Identifying the difference is something we are now working on. Your independent, local co-op will stock locally sourced products and over the remainder of 2012, will be seeking out even more local products as we intend to be a hub of locally sourced low mileage foods. We are currently working with local producers offering them direct help and support. We are offering them fair prices, not under cutting them, reducing our carbon footprint, helping the farmers and local producers reduce the carbon footprint of local food and Cumbrian produced products. Dear Residents and Businesses A big thank you to the positive feedback received last month with our expansion into CA16. For those of you reading the Eden Local since its launch in November 2010 to areas in and around Penrith, with its initial 5,500 door to door distribution there will be no surprises when I say what’s coming next.... A special welcome to CA10 2 postcode; the residents and businesses in Eamont Bridge, Tirril, Lowther, Askham, Rosgill, Clifton, Yanworth, Helton, Whale, Butterwick, Howtown, Martindale, Burn banks, Little Strickland, Melkinthorpe, Clifton Dykes and Whinfell. Whilst a few Eden Locals have been circulated in your area you are now a part of a distribution across the Eden Valley of 19,888 (data captured from Royal Mail Customer finder 21st May 2012). In this months Eden Local, we start to celebrate 160 years of John Richardson and Sons (p 4 – 5). As a growing business network, we go through the doors of 1373 known businesses in Eden (excluding those working from home and businesses with no registered business address) and have been busy linking businesses to the benefit of the community (p 6 – 8). We continue this month in our quest for low mileage food and I returned to Penrith Driving Range and Golf Centre to dicuss professional tuition (p 29 – 31). My thanks to Sam for her work with the businesses in the Devonshire Arcade ( p 20 – 22) and pulling together this months feature on Appleby with help from Barry McKay (p 10 – 13). I know Sam particularly enjoyed meeting local deer face to face (p 14 – 15). As for me I have been pretty busy planning ahead and busy with the Eden FM Radio Project (p 39 – 41). I was out and about with the masses with the Outside Broadcast vehicle at Penrith Lions May Day Fair and I was also at the Langwathby Fair. One of the biggest events the radio will be supporting is the Skelton Show on 7th July (p 17), the Show is now to be held on the first Saturday in July in the picturesque setting of Old Park, Hutton-in-the Forest near Penrith, Cumbria. It is a popular traditional Cumbrian Agricultural show with something for all the family. With an annual attendance of 10,000 it is the largest village show in Cumbria and a real showcase for the countryside. See the large horticultural and industrial marquee and show classes for cattle, sheep, horses (including show jumping), dogs, vintage vehicles, fur and featured animals and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling. With well over 100 trade stands, a re-branded gifts and crafts tent, Skelton Food Hall, a wide variety of entertainment, music, food and bar it has a reputation for being a great day out in the country. Meanwhile, Eden FM Radio will be supporting many events this summer as it prepares to switch on the transmitter on 17th July. A few days after this Eden Local launches its “Route 66 Eat in and Eat out guide”, which will go to 150 destinations along the A66.

It began in 1852 This is the introduction to a story about a business and a family. Like the old photos and box of historical documents I was just recently passed, it signified the handing down of a prize possession that has passed through many hands for generations. An illustration of how the business began to where it is now. Over the future months we’ll cover the full story and then present the plan for the future to continue this successful local enterprise, all of which has made the name John Richardson & Son synonymous with Timber, Joinery, Funerals and building work in the local area; an institution as well as a long standing Cumbrian business. with the current Richardson’s team. More recently Eden Local was invited in behind the well known big green metal gates of the Roper Street main entrance to John Richardson & Son Timber Merchants. Where the shop that caters for so many of your needs in; timber, flooring, decorating, hardware and much more. Just a few doors down heading out of town is Richardsons Funeral directors which was origianaly started in 1895 by the Richardson family and is present today at 38 Victoria Road which was formely the Carelton Hotel.

