastes fantastic. What more do you want!
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •
1 pack dried spaghetti pasta 3 tbsp of olive oil 6 slices of local smoked salmon 35g butter salt and freshly ground black pepper 2/3 tbsp of mini capers 2 tbsp of sherry vinegar 1/2 tsp of granulated white sugar 1 handful of flat leaf parsley
Here’s how Cook the pasta in a large pan of salted boiling water for 9-11 minutes. Meanwhile heat a large non stick frying pan. Slice the smoked salmon and add to the pan with a splash of olive oil. Season with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook until crispy. Add in the butter followed by the capers and sherry vinegar, then remove the pan from the heat. When the pasta is cooked pour through a colander. Add the drained pasta to the pan with the smoked salmon and capers. Mix together well with the chopped parsley and serve with a little grated parmesan cheese.

Why the Arcade? Following on from last month's article I asked the same question to a few people; both customers and business owners in Devonshire Arcade. The question was ‘Why the Arcade?’ It was propositioned to have two meanings; why shop in the arcade and/or why have your retail business in the arcade?
her Aunt Ethel 50 years ago, as a stall in the covered market area before retailing at unit No 3. After taking over from Aunt Ethel, Judith and her husband Gavin decided to add other meats to the range selling produce from animals raised by them at home on the farm. Today they sell the full range of a butchers shop traditional offerings and buy all the meat weekly from Penrith, Carlisle and Wigton Auctions. One word was repeated more than most when answering my question and that was ‘community’ the meaning was 2 fold – community between business owners and community hub for everyone shopping in the town. Paul at the Soup Shop told me he does the shopping for his soups in the arcade from The Fruit Marketer, Little’s for the meat, The Fish Shop and Crafty Baker for the bread.
Not only did I get some really positive responses but I learnt a little more about the history of the current shops and their owners. There is a balanced mix of new businesses and those with roots in the arcade for over 65 years. I was really intrigued to find out from Judith at Little’s Butchers that The Chicken Shop was in fact started by
Neil has had The Fish Shop in the arcade for about 14 years, his roots are in market stalls so to him taking an outlet in the arcade seemed like a sensible choice. It offered the social side of retailing, the chit chat with passerby’s, customers and other retailers, but also offers a warm and dry environment. There was one other business that I was keen to find out how long it had been trading and that was the Pet Shop, it seemed to me it had always been here, Misha told me told me that she’d taken over the shop 15 years ago and believed that it had been there for another 50 previous to that
phone: 01768 899111
but we didn’t know for sure – if anyone reading this knows more about the pet shop do please get in touch we would be keen to find out. Twinkle Toes of Penrith and Cumbria Photography have been retailing in the arcade since just before Christmas last year. Andon at Cumbria Photography explained that setting up his business in the arcade was all down to the simplicity of the lease which is great for anyone setting up a new business. Andrew and Liane from Twinkle Toes told me their business idea grew from redundancy for Andrew and Liane just finishing her maternity leave. Liane told me that she’d had the idea for a while then the timing just seemed right. They offer a whole range of clothing from 0 to 13 years and felt at the time that the shoppers in Penrith needed a bit more choice – and for them it has worked really well as they add nicely into the variety of unique outlets now in the Arcade. Both Henry at the Lemon Tree and Lan at Thai Food Cafe, another 2 new additions to the arcade, explained it was the vibrancy of the place, the number of people and combination of traditional offerings inter- mixed with the new that attracted them. Free WIFI is available throughout The Arcade, so whether it be to shop, socialise, eat, drink or just browse everything you need is under the one roof.

