Penrith Co-op Society Hampers, Beers & John Crouch Demos John Crouch was back in our Burrowgate Kitchen in October. This time he was making use of what a lot of us throw away when we carve out those Pumpkins. Pumpkin Jonny Cake, Pumpkin and Fish Stew, Roasted Pumpkin and Apples, the traditional Pumpkin Pie and Apple Pizza. These were all prepared and presented, with John’s recipe cards to take home. John is back in the Kitchen 28th November, with ideas for Christmas and just before the big day he will be back in the Kitchen 20th December Talking Turkey. He’ll be serving up ideas on Turkey for two. During the next two demo’s, in association with the Eden District Council Food Safety Team John will also be focusing on the importance of cooking your poultry this festive season, as part of Eden District Council’s Talking Turkey campaign.

PUMPKIN AND FISH STEW Method

Ingredience • 2 tablespoons oil • 1 medium onion • 3cm (1in) ginger root, peeled & grated • 400g (1lb) prepared pumpkin • 1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce • 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar • fish stock • salt pieces • 400g (1lb) cod, in 4 piece

In a large saucepan, fry the onion and Chop ginger root in the oil for 5 minutes. the pumpkin into smallish chunks and add it to the saucepan with the Tabasco sauce, sugar and vinegar. Add just enough fish stock to cover, stir gently to mix everything, then place the fish on top. down Bring the liquid to the boil, then turn for the heat and cover the pan to simmer about 25 minutes, until the fish is cooked. fish out To serve, use a slotted spoon to lift the stew. onto plates, then add a portion of the

350g (12oz) pumpkin purée 250g (8oz) treacle 125g (5oz) plain flour 100g (4oz) maize meal or polenta 250ml (8floz) sour milk pinch salt 1 egg, beaten

Apple Pizza

Preheat the oven to 350ºF (180ºC/Gas Mark 4) and grease a baking tin, about 20cm (8in) square. a Mix all the ingredients together to tin smooth batter. Pour it into the baking serve in and bake for 30 minutes. Cool and squares straight from the pan.

I have many people in the community to thank for helping what started out in November 2010 as a small magazine with a 6,000 distribution in Penrith. It is now what you see, a slightly larger magazine but probably with the largest distribution across Cumbria, averaging its new 2013 – 2014 year at 23,800 per month. All 50 editions are available to read for free at www. cumbrianlocal.co.uk The publication has grown in popularity with its readers. It is now established and recognised as a key communication vessel in finding and developing new business for local businesses. We have recommendations and feedback on page 10 from some of those who have been working with Cumbrian Local, formerly and still known to many as your Eden Local, in a special feature ‘We enter year 4 through your door’. This is a triple celebration, bordering on quadruple. Back in 2010, one of the four key reasons the magazine was set up, was to raise awareness of the Eden FM Project. This time three years ago, I was writing my first of over 40 articles about the project. As I set out to write this introduction, I am on a bit of a wobble as I have just received a call from Paul Boon, Senior Radio Executive at Ofcom who has just informed me that Eden FM Radio have been awarded a full-time community radio licence. On pages 6 – 7 we have a very current article, which is called ‘From an Idea to Reality’. In our 50th edition, we have six new businesses advertising and several local organisations that have come on board with Cumbrian Local. ‘On board’ becoming a familiar expression as we have an update on the Penrith and Eden Valley Monopoly project and helping with this project, the Cumbrian Local and Eden FM Radio development in the southern part of the Eden Valley, it is a pleasure to welcome Caroline Gunning. With her expertise and experience of her own local business, Crimson Chameleon, based in Appleby and her involvement in local community projects, Caroline’s first of her regular articles is Eden Entrepreneurs on page 16. With Halloween and Bonfire celebrations passed and some sudden dives in temperatures below zero, we are half way through ‘Movember’; no it’s not a typo, just a growing, fantastic world and national cause which Cumbrian Local is happy to support. Full details are on page 18. It is great to achieve some small milestones with the publication. The success of the Eden FM project and the Monopoly project, highlight the progress which has been made in 3 years. My thanks to all those who have over the years called the office, sent emails with positive feedback and been so supportive in conversation when I have been out and about. It is because of this commitment and support that your local magazine has grown in a recession, offering our readers and business, we hope, something positive. Let’s finish our opening with some more good news. This is for our readers in Appleby. This month’s Cumbrian Local is brought to you from the 1st Appleby Scout troop. Many hands make light work and this work comes with the reward of regular funding from their local magazine in return. The 4 week licensing cost was going to be in the region of £6,000 and with a Penrith Lottery grant of £2,500 matched with business support through advertising and sponsorship, we could afford to get on air. This with an Eden District Council Community fund of £3,000 to purchase sufficient second hand studio equipment, meant that Eden FM could remain on air online after the FM frequency trial which launched Eden FM.