always be sitting on the shelf but just ask one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff and they’ll be able to get it in for you. John Richardson and Son’s business for many years hasn’t been just selling timber it’s been about designing bespoke timber products from doors to floors, staircases, windows, fencing, decking, timber frames for buildings, roof trusses and loft conversations, yes too many to list! Following several meetings with the team, who is based at the company’s Timber Merchants Retails and Trade site, we have been planning the year to celebrate 160 years of successful service to the local community. Beyond the anniversary, in this year of so many national celebrations and events, in addition to the marketing and advertising of the current John Richardson & Son business, work has commenced on planning for the future development of the business to continue serving our community for many more generations to come. The image shows five or more shire horses pulling timber from the woodlands to the timber yard that was in Scott Lane (now known as Brunswick Road) and the site of Morrison Supermarket; one of the activities from the start of the business back in 1852. In the same year, elsewhere in the country, the first ever public toilets were opened in Fleet Street London, the first patient of Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children, London was admitted and HM Prison Holloway was opened as a mixed prison, known then as Holloway Castle. Amongst other historical moments from this year outside of the country; a man by the name of John Harvey Kellogg, surgeon, was to inspire the flaked cereal industry

and F.W Woolworth, US founder of the ‘Woolworth’ stores was born in the spring of this year. Something of almost spooky coincidence in this same year a man by the name of John Richardson, Canadian born writer died. Back home the Victoria and Albert Museum was founded; the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. Across the border in Scotland Prince Albert bought Balmoral Castle and Estate for Queen Victoria in the same year. Was there a Royal visit to tour local area at this time? Even closer to home William Burra Arnison having served his articles with Atkinson and Harrison Solicitors, Penrith was admitted to the roll in 1852 and at once commenced practice in Penrith on his own account.

There are many questions to be asked and gaps of knowledge to be filled and we would like help with the gathering of as much about the history of John Richardson and Sons as is possible. In this year of celebration, we want to really cover its history with your help. Something I find myself doing every month, every week, in fact, most days and not just Monday to Friday is to pull up a chair and have one to one discussions with client business owners and directors. For an inside look at how this happens I want share how the relationship with Dale Edmondson of Eden Valley Windows works. I speak to Dale at least twice a week and sometimes up to a dozen times in a single day. Eden Valley Windows are the main sponsor of the Eden Local publication so the working relationship is focussed on ensuring that they get a return on their investment. Eden Valley Windows were the 2nd business to sign up as an advertiser when the magazine was first launched in November 2010. The key strategy in 2011 wasn’t just about advertising windows, but was also about promoting the range of kitchens and the massive showroom in Penrith stocked with kitchens, bedrooms, windows, doors and conservatories, with displays that are constantly changing. So how does it work? Do we discuss windows, look at catalogues, talk strategy? It’s certainly not just about advertising and handing over your hard earned marketing budget to a designer with a free licence to come up with the advert of the century. Although many businesses actually do this. I work with many designers not just our own in house team, but before we go to design we have to ask a number of questions. For effective advertising, there needs to be an effective strategy. Here are some questions • What is the client advertising? • What should this advert achieve? Awareness? - More people in shop? Business leads? • What should the reader do when they see the advert? - Visit the client? Phone them? Just be aware of them? • Who is the target customer? Age / lifestyle / interests / income etc • In one sentence what is the message of this advert? EdenLocal

Are you better than your competitors? What are you doing differently? What’s your unique selling point? In almost 2 years of working with Dale and his team, we have written articles, co-ordinated events, built a new website, placed advertising in magazines, local press and radio; not just placed ads in Cumbria Local publications. Each campaign needs to have strategically placed advertising linked to the needs and costs of the campaign. Being in just one place can mean just one audience. In the early days of meeting Dale, he was well versed in ’If you always do what you have always done, you’ll always get what you always got’. Things do change, things we don’t always have a control over, events that we may not want but the reality is that as a business we have to do something about it. Whilst we have a plan and a working budget with Dale’s business, we also seek feedback, always work together, always discuss options with the team and then we get down to the business of what we are doing, what needs to be achieved and the costs. Eden Valley Windows is not just about windows, its about home improvements, its about a business that for 27 years has served the Cumbrian community, its residents and businesses. Local Optician, Mike Addison, who originally hails from Shap; has decided to put his twenty years experience in the optics industry to good use by opening up an optical practice in The Shire Hall in Appleby. Mike, who is a fully qualified Dispensing & Contact Lens Optician aims to provide a long awaited service for Appleby and all of the Upper Eden region – ranging from Kirkby Stephen, Brough, Warcop, Orton, Tebay, Shap, Kirkby Thore, Culgaith and of course all the villages surrounding Appleby! Mike has employed an excellent team to work along side him at the practice, which opened at the beginning of March. David Stone, Richard Nicholson and Stephen Penrose are Optometrists with many years experience within the eye care industry. Adding to the friendly and relaxed, yet clinically excellent feel of the practice are Optical Receptionists Anna Wharton and Rosemary Mandale – who are always on hand to make appointments either over the phone or if you call in in-person. When I met up with Mike recently to discuss the new business, it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn’t actually had a sight test since I was at school! This seemed like the perfect opportunity to find out what was involved. To start with Mike took a photograph of the inside of my eye and explained that this was hugely beneficial in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as Macula Degeneration, Diabetes and Glaucoma – even early signs of high blood pressure can sometimes be detected! He also checked my field of vision before I then had a thorough eye examination by Optometrist Richard Nicholson. As I had not had an eye test for many years, I was instantly made to feel relaxed as everything was explained as the test progressed. Mike has even invested in a device