Local Egg that’s proving to be the best It was back in April that I first met the Miller family at their farm in Penruddock. I went there to talk about eggs; they have around 6,000 Free Range Shaver hens that produce an average of 300 eggs each per year. If you missed that story, the full article is available to read on line at www.cumbrianlocal.co.uk. To close the article back in May’s Eden Local, I wrote that I would be catching up with the Lakes Free Range Egg Company based in Stainton. In addition to collecting the eggs from the Miller’s Farm and over 40 other egg producers they also support their producers in a number of ways that relate to animal health and welfare meaning a lot less worry for their producers. To find out more, I met up with David Brass the CEO at the Lakes Free Range Egg Company. We did talk about eggs of course! I had received a lot of positive feedback from producers and customers alike and I was intrigued by the success of the company and wanted to know what the man behind it was really like. David grew up on the mixed family farm among dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep; so how did this help with his business philosophy? Being used to such a diverse environment the company breathes innovation. It sets very high standards that have been externally recognised. Recently they won the Food Business Innovation Award at the 2012 Pig & Poultry awards held in May. However, David’s experience hasn’t always been on the farm. We also discussed his 10 years in the RAF as a pilot flying Harrier jets. In looking at the precision of his business decisions and his determination to drive the business to be the best I could see that David was always aiming high! ‘The Lakes’ have set out a vision EdenLocal

to strive for the best egg. Animal welfare has been a key driver in much of its success. The company has a team of full time trainers who are part of a formal government approved scheme, who visit farms at least monthly, to advise on management and welfare issues and provide any training required by the company for its producers. As a company, they don’t just collect eggs; they have their own farm and breed hens. The relationship with all their producers extends to supplying them with the best feed and medical support. Hens that can just go about their lives without a care in the world, with no stress, treated in the right way reaps many rewards for the producers and the Lakes Free Range Egg Company. But how is this success measured? The average hen in the UK produces around 285 eggs a year. The average hen roaming free for the Lakes Free Range Egg Company produces around 309 eggs per year. The success of this local business keeps growing, not just locally but nationally. The Lakes Free

Range Egg Company will receive the Business in the Community’s (BITC) coveted National Big Tick award in two key categories – Rural Action and Sustainable Supply Chain. The Big Tick Award is an initial award and for those who excel, can go on to qualify for the National Awards for Excellence, which recognise the UK’s best examples of business that have a positive impact on society. They have made quite an impact with organisers because it is very rare that one company is shortlisted in more than one category. ‘The Lakes’ will be presented with their awards at the North West Event on 24 June , but they have already been informed that they have been shortlisted for the National Finals – again in both categories. They will present their entries to a panel of expert judges in London next month, before the final results are announced at the Awards for Excellence Gala Event on 27 July. Finally I agreed with David that we would have a return visit later in the summer, where we will do the complete tour and bring this to our readers in the Autumn.

160 years of John Richardson & Son (Part Two)
Lane, Penrith (now known as Brunswick lane) and this business was listed in the 1869 Slaters Directory of Cumberland. Dealing with home grown and imported timber, supplying many local joiners and builders, the joinery side of the business became very successful. In 1895 John and Thomas decided to get involved in funerals, conducting their first funeral in that year, whilst still assisting with the timber and joinery side of the business. The business continued to expand just like a family tree, which just keeps branching out as they also added a building contractors side to the business. From left to right Williams, Mcpherson, Lawes and, Hodgson
Last month we put together the first instalment of the history of one of the oldest family businesses in Penrith, we touched briefly on events that occurred in the year of the company’s foundation back in 1852. Using images that have been carefully stored over the years and original documents with district seals and signatures, in our presentation of part two we will revisit some of the milestones over the first hundred years. My thanks to Donald Richardson, the great grandson of John Richardson, the founder of John Richardson Timber Merchants and Joinery who is pictured here in the centre of this photo on a large sycamore trunk in 1914. Still to this day many customers ask about Donald but many may not realise that this coming November Donald will be celebrating his 105th Birthday! Looking back through town and district documents the business that emerged as John Richardson took over an existing timber merchants formerly William Herring of Great Dockray, all noted in deeds dating back to 1840 held in the family archives. After starting the business in 1852, John Richardson was joined by his son, George Richardson, eventually changing the name of the business to John Richardson & Son. George had thirteen children, however, only three sons; John Richardson, Thomas H Richardson and George W Richardson joined the family business, eventually becoming partners. As the business expanded it set up its premises in Scott
George (Junior) kept to Timber, which meant the collection, cutting, selling and delivering of timber locally with their own horse drawn wagons, the premises then having its own stables. In the early 1900’s the sawmill was run by a fixed coal fired engine. This was eventually replaced with electricity. In those days with the electricity supply so poor in the town, everyone knew when the saw was working as the lights would dim in the other local shops and homes and this was especially noticeable in the winter. In those days you could set your clock to the John Richardson & Sons work bell, which would ring every morning for the start of work, again at lunchtime and finally at the end of working day, it was heard by all across the town. With all of the Richardson & Sons businesses now firmly established, next month we will be looking at the 100 years which followed from the 1900’s and the links to the families in the community over these years.
The trunk of a Sycamore tree which was dispatched by Richardsons from Penrith Railway Station in 1914 and is thought to be one of the biggest piece of wood that has ever left the station. On the left is T.H. Richardson (Father), Donald in the middle and his Uncle G.W. Richardson on his right.