I’ll start this re-cap and special feature off, but the radio is about people and community, and for that reason I have asked others to help with this article. The vision was borne on the back of an idea and experience of a previous community radio project. Who launches a local magazine and a community radio campaign in the middle of a recession when nobody has any money? And that was my point. June 2010 was the best time to do it, when it would help businesses more and offer affordable advertising for those that needed.

There was no money and £10,000 was needed to get the station, Eden FM on air for a 4 week trial transmission. Mark Windle, the owner of Ullswater Road Garage, had the foresight to help us with the purchase of some equipment and offered us a rent-free period

From all the team, past, present and now future, we would like to thank Mark Windle and all the staff at Ullswater Road for sticking with this idea. Also to thank is Andy Jackson, Joint Managing Director of Reeds Printers (now H & H Reeds) and then Chairman of the Penrith Lottery, because from an early stage in both the Eden Local and Eden FM projects, he was a true supporter. The support we have received from Eden District Council is something that has evolved and developed. Not many people understand how to build a radio station and what the potential of community radio

The project really started when I met Steve, alias ‘Toby la Rhone’, presenter as it turned out. At the time I was out looking for advertisers to get behind the launch of the Eden Local. Steve had recently opened the Cumbria Mini Centre at Ullswater Road and in discussing the magazine, I noticed that behind him was an empty room. is; especially when you apply for funding, when all you have is an idea, a voluntary group, an empty room and a bank account. The Council has supported the project from the beginning, endorsing the full-time application with many other local businesses, voluntary groups and even now using Eden FM to promote their most recent campaign. Our thanks from the team. Keeping the Station online 24/7 for two years should be attributed to the funding through the Penrith Co-operative Society Sponsorship and support from Cumbrian Local Publications. Again many thanks from the team for this continued support. From the time we switched on until where we are now, the full story is on our website, which again is a shining example of volunteers grafting together. There is a lot more to do and more updates to

follow, meanwhile, I’ll leave you with two other volunteers, who, 2 years ago had never been on the radio. Is Andy Neen, Deputy Chairman and Technical Director living the dream? I’m Andy Neen, and for over 35 years I have been a DJ / Compare and Sound Engineer, working throughout the Eden Valley area. I have run my own mobile disco and PA hire service, serving many people and venues in the Eden Valley and much further afield. Becoming part of Eden FM was a boyhood dream for me, and an excellent opportunity to help support a very exciting community project. Eden FM provides me with the perfect chance to give something back to the community that has supported me and my business for over three decades. I present a weekly show 8-10pm

every Thursday. The show has built up an avid following, and listeners can expect to hear some of the best Northern Soul and Tamla Motown Tracks ever released, with a few personal favourites thrown in for good measure. As well as presenting a weekly show, I am very much looking forward to being involved in the studio build in my role as technical manager, where I will help Eden FM get up to speed with the technical wizardry required to maintain a fully functioning FM station. I will also enjoy passing on the skills I have picked up throughout my career by delivering training to new presenters. All in all this is sure to be a busy time ahead, but there is no doubt that working for a full-time licensed FM radio station will be a very rewarding and worthwhile challenge.

Carrots at Carleton For readers of the December 2010 Eden Local, which of course is free to read on line, it was the start of my quest to find local food, a taste that was real and low mileage. I spent a farming year with Neil Hodgson and his family, out in the fields, in the farm shop, around the dining room table and the odd day in the milk shed. It was for me a fantastic experience and there isn’t a week in the year that I don’t pay a visit to Carleton Farm Shop. The thing is Neil’s got a friend who writes a local magazine and that friend who writes the magazine needs one of Neil’s barns every month to take delivery of up to 4 pallets of magazines for delivery. It’s my favourite seasonal update and a reminder. The dirty carrots are now in full supply and available from the shop. For visitors going to the shop for the first time, please note you will see carrots, swedes, parsnips and potatoes looking like they have been pulled out of the ground and that is because they have. With the exception of course of the potatoes, these were recently extracted and are now available in bags but stored in their own jackets. You can’t pull tatties out the ground in November! Make the most of farm freshness, straight from the ground and if you are thinking Local Cumbrian Bronze Turkey, you can’t go wrong ordering from the Carleton Farm shop. Low mileage, quality local Turkeys a bit different to Norfolk, that’s a long way ﬂy!