that checks the pressure of your eye without the puff of air that can often put people off having a sight test. “The device we use is less invasive than the ‘puff of air machine’ and so far all the patients have made positive comments about the whole procedure,” said Mike. Regular sight tests are essential, especially as we have an aging population. Most conditions if detected early enough can either be dealt with or monitored by your optician. If any problems are detected then the optician can refer directly to the hospital eye department if necessary. Early sight tests in children are also important as conditions such as a ‘Lazy-eye’ can be present in as many as 1 in 10 children. Children under 18 years who are in full time education receive free eye tests, as does anyone over the age of 60. A private eye exam costs £28 which I felt was incredibly reasonable for the service I received. Most people should have their eyes examined every two years unless they are advised other wise by their Optician – this might be due to the risk of Diabetes or Glaucoma.

Any community is made of the people who form it and who care for and about it; in this Appleby-inWestmorland is far from unique for the same can be said of many towns, villages and even hamlets throughout Cumbria and elsewhere in the country. Local shops and businesses play a significant part in the formation and progression of any community but they must have the support of people who will either buy their products or use the services offered. Many small Cumbrian towns are in the pleasant position of supporting a host of local commerce and these towns present a pleasing streetscape to the eyes of both residents and visitors. Such towns boast shops with local names on the facia boards; the ‘could be anywhere’ syndrome of the same brand-image fronts of banks, building societies, chain stores and, increasingly, charity shops is less of a feature within

the county than is often found elsewhere in the country. A community is however, more than its people; it is a subtle blend of awareness of and pride in its history allied to a concern for both its present and it future. Although history may be thought to have largely passed Appleby by – at least since the marauding Scots sacked the town in the late fourteenth century – such is not infact the case. People connected with the town have played their part in some of the noteworthy events of the history of England. Appleby is not unique, but is certainly unusual, in not having had a lord of the manor. The last time it did was when Thomas á Becket was murdered, one of his attackers being Appleby’s then overlord whose holding was taken back by the King thus making the town a royal borough, a distinction it still proudly

retains. Lady Ann Clifford’s contribution to the town’s history is too well-known to need repeating here, as is Jack Robinson’s; but who remembers that one of the publishers of Foxe’s ‘Book of martyrs’ was an Appleby man; that the great William Pitt was once the town’s M.P.; that an admiral who fought a sea battle with the founder of America’s navy hailed from one of the town’s parishes; that John Wesley had a tree named after him, wrongly as it happens for he didn’t preach there; that a treason trial took place in the town; that the last public execution in the county was held on the field that now houses the famous, if inaccurately named, Appleby Horse Fair; that an important Victorian blue-stocking lived for many years in the vicarage; or that Beatrix Potter married into an Appleby family. Preservation of the town’s history is in good and committed hands for the town can claim an active and knowledgeable archaeological society whose digging, literally and metaphorically, is revealing more and more about the area’s from pre-history to the early-modern period. The Appleby-in-Westmorland Society, among its other interests, is now the guardian of a huge collection of copies of photographs of the

town covering over a century of its visual history and is gradually accumulating an archive which will, eventually, be made available to scholars and other interested parties. There is also a record society which has published two combined historical directories of all the trades and professions practised during the long nineteenth century in both Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, the former being described on Border TV as ‘an historic Yellow Pages’, and a new expanded and revised edition of Chris Wilson’s splendidly discursive history of the town’s pubs will be published later in the year. Furthermore, Barry & Viv McKay’s historic town guide has recently appeared in its third edition; illustrated from old wood-engravings and with more recent drawings by Jack Marshall and Fenton MacCrae, it is available from the Courtyard Gallery and the town’s Tourist Information Office, or from the publisher: Barry McKay Rare Books.