Walking with Keith Wood
Catbells
The ascent of Catbells must be one of the most popular walks in the Keswick area and rightly so, it’s distinctive shape is seen across Derwentwater from all along the eastern shore. With limited parking the ascent of the fell is best achieved from Keswick combining the walk with a trip across the lake using the Walkers Launch to Hawse End. 1. Take the launch from Keswick across the lake, disembarking at Hawse End at the foot of Catbells. Leave the jetty and head straight on up through the woods to reach the foot of the Catbells ridge. The well built path path immediately starts to climb fairly steeply up the ridge; keep to the main path and avoid taking any of the shortcuts. The path levels off before resuming the climb up a fairly eroded section leading to a plaque dedicated to “Thomas Arthur Leonard”. Continue up a little rocky scramble before the path levels off for a second time. After another climb the path levels off for a longer stretch along the ridge with outstanding views down to the left of Derwent Water. Drop down to a little col before resuming the upward journey for the last pull to the top. Nearing the summit the path loses its clarity up the loose, shaley surface, but follow any one of the numerous tracks continuing uphill all arriving at the same point. 2. From the airy summit, follow the only path along the line of the ridge which immediately starts losing height heading towards Maiden Moor. There is a good view now to the front left all along Borrowdale to Kings How with green fields in the valley bottom. This is easy walking, gently descending heading down to the col or depression between Catbells and Maiden Moor. 3. At the depression with its crossroads of paths, take the path to the left heading down towards Derwent Water. EdenLocal
phone: 01768 899111
www.edenlocal.co.uk
The path heads steeply down the flank of the fell on another repaired path, a bit like descending a staircase. The path zig zags down and along the fellside walking towards the Jaws of Borrowdale, losing height all the way. Ignore the first muddy path heading off to the left, keeping on the main path. Pass a green platform which makes a good viewing station across the lake. 4. On reaching a Y junction, the path splits into two; take the left fork on a clear path now doubling back north heading towards Skiddaw, losing some more height above a little plantation of pine trees on the right. At a T junction of paths by the wall, turn left again continuing on the clear path along the foot of Catbells. Pass a slate plaque and seat in memory of Sir Hugh Walpole of Brackenburn. Continue walking along the fellside with the road below, looking across to Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell. 5. Just before some woodland, the path joins the road for 10 yards in front of an abandoned quarry. Beyond the quarry rejoin the path rising gently above the road. The path continues to climb gently for quite a long stretch to regain a couple of hundred feet, before levelling off and finally dropping back down to meet up with the road at the end of the fell. Head back down to Hawse End Landings to take the launch back to Keswick. Full details of the route with map and photographs are in Keith’s “ Boot up Derwentwater”, which can be found in many local outlets including Penrith Outdoor Pursuits, the usual internet bookshops or directly from the author at: www.keithwoodphotography.co.uk