New to Burrowgate, Penrith, I met Greg Forbes, the proprietor of his new business Smoked, who gave me a tour of his premises and a taste of his products. Prior to opening the doors to this new and unique business, Greg had been working in the hospitality and catering industry for over 15 years. He studied hotel and catering management at Sheffield Hallam University. Greg is originally from Lancaster, now living in Yanwath, but notably has worked at both The Rampsbeck Country House Hotel and L’enclume. Although much of his experience would be on the operational side of hotels and restaurants, he has always been a keen cook. As an avid fisherman, he would regularly smoke his own catch at the waters edge. This is where Greg’s interest in smoking foods started. And in Greg’s words, ‘to get more of an insight into commercial smoking, I attended a smoking course with Smoky Jo and Georgina, the former owners of Brougham Hall Smokehouse; and the result is Smoked! I have the smokers on view for customers in the rear of my shop and feel that my distinctive competency is that I can brine and smoke requested items for people as well as my regular items.’

Eden Entrepreneurs According to figures published by Eden District Council in July this year, “there is a significantly higher rate of self-employment among residents in Eden (17.3% - 6,685) than in England and Wales (9.7%).” With increasing travel costs, poor public transport, fewer full time roles, childcare costs and, most importantly, a determination to find a way to work and live in a rural area, it’s no wonder that Eden has such high self-employment figures. But, what really motivates Eden entrepreneurs? This month I met up with members of Eden Ladies, a networking group for women in business, to find out what inspired them to start their own business. Dianne Ormerod is a woman who openly admits to be passionate about stationery; well she did work in the industry for 20 years. One day her passion for paperclips and pencils was erased. Not wanting to sit about and hope the next job would come knocking on her door, she went out to find it. Thanks to connections she made whilst working in sales and business development, first with a laundry then a catering supply company, she was introduced to a company, Spice King. At last she had found something that tickled her taste buds. When the opportunity arose to take over the business, she leapt at the opportunity. For her the time was right. She wanted a challenge, and could see real potential for growth. Now the Director of Spice King (Penrith) Ltd, she has worked closely with her chef, Martin Ward, as well as local suppliers from whom they source the key ingredients and heeded suggestions from her clients, enabling her to add new recipes to the range. From hearty ready meals, I went on to meet the owners of a truly delightful shop, Little Treasures in Kirkby Stephen. It is a treasure trove of items for babies and children, from the pretty to the practical. I was able to find the perfect christening gift for my Godson, a personalised pirate picture, a gift of the calibre normally found in chic (overpriced!) boutiques. The mother and daughter team, Barbara Harrison and Sarah Allison, opened their first shop 6 years ago because it had been a long held ambition coupled with a desire to offer something different in town and, for Sarah, it fitted in well with her first born son arriving. After three years, they decided to move to larger premises, to be more visible on the high street and be able to expand the range, and in doing so found an ingenious way to overcome the issue of additional overheads. Pamela Clarke, who had worked with Barbara in the post office, had been mulling over the idea of turning her crafty hobbies into a business – she knits faster than I talk. Now Pamela runs her business, Coloured Thread, selling a range of knitting, patchwork and embroidery supplies in the same shop as Little Treasures. The business name is a true reflection of the vibrancy of the stock, beautifully displayed in rainbow-like rows. For her,