Deer ’n Dexter

I was heading for my meeting with Jane and Peter at Old Stoddah Farm near Penruddock when I turned left off the A66 on to a beautiful country road heading down hill surrounded by the most beautiful views of the Lake Districts Northern Fells. Hidden in a quiet valley Jane and Peter run their business Deer ‘n’ Dexter. They provide high quality red meat from their herd of 300 Red Deer and 135 Dexter cattle hence the name. I have visited quite a few farms over the years including vast sheep farms in both Canada and Australia but have never seen deer being farmed so this was going to be a first. Commercial deer farms really started about 40 years ago in the UK and New Zealand. 1,500,000 deer annually are now farmed in the NZ and 35,000 in the UK.

Peter and Jane are both self taught farmers and the business has evolved from a starting point of needing something to graze the land of 90 acre farm they had just acquired back in 1990 and they wanted animals that were a bit different so ventured into deer farming. After foot and mouth they looked at some alternative and that’s when the Dexter cattle arrived. Jane told me that the development of the meat retailing side of the business hadn’t been a planned thing it just evolved due

In the main I spent my time with the deer and I had the most amazing experience. As we approached the large 6ft 6” gate Jane called ‘Hi Boy’s’ and they all turned and headed slowly towards us, most of the herd were a little curious but all are shy –all but one who wanted me to fuss over him like you would a dog and who gave a little nudge to remind me that to stroke him was ok. He decided I was his new best friend, but don’t get complacent as deer can be very dangerous their antlers are

a weapon, but I was in safe hands. All the deer really did seem content in their home with acres of nurtured land to roam. The popularity of venison grew dramatically last year and just last month Scotland Food and Drink reported that they were struggling to keep up with the demand which between 2006 – 2009 grew by 34% from £34m to £42m in the UK. The shortfall is being imported mainly from New Zealand with an estimated increase of 25,000 farmed deer annually required to meet the ever growing demand. Why you may ask – well have you tried Venison lately? Farmed Venison doesn’t carry the strong flavour that wild venison can, it is much more subtle and a very healthy, economical meat. Jane explained to me that the meat is so lean that if you where eating a steak, for example, then a 6oz venison steak would be the equivalent to an 8oz beef steak as there is virtually no fat. The Dexter is a traditional breed which has more fat “marbling”, than you find in a supermarket type of beef. The colour is a little darker, for two reasons; due to the breed and because it is properly hung for 3 weeks to produce a tender and better flavoured meat. growing, with over 4,100 Dexter cows registered last year by the Dexter Cattle Society in the U.K. - double the figure for 2000. Jane and Peter are supported by a team of six on the farm and in the meat business, including their own resident butcher Gordon Clark whom many of you will know from his years of trading on the Penrith high street. Home Grown Eggs, Straight from the Garden Following on from our feature on local egg production with the Miller family of Penruddock last month, our second article on our trail of the chicken and the egg is looking into some key tips and advice about keeping your own chickens. We also have some top tips from Terry Bowes of Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary. Wetheriggs have about 40 rare and minority breeds of chicken ranging from: the large Jersey Giant down to the smallest Serama; the oldest British varieties like the Derbyshire Redcap and the Red Dorking to the world’s oldest variety, the Appenzeller; the very feathery Cochin to the Transylvanian Naked Neck. Lots of Chickens and varieties and I’m pretty sure Terry likes talking chickens! Terry’s Top Tips are 1. Do your research -but remember your hens may not read the same books as you! . Food: About a quarter of a pound of feed per hen per day. Hanging feeders prevent wastage. Fresh water daily. Hens are omnivores- so bugs are good! 3. Space per hen: 2 square feet in the hen house 4 square feet in the run (more is better). 4. Good ventilation: Helps prevent odour and protects the hen’s lungs. 5. Secure floor from digging predators (including rats). Use carbonaceous bedding. 6. Hens like to roost; make sure they have perches. 7. Face the coop south or as near south as you can. 8. Protection from the weather: 9. Shade in summer and protect from cross-drafts in winter. 10. If you want more eggs in the winter, introduce artificial light and maybe even a little heat. When it comes to free range eggs and barn eggs, there is always debate about the sources and conditions. Something I’ve taken into consideration in my findings and the tips that Terry has presented,