More leisure news in Eden . . . There’s no need to travel far this summer for a great choice of activities to keep you happy, healthy and active in 2012. With new gyms, packed programmes, a family friendly café and more, Eden’s leisure centres have lots on offer to keep children and adults of all ages entertained.
Excellent Sports and Leisure For All A new leisure partnership between Eden District Council and not for profit charity North Country Leisure began in April this year, with NCL taking on the management of facilities at Penrith Leisure Centre, Appleby Leisure Centre and Frenchfield Sports Centre. Centre programmes are being reviewed as part of ongoing development of services, with new sessions starting in September, including gymnastics; taster sessions are taking place during the summer holidays. Your feedback is always welcome so either complete a comments card at a centre or online, or email admin@northcountryleisure.org.uk
New Gym Developments! This summer will see development work taking place at both leisure centres to extend and upgrade the fitness gyms. Appleby Leisure Centre’s gym area was redecorated in June and a range of new ‘Life Fitness’ resistance and cardiovascular equipment was also installed. A first for Eden was the introduction of two Trixter bikes offering a virtual cycling experience in the comfort of an air conditioned gym. Work will start on Penrith Leisure Centre’s gym in August which will see the area extended to almost double its size to 280m2, following a zoned approach providing a new fitness ‘performance zone’, a ‘resistance zone’, ‘stretch zone’ and ‘cardio zone’. New ‘Life Fitness’ equipment will have the latest built in entertainment systems and there will be four Trixter bikes.
beActive for Less Save up to 10% off sessions on every visit to Penrith and Appleby Leisure Centres, with a beActive Leisure Card. Membership packages are also available to make keeping fit even better value for money. Additional discounts are also available for juniors, adults over 60, people on low incomes or those with a disability. Don’t be puzzled about your pounds Accountancy is not an Enigma (machine), and business owners shouldn’t have to crack the (accountancy) code to be able to understand their accounts. Understanding what your profit and loss and balance sheet are telling you is crucial to understanding much about your business and where it’s heading. And that’s what your accountant should be doing – unscrambling the numbers and explaining them in plain English to provide you with a clear picture of the state of your business. So it’s really worth investing some time with your accountant – it will most certainly pay dividends. We at Full Circle Accountancy will talk your language and present you with the financial clarity needed to develop your vision for the future. Langwathby On the Green In 1996 Jim Monkhouse a lifelong resident of Langwathby produced ‘Wind of Change’ his autobiography and it is this book that has helped me to share some of Langwathby’s history. Jim’s grandparents moved to Langwathby in 1887 when there were only 63 houses and a population of about 400 people, an average of over 6 people per household! This popular village has grown over the years and now has about 240 houses whilst still maintaining a positive community spirit. The village has grown by the addition of a number of small housing developments; I spoke with Mike Holliday the Parish Councillor, he feels the developments have been an asset, have not been excessive and gradually completed over a period of time so the village has been

able to keep its community heart. Mike’s family arrived in the village in 1891 on to a tenanted farm. In 1930 his grandfather was able to buy half of Town Head Farm where the Holliday’s continue to farm. Mark one of Mike’s son’s is now the main farmer at Town Head.

The Bailey bridge that takes you into the village from Penrith was built in 1968 and was only meant to last 10 years but 54 years later is still standing! The original sandstone bridge was built in 1686 and collapsed under pressure from a heavy snow fall and rain. Jim’s book tells me that when the bridge

In 2008 the Village Hall had an overhaul, on which the Parish council had taken out a 15 year works loan. It was agreed the burden of repayment would be shared by the Village Hall committee. Francis Flower who lived in the village at the time suggested to the committee that they host a scarecrow festival to raise funds. The first scarecrow festival took place in 2004 with just short of 100 scarecrows on display. The festival has become an annual event, only missing 2007, and plan for it to continue as along as it remains popular. It takes the 10 committee members 7 months to plan the event which takes place over the 2nd weekend in July. Village volunteers help set up the parking, clear litter, sell raffle tickets and trail sheets and furniture for the refreshments is set up and cleared down. Elaine told me ‘we were the first village in the area to do it and the support of villagers, locals and visitors has been overwhelming’. was built the village was in fact called Langanbye and had the most famous Horse race course in the North of England rivalling the Flatterly course in Yorkshire. There are records detailing Wrestling and Tug ‘o’ War matches taken place between local village teams and although it has long since been lost there was in fact the Langwathby Rounds Wrestling belt long before the current Lonsdale belt.
This year they are expecting between 100 to 120 scarecrows, villagers who take part get the opportunity to create a display of a single or group of scarecrows in their garden and the result of their hard work and imagination is stunning. Hoping for good weather, this year’s event should be particularly colourful, and it will be well worth a visit on 14th and 15th July.
Sporting success continues in the modern era; Graham Monkhouse, Jim’s son, played professional football in the mid 1970’s for Workington until a knee injury lead to the end of this career. So he focused on cricket for the Eden Hall team under the captaincy of Brian Nixon. Graham went on to play professional County Cricket at Surrey for 6 years. Brian’s son, Paul, enjoyed a 24 year cricketing career playing in the main for Leicestershire, a spell at Kent and most notably representing England at the 2007 World Cup and other one day internationals. Mike Holliday’s wife Jean ran for all England sports and son John played professional football during late 1980’s and early 1990’s for Carlisle and Workington before retiring at the grand old age of 28! Moving onto motor sports, Paul Bird is team manager and driver of PBMUK and is now established as one of Britain’s leading rally drivers. Seeded number one, Paul has just managed to clinch his first elusive victory with a stunning drive at the SOL Rally on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Rising British talent Oliver Turvey, also from Langwathby, has been a part of the McLaren Mercedes family for the last two seasons and his work this year continues to see him develop and test for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 programme. phone: 01768 899111