being able to share a space, along with the support of Barbara and Sarah, provided her with the confidence to take that step. (I’m so glad Pamela did, as my Godson may also end up with one of the gorgeous quilts she makes.) Whilst passion for their work drives many people to start their own business, for some it is borne out of necessity or circumstance. Two such people are June Watson, a virtual administrator and all round administration angel and, Debbie Howard, a dynamic diva with a duster and Dettol. For many years June worked in administration within education, planning and organising complex events and records – her spreadsheets should be framed! With a reshuffle in the university, she was made redundant. Now rather than see this as a negative, she chose to take stock of her life, her aspirations and ambition. The outcome was she felt the need to create more flexibility in her life, something that self-employment could offer her. In recent years she has adapted her workstyle to the rural setting in which she lives and maintained a fabulous work/life balance. When Debbie’s daughter moved to secondary school there were no places on the bus to take her daughter, so Debbie had to be taxi, that somewhat limited the kind of work she could do. After spells in various jobs (she is adept at turning her hand to most things), she took the bold decision to start her own business, one that would enable her to set the hours to suit the school run. About 6 months ago, Zebra Housekeeping was launched, and Debbie has steadily built up her client list. For her it was a practical solution to a problem, and one that she is now very pleased to have taken. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about starting a business to take the first step, by seeking advice and guidance from a business adviser, consultant, mentor or bodies such as CREA, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce and the Growth Hub project. Yes, it may well be a daunting prospect. Yes, your business idea may be ridiculed by your mates. Yes, you might fail. But, as my mother told me, “stop dilly dallying. You’ll never achieve anything if you won’t make a start.” Eden Ladies meets on the second Wednesday every month for networking, problem sharing and presentations. It’s time to take a count of those signatures! The first stage of the campaign is almost complete, a date has been set for the group behind - Say ’yes’ to a Penrith Town Council. Next up is to discuss the next stages of the campaign and strategy with Gordon Nicholson Leader of the Eden District Council and the Legal Services Department. The importance of any campaign like this is setting a target and finishing line. Some races are longer than others, you don’t sprint to forming a town council. A long distance runner would set the pace, take into consideration the conditions, the competition and keep something in reserve. A campaign for a town council is a similar race, but this campaign is aiming for second place. As part of the process following on from the findings and work carried out by a Scrutiny group

Pillar lies on the west side of Ennerdale valley in the western part of the Lake District. After parking up at Honister Slate Mine we took the west path up to Drum House, then headed left towards Moses Trod. After about a mile, we took the steep decent down the edge of Haystacks into Ennerdale valley. On our left were the two Gables outlining the head of the valley, to our right was the hut of Black

Sail Youth Hostel, and beyond was Lake Ennerdale. We had been walking approximately one hour before we climbed out of the valley and up between Kirk Fell and Pillar. Our ascent brought us to a small tarn offering a fine view of Wasdale Head and Scafell. Making our way up the back of Pillar, and after some serious walking, reached the imposing Pillar Rock. This is an impressive

feature on the north eastern side of the mountain, widely known as one of the wonders of the Lake District, due to it featuring in William Wordsworth’s poem The Brothers, “In the late afternoon sunlight it stands lofty and venerable.” After a short walk we reached the Summit (2927 ft) offering extensive views in all directions, stretching from the Isle of Man to the Pennines, and looking down on

We headed back the way we came to Kirk Fell, then took the route along it’s side to Great Gable and on to Moses Trod which returned us to Drum House, and back down to the slate mine at Honister. This walk is ten miles long in all, and took us six hours. I would grade it medium to hard.

The Wainwright Society announces its main beneﬁciary for 2014

The Wainwright Society is delighted to announce that the Brathay Exploration Group Trust, based in Ambleside, will be the main beneﬁciary of funds raised by the Society in 2014. The Brathay Exploration Group Trust, formed in 1947, is a charity that takes young people on exploration in the UK and throughout the world. They also provide opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled children in Cumbria to explore the fells and learn about environmental issues that affect this wonderful landscape. The money that is raised by the Society through its annual Charity Challenge, together with sales of its 2015 Calendar, will be used to fund ‘Taster Weekends’ enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to experience what

Alfred Wainwright described when he first beheld the view of the Lakeland mountains as, ‘a moment of magic’. The Society hopes to be able to fund a two-year programme of ‘Taster Weekends’ that will benefit over 200 children who live in Cumbria. When Alfred Wainwright was reminiscing in 1966 after he had completed the Pictorial Guides he wrote in Fellwanderer, ‘Do take the children on the hills early … Children are born scramblers and don’t hurt easily: it’s yourself you want to watch, not them. They will be in a seventh heaven of delight.’ Malcolm Tillyer, the Chairman of Brathay Exploration Group has said, ‘We are based in Ambleside and it’s important that we establish ourselves as

part of the local community. I want our work to particularly help local young people and to allow them to appreciate the wonderful environment that is on their doorstep.’ It is the Society’s hope that through the activities organised by Brathay Exploration Group, more youngsters will be encouraged to climb and walk on Lakeland’s fells and experience the joy and wonder that Wainwright experienced when he was a young man exploring the mountains for the very first time.