is that chickens should be given the option to move about freely and generally to be able to behave as chickens. The battery style egg production now banned in the EU, which we covered in last month’s article, meant each hen having the space of around the size of an A4 piece of paper in a cage. Compare that to free range, where each hen is allowed the space of around 64 sheets of paper. This is just one example of the different standards of husbandry; there are many more. Free range allows chickens to be chickens and we hope natural creatures of habit. Hens are flocking birds, they tend to stick together. I’ve seen hens in gardens they tend to move around staying quite close together. Sometimes a bigger the flock can mean that the area around the shed becomes stripped of vegetation and can become a dustbowl in warm weather. Free range hens may have the benefits, but sometimes they don’t always take up the full distance between their shed and the perimeter fence, taking full advantage of their undoubtedly better conditions. Devonshire Arcade Towns arose for the purpose of trade and for centuries trade focused around markets and fairs. The 14th century housewife would buy what she required from stalls which were regularly set up on market days. Over time some of the stalls were replaced by permanent shops often with living space. By the late 17th century England and Wales had about 40,000 shopkeepers, according to the estimates of the pioneer statistician Gregory King. The Galeries de Bois opened in Paris in the 1780s and was the first arcade to be built but the boom came in the 1820’s. London’s first arcade was built around 1816. By this time many towns and cities also had a covered market which provided a safer and sheltered area to shop. What the original Devonshire Arcade provided was a mix of the two; the market arcade with the enclosed shops at the front and the stall area at the rear. The local Board of Health; the town's first municipal governing body, the equivalent of Eden District Council were responsible for erecting the Market Arcade. In many ways what is now known as Devonshire Arcade has

stuck to its original roots. Thanks to Judith Clarke from the Penrith and Eden Museum for providing us with the old photo and this info: ‘An archway off Devonshire Street was built to mark the entrance to the Arcade, erected by the Local Board of Health in the 1860s. It led to a spacious Market Hall which accommodated stalls for fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, butter and other dairy produce, and live poultry. It was also the venue for a wide range of events such as concerts, lectures and election meetings’. Visually a lot has changed, but the nature of the trading in Devonshire Arcade has stuck very close to its origins but with a number of independent retailers with a wide choice of shopping to meet today’s needs and, you can be safe in the mind that all profits stay well and truly on our door step and in our community. As you enter the archway from Devonshire Street you are met by a wide array of shop windows offering not only the traditional Butcher Baker Fishmonger and Greengrocer but also a health food shop and shops selling pet supplies, men’s wear and high end shaving supplies, ladies wear, children’s and babies’ clothing, a shoe shop, a florist, a hairdresser, a bridal shop, a photographer and photo framer, a greetings card shop and a shop selling knitting wools.

The Professional Approach to Golfing at Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range by Lee Quinn

In our April issue of Eden Local, we made a start with our season of golf stories with an insight to ideas on how you might get started playing golf. We presented an overview of the Penrith Driving Range, its 9 hole course and its golf shop and facilities. On our next visit, I took some time out to learn more about golf, but this time it was with their Golf Pro and instructor; Craig Goodfellow who is based at the Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range. How did it begin for Craig? Well, as he explained, when he was 8 years old, his dad would take him out with him when he played golf at Brampton Golf Club. Craig would caddy and also got the chance to have a go. He went on to mention that he used to get together with a bunch of about 15 other kids in school holidays and they would all meet up at the Stonyholme Municipal Golf Course in Carlisle. So from an early age, right through his teens, he was teeing off. His first properÂ taste of success was in qualifying to play for England school boys in 1993 at the age of 17. Were there ever any other sports, is a question you have to ask someone whose life has centred around one sport. Craig was also into badminton and actually got to playing at county level. Interestingly, he went on to explain that it really helped his golf; racket sports