Your Voice, Your Choice now live on 87.7 FM As I write this brief update about Eden Fm Radio, after much hard work, the team of volunteers have just switched on the FM transmitter at 00.00 17th June 2012 for it’s second 28 day restricted services license (RSL). As this copy of Eden Local comes through your door we will be half way through this transmission and many people across Eden will have become aware of the local radio station’s presence in the community as it tours around towns and villages supporting local community events. On many occasions I have written about what this voluntary group is trying to achieve. As chairman of this group it is a proud moment when I reflect on what has been achieved already by the small

dedicated team. At this important stage in the development process, if you believe Penrith and the surrounding areas should continue to have its own local community station we need you to write in. We need e-mails, we need letters supporting the project and why you think Eden FM Radio should be given the opportunity to be full time on an FM frequency. As a group we will continue to support, local voluntary groups, charity organisations, clubs, schools and businesses. Whilst the Eden fm team await for Ofcom to confirm the date when the Eden FM team can apply for a full-time FM frequency community radio license, we are busy gathering the evidence that we need in order to complete the application, this includes; our plans and future intentions, our letters of support and importantly evidence of our proven track record. This will include the details of approximately 150 interviews of people from the community, drawn up from our activity during our 28 day licenses and the 24 hour internet transmission 7 days a week, since January 2012. Since the campaign launch in November 2010, Eden FM radio has always been branded as “Your Voice, Your Choice, in the community”. It’s now time to make that choice. Meanwhile, please enjoy the experience of enjoying hearing local people broadcast across the community. We have, what I can only describe as a brilliant team, which has been well received and supported in the community. It has created many opportunities for youth in Eden to be inducted into radio. It has also given media

And Finally...... We would like to thank everybody who has taken the time out to read the Eden Local community publication. A big thank you to all those who have let us know how much you enjoy Eden Local, whether by stopping us in the street, calling us or emailing in. If you would like to drop us a line about the Eden Local, you can write to us via email at info@edenlocal.co.uk or post to; The Editor, Eden Local Ltd, Sandgate House, Sandgate, Penrith, CA11 7TJ. We really do appreciate your continued support and feedback. So what comes next? Whilst many of you may be getting ready for your summer holidays and the schools breaking up soon, the Eden Local team will be busy working on our “Route 66 Eat In and Eat Outâ€? guide. We will publish a list in late July of the distribution outlets where you will be able to get your hands on a copy. Meanwhile as our readership extends 
online now to almost 70 countries and 500 locations outside of Penrith we have made some important links with local magazines in other areas of the country. It’s an interesting project but we will now be writing articles and stories about Eden to go into a community magazine in Sussex. We will be explaining and exploring the unknown side of Eden so that visitors travelling north will make the most of our businesses and the beauty that the Eden Valley offers. You can wait to be discovered or you can lead the way making sure you are discovered by contacting us at Eden Local. Next month’s Eden Local commences distribution from 30th July. Thank you to everyone who has helped with this edition and thank you once again for taking some time out to read your local, community free magazine.