like tennis, badminton and squash are all good for developing ball, hand and eye co-ordination. Have you ever taken your eye off the ball? Well, going back a few months, I was so keen on wacking the ball down the driving range and looking to see how far I had smashed it, that it was a regular shocker to see the ball was still there in front of me on the tee. thought then was that I was never that good at squash or tennis, but at least with golf, I wasn’t hitting a moving target. Craig is passionate about his golf. At the top level, like any sport, it’s always a question of funding and sponsorship, but he fits it in. Craig has been fortunate enough to have played with some of the best on an international, national and regional level. Here are just some of his achievements • Northumberland & Durham Open Champion 2001 • Winner of the British Assistants Championship 2001 • Cumbrian Classic Champion 2002 • Represented England in the PGA European Team Championship 2002 • A member of the winning team for England in the three man PGA European Team Championships in 2004 • 2006 NE & NW PGA Player of the Year • Represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup Match versus the USA in Georgia in 2007 • Cumbrian Masters Champion 2008 • Represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup Match versus the USA in California 2011 • 2008 NE & NW PGA Order of Merit Winner • 2011 Club Professionals Champion for GB&I The actual list of Craig’s achievements is twice as long. More recently, he landed the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at The Belfry last year, qualifying him for an array of top tournaments in Europe and the United States. With his feet still firmly on the ground, he believes he has the perfect balance of playing golf and being able to pass on his skills, knowledge and experience. He qualified as a PGA teaching professional 15 years ago and he lives his dream of playing golf and teaching golf at all levels. Over the years, methods have changed, technology and the science of golf have developed all shown in the changing dynamics of the game. Craig has taught golfers of all standards from beginners to professionals. In Craig’s own words, “no matter what level golf you play, golf tuition is an essential part of your golf development.” “From beginners, where all the correct set up positions can lead to a more rapid road to improvement, to the more advanced player where he or she

has found their level and cannot improve beyond that point without professional help”. Golf tuition does not have to be daunting. Craig says that he discusses with his pupils what their capabilities are and what they can achieve personally. Whether you play once a month or practice three or four times a week, realistic changes can be made so you can make improvements. Craig continues by saying that there are so many areas of the game which you can improve on with sometimes the smallest of changes. This makes it very achievable to reduce your scores. He has had pupils in the past who by making a small improvement to their putting have increased their confidence and have gone on to enjoy their game much more. So book a lesson today and see how much you will enjoy the challenge of improving your game! At Penrith Driving Range and Golf Centre, they are fortunate to have two PGA golf tutors. Most days apart from Saturdays are covered by Craig and on Saturdays, it’s Paul Jenkinson. Paul, a professional in his own right, is involved in a number of golf activities across Cumbria. He is also a Cumbria Futures Golf Academy coach. He joined Penrith Driving Range and Golf Centre in 1996. Paul guided the career of European Tour star Gary Lockerbie for 12 years as his coach, prior to starting his teacher-training course at the University of Cumbria back in 2007, but whilst he stepped off the circuit, his track record as both a professional golfer and PGA coach is still maintained through his activity at Redhills. The Penrith Driving Range and Golf Centre is fully equipped with a private individual teaching bay, including video analysis and many training aids. The driving range also has a 9 hole course and a short game area which allows Craig to cover all aspects of your game. So do not hesitate to call and book your first lesson! Last month, we invited people to have a go. This month, we are giving you another reason, whether you are totally new, a beginner, a seasoned golfer or maybe you’re someone who needs that extra tip towards that next level. In June 2011 Frazer Millar, a qualified horticulturist, proudly purchased the Green Thumb franchise in the Carlisle and Penrith areas. Having previously worked for the Ribble Valley Green Thumb franchise for a number of years, Frazer started in June 2011 with only 30 clients and already services in excess of 450 very satisfied customers. From this month through to Spring next year, I’ll be trying something new. Periodically, I’ll be dropping in an article about the progress, products and services of Green Thumb. Last year I tried a DIY lawn treatment. I bought the spreader and the nutrients. I didn’t really know what I was doing! A couple of days later my lawn looked like it had been hit with a blow torch, whilst it eventually recovered, the weeds were still very healthy and the moss, like a designer carpet, in certain areas still needed sorting. I like to enjoy my garden and that little green square of it deserves more, but in between all the other jobs in the garden, I only have time to cut it. If I had the time to walk around on it with spikes on my boots, I would. I’m hoping for a tailor-made lawn unique to my soil, our climate and weather conditions that will make the kids, guinea pigs and the wife very happy. For me, yes a bit of mowing, but the rest enjoying. I made a start and handed my lawn over to Frazer, both the back and front lawns have been given the Green Thumb Spring treatment. It’s about 6 weeks on now, and the lawn is ready for its fourth cut. So far, it’s a 3 out of 4 from the family; the guinea pigs are none too happy as there aren’t any dandelions any more! Brothers Water & Hartsop

This popular low level walk is equally suited to a Sunday morning stroll or a sunny summer evening. Looking down on Brothers Water from Kirkstone Pass it is easy to imagine how Brothers Water was probably an extension of Ullswater at the end of the last ice age. It eventually became a separate lake in its own right as silt and debris washed down from the surrounding fells over the intervening millennia. The lake is relatively shallow with reed and water lily beds. Originally called Broad Water, the name was changed in the 19th Century in memory of two brothers who were drowned in its waters whilst ice skating in 1785, an event that Dorothy Wordsworth recorded in her diary some 20 years later. The walk follows the lakeshore with the possibility of an extension which passes through the nearby picturesque hamlet of Hartsop. Now quiet, Hartsop was formally a hive of industrial activity with two mines and quarries above on Caudale Moor, the population was once bigger than that of Patterdale or Glenridding. The buildings are from the 17th Century and have characteristic stepped gables, circular chimneys and ‘spinning galleries’. 1. Park in Cow Bridge Car Park to the north of Brothers Water near the village of Hartsop. Leave the car park through a gate onto a well made track. The walk beside Goldrill Beck heading towards Brother’s Water passes through the hazel and oak of Low

Wood. Upon reaching the lakeshore the path continues on with views across the lake to the shapely dome of Hartsop Dodd, with Grey Crag on the horizon. The track continues through to the end of the woods and quickly reaches the head of the lake before continuing on to Hartsop Hall. 2. The path follows round the back of Hartsop Hall and swings round to the left to join the lane heading towards the campsite at the end of Brothers Water. Cross the little wooden bridge over Kirkstone Beck and proceed through the campsite passing the rear entrance to the Brotherswater Inn. 3. Just before the main road at the entrance to the Sykeside camping park take the permitted footpath to Brothers Water on the left. The path passes the silted up southern end of Brothers Water before meeting the lakeside once more with the broad shoulder of Place Fell to the front and the whale-back ridge of Hartsop above Howe to the left. Enjoy the stroll along the lakeshore path meandering beneath the trees shortly to reach a kissing gate through a fence into a pasture, where the route heads up towards a wall and the road. Simply take the footpath beside the road to complete the circuit back at the Car Park. Cumbria Oak You may notice a subtle change in the name of Cumbria Pine to Cumbria Oak, the reason for the change is simple – it is all down to what the customers want. This year the Cumbrian Local publication team, embarked on a new project. Our aim is to produce the ultimate guide for the ultimate route which we estimate to be probably the oldest route 66 in the world. There are a few others, the most famous probably that in the USA, but can you image, putting in an internet search for route 66 and it lands you in Cumbria? The Transition to Transmission at Eden FM Radio, We’re Back by Lee Quinn

It is with great pleasure and appreciation that I can confirm our local Co-op, the Penrith Cooperative Society has agreed to become the station sponsor of Eden FM Community Radio. It marks the culmination of a two year campaign, which has received much support from the community it serves and that continues to grow in support. Our thanks to our new sponsor and on behalf of the Eden FM Radio team of volunteers, we look forward to a new chapter and strong links with an institution of a truly local brand and business, which has served the community for over 122 years. It’s hard to imagine that it was 2 years ago the project actually started for Eden FM. On 9th June 2010, the first correspondence was sent to Ofcom, in line with Ofcom policy to register an expression of interest for Penrith and the surrounding areas. What is an expression of interest? • Source - http://consumers.ofcom.org. uk/2010/04/community-radio-the-next-phase • An ‘expression of interest’ should include: • the name of your organisation • the area you wish to broadcast to (or location of the service) • a short description of the community you wish to serve • your contact details These ‘expressions of interest’ will help Ofcom plan

how to proceed with the next phase of community radio development (end source) Not all areas of the UK will be open to applications. Much of this is down to band width availability. Two years on and after many press releases via Eden Local and campaigning for Eden FM radio to be the voice and the choice of the community, there is not much time left before we will be submitting our full time application. The Ofcom window for community radio applications for Cumbria to be submitted is scheduled for the second half of 2012. We anticipate this announcement to be posted in late June on the Ofcom website. We then have three months in which to complete the application process and then we wait. Subject to the volume of applications, our track record and the support we have, which all has to be submitted with the application, we should then find out between October and December 2012 whether the dream and a 2 ½ year campaign have been successful. For the team of volunteers at Eden FM Radio, based at its station premises in the Cumbria Mini Centre, Ullswater Road Garage Penrith, it’s a tremendously busy time. To recap for those new Eden Local readers who have just received their first or second Eden Local, in CA16 and CA10 2, on Friday 25th November 2011, Eden FM Radio transmitted on the 87.7 FM frequency for the first time, with a 28 day trial transmission. Permitted only one transmission on FM once

every 5 months with a maximum of 28 days RSL (Restricted Services License), the gap was too great to build on the momentum of its first transmission when it switched off on 22nd December 2011. The radio silence between transmissions was viewed by the team and on the emails received as too long for its growing listening audience to wait. From early January 2012, Eden FM Radio became a fully licensed internet radio station. Whilst on air over the last four months, key volunteers of the team, Andy, Sian, Martin and Steve have volunteered much time in the rebuilt Eden FM studio one and they have created a studio two, as a secondary back up studio, which is also a production suite. It was 6 months ago that we celebrated the first transmission. The transition to our next FM broadcast transmission, which is now scheduled to commence 00.00 hrs on Sunday 17th June to 14th July 2012, is attributed to seasoned support and continual support from the community. Recently the radio vehicle has been in Penrith supporting the Penrith Lions May Day, we were at the Langwathby May Fair and over the Jubilee weekend the team was at Kirkby Stephen Summer Fair. On 8th June, we plan to be in Appleby for a brief coverage of the Horse Fair. These are events prior to the live transmission. We are ambitiously aiming to achieve live shows from Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range on the morning of 17th June, then in the afternoon it’s off to Greystoke to the Boot and Shoe to cover some live music. THE OLYMPIC TORCH PASSES THROUGH EDEN – 20TH JUNE and Paralympic Games later this year, the iconic Olympic Flame is working its way around the United Kingdom and will eventually reach the Olympic Stadium on 27th July for the Opening Ceremony. The Eden Valley will come under the world spotlight on 20th June when the Torch passes through with a number of local sporting personalities carrying the Torch. There is a strict timetable as it goes along with the following times set – • Brough - Upper Street – New Road 16.03 - 16.08 • Appleby – Bongate – The Sands - Battleborough 16.19 - 16.36 • Penrith – Bridge Lane- Ullswater Community College – King Street – Middlegate – Scotland Road 16.55 – 17.41 There are lot of celebrations and activities planned to go around

these and organisations are working to highlight this special event in Brough, Appleby and Penrith. In Penrith the underlying theme is to show how much sport there is in the area. The organisers want as many sports people to come along, dressed in their sporting attire with their sports equipment and join a procession which will follow the Torch. The idea is that these sport people with assemble in Victoria Road and south end of King Street to see the Torch pass by. There will be banners for different sports and the sports people should fall in behind the banner appropriate to their sport and then process along King Street; Devonshire Street and to Middlegate - SO PLEASE GET THOSE SHORTS OR TRACK SUIT OUT AND COME ALONG AND JOIN THE PROCESSION - ESPECIALLY CLUBS AND CHILDREN

87.7 FM from 17th June 2012 In the Town Centre there will also be a number of sporting demonstrations before and after the Torch passes by starting at 4.00pm through to 7.00pm – something for everyone to enjoy – as well as stalls and other activities. It is hoped that cafes and restaurants as well as shops will remain open till after 7.00pm to add to the occasion. At the 7.00pm there will be a sporting film at the Penrith Cinema organised by the newly formed Friends of the Cinema – details available at the Cinema.
